You and your team have really outdone yourself with this one. This should be nominated for a prize and i would vote for you immediately. The pictures alone are absolutely astonishing, even without all this rendered holloywood material. Seeing the bedouin life and people was really touching. And if this all works out it will be the first city that all of only knew from science fiction materialised. Huge if true ;) Thanks for your work!
First title: "Why Saudi Arabia is Building a $1 Trillion City in the Desert" Thumbnail: Basically Johnny's face with dynamic shot with desert background. Let's see how it'll be optimised :D
A reminder that creators now have an A/B testing feature that allows us to upload multiple thumbnails to see which one appeals most to the audience. This system accounts for total watch time, which means it optimizes for the thumbnail that not only gets people to click, but also that best represents the promise of the video and gets people to actually stay and watch. So the thumbnail will certainly change many times as this video that we worked on for six months tries to find its audience.
@@johnnyharrisThanks for the insight Johnny, could this be an interesting video topic sometime? I.e "What can TH-cam thumbnails tell me about our psychology" and use it as a jumping off point for wider behaviour and engagement driven journalism.
@@johnnyharris I remember watching couple videos (starting with Veritasium, I suppose) about that process and I'm in no way bashing it. If you can tell - how long certain title/thumbnail needs to appear before useful data about it's performance can be gathered?
As a Saudi, I love this! Of course the cinematics, the editing, the music, it was truly enjoyable. At first when I saw the upload I thought “Uh oh, another Saudi bashing video”, but I found your views quite balanced and the video gives a general positive vibe especially about the people. Thank you!
You instantly face social problems. There will be class divisions based on who lives how high. Who would wanna live near the bottom with limited access to sunlight. Who would want to live near the sewage plants. Its not like you can just 'avoid living' near such areas since the entire city is just a line
There are hundreds of questions about architecture, engineering, design and urban planning that are not resolved in the renders. One thing i'm taking away from this video is the question that " do we really need another dubai?" it is obvious and clearly visible what saudi arabi is trying to do here. I'm seeing in future, after observing the contrast you've shown in this video, people will come to visit the natural scenery and aurora with the high tech cities. Of course if Saudi Arabia spare them in their habitat. It'll be interesting to see how this bet pays off!
I find comments like these particularly interesting and rooted in western exceptionalism and subconscious bigotry. The very fact that you are online and commenting on a video is testament to the fact that humans incline toward progress and technology. This is the same reason why rural American towns are shrinking as people move to urban areas to seek better opportunities. Why should desert Arabs be any different? What is Dubai? It’s a cosmopolitan city that flexes like any major metropolitan city in the world.
@@AmusementPerks No! Dubai wasn't wasting money, resources, and energy. Dubai was doing what's needed. Dubai went havoc when they started building artificial islands. They aren't able to sell them. Most of them are still empty. Saudi Arabia and neom has the same issue. There are no investors and nobody wants to live there, except he's offered a lot more. Nobody wants to live in a hot desert where they need to waste energy for cooling when you can live in Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, and the US. It's a pipe dream. They will build some smaller version and be done with it. It happened to every other mega project too. There must be a necessity for it to be profitable.
Johnny thank you for the work you do. I’m living vicariously through you and your content to see the world through a different lens. Wishing you the best
When it's so blatantly an advertisement for Neom, and not a true journalistic review of what's going on behind the scenes....of course it's going to be free.
Seeing that interaction amongst the Bedouin family helps remind me that we aren’t really that different despite being in different lifestyles and living conditions. We all care about and appreciate living peaceful and happy lives with our loved ones.
Abu Huraira reported God’s messenger as saying, "By Him in whose hand Muhammad’s soul is, anyone of this people, Jew or Christian, who hears of me and then dies without believing in my message, will be among those who go to hell.”
I met a Christian Bedouin tribe when I was serving in the Iraq War. Even though I was an American soldier they treated me/us with absolute kindness and hospitality. They brought us into their sitting tent and served us chai, and if you know anything about Iraqi chai, you know it’s some of the best tea you’ll ever taste. Just perfection! They insisted we stay for dinner, and as we ate, we shared stories of our lives through our interpreter. One thing I found super interesting is that different tribal clans are ranked socially by who herds the most prestigious animals, with camels being the highest, followed by sheep and goats. Also unlike Muslim Iraqis, Christian Bedouin women hold significant roles in the clan. They also hand craft some of the most amazingly beautiful and intricate tapestries I’ve ever seen. This was right outside the ancient ruins of Babylon, and while I sat there so many thoughts and emotions came over me. I could literally feel the history. The beginnings of civilization, all the battles fought over thousands of years, the people that have lived and traveled there throughout time. I feel like I am now part of that history forever, even if I was there militarily. The Bedouin carry the torch of that history in semblance, and by living the way their people have for millennia. A hard working, family oriented people, that deserve our respect and appreciation for being the integral stewards of Mesopotamia and other lands they inhabit. It’s one of my favorite memories of Iraq, and an experience I will never forget. Even in an ugly war, humanity will always find its way. I hope one day that relations between the west and Iraq are normalized and restored to the point that I can visit the places I loved again, and show my family.
@@AbdoZaInserttranslates to- “A corrupt war.. and unjust… Until now, Iraq is suffering from it.” It’s a shame you can’t just appreciate a nice story without interjecting your negativity.
I must say, I find it quite remarkable, how you were granted access into Neom and it’s construction sites . . not only were you granted access, but you were also aloud to film . . . I’d like to know how you managed this.
