The original is an all-time classic, but I must say this is one of the very, very rare instances where I actually prefer the live version. Having the accompanying orchestra and background vocals just adds a special richness to it all. Spectacular!

Hey guys - what a great choice. This is one of the greatest songs of the 60s, but this rendition with the Danish National Symphony is straight-up next level beautiful, absolutely fantastic - Gary Brooker somehow sounds even more powerful than he did in his twenties. Goosebumps guaranteed - peace and love from Canada!

Interesting. I'm not suggesting I got it 'right,' because I knew she'd love any good voice. But I'd taken it that she smiled at the applause more than the voice. Which brings me to the thought; she's a singer, and as one, it must be an amazing thing to think you could become the sort of singer that has songs where, you could hit only one or two notes, and just that alone would load a whole whack of joy into the audience's minds.

They pronounced themselves as "Pro-Cole" "Hair-em". That song was released in 1967 and it was HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE back in my days. This version with the orchestra, however, blows the original studio version away hands down. What a classic. This is one of those songs that a band just can't follow up. They had other great tunes but nothing like Whiter Shade Of Pale

The TV network I used to work for produced the "In Concert" series that included, (among many others), Procol Harum. It's why a symphony as minor as Edmonton's could end up being a part of a live platinum album. His voice seems remarkably similar--and just as good--as it was back then.

    • @dbradx
      @dbradx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@s.mcpherson6354 That's so cool, I'd always wondered how the heck they would have connected with the Edmonton Symphony. I agree with you on Gary's voice - I saw Procul Harum open for Jethro Tull in Toronto back in about 1993 and I think he sounds every bit as great in this performance as he did back then.

I'm nudging 70. One of the (few) advantages of age is we grew up when some of the best music was made, including this piece. So 2006 in Denmark people are enjoying and some discovering for the first time. What a privilege we had to live in those times. Yes, there were troubles but is the world better or worse today. I think the latter. Wouldn't life be sooo much better if we could just enjoy good music and respect humanity. Greetings from Tasmania, Australia. mark

My mother, who was an organist for our church choir back in the day, wasn't necessarily a rock fan, but if something had a good keyboard she usually liked it. The original version of this song was one of those. The organ really hit the right notes (pun intended) with her. this is a good version, but I miss the prominent organ some.

    • @oldmanghost219

It is very difficult to separate one's feelings that are triggered by a song like this, considering the time frame. In 1974, shortly after finishing my tour of duty in the service (USN), I was staying with some friends in Arlington, VA. We took the trip across the Potomac to the Kennedy Center, where we had the immense privilege of seeing Procol Harum perform many of their songs, but especially this one and “Conquistador”, both of which were (and are) amazing! Of course, there (in DC), they also had a full orchestra and choir to accompany them, and it was such an awesome experience that I have since then chosen to abstain from any other major concerts, instinctively inuiting that nothing else would ever measure up to that magical memory. As a result, the recollection still pulses sweetly and powerfully in my heart to this day. Thank you for sharing this with us!

Everyone always plays this video. Gary’s voice is still good but people should see the 67-68 version. I thought it was good then and all these years later it is still a timeless song.👍
When Gary looks at the Orchestra I wonder if he’s thinking..please don’t turn this into elevator music.🤬

Your right, Frank. This was the greatest song of the 1960s in my book.

      It was their idea!
This is the best version ever recorded, and his voice is WAY better here than it was on the original.

This song was a song of the young men who were headed to Vietnam, the verse " she said there is no reason, the truth is plain to see, and the verse one of sixteen vestal virgins who were leaving for the coast, my older brother left for Vietnam and left out of San Francisco. Great song, old or new version. Thanks.

My mom was 5 months pregnant with me when this came out (I’m 53). This song, like most 60’s and 70’s rock has been the soundtrack of my childhood and life because my dad was so cool and he exposed me to such good music. He died in 2018 but this is one of the old songs that always makes me think of him. #ripdaddy

Gary Brooker’s voice hasn’t changed in 50 plus years. Check out “Conquistador”. The origins of this band’s name is interesting.

There are a lot of things I like about watching you two react. For one you are so open to most musical genres. There are a lot of reactors who are doing reactions to music that they have never heard, and you can tell they are pretending to like everything. You guys genuinely seem to like and appreciate the music. I love watching Asia's face when she watches. The immediate smile when she realizes that it is good, and the serious face as you are trying to take everything in and not miss anything. Very genuine. I appreciate y'all keeping it real. Keep it up.

The singer Gary Brooker just passed away Feb. 19th of cancer. I first heard him sing this when I was 12 years old in 1967. I am 65 now and he sounded better here than in 1967.

Pronounced Pro- cole Hair-um. A great band from the 60's. The singer Gary Brooker has just passed away this week, at 76. My heart is broken. His voice was as amazing years after (there is a you tube video of a concert from 2016 & he sounds & looks just as good) as it was when it released in 1967. RIP Gary.

Gary had been singing this song for over FIFTY years and still had pipes! As many here, I have loved this for, well, 50 years but I really like this concert video as much, if not more, than the studio version.

i love the French horn, too. i never used to buy singles, after the age of 11, but this became my favourite single, straight away, and still is; followed quite closely by 'Nights In White Satin', by the Moody Blues.
