I walked 6.5 miles to find SHELLS!

  • Many of you have asked how I go about looking for shells... It's a great question, but there isn't one exact answer, haha!
    Sometimes I enjoy snorkeling for shells(as long as it's safe), other times I sit right down in a big old shell pile to see what can be uncovered, but MOST often, I am hiking down the beach, sometimes for miles, to see what treasures I can find!
    Setting out at the first light of dawn, I walk from Hobe Sound south, 6.5 miles to Blowing Rocks Preserve in Jupiter to see what shells can be found along the way!
    Shell ID's will be in a comment pinned to the top of the comment thread!

      You are right, my dear friend. I always try my best to keep both eyes in front so I don't fall while filming, lol
      Nature is amazing - thanks for coming along on this adventure and all of the others!

    Great finds! I love those Imperial Venus clams. For several years, I’ve spent a summer week on Pawley’s Island, SC and have collected ‘Pawley’s shells’ which were supposed to bring luck to those who found them. I probably have about 60 of them and finally learned they are weathered IVC. There are jewelers who sell gold charm Pawley’s shells. It’s quite the thing there. I keep mine in a display vase and add to it each year.

    WOW!! I am super jealous! The East Coast of Florida seems to be quite kind to you and you found some pretty amazing treasures. Granted, you had to walk a bit to find them all. Fabulous video as always!

      I do love shelling on the east coast Florida, when I can get there. This was actually kind of an impromptu plan for me - I was in SE Florida for 2 days around this time last year, and tried to think of an interesting concept to film!
      It's always worth it, when you get to soak up the ocean air - thanks so much for taking the time to watch and comment on, my content, dear Friend!

      Everyone says that all the shells are in SW FL... and they aren't wrong. But! when the shelling is good in SE Florida, it's really good!
      Thanks for watching!

    You really got some great finds! I've only been to SE FL (Hollywood/Dania Beach & about 2 hours at Stuart Beach) a few years ago and love what I found, so different from what I find in the Carolinas. Hope you get a chance to shell in NC sometime (if you already haven't). Shackleford Banks & Cape Lookout, both accessible by boat only (there is a ferry service) can produce some great shelling! I've found a few large whelks, large Giant Atlantic cockle shells, misc. other bivalves, and the occasional Queen Helmet. The helmets are usually faded or discolored, the only one I found is dark grey. Hope you get there if you haven't been yet. I'm really enjoying your videos, definitely a nice winter escape. Thank you for taking the time to share!

      Hi friend, thanks for sharing your anecdotes. I love reading about the ocean related experiences of others - helps to put everything into perspective.
      I briefly made a stop in NC recently on a drive to FL - stay tuned to this channel!

    Awesome finds! Lovely Caribbean vase! The east coast just seems full of lion paws, a very noticeable difference compared to the west coast. Thanks for sharing!

      Hi friend! Oh absolutely, I have found dozens of Lion's Paws shelling on the east coast of FL and not one in SW FL, lol!

    Really really nice shells. And today my wife found an imperial Venus on the west side, but we didn’t know what it was (we just starting looking for shells), so having you identify yours helped us too. Appreciate your videos.

    I watch you all the time from Maine to Florida and more. My daughter loves in FL on the east coast. I am glad you missed the storm. Really enjoy your finds and love the added narrative. I have asked once, but really would like to know some of your Maine shelling spots. I am disabled and trying to find places I could get to is difficult sometimes. I also may be able to visit Florida in the coming year. Thanks for sharing❣🦋❣🐾🐾🐚🐚🌊🌈🌊🐚

      Hello dear friend! I live in New England, and only visit Florida once a year, so I pack in a TON of shelling when I am there, haha!
      In Maine, I have been shelling from Kittery to Lubec, but there's still so many places I have yet to explore. Some of my favorite spots to find "classic" Maine shells are, Biddeford Pool, Old Orchard Beach(in the down season), Crescent Beach State Park, Bailey Island, Boothbay, and Jasper Beach way up in Downeast Maine(when I am looking for some Neptunes 😀)
      Thanks for watching my content, and happy shelling!

    Awesome haul! I love Blowing Rocks! I actually found a Caribbean Vase in August on Kice Island! I was blown away to find one in SW Florida. Going to the East side next week! Thanks for your videos! I've been watching for quite sometime! Didn't know what a Centis Scallop was, thanks!!!

    • @solaceinshelling6552
      @solaceinshelling6552  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Finding a Vase in SW FL is super rare! Fresh water run off from the Everglades pushes out quite a ways in Florida Bay and extreme SW Florida - this makes it pretty difficult for marine species to travel through and sort of acts as a barrier between Keys and SW Florida. I learned it's one of the reasons those beautiful shells from the Keys aren't often found in SW FL!
      Thank you sooo much for watching this content!

    • @jackiecassel8672
      @jackiecassel8672 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes!!! I knew it was a rare find! I found it on Kice Island in the 10000 Islands! It would be awesome if you made video there! It's my favorite place to shell in Florida. Only accessible by boat. Going to the East Coast on Tuesday. Hitting up Blowing Rocks again like you posted on your last video! If you go at low tide and can get around the rocks it is a complete OLIVE GARDEN!!! I can't pick them up fast enough with the rough surf coming in! 🤣 Love your channel! ❤️🐚❤️

    **** I have to pick on u- all in fun!!! It’s hobe like earlobe. Not hobE. **** you need me to tell u how to pronounce east coast cities. Sharmon too… She said Dane-E-ah (I think) for Dania ( Dane ya). I told her the same thing. I love her and she knows it!! Not criticizing just poking fun and advising u. haha.
    Anyway love when anyone is on the east coast!!! The scotch bonnet and shark eye were ginormous!!!! U said u went all the way to the blowing rocks… I have never been there but I thought it was all rocks. No? 6.5 miles is a huge hike!! Wow!!
    Do u post the videos in real time? I only watch a few TH-camrs and I really appreciate “real time” like Oct 2022, Nov 2022 ect. Just an idea of when u were at what location. Just an idea. I know ur fans got u into the post “here’s what I found today” and u started naming them. Love that. Your videos are getting better and better in my opinion u r growing as a TH-camr. Keep that shit up!
    ❤ east coast fl fan.

      Oh wow, a lot to respond to!
      Hobe(like earlobe)...got it! I have only been to Blowing rocks twice, and found decent shells both times. The Blowing Rocks are a geological formation made of limestone deposits that jut out from the beach and catch wave action - very beautiful, and there is also sandy beach!
      I most often do not post videos in real time... I have always tried to make this channel more about the overall experience, rather than the technicality/detail of location specific shell collecting. Because I put a lot of effort into visiting as many places as possible, I plan out a rough "schedule" over the course of the year, for all of the episodes that I film with the intention to keep locations as varied as possible from upload to upload - this episode was filmed 1 year ago in 2021.
      Thank you so much for watching the content, and thank you for the AWESOME questions - shell well, my friend!

      I think they are just sun bleached from sitting up in the wrack line, but not 100% sure. I'll have to dig these back out and take another look!
