12 Hour Day in Our Workshop! | Machining, Welding & Line boring

- Experience what a typical 12 hour day in our machining workshop at Cutting Edge Engineering is like! It’s Monday which is one of our busiest days of our week. We’ve got two Caterpillar 777 dump truck suspension strut caps to repair and a front end off a Caterpillar 16H Motor Grader for line boring. For the strut caps we need to do machining & welding to reclaim the bearing surface. For the 16H Front End we have one bushing position that we need to bore out, weld up and bore to spec using our new Sir Meccanica WS1 Plus portable line boring machine. We’ll show you exactly what a day in our workshop from 6am to 6pm is like as we get these jobs completed. See all the interruptions, deliveries, trip to the tool shop and everything in between!

One of the things I most admire about you Kurtis, is you just get stuff done. You're one of the hardest workers I've seen. That kind of work ethic is all too rare in any times.
Also, Kurtis and Karen are running a business. That means that what he and Karen do is what keeps bills paid, what keeps customers happy, along with building and keeping a happy customer base with repeat business! Business owners are a different breed from everyday working folks. They know what it takes to build a successful business, AND keep it successful...VERY HARD WORK AND DEDICATION! I see that in every video from CEE Australia!

Usually when I'm watching you guys I'm sitting down with my dinner, and I find your "no nonsense get the job done without all the drama" so relaxing and interesting. And never ever let anyone persuade you that the out takes are not required, they make you all the more normal and its really refreshing on this medium. Great work you guys.

I own a small hinge factory in Mexico, just like you my day starts at 6 am and ends at 6 pm, I'm already 75 years old.
Greetings.
I am exhausted just watching this. It looks like you have reached the point where a helper will be worth it. If nothing else, it will free you up from setup, cleanup, part prep, and lesser skilled roles. You would do the skilled work and finishing. You have so many machines now that extra staff will help you put more work through and yield more from what you have.
Why do I get the feeling that even if you were 20 people, you'd still have too many jobs to handle?
One video a week is definitely enough. It makes Fridays special!

Just a joy to watch a tradesman doing his work so effortlessly. The knowledge of the machinery and properties of steel and welding are admirable.
I subscribed for three reasons....1. Homey, 2. You remind me of my hard working children who also have a bully breed shop dog, and 3. You're Aussies. I know you get exasperated with us yanks, but you're the closest thing to a twin as we can get. We love you guys...and your dadgum dog, too!
Given that you see each other almost 24/7, kudos to Karen for putting up with Kurtis for so long.
Spouses working together are great when it works.
I love than tiny almost-to-be-biting remark at 3:15 about being actual workshop. No influencer bullshit, no click-baits, just honest work.
The intro with the coffee machines and two mugs, brings back nice memories for me.
I have a shop here in Ontario Canada, my wife and I ran for almost over 25 years. We started at 9:00 AM however, (not 6:00 lol)
We fixed locks and cut keys (technically
still machining :) ) .. we'd make coffee and toast and sit on the front porch 9:00 am waiting for customers :)
She passed away a few years ago (only 40 years old) and now I am in the process of selling the shop and our shop and home (all one building) ..
So Much JUNK collected here after all these decades!! Literally sent one point two, Metric Tonnes to the dump last week) ... :( I still have two (out of 5) kids at home .. we will move to an apartment, and I'll be semi retired, just doing some gravy jobs, for cash a few calls a week :)
But I do so miss, the early morning coffee on the porch with my wife :) ... thank you everyone who read this far ... it's more for me to get feeling out, than inform you all! :)
You do the work of at least 5 typical highly skilled professionals...unbelievable amount of work you get accomplished...experience that came from excellence from the very get go ... I could watch you accomplish all day long...amazing, there might still be hope for humanity...cheers

@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Also - don't worry about 'only doing 1 video a week' - it is literally part of my Friday Ritual - I come home from the Gym, I've got my Friday Night Takeaways - and I get 30 mins to an hour of Zen Machining and master craftsmanship.
The quality of the videos that you put out, more than makes up for the fact that we get one a week - so don't stress, I wouldn't change it.

