Making NEW Pins for a CAT 657 Scraper Tractor | Machining & Welding

  • We’re making new pins to go in an earthmoving machine! These are linkage pins for the queen post on a Caterpillar 657 Scraper Tractor. We show the step-by-step process of making the new pins. First, we start with all the lathe work and machining the induction hardened chrome rod. One of the pins also needs deep hole drilling and tapping for the grease holes before using the milling machine to drill through holes for the grease channel. Then we weld on the plates before installing the spacer rings. We finish up the job by stamping in the part numbers and painting the plates.
In this video we are using:
    - Hafco TM-26120G Centre Lathe
    - Hafco BM-63VE Milling machine
    - WIA 500i Weldmatic welder

Yes, Curtis is good, but he's not a "rarity" like you make him out to be. There are thousands of machinist in Australia who can do everything you see Curtis doing just as well. You just don't see them. And this job he just showed you is not difficult at all. He makes it look "easy" because it pretty much is. At least on the scale of complexity. What sets Curtis apart is his drive and work ethics. He is fearless attempting large projects that many would balk at. Like tearing into his carry deck crane project. Many, including me, would have never attempted that. He doesn't take shortcuts or cheat. He does things right.

Interesting post, using brass with the pin definitely denotes the weak link. The forces on that pin must quite phenomenal. Good to see Homey getting into the Christmas spirit. I guess you guys don't put your presents under the tree anymore, if you have a tree. Our cats used to hide in the tree, and the dogs, do what dogs do under the tree. Sadly yesterday afternoon we had to take one of the dogs for the eternal sleep, due to stomach cancer. We rescued him, Snoop, from a Croatian kennel where fighting dogs were trained and they used young dogs as bait. Snoop was 8 weeks old when we got him and even at that age he was scarred from bites, blind in his left eye with stitches on eyelid. He was a talker, mostly moaning, a typical Victor Meldrew. Great post, and great cinematography, Karen. Great engineering content Kurtis, be safe and well 👍

If you have someone who can cut the pieces you need for whatever size you need, as long as you trust them and you know they're going to supply what you need and when youneed it why not. As an addition to saving you time and therefore money, its supports the local engineering supply chain and like you say you don't have to worry about the waste. 👍

Wow you sure are an artist with that welder could watch you weld all day long at normal speed . Getting your steel cut for you is just good business sense. Unless your big enough where you have a full-time person cutting parts for you . The Mrs is very talented when it comes to the shooting and editing much appreciation for the both of you for putting out such quality workmanship in your respective fields .

I realize you always address the "Young Guys" in your intro but know us "Old Guys" love your content as well. Retired from the World's largest Aerospace Company a couple of years ago and your videos help me in that "retirement process"; you won't really understand until it happens to you (if your lucky). So nice and relaxing to get a couple of cups of Joe and watch you work so many thanks. Happy Holidays to your and yours from the Riviera.

Having watched a few hobbyists try to get through induction hardened stuff with ceramic inserts on their machines, it's always incredible to see you doing such massive cuts while bringing stuff down to dimension. I guess when time is money it really makes sense to get those super beefy inserts and run them hard for those bigboi chips!

Hey guys! Thanks for another cool video;) this time I think I can help you guys with something. Sometime ago I was working for a company that was making parts and toolings for electric machines, like wind and water turbines. One time we got a big job from GE, and we had a fuck ton of parts to mark. We found a solution and we bought a handheld battery-powered pin stamper. I don't remember the price exactly but I see it starts from around 5K Euro, bit pricey but I saves you the hustle ;) cheers guys, "see you" next Friday;)
Edit: oh, i almost forgot - it's called FlyMarker ;)

I remember using something called "portable dot peen marker machine" to mark welded sub-assemblies for very large constructions projects a few years back, it basically has a carbide tip that is punching dozens of dots in line to draw characters you need. It required a plug (220V here in Europe) and an air compressor connection and you are good to go, the characters where clearly visible after hot galvanizing the whole assemblies. I'm guessing those machines aren't exactly cheap, but if you need something that can do a lot of marking of different components on the fly then it might be worth looking in to. The one we ran was made by Pannier i think, and the best thing was that you could save dozens of templates for quick selection if you have recurring codes.

Great video! I especially enjoyed seeing the OEM part pricing. I know the materials and the labor are not inexpensive but saving even 25% over OEM plus the quick turn around is a huge benefit to your customers. I hope they realize the great value CEE provides.
