This Job DIDN’T Go As Planned! | CAT 777 Suspension Strut Repair

- There’s more to this repair than we first thought and it didn’t go as planned. This is a front suspension strut off a Caterpillar 777 Mining Haul Truck, the wear band seal groove has worn out and started to “ramp” so we need to reclaim it. We show the process of getting this big suspension strut setup in our lathe for machining but unfortunately once we get a dial indicator on it we realise the repair is more than what we and our customer first thought! We wanted to show that not all jobs go to plan or work out and this is one of them.

There is nothing I hate more than investing time and brain into a setup, only to find out that there was a fatal flaw in my assumptions. In your case, I am curious whether there is enough volume and profit to merit fabrication of a quick-and-dirty go/no-go rig to determine concentricity beforehand. Very nice Sherlocking!

Great video. I love that you see a problem and report it to the client instead of just throwing something together and half Assing it. A lot of companies here in America wouldn’t do that. They would just throw together because they want the money. That’s what sets you apart from a lot of different machinists. Your honesty and good work will take you very far. Excellent job.
This machinist would have measured it and put it on the horizontal mill. It is not a lathe job unless you put it on a mandrel.
Lots of companies are "one hit wonders" they work hard to get work but loose on repeat orders.

Yup, definitely time to get a horizontal borer. You don't need them often, but when you do, they are pretty damned handy.
Man... I just screw around in my garage with an old South Bend lathe and I still learned a bunch on this video. Combine that with your love of animals... this is one of the best channels I'm watching on TH-cam right now. You two are great. Keep it up!

We don't often get to see the jobs that don't work out, so this was interesting to see the same process pursued with a less than perfect outcome. Those jobs come along now and then, and must be sussed out little different than those that are successfully completed. Thanks for sharing this along with all those representing success.
What i find amazing with this channel is, i'm not even into machining, but the editing and the explanation is so good that my curiosity keeps me here for great entertainment.

I don't know if it can be called engineering. He's not an engineer and not doing what an engineer does. I'd call him a machinist. Or a mechanical workshop expert technician. Maybe technician is the right word.
@nikolaospizanias1836 Well, I am a master electrician and although I don't have the degree as an electrical engineer, I still hold the same license as an engineer, so whether Curtis is an engineer, machinist, or a mechanic, I'm sure he can outdo any engineer because of his years of experience in the trade. To me, it's engineering at its finest!
@@Unexpectedperspectivesnow I'm pretty sure I watched him ENGINEER a nice counterweight, As well as ENGINEER a steady rest guide. Also I'm 95% sure you could not engineer your way out of a wet paper bag. It's actually a fairly broad term. a person who designs, builds, or maintains engines, machines, or public works is the definition, design and build (a machine or structure) is the verbal definition. And technically by fabricating those parts and incorporating them into that big lathe means he designed a machine specifically for the purpose of working on that specific strut. If that isn't ENGINEERING than I'll kiss your ass.

Just watching the setup, the forces involved in that big old lump spinning must be huge, that you can then sensibly machine it to any kind of tolerance is very impressive to watch. Can’t wait to see what happens!

I was looking this video trying to understand how Kurtis was setting this piece on the lathe, when the video ended without nothing done. 30 mins passed like nothing, that’s incredible! I was expecting the actual job being done without realizing the piece was messed up really bad.
But this is part of the job: sometimes things didn’t go like always.

The funniest part was Curtis tickling the tail and feet of that lizard; if that lizard visited twice or thrice again, we shouldn't be shocked if we saw it sitting on the shoulder of Curtis and he'll name it George 2.
“I’ll talk to my customer and see what they want to do” then proceeds to walk outside to a lizard with its ass hanging out of the underside of an excavator. 😂😂😂

Kurtis, you are so smart using your overhead crane on even the heavy stuff you are fully capable of lifting. You know this, you are saving your joints/body, and it's much safer.

You never disappoint, but I found this video to be one of your best. I LOVED the diagnostics on this one and I also liked you two showing that sometimes it's just not working out. I bet it's more than just a bit frustrating to put all this work into figuring out what the hell is wrong with the piece; measuring, making clamps, sleeves, measuring again - just to have to send it back without having really done anything to it in the end. I've been a computer geek since 1979 and this is probably the most addictive thing I've seen yet.
I have some experience in this type of work, but I am at level 10 out of 100 compared to Curtis.
Everyone likes to follow the masters, and to see the quality in what they do and their attention to details.
Your experience and knowledge from previous work shines through in everything.
TH-cam will make you wealthy, and you both deserve every cent you get.
Good, kind, rational, humerous, honest, charming, hardworking people deserve everything good that comes their way.

