Creating a fixed eye in your Amsteel Blue Winch Line

  • How to create a fixed eye in 3/8 Amsteel Blue. This is for trail repairs when you have limited access to tools and materials. The process is the same for any diameter Amsteel Blue other than different bury lengths. 5/16 would be 13", 3/8 would be 16", 7/16 would be 18.5". I have tested this extensively using half of each suggested bury length in a locked brummel and all have held while the failure occurs in the line. I would suggest replacing the whipping with the lock stich, or performing a locked brummel when you return from your trip.

    Thanks Kris, very clean eye for the wench. Don't need an ugly knot at the end of my wench rope. My kid is a mountain climber, he would use the other knot. Two different applications.

    a very informative video, I use a zig zag stitch with some small shock cord to finish it off. we also use a tube thimble when it is for use with amsteel blue, that way, the thimble can't drop out of the eye if the rope gets stretched. cheers

    VERY cool. You are a great teacher. Thank you for taking the time to share such a cool technique. I am creating a fixed eye in a winch cable right now. It's only for an ATV plow, but I plan to lockstitch this badboy since most of my customers hold the switch for too long stressing the cable while reeling in the cable. :-)

    Nice video. Wish the person who pretty much verbally assaulted you knew what he was talking about. Its a shame people will take away from this that a figure eight on a bight is acceptable for winching and rigging. He might also check out Samson's website where it states that as a 12 strand class 2 rope, this splice will maintain 90 to 100% of the ropes strength new and used. I would also hate to damage that wonderful figure eight on a bight (or is it bite?), when it is pulled against the fairlead, then I guess you can tie another and another. But I guess thats what happens when you really have no idea as to what you are talking about. Great job Kris

    Seems to me, a better location for the yellow/black whipping would be a bit farther into the rope from the eye. The outer woven rope tightens against the inner end like a Chinese finger puzzle under tension. But before tension is applied, the inside end can slide apart more easily. It should keep the inner end in place better if the end of it is anchored into the tightening outer layer.
    Also, when the end is pulled through the side and the tape is removed, I wonder if binding the cut ends together with an adhesive would be beneficial. I wouldn't use an adhesive that cures hard. If the adhesive binds the inner end to the outer weaving, that could result in uneven stresses on fibers of the outer line when it is tensioned. Maybe a small amount of clear silicone adhesive. The adhesive should be allowed to cure while the line and eye splice is under tension.

  • @oneiota878
    @oneiota878 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Seems to me that you won't have to be so precise with the taper if all it was for was to feed the end through the middle. There is a better way. Much more time involved but worth it to make a self-locking braid.

    • @paulojanen5045
      @paulojanen5045 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A good taper serves more to maintain the strength of the rope. If there was no taper, the harsh transition where the bury stops would contribute to a weakened rope for the same reasons as a knot.

    • @consaka1
      @consaka1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Joey Withers You mean the metal piece that is in the loop end of many ropes? If so that is there to protect the rope. Any slight movement of the rope under tensions can either cause a failure or some pretty serious wear. For instance say your steel shackle has a bur on it. That bur would damage your rope where the metal in your "thimble" will protect it.

    So ive watched this video, and your video on doing a locked Brummell with one end of the rope. You say the locked Brummell is a more permanent fix. So out of curiosity, since the locked Brummell appears to only need tape and a knife, and the technique in this video requires something to stitch it with, why wouldn't you just do the locked Brummell in the first place?

    • @opie0074
      @opie0074  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Because a locked brummel, if you are going to have something in the eye such as a thimble, hook etc, requires access to both ends of the line. If the line is spooled on a winch, its more work to pull all the line off just to gain access to both ends.

    • @pierremitham2964
      @pierremitham2964 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @opie0074
      @opie0074  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bryan Teal Yes, very important. And as stiff as you can get it. In the future, sometimes it helps if you can use something to open up the line prior to starting the bury. Knitting needles work well and if you get one of the hollow ones, you can cut off the blunt end and use it as a fid.

      I did open a "hole", with a dental flosser:) I found that the tip, if too large, would catch and if too small, would sneak out the side, prematurely. Eventually, I got the tip size just right and made two eyes in just a few minutes:)

    • @Citizen8700

      technically a marlin spike is for wire cable/rope. fids are for soft lines

    • @biggest23
      @biggest23 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, marlinspikes predate wire cable/rope and were specifically designed for working with rope and twine. They have an expanded role since the invention of wire cable/rope but they are originally and still a rope working tool. Fids are generally made of wood, bone or UHMW and as such are limited to soft line work. Marlin spikes do much more because they are made of metal but their original function is still the same.
