one thing i don't know if i heard you bring up is that the specific restrictions around autism are very likely due to the significant overlap within the trans* and autistic communities. and if i just missed it, it's still worth repeating that anti-autistic ableism goes hand in hand with transphobic eugenicist talking points.

Definitely, there is a lot of propaganda trying to claim autism symptoms are mislabeled as trans identities when the evidence does not support that. Autism appears to be more common among nonbinary trans folk and those with fewer sensory issues, which means that it is unlikely to be driving incongruence. More likely, autism and trans identities are a difference in brain wiring that can overlap and autistic people are less inclined to hide idiosyncrasies/quirks in general.

Not to mention plenty of trans people find that transitioning ends up having the most positive impact on their mental health. Banning transition related care for anyone experiencing depression/anxiety (especially under the current political climate) is like telling a diabetic they can't get insulin until their blood sugar is under control. Or telling someone with a broken leg they can't get treatment for it until they're walking around normally, with a smile on their face. It's illogical, reckless, and cruel.

The paradox is the point. You don't have to ban something entirely if you just create a standard for it that is virtually physically impossible to meet. This is the same tactic with voter suppression. They say it's not a big deal to require a government issued photo ID in order to vote but usually you need a birth certificate to get a photo ID but if you don't have a birth certificate you need a photo ID in order to get one. So if you have neither as many people do for a ton of valid reasons, you are essentially instantly disenfranchised.

As a cis person who was on a puberty blocker for adrenal hyperplasia 15 years ago as a teenager, I find the hysteria around puberty blockers being “experimental” to be incredibly pernicious, and nothing more than thinly veiled bigotry against trans people. Kids like me with endocrine disorders have been prescribed puberty blockers for many decades (since the 80s) without any controversy. They’re completely safe and side effects are minimal and rare.

The only difference I can discern is that in my case they were used to prevent potential superficial undesirable effects of precocious puberty, like reduced adult height, whereas for trans kids, they’re used to prevent potentially life threatening and irreversible pubescent changes.
So yes, I am smart enough to understand. In my case it was beneficial but not life saving, and in the case of trans kids, it is both beneficial and life saving.

Medicine for kids freaks people out, the idea of a kid needing medicine beyond Tylenol is literally the stuff of nightmares and they stop thinking clearly. I think the biggots are tapping into that. People freak out about kids with bipolar being given bipolar meds too, conservatives could create or magnify the moral panic around that too if it benefited them 😢
They live in a pollyanna world where kids are innately perfect in their eyes and if a kid is Autistic it is vaccines, ADHD or BP it is trauma or red dye, has cancer it's flouride in the water, is trans it is tiktok... maybe some of us are born different and that's ok? The kid with the genetic predisposition to cancer probably also has some fantastic genes that would have died if not for modern medicine. Darwin was never a eugenicist and his own favorite daughter died because nature is cruel. We are humans we get to accommodate for differences and make the world safe for everyone. .. not leave trans kids exposed to the cruelty of nature like Spartans

@Red Tiger I was prescribed when I was 7 (My mom noticed that I started showing signs of precocious puberty when she bathed me as a child). I remained on the blocker until I was around 13, and then started on hydrocortisone to slow but not completely retard puberty.
That is exactly how blockers are used in trans people, except at an older age. They prevent puberty until the child is old enough to decide if they want to continue with medical transition by way of HRT. HRT will cause the patient to go through puberty.
So you’re completely wrong that they are used to prevent puberty from happening at all. Trans kids on blockers absolutely go through puberty, just as the correct gender.
So there is no problem. You’ll need to choose another topic to feign manufactured hysterical in order to demonize trans people.

I'm not surprised people are framing this as "protecting kids from trans people" or "protecting trans people from themselves" because self defense has always been the language of fascism. The Nazi never said they were attacking Jewish people, but protecting their country from the threat of Jews. It was the same way with the Soviet's and dissidents, the US with Mexican's, and modern Russia with gay people. Genocide is always framed as a means of rational self defense from a supposed enemy that is dead set on destroying you or your country, thus justify any action taken against this enemy with "well they started it."

I'm not autistic but I am a trans guy. The cishet, white, neurotypical, able-bodied, patriarchal view of every marginalized identity is that it is defined by its suffering. Speaking from a trans point of view, every story about a transgender person, fictional or biographical, must be framed by how difficult it is to be trans and conclude with either an inspiration porn narrative of them overcoming the horrors living as a trans person OR their sad but not unexpected demise.
Mainstream media, and most cis people out in the wild, have no idea what to do with the concept of a happy, well-adjusted, joyous trans person. (And I think the same may be true with autistic folks.) The reason why someone like Dylan Mulvaney drives the right nuts is because she's goofy, having fun, and expressing joy... not the narrative they expect or want from a supposedly deeply suffering marginalized person.