You would be surprised what kind of reach you can have if you are willing to suck up to, and bring positive coverage to dictators and oil billionaires. Their vanity projects have been slammed by many so far, so they definitely need some positive coverage.
Man the editing skill the colour grading, the bgm its just mind-blowing nothing less then any documentory u guys really deserve an oscar for this just wow
Really enjoyed the video-great cinematography and an interesting look into Bedouin culture. Just a small note: Muslims pray facing the Kaaba, so from northwest Saudi, the direction would be more south than east. The comment about facing west while they face east during their prayer felt a bit unnecessary and out of place. That said, it’s clear a lot of effort went into this, and overall, it was very well done!
Absolutely loved the sound in this video. Makes the viewing really immersive and it gives a powerful feeling to the amount of dirt and sand being moved.
Johnny this is by far the most authentic video you've ever done! It absolutely underscores the level of hard work and firsthand experience you put yourself through to capture the experience of bedoin life. I've come to cherish and envy the simplistic yet meaningful lives of societies like this and found people of Saudi and Arabs in general to be the most hospitable and generous even when they have so little
It will most likely be finished but definitely not at the level they are envisaging it currently at such grand scale. I think it will be descaled massively in the future like all of their projects, originally the burj Khalifa was meant to be mile high it is just half that. Also the artificial islands were meant to be much more spectacular than what the finished product came to be, impressive regardless.
Wow Johnny, i had to actually pause and comment, this is such a beautifully made doc. I could easily watch it on repeat, the music, editing, the spirit of these people preserved on video. This is such an enjoyable piece of art. Thank you Johnny and team
So animations fooled you? lol ... Neom can't look like in the animations. It would be too wasteful and unprofitable. Also, who came up with the line? The line is the most wasteful geometry. Just imagine the infrastructure. It will take forever to go from one end to the other. You will need so much more resources to build it and the maintenance will be terribly expensive. The square is the optimal geometry. That's why no city in the world is a line but square like. But I don't expect much from people on the internet. Most of you aren't scientists or have a scientific education. So you're fooled by animations like this. This is as stupid of an idea as building islands in front of an empty desert. And just as with the islands, neom will fail (yes, the islands failed, most of them are still empty and wait for an investor).
And did you know what? They needed to use another sand for the islands. They couldn't use the desert sand. That's so wasteful and impractical. Jesus! Just build in the desert and create a bay instead of islands.
@@devalapar7878I have to disagree with the square, the shape that is optimal depends on the environment and some nice blobby structures roughly resembling a circle are probably the most common if you look at reals cities and towns
This is so well done. I found myself watching less and less of Johnny Harris lately for reasons I’m uncertain of. Maybe it shifted too much from the Vox-like style I’d come to love and today… over an hour ago, as this appeared on my Suggestions, I decided the topic was interesting enough (and I had heard enough negatives about ‘The Line’) that I might as well find out… “WHY?” and goodness, did you give me an answer in a 30 minute documentary that felt too short, perfectly paced, beautifully shot, and so grounded in what made Johnny Harris’s videos so good that I referenced you as a model for educational content done right in a Keynote I presented in 2021. Well done team… maybe, just maybe I’ll go back to giving all those other videos a try. Feels good to be back.
Although there's a lot of understandable negativity around the project I do hope it achieves good for humanity, I'm not knowledgeable on the project specifically but I do have experience with the Red Sea Project (another megaproject next-door to Neom) and I saw a genuine care for worker's rights and sustainability, we installed huge solar farms to power the project and we had marine biologists on site to make sure we didn't disturb nature, we also reached 6.5M (collective) work hours without a worker injury. I had my concerns when these projects were announced as to their legitimacy or how likely they were, but with time I really did see genuine progress and care.
I've seen it too, but people have been brainwashed for a long time about this part of the world. They criticize it without even looking at the facts; all they need is a TikTok video.
Beautiful film, Johnny. My compliments. The scenery and starry nights in the desert are breathtaking. I especially enjoyed learning more about the bedouins and the warm welcome you received. And all those new city constructions seem like sci-fi in the process of becoming reality. Fascinating! Thank you for showing us both worlds up close!
One of the most well made documentaries I've seen in a while, the editing and especially the sound engineering is crazy good, thank you for this jhonny.
I'm from Saudi and I have friends engineers who have done studying of the area, the area is known from a long time that it is extremely rich geologically، geographically and biologically, it is inbetween three continents, with possibility to reach it within 8 hours from most places on earth, there are ALOT of oil, minerals and natural resources in the area, the idea is to having a city nearby so they can create industries and plants for all of these resources while making it attractive place for tourists and entrepreneurs, it is an idea for a revolution in the area. Of course that is the idea, all the projects are low risk except the line, so the success chances and fulfilling of the potential of the area depends a lot on it, but the area will remain with unbelievable high potential whether the line is successful or not.
Johnny, I’ve noticed the incorporation of the Dark Fantasy music. And I’m all here for it! Is there anyway to get the song as a stand alone? BTW I am loving the increase in quality production, the evolution of the content itself and so many more aspects that I can’t put into writing. Keep up the good work you and the team are doing such an amazing job
This video made me sob. It just is so amazing how you are able to communicate a renewed appreciation for all the ways humans live their lives in a rapidly changing world. It’s just jaw-dropping the stories and images and experiences all in this video to bring your audience like me into your experience and your goal. Great work Johnny!

