The first ever Hell in a Cell match took place at Badd Blood: In Your House on October 5th 1997. The Undertaker battled Shawn Michaels for a shot at the WWF Championship inside this new steel structure, and the match would become one of the best matches in the history of the WWE.
When Shawn Michaels cost The Undertaker the WWF Championship at SummerSlam 97, The Phenom was determined to get even. Shawn turned heel after SummerSlam, saying that the fans were blaming him and dumping this all on HBK’s lap. This led to the creation of D-Generation X, and this new heel Shawn Michaels would face The Undertaker at Ground Zero: In Your House in September 1997. Due to interference the match was ruled a no contest and a rematch was booked for the next In Your House event. A new match type was created for the bout, a new steel cage that surrounded the whole perimeter of the ringside area and a cage that also had a roof. This cage and match type was named “Hell in a Cell”.
The first Hell in a Cell match would tell the story of Shawn Michaels trying to survive, The Undertaker trying to destroy, and the debut of a Superstar who would go on to become legendary in his own right. This video looks at the build-up to Badd Blood 97, the match itself, and how the whole Hell in a Cell concept came to be.
00:00 - Shawn Michaels' Heel Turn
04:27 - The WWF announces the first Hell in a Cell match
06:08 - HBK vs Taker at Badd Blood '97
16:43 - Why the match was so good
19:53 - Who came up with the Hell in a Cell idea?

People who have only watched WWE for a decade: Wait, what's this long-term storytelling thing? This was a thing once upon a time? :p Great video as always. This was when WWF was in full "WCW may be beating us now, but we're the one with all the momentum."

I never miss an opportunity to put a spotlight on HBK's victory walk after the match, getting dragged up the ramp with HHH raising his arm, looking like he didn't know what planet he was on. Perfect way to show Taker's dominance before Kane showed up, and punctuate the wow factor of this new monster.
I affectionately call this match Hell And The Sell.

Absolutely well noted, there couldn't have been a better ending to it. Shawn was clueless and beaten to a pulp, it was as if he didn't even realize that he had won, let alone care about the victory. He was mentally and physically tormented, and was unable to snap out of the hell that he was put through. Besides, the blading was on point!

Perfect match, even when HBK beat up the cameraman who had been getting I'm his way throughout the match to open the cell door and get him out, great story telling, and it goes from there...

I don't post on all of your videos but i do watch them all. I've said it before and I'll say it again, there are bigger wrestling fans out there than me but I love your videos. Well researched and amazingly told from someone who not only knows what he's speaking about but has a great love for it too. You cover all aspects, behind the scenes and in front of the camera and everything in between with a lot of honesty and respect. Great work.

INSTANT like before the video starts. A video about one of the most exciting times in wresting involving one of the best matches in WWE's history? Fecking fantastic content here, mate. Loved every second of it. You mentioned that its one of yer fave matches, and you can tell that your narration to this one was done with such enthusiasm, energy and interest. Everything about the big lead up to the first Hell in a Cell was amazing stuff, and this superb video is an awesome recap. Thanks for this. 👍

    • @King_Kunta

The psychology was amazing. Shawn was literally just trying to survive. Soon as taker hit the lights and Shawn started to look around and realize he was truly locked in there. Taker walking around slowly was perfect. It was great acting.

Glad you cover a lot of these “IYH” ppv... I’ve always wondered about the backstory on those like the Canadian stampede
,one night only, the DX one where stone cold gave away his truck after the event .. etc .. I think the very first one I saw was taker and michaels... remembering michaels going up the ramp and trying to open the house door on the stage decorations lol ... Most definitely a new sub