But I will point out, I've almost NEVER been informed by doctors about the side effects of nearly every drug I've ever been on. When I was spiraling with mental illness (much of which, in retrospect, might have been a byproduct of living as an undiagnosed autistic girl) or disrupting people with my PMDD, I was quickly given birth control and multiple psychotropic drugs. The side effects were never discussed. I'm grateful to have them--in many ways they saved my life--but those medications can carry severe side effects, but that was never a concern of my physicians, or of a society sick of dealing with my mental symptoms. So why the fuck are they so hung up on the side effects of gender affirming care, which seems to get even more rigorous scientific vetting? It's just the transphobia, plain and simple 😢

Side effects and a chance for regret are kinda part of life. If they want to take that route, they had better enforce that sentiment on plastic surgery, buying a house, and pretty much anything that has any risk to it. It's disingenuous as you said.

Trans guy in Canada who had the privilege of working the a sexual health clinic that works under the informed consent model. When the doctor was going over the "side effects" of testosterone I started laughing. "Facial and body hair growth, voice changes, increased muscle mass, fat redistribution etc etc." Oh, please save me from these "side effects"! There were also ones like increased risk for heart disease... because it's a male associated risk. To the best of my memory not a single side effect was outside of what would be typical for any human with a testosterone based hormone profile.
Admittedly, the situation is a bit different for trans women. Without surgery they also need to take testosterone blockers which do have side-effects and risks specifically associated with those drugs. But all drugs have side effects and risks. And for many trans women the risks are far outweighed by the benefits.

I’m a non-binary person who does drag in Missouri and this is destroying us. Our community is in so much pain, but there is still hope. This reminds me of the era when Prop 8 was passed in California to prevent gay marriage. I know if seems like we are under attack in such a way that the fight will never end, but this is just a rinse and repeat of the same rhetoric that every progressive movement has faced. Once we get enough traction, they start lashing out. But these are the last gasps of a bigoted movement that’s seeing and feels it’s systemic power finally slipping away. They’re doing everything they can to codify it while they have a chance, but just as Prop 8 was struck down, so to shall this attorney general. It wasn’t a law and it wasn’t even an executive order - the guy had to literally declare Missouri to be in an official “state of emergency” over trans people. He cannot keep us in that false state of emergency forever, and will eventually have to defend it in court successfully (something he wouldn’t be able to do) or end the policy. And it can also likely be ruled unconstitutional in court. We Will Win. It’s just a matter of time. But some people don’t have much time, which is why we have to be loud and make that time come as soon as possible.

Also, advanced biology and professionals in those fields who understand more than I do show how such a strict binary isn't the whole picture. I’m so sorry you’re being put in that situation. It’s awful. I’m non-binary, maybe autistic (I haven’t sought a diagnosis), in my 20s, and living in Texas, so I’m seeing the horror of what’s happening in so many red states, but I know young people/minors are being affected the most. I do remember when I was in high school, the mayor of Houston was trying to get the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance passed (it was turned into a referendum so the public was going to vote on it), and all of these awful ads started popping up on TV about “the dangers of letting men in women’s restrooms.” Paid for by Christian organizations that weren’t even based in Houston. The Equal Rights Ordinance, which would’ve protected people from discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender in housing and employment, was voted down by the public after an insane amount of fear-mongering over one line of the ordinance that mentioned not prohibiting people from using the restrooms that align with their gender.
I bring this up because when you’re young and you see all this hate that’s targeting people like you, and you see policies that would help you being struck down and policies that actively harm you going into effect, it can be hard not to feel hopeless and powerless. But what I’ve learned since then is that we aren’t. We are part of an incredible community of people who are in and of themselves, in and of ourselves, powerful. I would highly recommend seeking out organizations that can help you access care, such as the Human Rights Campaign or the National Center for Transgender Equality. There are so many people out there right now not only advocating on our behalf (and often on their own behalf), but getting things done, and taking it upon themselves to gather and share resources. Just know that you aren’t alone, even as these incredibly dark things are happening and you’re being affected so cruelly. There are a lot of people in your corner, and I hope you’ve already got some in your life, and if not, that you connect with some. You deserve care and support.