1. I love all that the technical stuff, but I really want to learn more about you two as a couple/people. Karen deserves even more priase. Does she do *everything* from shooting to publishing? VERY impressive work!
2. 95%(?) of the followers don't know much about your work or the lingo. What about a "lingo course"? Maybe in the descriptions, as text..??
Or, maybe a separate "lingo video"..? Students around the world are following you. You have a huge influence on them.
(OD, ID, "mil", line boring, prep, honing, grinding, ++++ (a real 101 on mechanical work shop lingo....)

I guess I'm curious if you charged them for all the preliminary work?
@@dziggy3004 There would be an hourly charge unless CEE is really generous (Kurtis spent a good two hours checking that part that is a good chunk of the day). I was a panel beater and if I laser lined a car, to check it was straight/square before work was started, it would be charged for even if the customer then decided not to go ahead with the work.
The title almost made me think Curtis had done something wrong. That'll be the day eh 😂
The one thing I was always taught.
If the job setup is a pain in the ass make sure you check that job can even be done. And yet being taught it’s a 50/50 if I do it.
this is just another reason why your work is so respected you wont do a half assed repair most other places probably would have just done the repair it came in for without checking all around ! nice catch.
I was afraid something bad happend from the title, i was expecting the cylinder to fall off the lathe or something. pretty relieved it just wasn't cost effective to repair. A lesser shop would have done a half ass job and collected the repair bill! Top quality service as usual

Those companies are lucky to have you working on their equipment! If you worked on anything of mine, I wouldn’t question it a bit! You are honest and meticulous in everything you do and the filming/editing perfect as always.

You guys are getting really good at building a narrative. Leaving us on edge waiting to see if the customer will go ahead with a more expensive repair or not.
Really disappointing to see the customer not go ahead after all the set up and diagnosis, but that’s the way she blows. At least you’ve got a huge clamp now 😂, and you’ll of charged accordingly for the time spent.
Always amazed to see you setup repairs, I did get worried when I didn’t see you do a support band, but pow, no problem, cut one on the angle.
That lizard made me laugh, not sure how you spotted the critter, but hopefully he’ll think twice before climbing inside a excavator.

I had seen the tail chuck issue but trusted you had a plan!
I don't know what's more terrifying, that giant out of balance cylinder turning with such a small clearance to the bed or Kurtis fisting the spindle bore.

Hi my name is John Blake. I am a American and have been doing your line of work for more than 45 years. Your quality of work is absolutely great! You are a very good welder, but if I can make one suggestion if you would build yourself a holder for your mig gun that is very adjustable sitting on three legs so that you can get it in around whatever is on the floor, make the holder adjustable up down, movable in all directions, it takes out all human movement and every weld looks like a machine weld. Welding on cylinder heads, buildup etc. you will wonder why you did not do this earlier plus it makes your job that much easier.
First thought when watching him weld the extension/brace in place was" how is he going to release the chuck, with that pipe blocking the holes?"
And then I was just waiting for when he would discover that problem!

I was wondering the same thing. In my shop we charged a flat rate hour time whether the customer gave the go ahead or not. Time is time....
Kurtis would definitely charge for all this time used in the shop. Probably took him half a day.
Time is money, especially when you’re dealing with us set up like that that could take 3 to 4 hours getting it set up

Rance here Kurtis. This certainly was a good lesson for us non-machinist to witness! Now the thing that comes to mind is…..since you spent hours in preparing this item for an extensive repair, would it have been economically wise to have purchased the worn out part, proceed to refurbish it and put it in your inventory to use later. It just seems a natural act to have finished the service should you could have purchased it at a good price.
Great video, nice to see how you thought it all thru from the customer's perspective. When someone does something like that for me, I would bring him everything i have that needed work. The quality of your work just leads to integrity, I am sure your customers recognize this.

Guys I absolutely love to watch your videos! I did my time with CAT and remember these struts coming through with cracks and carnage abound. Your videos are informative yet humorous and show the just how much experience and expertise it takes to get the job done. The only thing I hope for is that Kurtis can share his skills and train the future generation because he is an absolute wealth of knowledge. Kurtis, I haven't caught your partners name, but she is an absolute gem and has some serious skills behind the camera. It looks like you guys have a great time working together.
