A beautiful, sad song, and now that I know he wrote it about his parents (not just his father) who had passed, it's even more sad, and brings tears to my eyes.
I was 7 when my dad died, and 28 when I lost my mom. I'm 65 now, and have lived more of my life without them than with them. Time is not guaranteed to anyone, and life is so fleeting. Make the time to tell the special people in your life that you love them.
One other thing. About the sequins on the jean jacket - hey, it was the 70s! Enuff said.
I lost my dad when I was 29. I’m now 48. I still bawl like a baby at this song
Me too. I lost my dad when i was 18 years old. This song remember my dad .
I was 16 years old when the "call" came. My dad just died and my life changed forever. Went thru it again at 39 with my mom. This song hits so hard.
Damn! This song still hits the heart hard🙏💕😞
My dad passed in 1991 and I officially became an orphan in 2017 when my mother passed. It took me months to deal with the thought that even though I was an adult I was on this globe for the first time in my life w/o my parents.
You are showing your age...Bread was one of the greatest bands from the late 60's to early seventies. Their greatest hits album was one of the best in rock and roll history. Back when I went to high from 1969 to 1972 they were one of the biggest and most played bands on radio. Today at 67 years old... Bread is listen to in my household, and it never grows old. Great reaction and post.
Glad you found bread . One of the most listenable bands ever. Beautiful playing singing and meaning to their songs. I saw them in melbourne about 25 years ago and omg what a special night. Long live David gates and rest in peace to the other band members who have passed on.
We feel our losses as we listen to this song, but can you imagine how he felt singing this? Sobering.
I don't know anyone who didn't love the music of David Gates and Bread. Baby I'ma Want You, Goodbye Girl, Diary...all great songs. Don't know how the group name came about, but back in the day we decorated our bellbottoms and jean jackets with patches and metal studs and such. Great video; I was in tears.
Back in 1969 in Cali when they were just starting to form their band they were on the highway and they were in back of a Wonder Bread truck so that's what made them come up with the name for the group
@@jillybean3688 that’s cool to know!!!!🥔🥖
I don't know, either. This still puts me to tears every time I listen to it. I miss my father greatly.
@@jillybean3688 I guess we are lucky they didn't name the band Diesel Fumes.
puppygirl13830. I did all those things! Had a Blue Jean Jacket that had all kinds of Patches I would buy that I liked & Metal Studs & also had a Chambry Shirt ( it was a Man’s Shirt ) that I Embrodered Flower’s & Words & Symbols on & it was really Cool. I would also write Mine & My Boyfriend’s Name on my Jeans & draw on them, I’m surprised my Parents didn’t kill me ( ground me ) for it but they didn’t, my Mom just laughed about it! 70’s were by far the coolest decade!!! I relive it thru my music.
Hi Chad, one of my favorites that Bread recorded is a song called “IF”
This is a song that is short, but so powerful. The lead singer David Gates had the most beautiful pure voice.
Another great one is called “Diary
Another heart tugging song.
Listen to it carefully, because the ending will really grab you. Their love songs were awesome. The early 70’s
Totally agree with you ❣️
Yes, this is a real tear jerker!! Written after the death of one of the band members father. I, for years thought it was about loosing a boy/girl friend or lover. But it’s about death. So touching.
❤️💜💚
I think it is about his father.
It's about David Gate's Father, not just one of the band's.
This song reminds me of my beloved father who passed l love my dad adore him and this song just touched my heart ❤️
It is a wonderfully simple yet emotionally overwhelming.
A Bread truck happened to drive by while the guys were looking for a name for the group, so that's why they adopted the name, according to 'The Professor of Rock'.
I forgot how beautiful this song is. My Mom passed April 2019, thank you so much for featuring this song it's taken a new meaning to me. I miss my Mom so very much.
So sorry about your mother. Interesting fact. This song was written after the death of one of the members fathers. A real tear jerker. May your mother RIP. I wish well. Smile my friend!
❤️💜💚
@@pdmullgirl
Hi Paige, Thank you so much for your caring words they warmed my heart, I miss my Mom so very much. Thank you my friend much love, stay safe and healthy. God Bless
@Linda Garcia - I lost my mom in August 2019, and this song is also meaningful to me. Her birthday just past a few days ago and I'm missing my mom so much!
@@pdmullgirl, David Gates wrote the song right after the death of his Father- a couple years before they actually recorded it...
@@janetbelrose2784 Thank you my dear for the information. I love music trivia.