Thank you so much for making this, I live in Texas and things have been scary here for a long time and are getting scarier. And what’s happening in Missouri is even worse. This tactic of weaponizing ableism to promote transphobia and delegitimize trans identities has really started to proliferate in scary ways. For decades the transphobic thought was “‘feeling trans’ is in and of itself a mental disorder, for which the only treatment is conversion therapy.” Growing now is the idea that “‘feeling trans’ is linked to other distinct mental disorders, such as autism, and thus being autistic makes you vulnerable to ‘gender ideology.’” And the reality is autism and being trans are highly correlated, and we don’t know exactly why. But what we need to make exceedingly clear is that a lot of autistic people being trans doesn’t mean a lot of autistic people are “confused” or “wrong about their identity,” a lot of autistic people just are trans. We understand that about ourselves, and become more comfortable in ourselves when we are able to self-identify and when others respect our identities and who we are. No person who is experiencing gender dysphoria or who believes they may be trans or who knows they are trans will be helped by others trying to take control of their own choices, their own identities, their own bodies. I haven’t sought a diagnosis but I believe I am autistic myself, and I know there’s a disconnect for a lot of us between how we know ourselves to be and how others perceive us. People don’t understand the way we think, why we act the way we do, why we speak the way we do. Neurotypical people especially just often don’t get us. The very least people can do is respect us, and listen to us when we tell them who we are, how our minds work, how our identities work. We generally know ourselves pretty well, and we are all students of how other people (neurotypical people) are, who they are, how they behave, how they think. Often the rest of the world doesn’t understand us, doesn’t understand autistic people, and would rather try to control us than listen to us.

I'm an autistic individual myself and while I can't really speak for all autistic people, the reason with being in the LGBTQ+ community could possibly be linked to autism is because many autistic people are extremely emotionally intelligent. Even in the more severe cases, a lot of those individuals have a very keen sense of empathy and can sense human emotion. (The barrier between autistic people and showing empathy to neurotypicals is the fact that neurotypicals don't like/understand how autistic people show empathy.)
Being emotionally in tune with yourself and the people around you can essentially allow you to accept things about yourself that other people who aren't as emotionally intelligent/in tune with themselves can't. In society it's very ingrained that being gay/trans is wrong yet most people who truely ask themselves as to why can't really come up with an actually good reason as to why that stigma is well-deserved. (And no, your niche religion doesn't count.) And I think that's why the two groups correlate; if you're more emotionally intelligent and open to yourself and who you are as a person, you'll naturally accept yourself. Extra points if society doesn't accept you for being autistic. Why follow societal expectations if you were already damned to being categorized in a negative light and being persecuted for something you were just born with?

It hurts that even where I live, in a very progressive area, that ableism is still blatantly everywhere. The label “autism” is often used to describe anyone in place of the word stupid. A classmate having trouble with a math problem, for example, got sarcastically told “i dunno, maybe you’re just autistic.” in broad daylight. A friend who’s bored and messing with sticks, tapping on a metal pole - “bro, you look f-- autistic.”
This is in an area where being trans or gay is beyond completely accepted, beyond tolerated - I’d say exceptionally so. In this same area, I tired calling someone out for using the R slur, “hey, don’t say that. That’s a slur.” “I know, that’s why I’m using it.”
It’s painful, because despite how far support for trans and gay people has come, support for (especially neurologically) disabled people has barely started to bud. Even on broader online spaces.

Yeah, on the face of it "caring for the children" sounds noble. Though it all depends on how that care gets administered and doled out. Definitely check in on your trans friends. As a side note to that, they are friends who happen to be trans. If they want to talk about their experiences of being trans, cool. I've gone too far at times with my own friends, which came across as tokenizing to them because I was mostly curious about their unique experience. They had to remind me that they aren't there for me to mine for information and treat like some endangered species. I am on T now, but the amount of anti Autistic ableism I've either faced or heard during my process to start medically transitioning is awful. It's one of the many ways in which Autistic people are infantilised, and treated as if we are unable to make any informed decisions for ourselves.
Some of the things I've been told by medical/mental health "professionals":
    - "you know yourself very well ... for someone with autism" ~my gender therapist
    - "transitioning should be a lot easier, except for people with autism" ~my endocrinologist
    - "are you sure your autism diagnosis is still accurate? You don't look autistic." ~my psychiatrist
And that's not to mention the fact that they thought I didn't struggle a lot, after my first appointment, BECAUSE I WAS HEAVILY MASKING and also, struggling with expressing emotion is a very common Autistic trait ..
But luckily I was still able to access medical transition, which, I honestly don't know how much longer I could've gone without it. I don't think I would've been able to cope if I had been told I would never be allowed to access the care that I need.
Btw I would not be surprised at all if they focused so much on Autistic people *because* of the fact that many of us are trans, which is something that studies are increasingly shedding a light on. I don't see any of them focusing on ADHD, or other neurodivergencies.