Kurtis, I'm a retired electrical engineer and I have to say how impressed I am with your engineering skill-sets. Your discipline is rigorous. Your problem solving is ace. Your humor is the icing on the cake. All this in a one man show - amazing. Here's hoping you get to do what you want to do for as long as you want to do it. You and yours deserve it. Oh yeah, and you get to live in one of the nicest locations on this great earth. I retired to the Rocky Mountains. ;-)

Yes, the Rockies are great. 1860M elevation means no flooding, cool nights in the summer (it was down to 2C this morning), icy cold mountain spring water all year. By the way, I traveled through the Gold Coast about 30 years ago when I did a coast to coast trip down under. Guess you were just a smart kid then. 😉

This is really some of the best edited content I've seen on youtube. The camera work and production quality are exemplary. I will never need any of these skills but I have somehow picked up enough to talk intelligently with a machinist. What a time to be alive.

That 'I told you so' phone call was awesome.
It seems the common theme of these videos is that someone tried to cheap out a repair, botched it up, and later had to finally seek the help of someone who actually knew what they were doing. Great work as usual, always awesome to see another fabricator that takes pride and care in their work.

Agreed, I owned and ran a small engine repair shop for years, it never stopped amazing me how many people royally screwed things up rather then having a pro fix it.. They used to call me magic mechanic. Over the decades I only had a few I could not fix or rebuild without just replacing the engine..

I agree with you about being the only employee. The stress of training someone plus the worry about his repair quality makes it not worth it.

i shold gladley see more of thes type of videos. This one were realy entertaining.
There might be another slant to this. Right now Kurtis is in his prime. He and Karen have taken on a lot of capital equipment and facility. If something were to happen to Kurtis's physical ability.... well all production comes to a stop. With employees, there is the possibility that things can continue and Kurtis could take it a bit easier, but still ensure quality. Might be another way to look at the future... moving heavy loads, and all the welding positions do take a toll on the body with time.
I can only speak for myself but most people watching your videos probably don't care if you repeat things. Instead I think people are fascinated by your technique and the heaviness of the type of equipment you use and repair which is very unusual for most people.
I couldn't care less about welding, I don't care about learning how to weld but I am a little fascinated on how you do the repairs and the heavy equipment.
Keep up the "spirit" of your videos and IMO don't worry about repeating. Nothing is absolutely the exact same. Have a great day! 👍😎 - Florida USA.

Even worked with technical mechanics of RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) in MRTT proyect, just in A330 tankers, here in Madrid. I Will watch all your videos. I absolutely enjoy what you guys are doing. I'm a at home hobbist, trying to learn how to weld components for my 4wd and get mind blown by the types of jobs you encounter. As a result, I've subscribed.
The hardest thing for a small shop is making the transition to having employees. A good worker doesn't always make a good boss. The boss needs to figure what the worker is good at and use that. They can't be as good as you or they would have their own shop. Then stepping back when you are better than they are is really hard. Last is getting out of eyesight. Trusting them. Most kids today will wait till you leave then go screw around. Good luck expanding when this slow economy picks up. You'll do great. Hire a paycheck bookkeeping company with your CPA. That made things really easy for my wife. She got the statements and signed the checks to the government when they told her. That was in the USA but I'm sure you're the same way. TAXES!!! ARGGG!!!
Probably an unfair generalisation of "kids" but even if you got in a part time semi retired person to clean up after jobs, help on the forks/crane, run to suppliers, deliver to customers etc. that alone would save a shitload of time.
Kurtis all you are doing is showing me how things used to be in 1970s thanks for sharing, that is such a typical day in my working life, and i like the fact that you work alone can't trust other people to be as diligent as you my friend :)

Im totally impressed, your knowledge must be a huge asset to the mining and earthmoving community . Having owned and operated heavy equipment most of my life and at times having engineers that don’t understand the stresses and forces involved on many components and not doing repairs properly can cost a fortune in down time .