I actually love this video, most videos are either pure government propaganda or pure hate. It's good to see an honest take with all the concerns and impressions included. Great job.
"hate" = truth, that's why you call it that, because you don't like it. NONE of everything they show in their cartoons will EVER look even 5% like that. For that matter, it would be a miracle if they finish 5% of it all, 5% that is that will also function like it should.
It has some MAJOR flaws. You could create an environment which houses similar amount of people in a circular ciry just 5 square km big, but i guess "The Circle" doesn't sound as appealing as "The Line"
I think this is your most incredible video in terms of incredible engineering and human endeavor. I know this wasn't the core purpose of your video - but I do believe projects like this inspire the next generation of children and get students interested in stem subjects. It will be fascinating to see how this turns out!
I don’t understand why they are constantly building “LUXURY” resorts, cities. Homes. Who’s going to live there. Why not spend all this money on the people who actually live there instead? It just doesn’t make any sense
I'm pretty sure they're trying to attract outsiders, and outsider money, rather than doing this project for their own people. They're hoping outsider money will be able to keep their economy afloat, once the oil money dries up.
This video was both breathtaking and sad at the same time. However, the quality, editing and narration of this video was nothing less than world class and should be nominated for an Oscar in itself…Bravo! Johnny and Team, hands off fellas!
For me personally, this is the best Johnny Harris video. Not because of the edits, not because of the main subject matter… …but because he humbly immersed himself into the culture among the people of the land.