If you are an adult or trying to access an evaluation for autism through your health provider, it's difficult. If you are in K12, you just have to ask the school. In my state (PA) they have a limited time to do the test. Even if you have to give a justification for the test you will automatically qualify if you have gender dysphoria, BECAUSE one of the characteristics of autism that most people don't know about is you have trouble distinguishing gender. It's usually the last ditch effort before they decide it's time to transition, whether that be socially, medically or both.
The idea of "it's not that bad", whole being comparably true to other places, doesn't really matter. Things can always be better. Progress is always a thing in the works that never really ends.

The worst thing about this for me is that I think they know the bill won't last. They know it doesn't make sense, but to them, any amount of time preventing trans people from accessing care is a "win". So they're going to keep stalling and spewing this bullshit.
The way these people talk about trans kids behind closed doors is frankly disgusting.
It really sucks that it has to be this way, but to anyone affected by these laws, there are ways to self-medicate, and plenty of resources telling you how online.

I worry about another reason they don't care if their actions may have consequences later on... IF a liberal politician ends up in a position to hold them to account.
On Jan 6th 2021, several current and former military members attempted to help with the coup. There were 3 generals that came forward and warned of a possible attempt to subvert the election. I can't know if they were able to correct the issue or not, but the GOP seems to have stopped caring what anyone but THEIR loyal base thinks since the 2022 elections, for sure.
We could seriously be check mate. Right now. Prepare to hide if you can't safely and legally leave the country, or find a safe place within. Please, be safe and don't hesitate if you see it coming.

Great video - my first time here, but definitely not my last. I wasn't aware of the autism provision. Georgia has done something similar. I wonder if an argument can be made that denying someone treatment based solely on autism is a violation of the ADA. Seems to me that's a valid question. Thanks for your thoughtful content!

Such a well presented and informative piece of work, thank you very much. Your honesty and sincerity are deeply humbling. Trans rights are human rights, and no one human can define and actively restrict the humanity of another. All this BS by nut jobs across the developed world is getting way out of hand it is dangerous and it is frighteneing. Your approach of fact and reason and willingness to give people time to adjust and understan is kind and impressive. I did that as a young gay man in the late 80s and early 90s, it was and remains the right approach. But, we are also allowed and must draw our lines. They are drawn and they cannot and must not be crossed. Thank you, feeling very inspired today.

I have far too many trans friends that I love and care about to sit idly while Ron DeSantis writes bill after bill after bill invalidating their existence (and mine. I'm cis, but I'm also black, and DeSantis is making some pretty racist bills as well. God help my black trans friends!)

I’m in Indiana without much a chance to leave Indiana given I’m not doing well enough in college (online) and jobs here will never pay me anywhere close to the money I need to move. I feel like trans people were already severely curtailed in Indiana well before lawmakers even thought about SB480. Where I live, there are very few trans people and no real trans community. There is also a militant cishetereo-normativity here and as a result, I couldn’t have my queer awakening until I was 21 since I would have been bullied if I had it at 13 or 15. I have missed out on so much in life because I am autistic and queer in the most hostile state for people like me outside of the south. The legislative attacks that started after 2010 and escalated this year have greatly exacerbated the isolation and hate trans people face in Indiana’s borders. Im scared that I will have my HRT access banned in the next year, either by a regular legislative session, the AG, or if the governor decides to call a special session in order to “deal with the problem”. As a result, I am isolated here and I don’t have much hope of un-isolating myself until I leave Indiana.
I’m on E now, but that is only half the battle for me. The other half is finding a physical community where I could be loved. And I unfortunately don’t think I will ever find it in Indiana. Most people who I would feel welcome around ditch this state when they are 18 and never come back. I hope I can finally join them in the next year, but will likely need to start a go fund me in order to have the chance to move given that moving to a place I feel welcome likely costs over $10,000. $10,000 I don’t have, especially since I have $35,000 in student debt that I will also need to move to pay off if I live on my own.

