I'm an Australian, and only just heard of her tonight (I'm 53). Her voice is like all the good bit of Tina Turner mixed with all the good bits of Dolly Parton. I hope her fans will consider this a compliment, because that's how I mean it. Wow. Such a shame she is not as famous as Joplin, but the world also never quite caught Wendy O Williams, and should have.

I saw Ruby Starr(Constance Henrietta Mierzwiak) perform at the Jacksonville Gator Bowl in 1976. She was performing with Black Oak Arkansas band as one of the opening bands along with Patti LaBelle for The Who during their "Summer Jam" tour while I was in the USN. Great concert, I enjoyed all of them, especially when The Who put on their laser light show at night during their show. Nice finishing touch.

Yeah, this girl had a serious set of pipes. I like your analogy of the Tina Turner/Dolly Parton sound of her. I'd not thought of that before, but it describes her well here! Certainly Dolly and Tina are heavy hitters, and one could do worse than to be mentioned along with their names, that's for sure. Cheers!

She packed a punch..she should've been as popular as Janis Joplin..I met "Ruby" in the early 80's...very nice lady..even playing in bars she sang, screamed and strutted like there was a crowd of thousands. So sad she passed.

Ruby was best-known as a backup singer for Black Oak Arkansas, but also issued several recordings as a solo artist as well. Born Constance Henrietta Mierzwiak in Toledo, in 1949, she signed to Curtis Mayfield’s Curtom label, recording “Ruby Jones,” her 1971 album supervised by Mayfield himself. Shortly after the album's release, Black Oak Arkansas’s frontman Jim Dandy spotted Starr singing in a club and persuaded her to join his band. She changed her name (once again), this time to “Ruby Starr.” She toured with the band for several years (appearing on the albums Street Party and Balls of Fire, as well as their lone hit single "Jim Dandy") before leaving the group to form the Ruby Jones Band in 1976. Diagnosed with lung cancer and a brain tumor, Starr died at age 45 with her family in Toledo. ```` 'Diagnosed with Lung Cancer AND a Brain Tumor ?!? Damn .. Talk about a 'Double Whammy' !! (rip) ..

No dancers. No moving stages. No video screens. No smoke. And I'd take this show over any 10 Beyonce/Bullcrap/Bieber/ type acts. I can't put those others down, they do what they do and earn millions, and no one just gave it to them. But, they are entertainers. These people were musicians.

When she/they started to stretch out I wondered why other groups (other than Stevie N and Fleetwood Mac) weren't playing the "sexy card". Linda Ronstadt was sexy but she didn't need to lead with it.....she had a once or twice in a lifetime great rock voice. I enjoyed the immensely. That night was my 4th Mountain show and BAO was a real value-add.

I saw BOA sometime in the early 70s, probably at a minor venue in Fort Worth, among several more famous (and laid back) bands. Jim Dandy was strutting his "Jim Dandy to the Rescue" song, blasting out " Go Jim Dandy!" wearing tight white britches and no shirt. I think that was the only song I recall them playing, and I thought they were some sort of specialty act rather than a true rock band, Turns out either I was wrong, or they matured as musicians, or maybe both. Anyway, I heard some nice licks in this track, from drums, lead, and one fine bass riff. I'll have to look around to see what I missed all those years ago.

She's bringing it like a white Tina Turner with Janis Joplin pipes! One things for sure, a woman with that much beauty and charisma has definitely caused some fights in her day! 😂
On a side note.. that confederate LP is badass!

So My Ruby stories is a little bit different.
Back in the Spring of '72, My Michigan Garage Band "Aunt Melissa's Strawberry Jam" got a chance to play a gig in a concert hall in the old Piano Factory in Toledo Ohio, Home of Ruby Jones. The Band was great and most gracious as 2 members of the band went joy riding and got back late, but Ruby's band let us play after they played plus we got to use their new Ampeg Amps.
Their set was premiering their new album which was great stuff, but by July, Ruby was fluttering off with Jim Dandy.

It’s crazy how many bands have copied what these guys did now that I really think about it. Van Halen, Kiss, Monster Magnet, Marshall Tucker Band, Skynard to name a few.
