You can splice end to end if you un lace a foot or so of the strands and weave them back together. Rope is so much better. So much more you can do. And it’ll never stab you
you should also show how to mend both pieces back together, just in case the failure happens way down the line. Just as easy as what you just posted. Great vid though, truly love your work Matt.
Thank you for this video. Last night we were trying to recover a Jeep with broken hub lockouts from Trail 39 in Windrock and ended up snapping the winch rope twice. Because of this video we were able to splice it back together and get off the trail.
You should stagger where you cut the strands to get a properly tapered bury. Cutting it blunt like you did creates a sharp transition resulting in a weaker splice.... plenty of line manufacturers have guides for proper single braid splicing.
thank you! this great info for those of us doing this in the garage with time to spare. im just removing all of the metal bits off of the end of my winch line and creating a soft loop at the end of my rope and using soft shackles for everything
if you haven't bought the winch line yet check out bleepnjeeps freedom winch line version 3.0 (i know this is an old comment, but his prices have come down and it looks like a great deal for anyone that is already buying winch line)
Boat tie lines and ski ropes have been done like this forever.... Anyone that sails would know!! I was fascinated when they came out using the same rope used for boats for winches. Same used for soft shackles, already making my own. Guess I should do a video on making soft shackles!!!
My rope looks a lot different than that. It has a very tight cover on it. My whole rope is like that red section. Very glad to see more people using synthetic rope.
Nothing new I learned that from my Dad , I just wish I had learned all the knots he had learned when he was in the Navy I seen him put many eyes Nylon rope , he braded it into the robe . Thanks for showing us that way .
1) Not tapering the buried end reduces your overall strength more than you might think (watch HowNotToHighline's Amsteel break test videos). 2) The factory splice that came on your winch line looks like a locked brummel. A locked brummel splice is almost as easy to do and is much more secure than the splice shown in this video. Thanks for all the great vids.
Standing waiting over 5 minutes to see what the title says is the subject of the video. Is there some yt rule that says we should go ahead and skip to the middle of any video to find what we're needing? Sorry but SO much useless crap I just dont have time for.
Hello, I’m wanting to remove my thimble from my 3/8ths Warn Spydura line. Should I use this procedure??? I’m seeing some say to do a taper on the buried portion?! Thanks.
I do this using 7K winch line for my climbing sticks. I do it a bit different, where you went thru twice in the main rope, I only go once, then create a hole in the tag line instead large enough to pull the loop thru then snake the tag line inside the main line, finishing it like you do. Pulling the loop like I do physically twists the rope. No idea if better or worse, just a different.
Great video Matt ! How wrong is it of me to cut someone’s winch rope next time we are out wheeling just so I can show them how cool I am that I can fix it! ❤️🐞

Do I actually need a metal thimble in my winch line- I plan on dumping the fixed hook and go with an open eye and then use a soft shackle- is that sound reasonable? Great videos BTW. Vic in Utah
Awesome video Matt. First, yes on a steel line. Second, say your rope snaps n there's 15 or 20 feet of line or more still on the hook. How effective would that be at connecting the line back to itself? So you don't lose that 20 feet of line
Great point! Heres a good video on that... it takes alot more time and effort however! th-cam.com/video/rIxdFn5A9ho/w-d-xo.html. I would be more inclined to do my method on both ends and just connect the two back together. At least until you got off the trail and then splice them after you get home. Also, with the way I show, you can easily undo it when you get home.
@@bleepinjeep yeah I meant using your method to connect both ends back to each other at least temporarily. My biggest concern is how will it affect winding it back on the winch n could it even be a somewhat permanent fix. But I'll definitely check out the video link too

Have you learned how to splice two synthetic winch lines together? Knowing how to splice the two-pieces together is more useful when a synthetic winch line breaks. The best part is that the winch line only becomes about 4-feet shorter.
there are vids where you undo the windings. then coil together to make a loop with a tail. pretty simple and strong. I could be wrong but I think its a molly loop

How would you splice 2 end together if your winch rope snapped closer to the drum and don't want to end up with 10ft winch line.
