Replace DAMAGED Caps on Caterpillar 815 Soil Compactor Wheels | Welding & Arc Gouging

- This video is a job we did to replace the worn out and damaged caps on a set of four compactor wheels for a Caterpillar 815F Soil Compactor. Over time the caps get damaged from compacting dirt, gravel and rocks which causes abrasion and wears down the caps. First we carbon air arc gouge off the welds to remove the worn out caps using our Lincoln Electric DC-400 welder and carbon rods. We then wire wheel and grind off the dirt and welds to prepare the pedestals for the new caps. Then we fit and tack the new caps on to the pedestals using Fluxofil M10 metal cored wire. Once all the caps are tacked in place we weld them on using Hobart XL525 dual shield wire to finish.

Those wheels must cost an absolute fortune, to be worth that much labor repairing them. Holy cow. That is just astonishing.
This dude just rocks every job all by himself.....Total Respect. Obviously he is well equipped but his knowledge and broad skills are top notch. I always love to watch a man who is good at what he does and is straightforward and humble about himself....and just wants to better others by sharing knowledge. Best guys ever! You'll know if you're in a room with one cuz they are always listening and not shooting their mouths off about what they know....the knowledgable ones got that way by always learning from others.

The money would be exciting ;-). I like and much prefer the lathe work. But I must say anything & everything this guy does is amazing, he is a Master. The camera lady & safety inspector are just the best too! :-) :-)
Long miserable work (I've done it) but puts a lot of labor hours on the ticket...
Kurtis is a work ethics hero, working late into the night. His customers have all this evidence of quality of construction to back it up
After working in a shipyard for almost 40 years I can actually smell the carbon arcing and grinding in this video. Can't tell you how many days I went home smelling exactly like you do at the end of the day. Interestingly air arc gouging was invented and the company ArcAir founded in the shipyard I worked in and the town I live in.

A lot of channels that I watch of men working, like Demolition Dave, don't explain really what's going on. I wish Dave would explain those explosive elements he put in those rocks.

One man shop busting out the Premium Quality Work in a day that would take a Union shop a week to do halfassed. Bloody Legend! I worked on logging and road building equipment for a Union shop for 11 years until I figured out the Non Union shops did better work FASTER and with better quality! Better money, LESS Grabass and disorganization. There are good Unions out there. I won't name any particular one. The GOOD Unions offer ongoing training, best practices and safety training. The bad ones are run by crooks just hoovering up your dues and telling you to stop working to leverage your employer. For me it's do the job right, SAFELY, the first time and take care of your customer. Curtis is one of those guys. Skookum!

The problem is that there comes a point where unions crumble, because of people lobbying against them and then you get shitty work for a lot of money from corporations and the workers get very little benefit. There needs to be a balance as in a lot of other things, there is no not one right way to do business.
Love the outtakes - funny stuff- self deprecating humor is a lost art. and love Homeless- he's the king.

I’m watching all of ya videos from the oldest to newest.
I'm now retired, but did an apprenticeship as a pipefitter in the 1970s. Part of it was gas and manual arc welding of steel pipework, mainly heating pipes. I was average at it I suppose. It's a pleasure to watch someone highly skilled across many disciplines, making the job look easy. And anyone who keeps a dog as happy as that can't be bad.

I love how clean you keep your shop, given the amount of grinding and machining you do there. Just like a chef - working clean is the sign of a true professional.
Last thing you want hanging around is fine metallic powder that shit can go from 0 to 100 real quick.
Can confirm, we spend the last two hrs of every Saturday cleaning shop. We clean as we go but it gets in places you'd never even think of!!

@@kristianskov4841 I have only used gouging rods one time. About 20 years ago I got my Miller 330abp 460 amp tig welder and decided to try the gouging gun and rods that came with it. That is loud, hot, nasty work and at the time I didn't have a big enough air compressor to keep up. Later I got a small plasma cutter and use that for gouging the small items I work on. Eventually, I will get a hand torch for the Hypertherm Powermax 65 that is on the CNC plasma table that I built. I wonder if plasma works as well as the gouging rods. The hypertherm has a setting just for gouging.

There are so many positive comments about this channel and Kurtis' work that it almost seems pointless to post one more. However ... Kurtis is a truly amazing guy. I am constantly impressed with the quality of work, the care taken with small things like mounting jobs on the mill, tool changes on the lathe, fabulous welding, attention to detail, and mostly, the totally awesome videos of it all by his wife. I also love the details about weld wire, tool tips, gasses, etc. Fascinating stuff for anyone who's ever done any of this sort of work. This is by far the best channel on TH-cam.
Rewatching this old vid, you can see that Kurtis’ delivery and ease in front of the camera has improved a lot. It wasn’t bad then, but it’s damn near perfect now for these types of vids.
This has rapidly become my favorite TH-cam channel, and I'm always eagerly awaiting Fridays for the uploads🤣

That has to be one of the real benefits of TH-cam apart from dog and cat videos. Its like being tutored one on one as an apprentice and being able to replay the video to reinforce the lessons. There are so many different kinds of skills being taught that it is amazing what you can learn.

here in summer 2023 and Curtis is still the only guy I can find who wears a proper respirator, including eye coverage, when gouging and welding with this type of wire. I found one other guy who wears a filtered mask with no protection to the eyes from the gases. I don't get it. these guys have had two years to learn from the best.

I've honestly never seen arc welding done to remove pieces...that was super interesting!
Arc gouging approaches 120db ambient noise and he is very fortunate to be doing it outside. Get shoved up in a hole somewhere arc gouging and it's a miserable time.
@@jonathonbridges9625 i once had to do air arc inside a small steel tank in summer , it hit 60 - 63 Celcius in there , i did 2 - 3 minutes inside then out for 5 - 10 minutes to cool down , i did it 4 times to finish the job but i knew if i had to go in again it might have killed me.
That Lincoln Electric machine cranked all the way to the max. Love those machines. Last forever

Wow, I've never seen or heard of air arc gouging before - what an impressive process that is.
If you use oxygen instead of air it becomes a thermal lance and can cut thru plate steel like butter.

I like that you (mostly) wear breathing protection when welding and grinding. Something that a lot of other channels doesn't practice or talk about.
I had a relative that welded quite a bit of his life using minimum protection he later died from cancer
So interesting. I really do like watching videos that explain why and what's happening to us laymen. You show a real person's job. The video editing is well put together (IMO). The out takes are the best. The doggo breaks are the best. He's such a happy dog. 👍🍻😀🖖🏻

got to love the safety inspector being on the job to oversee a good game of fetch. :)
Man iv done hundreds and hundreds of 815, 826, 836 and even some bomags. I can't imagine having to roll a wheel around in the floor to weld it. Our shop took a axle out of 836 Compactors, welded them up on a stand, hooked a electric motor to the pinion with a chain(so you can get a gear reduction with sprockets) and had a speed controller for you to set in your lap while you weld along with a scaffold in the front to stand and do your cleats up top since we primarily used metal cored wire. Also cut out multiple hub adapters so whatever wheel it be,, we can just bolt that adapter on and bolt the wheel up.. Props to you for sure man!🤣

When we did ice lugs three per grouser bar on dozer tracks, two guys one on each side front and back took 12 hours to do a D11 from getting it up on stands to getting it out the door. You are a very determined welder 👍🏻
