My dad passed in 1991 and I officially became an orphan in 2017 when my mother passed. It took me months to deal with the thought that even though I was an adult I was on this globe for the first time in my life w/o my parents.

A beautiful, sad song, and now that I know he wrote it about his parents (not just his father) who had passed, it's even more sad, and brings tears to my eyes.

I was 7 when my dad died, and 28 when I lost my mom. I'm 65 now, and have lived more of my life without them than with them. Time is not guaranteed to anyone, and life is so fleeting. Make the time to tell the special people in your life that you love them.
One other thing. About the sequins on the jean jacket - hey, it was the 70s! Enuff said.

You are showing your age...Bread was one of the greatest bands from the late 60's to early seventies. Their greatest hits album was one of the best in rock and roll history. Back when I went to high from 1969 to 1972 they were one of the biggest and most played bands on radio. Today at 67 years old... Bread is listen to in my household, and it never grows old. Great reaction and post.

Glad you found bread . One of the most listenable bands ever. Beautiful playing singing and meaning to their songs. I saw them in melbourne about 25 years ago and omg what a special night. Long live David gates and rest in peace to the other band members who have passed on.

Hi Chad, one of my favorites that Bread recorded is a song called “IF”
This is a song that is short, but so powerful. The lead singer David Gates had the most beautiful pure voice.
Another great one is called “Diary
    Another heart tugging song.
Listen to it carefully, because the ending will really grab you. Their love songs were awesome. The early 70’s

Don't know how the group name came about, but back in the day we decorated our bellbottoms and jean jackets with patches and metal studs and such. Great video; I was in tears.

Had a Blue Jean Jacket that had all kinds of Patches I would buy that I liked & Metal Studs & also had a Chambry Shirt ( it was a Man’s Shirt ) that I Embrodered Flower’s & Words & Symbols on & it was really Cool. I would also write Mine & My Boyfriend’s Name on my Jeans & draw on them, I’m surprised my Parents didn’t kill me ( ground me ) for it but they didn’t, my Mom just laughed about it! 70’s were by far the coolest decade!!! I relive it thru my music.

Just a heartbreaking, beautiful song about loss. Really, any kind of loss. This song was a hit on the radio about the time my mother took our dog to get put down. I was still a child and didn't know a lot about dog care. Looking back, there were things we could have done better for her. Even though my mom thought she was sparing me pain, she took her while I was at school and I didn't get to say goodbye. That was like, 45 years ago, and the bridge, "Is there someone you know you're loving them so.....and they don't hear the words you long to say" still make me cry.

David wrote this about his dads death. As a kid I always thought it w as a long song and its funny its sort of masquerade as a lovers plea to have his lover back. I was so so young when this came out so of course I didn't understand that it was written for his dad. Many songwriters kind of take their cue from that. Im showing my diverse musical genre here but mark slaughter of slaughter wrote fly to the angels about a girl he was close to who took her life while he went out on tour. The video makes it same like a tribute to Amelia ernheart. She was a famous female pilot first woman that flew around the world and disappeared. Rumor was she ran out of gas in mid flight ✈️.
I love bread. I think they are one of my favs from this era.
Their first album is amazing Chad.
Love for you to do why you keep me waiting and I want you with me. The album is on the waters.

You are the first reactor I've heard that started out with my favorite Bread song. I don't just cry, but I sob when I hear this. (Kind of the same thing that happens to me when Kevin Costner's character in "Field of Dreams" asks his dad if he wants to "have a catch.") David Gates, another do-it-all talent, singing, playing, and writing. A lot of songs out there are lamenting lost love or sending love; but this song is unique in that it could be said to be about those things, which makes it a good song. Many can relate in their own ways, but the loss of a parent is so powerful I cried when you played it and I'm crying as I write this. Great choice. Thank you.