So to hit this on the head of what this person just said. I'm 25 years old, transgender, and unable to get the care I need to live.
I can't afford medical insurance, but also cannot get a job, mainly because I am suffering from intense dysphoria on the daily, I take showers in the dark and use the facilities in my house in the dark because I become intensely dysphoric and pretty much sick to my stomach at the sight of myself and fall into a very horrible state of depression.
That said I also have clinically diagnosed Moderate-to-Severe Depression, a major anxiety disorder, a stress disorder, plus I live with a highly-conservative family so that doesn't help either.
    Not exactly prime employee stuff.
I'm not be able to access transitional care as a MTF Transgender person in my State, until, I resolve my Depression and Anxiety disorders, and I can't resolve those until I can afford to pay for the health insurance that will help cover those psychiatric things. But I can't get and hold a job with my problems such as the depression, anxiety and crippling dysphoria. SO this is not just targeted at Transgender teens or young adults
I'm 25 years old, and I still haven't been able to live my life the way I want it to be lived. I've been in and out of the hospital over the past few years, twice from suicide attempts. I am not hopeful of living past my 30th birthday. This country is completely failing so many people like me, in similar situations to me, or even worse situations.

I am a non-binary person on the autism spectrum in my 50's. I am also an American. So this affects me directly. As we now know, those of us on the spectrum are 11 times more likely to be gender non conforming. The rules to receive care are discriminatory from the get go.
I have always been the way I am, even when I lacked the words for my experience. I now can be myself. That means if l can taste words and letters have colors, it's not a disorder, it's a difference. Same with my sexual orientation and gender identity. I am not broken . I am blessed.

Thank you for this video. I am a cis female trying to do everything I can to be better educated on this so I can help fight this misinformation. I do not know what it is to be trans, but I know what it is to not be straight, neurotypical, and some other major human traits. And I will never stand for cis people making trans laws. Nor should straight people make laws for gay people; they should sit down, shut up, and listen. Men should not have the sole authority to make laws for women, or vice versa. Or white people the laws of POC. That will never make sense. And the fact that they are now making autism a marker for confused or naive people who cannot make their own decisions pisses me off. Sure, a nonverbal autistic with a very low IQ cannot make very many decisions. But that is a specific type of autism. As a whole, the diagnosis does not take away our autonomy, and so it shouldn't. I am also depressed, anxious, and possibly bipolar, but none of these things preclude me from deciding my own life. This is outrageous.

Thank you for this. We've been fighting the legislation in my state, but the session is over, and the bills have been passed. We're continuing to fight against local actions (attempts to ban books at the county libraries and the like), sometimes successfully.
I'd like to implore US folks to watch what happens at the local level as well, because we've seen moves targeted at erasing visibility here as well as just a lot of general nastiness.
Being the mother of someone who's autistic, I'm really disgusted by the ableism in their messaging about autistic people. Autistic people should be trusted when they tell you about themselves and their experiences!

So many good points, thank you. I am horrified by all of this and have been fighting / debating people over this since the first "bathroom bills" crawled into existence years back. Yes I have worked with and known quite a few trans folks, old ravehead in the 90's, but also just co workers, people I met around, friends, etc.) You gave me a few more excellent retorts, although sadly it got so disgustingly bad with my family I just had to cut them off recently (after 30 years of trying). I'm 46, cis straight female, no children (just for reference). Fighting. It's for ALL our rights, damn these bastards.

consecutive years is also important. im a tguy who came out 7 years ago when i was 11. i have experienced severe bullying and s/xual abuse related to my identity, so yeah, i'd have a month every few years where i would try and fix myself and become cis. i was still trans, i was just physically and emotionally unsafe being it, and i thought i could avoid the pain by sacrificing my identity. if someone looked at those few instances and decided it was proof i didn't have "consecutive" years of gender dysphoria, and decided to deny my access to healthcare... ugh

I sincerely appreciate this video and have shared it on Facebook and will be sharing it in Twitter and other social media as well.
At the current time, there are maybe three "safe" states left for people to go to. I'm a 50 year old transman. My dad is 85 years old. I came home because I wanted to be closer to my family.
For financial reasons, I have had periods where I could not get treatment and had to suffer through it. It's not easy but IT CAN BE DONE. So I'd urge you NOT to run. I'd urge you to dig your heels in and fight right here at home because... IF YOU RUN, THE BIGOTS WIN.
Again, I'm 50 years old, and I'm disabled. I refuse to believe that my best years are behind me. This is my country too,and I'll be damned if I'm gonna sit back quietly and let these SOBs take it from us! I've lived my life openly and authentically so Gen Y, Millenials, Gen Z, and others could see me and hopefully live with less fear, so they know they aren't alone.
And thus, I feel enormous pity for those right winger(s) who brings violence and hate upon me and my family for the lack of choices they'll leave us with and what they may force us to do. I know I'm not alone in thinking this. I fully believe with all my heart that living freely is worth dying for.
