    1997 is considered one of the very best years in WWF history. While the company was slowly moving towards more contemporary content, storylines and rivalries would get presented in a way that also appealed to older fans. The biggest WWF storyline of 1997 concerned Bret Hart and his heel turn.
    Bret Hart felt wrestling fans had turned their back on him in favour of guys like Stone Cold Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels. Hart decided to unite his family and reform the Hart Foundation, a group that consisted of Bret, Owen Hart, The British Bulldog, Jim Neidhart and family friend Brian Pillman. While Bret would rip into fans in the States he would also praise his fans in Europe and Canada, and this created a unique dynamic where Bret and the Hart Foundation would get cheered everywhere except the USA.
    The Hart Foundation came home to Calgary, Alberta, Canada for the WWF’s 16th In Your House event, aptly titled “Canadian Stampede”. At the Canadian Stampede show, The Hart Foundation were treated like heroes by the audience in attendance while their opponents were booed, opponents who would normally get cheered in the States. This created a unique atmosphere in the Calgary Saddledome that the WWE has never been able to recreate. Along with this, In Your House: Canadian Stampede featured some of the very best in-ring action the WWF had produced all year. In the end, the PPV received critical acclaim and it’s considered one of the best pay per views of 1997. The event was headlined by The Hart Foundation vs Ken Shamrock, Goldust, The Legion of Doom and Stone Cold Steve Austin in a 10 Man Tag match. This video covers the entire show.
    00:00 - Wrestling in Calgary

    08:34 - Taka Michinoku vs The Great Sasuke

    I was at that event. The crowd was BANANAS. Words can not describe. Most wrestlers go their entire careers hoping they get as a big a pop as even frigging Jim Neidhart got that night, let alone the crowd's response to Bret Hart. Goosebumps every time I watch that match.

    • @alanguages
      @alanguages 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I was there at that event also. Bret and the Hart Foundation were faces worldwide, it was just the United States, he was considered a heel. That was why fans outside the USA saw how Vince and co. said, Bret was the one in the wrong it made no sense. Bret was telling the truth.
      After the In Your House event, in the parking lot, my brother and I, among others heard yelling. Someone yelled very loud "GET LOST YOU F'N C**T!"
      My brother used his binoculars and it was Hawk, there was about eight fans. They all wore Austin 3: 16 shirts. They had intentionally blocked the vehicle the Road Warriors were in, to prevent them from leaving the premises.
      It looked like Hawk was going to step out, but after that yell others went over there and the Austin fans left.

    I wish Pillman would have made it through the Attitude era. Not only was his life cut short, I feel like he could have reached his peak in the WWF. Imagine some of the angles he could have worked through the early 2000's. Him and Austin could have had a series of matches. It would've been interesting to see what they did with Pillman during The Invasion angle too. What a great heel he was.

    I remember these tapes. My cousin I grew up with who’s a week younger than me collected some much merch and videos on the WWF. He had these tapes and they were some of my favourites. He is passed on now, but these videos always brings me back.

    I have so many hours logged watching this, and i genuinely think you're right, the reaction, will probably never be heard again. It's always stuck with me, and always felt justified, in a way, that owen gets the deciding fall. If only they booked him with the same amount of respect more often, he might have been a multiple time world champion, and maybe even still alive.
    Thankyou, for all your amazing work on every video !

    I really appreciate Reliving the War and I can not wait for 1997. I might rewatch all of 1997 before you start uploading them. A lot of us became fans during the Attitude era and there's something so alluring about the year prior being the bridge between eras.

    Mick Foley had such a deep understanding of what makes pro wrestling work. He's always been good displaying his toughness by overcoming punishment, not just going full Strong Style through your opponents offence.

    The main event may have been the most fun Steve Austin has had in a PPV match. He so obviously relishes in getting to be the nasty heel (again). He was having the time of his life.
    Only thing I didn't like in the main event was the Owen Hart comeback, where he 'saves' Bret Hart. There are three team mates on the apron that just stand around.