❤️💜💚
Just a heartbreaking, beautiful song about loss. Really, any kind of loss. This song was a hit on the radio about the time my mother took our dog to get put down. I was still a child and didn't know a lot about dog care. Looking back, there were things we could have done better for her. Even though my mom thought she was sparing me pain, she took her while I was at school and I didn't get to say goodbye. That was like, 45 years ago, and the bridge, "Is there someone you know you're loving them so.....and they don't hear the words you long to say" still make me cry.
@cl2047 so sorry. It stinks, I know.
We're all with you, we've all been there ✌️
I lost a brother, my mother and my father. Thankfully not all at once. But you just don't get over the pain of deep loss.
This song was released the year my mother died; I was 15 at the time.
I played and sang this at my Mothers funeral. By the time it was over, the entire congregation had joined in.
4:20, the essence of this beautiful piece.
Me and my Dad never connected passed in 2012 miss him never gonna get the chance to put it right
So people do it now if you can.
Mike and the mechanics
In the living years
Great band!! Many hits love my 70/80s
This song is about his father. YES a true reaction video. 👏
I was a daddy's girl. Four years and I miss him every day 😢 💔
It's one of those songs that grabs you when you least expect it ...I lost my mom in 015 /dad in 018. I learned just last week this song was about him losing his dad . Now it has new meaning for me. This kind of song touches deep and lets you know there's more to life than life itself. Thank you for this! I needed it!
This song is 50 years old! Wow! ❤
Listen to all of his ballads. He was one of the greatest songwriters of the last 70 years. From Tulsa.
These guys had the magic. Sadly they have been forgotten over time even though they were very successful with many magical songs.
You are the first reactor I've heard that started out with my favorite Bread song. I don't just cry, but I sob when I hear this. (Kind of the same thing that happens to me when Kevin Costner's character in "Field of Dreams" asks his dad if he wants to "have a catch.") David Gates, another do-it-all talent, singing, playing, and writing. A lot of songs out there are lamenting lost love or sending love; but this song is unique in that it could be said to be about those things, which makes it a good song. Many can relate in their own ways, but the loss of a parent is so powerful I cried when you played it and I'm crying as I write this. Great choice. Thank you.
Diary is another great Bread song
David wrote this about his dads death. As a kid I always thought it w as a long song and its funny its sort of masquerade as a lovers plea to have his lover back. I was so so young when this came out so of course I didn't understand that it was written for his dad. Many songwriters kind of take their cue from that. Im showing my diverse musical genre here but mark slaughter of slaughter wrote fly to the angels about a girl he was close to who took her life while he went out on tour. The video makes it same like a tribute to Amelia ernheart. She was a famous female pilot first woman that flew around the world and disappeared. Rumor was she ran out of gas in mid flight ✈️.
I love bread. I think they are one of my favs from this era.
Their first album is amazing Chad.
Love for you to do why you keep me waiting and I want you with me. The album is on the waters.
Oh by the way bread 🍞 was slang fir money 💰 thats how they were named🤣 pretty cool huh?
He wrote this song for his dad you passed away 😔
What a marvelous songwriter and musician David is. He could write some great rocking songs, too, but the ballads were what he has always been best known for. "Let Your Love Go" is a great rocker.
Saw Bread in concert in 1975 and both me and my fiancé were crying during this song...
This song is exactly how I feel about my dad who passed away in 1981 and my mom who passed in 2020
Absolutely beautiful song! Bread is life, as the saying goes. We break bread together. That's the arena of the band's name.
I sure do remember this song, I just didn't know the band. Beautiful song. 👍👍😍. Thanks Chad 💞💞💞
I’ve always loved this song, and David Gates’voice is rich and beautiful.Just for a second, there, facially,he reminded me of Chris Isaac, who’s voice is also amazing.
Those weren't sequins that jacket was BEDAZZLED!! LOL Wonderful reaction to a beautiful song!
David Gates singer songwriter guitarist producer many great songs most of his songs were emotional about lost love as for his jacket Rhinestone Cowboy a Glen Campbell song about the same time David is still with us 80 years old.love and peace
I like glenn Campbell. Southern nights.
David Gates and Bread were a Band that was popular throughout the decade of the 1970s. David Gates eventually went solo, as is usually the case of the most talented person in the Band. Excellent vocals and lyrics in all of their songs. Chicks loved these guys more then the guys did.
Bread always takes me to another place. The most beautiful voice with David Gates and gut retching lyrics.
Great reaction and you did amazing! Thank you for playing this song.