I was a teenager in the 70's, Bread wasn't my thing, but every time Bread released a single it went to the top of the charts, and I would buy a copy( How music was sold and judged back then). David Gates had a gift for writing fantastic music and songs. I used my ears to judge back then, nowadays my heart recognises the fact even more! You may not want to hear this type of song everyday, but when you're still listening to it forty plus years later, you know it's special.

Bread is one of my favorite groups ever. Lots of history with me. I would listen to their song "If." Short -- but powerful. Thank you for researching the songs. Most so-called "Reactionists" know nothing about the song or even the group, then they don't understand the song. For example, someone doing a reaction to Marcelito Pomoy singing "The Prayer, and they do not even know it was a duet between Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli -- so they don't even "get it." I would definitely watch that incredible performance
th-cam.com/video/x462Hia_7hU/w-d-xo.html and Narito Ako which is not in English, but beautiful to hear. th-cam.com/video/t9k1SlmKFno/w-d-xo.html

I agree with what you say about most reactors. One popular one did a tribute to Eddie Van Halen after he died, and kept praising David Lee Roth's performance, mistaking him for Eddie. Just basic research -- e.g. looking at a photo -- could have prevented that error. And how many times can you hear how great that song would be at a cookout or driving your car with the top down? Chad brings a lot more to the reactions.

From Wikipedia regarding how the band got its name: A bread truck came along right at the time we were trying to think of a name. We had been saying, "How about bush, telephone pole? Ah, bread truck, bread." It began with a B, like the Beatles and the Bee Gees. Bread also had a kind of universal appeal. It could be taken a number of ways. Of course, for the entire first year people called us the Breads.

Its not quite right.. although it is about his father..it was more about his mother's reaction to an orchid he sent when they lived in California...and his parents lived in Tulsa.. his father told him that "you could have had anything she owned.."... he changed it to "Everything I own..and when his father died, David remembered the thought.. and wrote the song for both of them.. David says as much during a Q&A session in Mt Vernon, WA... check it out.. The song is one of many beautiful, rather haunting song he wrote.

I've always had Bread - Anthology in my collection, but don't routinely play their heavier songs. Sometimes a person doesn't want to visit, or revisit, events that hurt them, even if those events are certainties.
I lost my Mom August, 2016, so this song speaks to me, reminding me of the loss, but also comforting me in the knowledge that others, David in this case, feel the same way about their loved ones, and experience the same sadness. It's therapeutic in a way.
Btw, sequins were popular in that music ers.

There are certain instruments that, if used correctly at the right time can bring out strong emotions. The violin track in this piece does that for me. It's possible they're real but are probably synthetic. It makes no difference. The violin sound has that ability to draw out emotion, and in this song, it does that successfully. It's a beautiful song with a very strong message, but when the violins swell during the last refrain it's almost too much to bear, but I listen anyway.

It's a beautiful melody. You can definitely listen to it more than once. And the lyrics are ambiguous. It could be a tribute to a parent, but also could apply to a lost lover. Tbh, most ppl who love this song probably didn't really know about the father tribute.

Bread's singles were on the softer side, but their albums were full of variety. They could play Eagles style rock to songs with a bit of funk (Fancy Dancer) One song you should review by them is "Our Lady Of Sorrow" sung by the bands other singer James Griffin. It deals with a woman fighting addiction.

From David Gates - - - A bread truck came along right at the time we were trying to think of a name. We had been saying, "How about bush, telephone pole? Ah, bread truck, bread." It began with a B, like the Beatles and the Bee Gees. Bread also had a kind of universal appeal. It could be taken a number of ways. Of course, for the entire first year people called us the Breads.

I'm a HUGE Bread fan - ever since high school ('74 grad / aka: old lady!) The very first time I met my brother-in-law to be, (a bit of a hippie and a really good musician) he'd piled into the back of our car and saw my 8 tracks, including my Bread music. Before he said "Hi" or anything, he looked up at me, smiled and said, "What a mellow head!" David took his own life a few years later and I'll never forget that moment with him...