I've never connected more with a culture I have never been able to contact myself. The Bedouin lifestyle is exactly what my soul craves. Staying away from the stress and anxiety brought on by major cities has brought me peace, but has also pushed me to dive further into nomadic living. Thank you for diving so deep into their culture!

One of the best videos I’ve seen recently. Great footage, great music, great editing, just an inspirational video. Thank you Johnny for bringing this to us!!
Better than Netflix documentary ❤❤❤
that’s a low bar haha, it’s much better than that
Netflix documentaries are shite.
Not really. You did not see a lot of documentaries, do you? At least they have a proper name in the title.
Who do you have doing your sound design? They're killing it!
Bought the dune sound FX. Way to much for this simple docu
What about reading the credits?
This was one of your best videos, Johnny! Great move bringing Hiller-Smith in for enhancing the edit :)
WOW! The storytelling, the editing, the beauty caught on camera combined with the visuals and graphics. Felt like I was watching a documentary on the TV. Incredible.
What about the 46 people imprisoned and those 5 on death row? THATS the story...
Now this is the jonny harris video i miss. Amazingly written, filmed and edited with an incredible insight into this dystopian world. I hope this is the style of videos that are coming, even if they take much longer to make
Not much of an insight into the dystopia of the people getting imprisoned and put on death row. Or murdered and accused of terrorism.
@timbyerly4286 well that's a part of it.
@@timbyerly4286 This was more like an ad for Neom. He did mention briefly that some people were evicted forcefully though.
Ps. those pictures would make for some really nice posters or wallpapers.

First title: "Why Saudi Arabia is Building a $1 Trillion City in the Desert"
Thumbnail: Basically Johnny's face with dynamic shot with desert background.
THE TITLES ARE EVOLVING

I found the Saudi safari more interesting than Neom, the people and the landscape are amazing.

I imagine they are still looking for investors and landing the final solution is not going to be that impressive, if it is possible to build something viable following what is shown so far.

When Dubai was being built people asked “do we really need another Singapore”
@MultiCool10 all the cliches are true. Change is the only constant and copies are everywhere!
Saudi has something Dubai doesn’t, a young highly educated population and entrepreneurs

Yeah living to rush our careers is paradoxical
Abu Huraira reported God’s messenger as saying, "By Him in whose hand Muhammad’s soul is, anyone of this people, Jew or Christian, who hears of me and then dies without believing in my message, will be among those who go to hell.”
Dude this was a masterpiece documentary! Great work man!
This is one of those stories that could convince a young guy enlist - amazing experience, dont give the recruiters even more ammo though lol

One your best works yet. Thank you for putting all this time, effort, and money into showing us this topic !
True I had to pause the video and think.. East?
Absolutely loved the sound in this video. Makes the viewing really immersive and it gives a powerful feeling to the amount of dirt and sand being moved.
Johnny this is by far the most authentic video you've ever done! It absolutely underscores the level of hard work and firsthand experience you put yourself through to capture the experience of bedoin life. I've come to cherish and envy the simplistic yet meaningful lives of societies like this and found people of Saudi and Arabs in general to be the most hospitable and generous even when they have so little
I'll eat my hat if this project ever gets finished.
Make sure to record it.
And add some salt
It will most likely be finished but definitely not at the level they are envisaging it currently at such grand scale.
I think it will be descaled massively in the future like all of their projects, originally the burj Khalifa was meant to be mile high it is just half that. Also the artificial islands were meant to be much more spectacular than what the finished product came to be, impressive regardless.
Brother, that hat will never be eaten in that case.
Even if they do somehow end up building it, it'll 100% be empty and half assed.
In the original scale, they'll never build it. But in some scale, they'll.
This is what a true journalist looks like, i love each and every single video in this channel

@@devalapar7878my biggest fear is fire hazard, it's really hard for emergency services.
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but ebook titled The Elite Society's Money Manifestation might be the answer you’re looking for
