    You can also use a section of metal hanger wire to pull the winch rope through the center of the other half. Bend the wire in half, use pliers to put a point on the bent end, and put tape over any cut ends on the wire to secure the line to it. It makes it very easy to pull it through the inside of the rope. A section of hanger wire can easily be stored in the back of the Jeep. Used this method on the trail and it worked great.

    Additional tip - tape the end of the line to the end of the extension - makes this repair a whole lot easier...

    Nice vid! Def helpful. I suggest you tape the tapered end to the metal extension so they don’t detach when you fish it through the winch line.

    Excellent tip to use the socket extension. I wonder if you could use electrical tape to attach the tappered line to the thick end of the socket extension to help pull it through

    With the Facter5 hook couldn't you thread the rope thru the thimble with out removing the pin when doing a trail repair ? Great video always wondered how this repair is done .

    • @JKGearandGadgets
      @JKGearandGadgets  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Possibly, sometimes removing the old line from the thimble is difficult. But it would be worth a shot if you couldn’t remove the pin!

    Nice trail repair. If you are back off the trail, an eye splice (marine type) works better, and you lose less length....although it IS a lot more involved.

    So what about putting an eye in both ends of the broken piece of rope? If it's 20' long that could get you that little extra length you need to reach out to an anchor point. And it takes up less room than a strap does. Or make soft shackles out of it.

    • @DarkSoulBaja
      @DarkSoulBaja 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to keep the winch line as long as possible, you can do an in-line splice and then just a spliced eye at the end, but realistically you will still lose at least half of that 20' in the bury (which is where the strength comes from). The only thing i would change in this video is used what's called a locked Brummell splice, and actually tape the line to the socket extension like a real fid.

    Lovely part about synthetic rope is it's so fixable, for plowing snow on with a ATV or SxS , if you line breaks, pull out about 10 feet, then at the ten ft mark expand the rope, feed the cut 45' end into the expanded part of the rope at the 10ft mark. Sew and tie with a needle n fishing line. Now run the rope as a double line, super strong and no more worries about breaking the rope while plowing snow. Come spring, cut the fishing line and expand the jointed spot, pull the rope out and your back to long rope. This idea also works if the rope is in bad shape but pull all the rope out and splice then your at half length but way strong enough to rescue yourself.

    I still have a cable, can't make up my mind to switch to rope.sorta worried that if it's that easy to cut,how much better is it than the old steel cable?

    • @JKGearandGadgets
      @JKGearandGadgets  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s actually fairly hard to cut. Personally I prefer synthetic. It’s lighter and safer, and can sometimes last longer if you use your winch often.

    If there would be some heat shrink tubing (or whatcha call it in english) in your toolback (which I have), wouldn't that work nicely as well instead of that e-tape? And while putting that e-tape or heat shrink, just put some stick or any smallish rod on it too so you could kinda use it as a sewing needle to get the rope through easily? 🤔
