    Great video! Even easier fix (if your fork did not break) is to just pop it out...slide the collar over to engage, and then put the fork back on but put it on the passenger side of the collar....don't slide it on the collar...the default spot of the fork is there and that will hold it into place...this works if the vacuum is working or not...i do this and then seal up the vacuum holes on top...which i always recommend doing too!

    • @Poweraddicts
      @Poweraddicts  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yep, that would work. When I found that fork broke, I headed straight for the hose clamps. Been like that for a long time and will stay like that until I score a good deal on a Dana 44 to swap in. Thanks for dropping in a good tip for others to learn from! Have a great day!!

    I looked at a ton of videos on how to bypass the CAD. What I found to be the easiest is to open the hub where the CAD lives. Remove the assembly as a unit and wipe down. It's as he says, remove the hub straight out so you don't damage the fork. Remove the large circlip that holds the vacuum motor in place and slide the vacuum motor out. Slide two 1/4 in thick nuts on to the VM stem and reinstall. Slide the circlip in place and then you're ready to re-install the hub assembly. Make sure to slide the collar over both axle pieces and slide the fork on to the collar. I used blue gasket maker but you can use whatever to seal it up. Works perfect! This video is excellent to show you how to gain access to the hub assembly and the advice on the small bolts (don't go all he-man on them) is really good advice!! Start to finish this took me about 45 minutes. Good luck!

    • @Poweraddicts
      @Poweraddicts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That works also. But, the fork that slides the collar over had completely broken in two. The clamps were my best option at the time. Thanks for adding a great suggestion!!

  • @dvdguana
    @dvdguana 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just went to this problem in a trail and I came with two options.
    1 my fork was ok the problem was the lines and the vacuum so I remove the security clips on the fork, slide it to the 4x4 position and place the security clip back on, with this the fork won't slide to 4x2 no matter what.
    2. If the fork broke, you can use another ring, soldering the two together in place to make it one large one and you are good to go. With this is you need to remove the axle just to move it a little bit until connects will do the trick.

    The CAD on my '91 only gave me trouble when temps were below freezing. Or when the vacuum lines got ripped off the actuator while driving over logs and stumps...
    Now I have eliminated the entire CAD housing by swapping in a Dana-30 from a '98 XJ that I parted out years ago.

    • @Poweraddicts
      @Poweraddicts  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've thought about doing that. But heck. my current set up has served me well for a couple years now. So, really no need in spending the money for the swap. When I run across a Dana 44 for the right price, then the swap is on! Have a good one!

  • @fishhuntadventure
    @fishhuntadventure ปีที่แล้ว

    8:59 a new diaphragm is like $25. Not to bad to replace it. A new vacuum harness is $65, a new tcase vac switch is $20-$30
    So you can fix that.
    Locking the collar over is in my opinion the other best option to fixing the vac system.

    • @Poweraddicts
      @Poweraddicts  ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct, it can be fixed. It's just not worth it to me. Locking the color or doing the 1pc axle swap is the best option in my opinion as well. Thanks for dropping in!

    So I'm having a vacuum issue. I've decided I'm going with the clamp method, like here... If I slide the collar to the left and put in the clamps, do I have to remove the paddle? I'd prefer to leave it in for whoever gets these axles when I axle swap later this year. So can I leave it in, clamp the collar, and still operate my 4 wheel drive with no issues? Thanks!

    • @Poweraddicts
      @Poweraddicts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fork in mine broke completely in two. You can leave your in as long as its riding in the collar and not hitting the clamps. Your 4x4 is determined by the transfer case. This mod just makes the front axle like a 1 piece shaft.

    Hi chuck nice to see you again, well done! i believe this is the best solution! and if the fork not broken you may put the spacer between the fork and lock body also works great, really i don`t know why jeep made the locker!? some people claims if it always locked it will consume more gas...when you use jeep on road a lot! ... anyway
    i think not much consumption! its 4x4 after all, have a nice day:)

    • @Poweraddicts
      @Poweraddicts  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I did that mod, it took me a bit to get used to it. It felt different with the axle locked in full time on the pavement. Many people flip the CAD which hold the collar in the locked position. With my fork broke, that was no longer an option. Those hose clamps have been in there for a couple of years and they are staying in there until I score an axle upgrade. Probably another one of those government mandated rules to make it more fuel efficient. As you said .. its a Jeep .. fuel milage isn't even in the equation. Good hearing from you again! Have a great day!!

    • @cb-gz1vl

    • @Poweraddicts
      @Poweraddicts  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's really a matter of preference honestly. I've been daily driving mine for at least a couple of years or more locked full time, I've had NO issues. I drive a bit over 70 miles a day round trip to work and back which includes 70+MPH on the highway and town stop and go. It feels weird at first because it "feels" a tiny bit harder to turn on asphalt at very very slow speeds (~5mph or so). AMC/Jeep did that as a way of getting more fuel mileage out of a vehicle with the aerodynamics of a barn door. I can't say that it made any real difference. The CJs were like that all the time. When the TJs came out Chrysler ditched that junk in favor of a full 1 piece axle up front on both sides. When you pull the t-case shifter you are engaging the chain in the t-case to engage the front output drive yoke (thats the simple way of putting it). Long story short .. I locked mine full time, I have no regrets and would do it again. Hope that helps man!! Glad you like the videos!! Have a great day!!

    Hey Chuck or anyone else, I've got a question. On the 2 pieces right front axle(1987 YJ), the outer axle has a seal in there next to the disconnect chamber(I've changed it 3 times) but is there also supposed to have a bearing in there with the seal? Any and all help would be appreciated. No, I really don't want to put a one piece axle in there.

    • @scout2nut

      I know this is an older post but I think the bearing or bushing is on the inner shaft, the outer shaft engages onto a little pilot stub that supports it and keeps it in line with the inner shaft, the end of the outer shaft has a hole drilled in it for the stub to go into.