I am so impressed with your machinist skills, never seen anything like it before.
I can say, as someone in the Land of Bananas, who got out of the lighter side of the Mechanical repair business due to health reasons, we did not have nearly enough people who are able to do what you do, and it's only gotten worse in the last 6 years. We went from diagnosing and fixing the root cause of the problem, to firing the parts cannon at most issues and crying when we couldn't figure it out. We have gone from actual testing of components to needing a computer science degree to figure out that a fuel pump is failing. I lost count of the number of times we could have used someone like you who could fix a major failure of what you would consider a small to medium hydraulic cylinder for refuse vehicles and the smaller Caterpillar machines. and the welding and machining of other parts. Kurtis, I tip my........Christ, I can't even remember what cup of black diesel motor oil coffee I am on at this point. Regardless of what cup I am on, I tip my cup to you. Job well done sir.
The old scool knowledge is gone, and by that I mean no one wants to get dirty and learn old geezers knowledge anymore.
I like this new format. It is lovely and less formal. I hope you do more "a day in the shop" videos in the future in addition to the regular style. As always, great editing job.

Came across your vids just recently and i have to say its nice seeing a man put pride and effort into his work! I enjoy watching the precision work you do!
I’m a science teacher in the USA, I’ve never been a machinist, engineer, welder, or anything like what you guys do….but prior to becoming a teacher, I worked many jobs such as truck driver and commercial fishing boat captain, to name a few- so I appreciate what you do and how it contributes to keeping the world working…As such, I show your videos to my students because they need to know how STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) can lead you to a fulfilling and necessary career. Cheers to you both.
And BTW, I have some aspiring film students who appreciate the exceptional camera work and editing! Thanks for helping me show students how science is relevant.

Just being nosey not critical what they do with, the by the years end, pounds and pounts of different grades and types of metal shavings, do they reclaim or resmelt smelt them there's one guy who's channel deals with reclaiming metal from all kindsa stuff, just wondering 🤔 yeah??!!

Funny that the name "Smoko", for a break has hung around still. It was never common in the UK as such, but was used all the time in the first 15 years of my working life as an engineer in the Merchant Navy, when I was lucky enough to visit Oz on a number of occasions.
Certainly a smoko break for almost all of the crew meant just that, have a couple of fags (cigarettes) and without any tax on them a pack of twenty would have been less than £0.20 in 1975. I had a quick look to see prices now, £16.50 for a pack of 20 B&H, jeezz, I was lucky that I never started to smoke even at those prices.
Totally amazed that Kurtis drinks a frothy cappuccino and not a tripple black espresso. And the videography at the start with the coffee, brilliant, coming along really well.

Kurtis, a few videos back you gave us a biography of how you got into the business. Learning by doing, long days, mistakes and people that supported your career. There are a lot of kids that would give their "left nut" to learn a trade through you. Shops like yours hace a lot of mundane jobs: sweeping, cleaning, grinding that they could do while looking over your shoulder. It shouldn't take long find some young person you could hire at minimum wage.

What I love about kurtus is he does things properly. He has alot of pride in his work and there is no bull sh it in his repairs.

Only just started watching your videos from over here in the UK your machinery is very impressive and some of the jobs you get in look bloody awkward but you just get on with it. Im glad your not uploading every week it proves how busy you are, it also makes the next anticipated video exciting hope you continue to keep busy 👍.

I enjoy watching you work but I am SO glad we got out of the shop for a few! Love to see more around town, getting parts and tools and a bite to eat. That food you got for lunch looked mighty odd using my American eyes but I would have loved to try it.
I opened a far smaller machine shop thirty years ago behind a motorcycle shop, and I remember the cost of picking up all the material handling equipment. You've done a remarkable job collecting some pretty impressive material handling for some pretty difficult aspects of your work, I can only imagine the cost of all of it. you make me wish I were in Australia and could work for you. That phone call, reminds me of so many I received when I opened my shop. They always do what you suggest should never be done, and then you have to fix it. All in a day's work.
I have seen almost all your videos, and I’m pretty confident in saying your are amongst the top in the whole world, for this type of machining.