Bread is one of my favorite groups ever. Lots of history with me. I would listen to their song "If." Short -- but powerful. Thank you for researching the songs. Most so-called "Reactionists" know nothing about the song or even the group, then they don't understand the song. For example, someone doing a reaction to Marcelito Pomoy singing "The Prayer, and they do not even know it was a duet between Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli -- so they don't even "get it." I would definitely watch that incredible performance
th-cam.com/video/x462Hia_7hU/w-d-xo.html and Narito Ako which is not in English, but beautiful to hear. th-cam.com/video/t9k1SlmKFno/w-d-xo.html
Reality...hello, and thanks for watching. Good news! If you browse my channel page, you'll see my reaction to "The Prayer." It's incredible, I agree!
th-cam.com/channels/_kO-RSx50t-oBzq2JIK_2A.html
I agree with what you say about most reactors. One popular one did a tribute to Eddie Van Halen after he died, and kept praising David Lee Roth's performance, mistaking him for Eddie. Just basic research -- e.g. looking at a photo -- could have prevented that error. And how many times can you hear how great that song would be at a cookout or driving your car with the top down? Chad brings a lot more to the reactions.
I lost my dad about 3 months ago. He wasn’t always the best dad. I was angry at him much of the time, yet, this song rings true for me and makes me grieve his loss.
So sorry for your loss. Thanks for your feedback and for watching.
Let me tell you, as someone who's dad and mom is gone I listen to this at least once a week when I think of them....
Perhaps when that stage of your life comes you to will be compelled to revisit this track...
🥀Beautiful Song! Brilliant lyrics vocals and music! My Mama took me to see them in Concert in 1972 or 72¿ When David Gates came out to sing this song he came out alone sat at his piano explained that he wrote this his Father I cried like a baby. I love this song. You have a huge heart & that's what makes you feel the lyrics and are very much passion in music. Thank you for sharing your life n love in the music industry. 🥀☝️🥀
I was a teenager in the 70's, Bread wasn't my thing, but every time Bread released a single it went to the top of the charts, and I would buy a copy( How music was sold and judged back then). David Gates had a gift for writing fantastic music and songs. I used my ears to judge back then, nowadays my heart recognises the fact even more! You may not want to hear this type of song everyday, but when you're still listening to it forty plus years later, you know it's special.
Thew most beautiful !! to a father that ever existed!!!
You should hear "Baby ima want you " and "If" and many more !
My dad died when I was 10 and I recall having a specific dream of walking with him on a certain street, that dream recurred often in the first few years after he passed. The loss of a father is very hard for a young child. In contrast, my mom just passed recently, almost exactly 50 years later; I haven't had any recurrent dream of being with her, perhaps because I spent a full lifetime with her. Though every so often I'm cooking something and I'll want to call her and ask advice about the meal, then I realize oh I can't do it anymore. It would be wonderful to have them each back one more time.
I always thought it was like the "Bread of Life", thus the correlation was like *our music sustains your soul* ..........BRAVO !!
From Wikipedia regarding how the band got its name: A bread truck came along right at the time we were trying to think of a name. We had been saying, "How about bush, telephone pole? Ah, bread truck, bread." It began with a B, like the Beatles and the Bee Gees. Bread also had a kind of universal appeal. It could be taken a number of ways. Of course, for the entire first year people called us the Breads.
Haven't heard this in a long time. Bread wrote and sang some lovely songs. Like your honest reaction x
This is my go-to karaoke song. I LOVE sad songs even if they make me cry.
Yes. I cried when I heard this. Ty.
I love this song ! You gonna give everything to you're beloved , even you're life . Don't worry I subscribed to you're channel. From Ridgecrest California.
I didn't know what the inspiration was for this song, but I do know this song took them to the top of the charts! I'm dating myself here but I used to have their album...One of my favorites!
Gorgeous. Classic. Timeless.
Awesome song and band! Another great 70's hit by Bread.
Great review Chad... it certainly does pull hard at your heart strings.
Thank you for your perspective on this song. It’s quite meaningful, especially if you’ve lost a loved one. To answer your question about the jean jacket, those were metal studs that were applied to it. It was a common thing to do to jeans and jackets back in the 1970s.
Its not quite right.. although it is about his father..it was more about his mother's reaction to an orchid he sent when they lived in California...and his parents lived in Tulsa.. his father told him that "you could have had anything she owned.."... he changed it to "Everything I own..and when his father died, David remembered the thought.. and wrote the song for both of them.. David says as much during a Q&A session in Mt Vernon, WA... check it out.. The song is one of many beautiful, rather haunting song he wrote.
Did you know that this song was written about his father? It’s one of the most beautiful songs ever I absolutely love David Gates and bread. The song ~if- is probably one of the top five most beautiful love songs I’ve ever heard.
It's a beautiful song.
