Close to despair trying to fit coving around my uneven walls and ceiling - yours is the 1st video I've come across that shows how to get the job done through working to few simple rules and not trying to achieve the impossible when dealing with imperfect old buildings.
In particular, working to a straight line along the bottom and filling in the inevitable gaps at the top, and not even trying to achieve perfect mitre/but joints but using foam/filler after everything is secured has given me confidence to get back up the ladder and face the job again.
Just wish I hadn't already trashed so much material in a fit of rage in the meantime!

This is the only video I’ve found that has tackled this kind of problem, so thanks for taking the time to share this. The haters aren’t even bothering to offer alternatives because in reality there aren’t any unless you are prepared to pull the walls and ceilings down and start from scratch and at large expense, not an option for us!

that's right, you want the least cuts on a wall as possible. The longer the length you can get the better too, nothing worse than when you can only get short lengths and not 3.6 or 4.2

I’ve got to chip in and just say …. When you find the bottom line where the coving is going , put a couple of nails in the wall to rest it on to save you struggling . Also, treat yourself to a mitre triangle specially made for cutting internal/ external joints … perfect mitre every time ! You may be a master of the foam gun and filling knife but you must have put a extra days labour on that job with the amount of filling and sanding you’ll have to do . After seeing that attempt of a internal corner , all I can say is , thank god you’d no chimney breast to go round!!!

    • @PaintingandDecorating

@@PaintingandDecorating it’ll not crack providing the joists above arnt bouncing . That’s something you have no control over no matter how much foam you use ! I’m sat in my living room now looking up at my coving that I put up14 years ago . You couldn’t get the thickness of a credit card in the internal / external joints before the filler got put in…. And guess what , not a crack to be seen .18’x12’ and 3hrs from start to finish . This is why I know you’ve given yourself a lot of unesassary work . Time is money , regardless of how good your filling skills are . I’d have been laughed of the job doing it your way! Genuinely , this is one video you need to delete . It’s just a shame people out there are watching this and think it’s fine🤔

My mate, fabulous stuff, my tip would be use the lighter coving, i know its not gyproc but much easier to use, and much cheaper to buy, also the Gypsum EasiFill 60 is much better to use for filling smaller gaps, rather than foam, though it is a two part process, my opinions obviously, but you are so correct in stating that preparation is everything, keep up the good work .

I think easifill Is fantastic but foam is deffo required for larger gaps or cracking will occur, I’ve tried filling around doors with gaps and they crack, foam prevents any cracking as it absorbs all the movement, my pvc door can now slam in the wind and the edges haven’t cracked, with small gaps and finishing any edges i found the tourpet ready fillers are excellent, it’s fairly pricey but dries and sands quickly and doesn’t slump or crack. Super cove is great so lightweight and easy for a one man job, but what the customer wants the customer gets

OK, had a go at putting the Gyproc up singlehandedly...and regretted it as soon as I lifted the first piece and it bowed. Got it up in place and I bent over for my driver, it came unstuck, fell, I caught one side and the other snapped. Oops.
Nevertheless, I struggled on (mainly because I'm tight and I didn't want to waste the mixed adhesive) and got it done. Never again.
Also had a go with the polystyrene stuff and the biggest problem was getting a clean cut. I used a multitool plunge blade with a wondermitre on the plaster, but a knife on the polystyrene and getting it flat on the right angle was harder. A tube of coving adhesive made it a relatively clean job.
Primer coat done, filling next, then painting the ceilings and mist coating the walls...I think?
(Not sure why I typed all this out - anyway, I referred back to this video while doing it. Thanks again.)