I'm a HUGE Bread fan - ever since high school ('74 grad / aka: old lady!) The very first time I met my brother-in-law to be, (a bit of a hippie and a really good musician) he'd piled into the back of our car and saw my 8 tracks, including my Bread music. Before he said "Hi" or anything, he looked up at me, smiled and said, "What a mellow head!" David took his own life a few years later and I'll never forget that moment with him...
_Sorry to hear about your B-I-L. Losing loved ones is never easy. Thanks for your interactions on the 3L! I love reading all the comments._
@@hereonthe3L - Thanks Chad!!! 😘
TOTAL RESPECT Chad .... love honesty .... totally beautiful but ya cant come away on a positive.
Interesting as my twenty something daughters and nieces have found Bread and love this. One person's opinion. The sequins are probably from the country roots (Oklahoma) of David Gates. I think that might be dressed up in Oklahoma. I never get sick of his voice.
The members of the group were sitting out and discussing the names for the group n David Gates saw a bread truck n suggested Bread...what a fitting name as they very wholesome songs🙏😇
This song is dedicated to his father.
This is one of my all-time favorite bands I love bread
I used to call them White Bread. Their songs were soft as eating white bread. Funny thing is that I was in high school when these songs were hits, on the radio constantly. I didn't care for the group. They were too soft. In my late years, I have grown to enjoy them. Funny how that works.
YES, MY MUM AND DAD ARE GONE AND IT'S HEARTBREAKING TO NOT HAVE THEM, YES NOBODY WOULD EVER KNOW HOW YOU WOULD GIVE UP EVERYTHING JUST TO HAVE THEM BACK EVEN FOR A SHORT TIME AS THEY TOOK AWAY MY HEART AND SOUL WHEN THEY LEFT XXX
I've always had Bread - Anthology in my collection, but don't routinely play their heavier songs. Sometimes a person doesn't want to visit, or revisit, events that hurt them, even if those events are certainties.
I lost my Mom August, 2016, so this song speaks to me, reminding me of the loss, but also comforting me in the knowledge that others, David in this case, feel the same way about their loved ones, and experience the same sadness. It's therapeutic in a way.
Btw, sequins were popular in that music ers.
God will take care of all those hard and empty feelings. By the way, on another note, here humanly speaking that is, I just don't know how in the hell can the singer hold it together and keep going without completely coming undone, specially about his father. Wow, and don't come with, he's an artist, cause damn, that would tough still.
Don't know about the name, but they were one of biggest groups in 1970s. He's from Texas, and sequins comes from his country and western background
Last I heard, and it's been several years ago, David Gates (the one singing) was the only surviving member of this wonderful group :(
iv'e just found your reaction channel, and enjoy it very much..a few other songs along this same line you may like are dan fogelbergs "leader of the band" mike and the mechanics "the living years" luther van dross "dance with my father again" and vince gill "go rest hi on that mountain"

Hi Chad! I heard a "new" Maurice song, "Railroad". Have you heard it? Nice voice and thought of you when I heard it! Have a nice day!!!
I had just bought a Bread album spring 1972 and stopped by my brothers house. I was going to play it. I turned around and there was my nephew on the album scooting across the brick flooring. I wonder if this was a song on it......I love my nephew and my brother's family.
Lol. I guess you'll never know.....
@@hereonthe3L Now, thanks to your listing this
This was on the Album. It was Spring 1972. We always had music going in the background, the car, in the bathroom getting ready to go somewhere, and when my Dad wanted me to go work for him (summertime), my heart lit up. He had a great FM radio at work playing. I asked him if I could turn the channel and he said yes. He trusted me. I loved pop and classical .
Most underrated band ever!!!
There are certain instruments that, if used correctly at the right time can bring out strong emotions. The violin track in this piece does that for me. It's possible they're real but are probably synthetic. It makes no difference. The violin sound has that ability to draw out emotion, and in this song, it does that successfully. It's a beautiful song with a very strong message, but when the violins swell during the last refrain it's almost too much to bear, but I listen anyway.
Love Bread. Great memories of the 70s.
"If" by bread please check it
CHAD SUMMER..MY NAME IS MARY LOU. I NEED YOU TO KNOW YOUR A WONDERFUL MAN WHO LOVES GOD. YOUR VERY KIND TO EVERY ONE. I GREW UP WITH THE BEE-GEES. The newly formed band was looking for a name for their band when they were driving and happened to be following a Barbara Ann Bread truck.
Lead singer, writer is David Gates from Tulsa. Brilliant writer.

Listen to the songs, they are awesome.

David Gates the singer, is a great poet. Bread a fab band, almost any of their songs you chose to listen to and you would not be disappointed.
