    I worked for a machine shop many years ago and did a lot of port and polishing cylinder heads but one time a set of 69 429 cobra jet heads came to me they had cobra jet cast into the heads. I finished porting out the intake ports beautifully " At that time I was using a hand held die grinder" as C N C was just some bodys dream. I started grinding in the exhaust ports as any ford guy knows the exhaust ports are quite small I tried to enlarge the ports and ended up into the water jacket. My boss was furious. At that time those heads were very scarce. I ended up in some junkyard in duanesburg N.Y I've never been there in my life. I started praying for a miracle, and relieved that miracle when I found a set of 429 4bbl heads in a scrap pile. Miracles do happen. I ended up porting the " new heads on my own time and was careful in the exhaust ports. A lesson that I Learned the hard way. It still amazes me that I found replacement heads. Truthfully an answer to prayer.

As a typical 1970's block, it didn't always have the nickel content of earlier blocks, but a 400 cid Cleveland, geez that should send mice running. I just came across this now, so keep that in mind lol. I'm a Ford guy all the way, just preference lol. Instead of the 460cid, I built a 429cid, the reason being just faster spool up of the rotating assembly. My built is really close to the last parts you guys used, the motor was balanced and blueprinted, crower custom grind camshaft, ported and polished heads, msd distributor with a Jacob's ignition. I did this built 2002, still run it in my 72 Mustang Grande with zero issues. The car was different story, welded subframe connectors and adjustable Monty Carlo bar set under the hood. 4:11 gears with a mildly built C6. It's a reliable fun car. I still like the idea of the 429cid, I think people overlook this motor altogether.

      I grew up around FE series Fords. Dad had a ‘67 pickup with a 352 and a ‘66 wagon with a 390 that proved to be very durable engines. Although they did have the performance of a small block Chevys of the same era, the FE big blocks were much better suited and lasted much longer in a truck application. The only 385 series engine that I had any dealing with belonged to a friend in high school. He had a ‘69 Thunderbird with a 429. That was an awesome engine!

      I have a 1970 460 in my 73 Continental. The 10.5 compression ratio (over the stock 8.5 compression from the 1973 engine that was smogged down) the factory engine would run about 76 mph in the quarter consistently (never went to the track to get a time slip just a quite industrial street where my buddies and me measured a quarter mile), just swapping to the 1970 engine and setting the timing by ear the car would pull 88 MPH... Pretty quick for a 5500lb car that rides like a sofa. Then I did dual 2.5 exhuast with a cross over and it went to 90MPH, swapped to an edelbrock 1411 carb over the FoMoCo carb and got 92 mph then my buddy tuned the carb on his dyno and I got about 94 MPH, next was a simple pertronix and that gave me another 1 mile per hour. Now I am going to go to the next level without rebuilding it (hence why I watched the video) and that will be a cam swap and a port match head job to match the gaskets on the stock intake and head and I am thinking traction might start becoming a problem so far it hasn't been on a good surface from all the weight transfer but the hubcaped 235 thin white wall tires I would imagine are getting close to turning into asphalt crayons lol... So I think a factory limited slip with 3.23 gears might also be in the near future over the 2.73 open diff that's in it now.
      The worst thing about the car is in the 21 years I have owned it I drive the hell out of it here in so Cal, it really is a nice driving boat of a car that stops well (for the era of car) and is comfortable for road trips to vegas or the beach) it gets 10.5 MPG now and from the factory it was about 12mpg and now it runs on premium where it used to run on regular. Oh and it wants to run warm now in traffic and that's with the AC off so I was also thinking of hiding a pusher fan that is thermostaticly controlled but I would imagine that when the cam wakes it up a bit it will even be worse for heat. That car's engine compartment looks huge but that 460 takes almost every inch of it with all the accessories bolted to it and vacuum canisters on the fender Wells.

      @jimbojimson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm very familiar with the 429/460 and the stock numbers didn't surprise me, but the fact that MPG managed to get 600 hp out of a set of iron heads on a flat tappet cam 😮 That's incredible. The exhaust ports on big block Fords absolutely suck from the factory compared to the intake side, so I'm surprised it could pull it off. That being said I would love to see what a set of AFR heads would do on this engine with no other changes!

    Richard: Thanks for the thorough and thoughtful analysis of the ignored performance engines. Love your 500CAD stuff too!
    I'd like to see how far a stock BBF bottom end will go before it grenades. I've spent a lot of time and money over the years on parts that really didn't make much of a difference- in durability and in power. In my mind cheap power is king. Anybody can throw $25K at a motor and make power, but what about all us regular guys who have about 5 or 6 grand to spend (which takes most of us a year or more to scrounge up!) ?
    I'd also like a thoughtful comparative analysis on FE vs. 385 series Ford BBs. I have a soft place in my heart for the FE since FoMoCo stomped Enzo's ass with them and made Americans so proud of our Detroit iron. Sadly there is very little info out there on how to turn a plain jane FE into a killer.
    Thanks again for the hard work!

    The 429-460 Fords are So Underrated, can easily make over 1000 HP N/A and have Super Strong Bottom Ends. I built my 521 Stroked BBF about 10 Years Ago. Going Low to Mid Nines on 275/60 Drag Radials, N/A through a 1000cfm Holley 4150, Nice Solid Roller, Out of the Box Trickflow Street/Strip Heads, Scat Forged Rotating Assy. 4.30" Stroke, H-Beam Rods, C-4 Auto No Brake, 8.8 with 3.90 Gears, Very Streetable, 10.4:1 Compression. The 460 wasn't produced as a High Performance Engine, was put in Heavy Lincoln's and Trucks. These Engines have So Much Potential. Can easily Compete with any Big Block Chevy. Can make Over 1000 hp N/A with a Nice Stroker Kit and Good Heads like Trickflow A460 or Kaase SR-71 Heads. I ran Clevelands for years in my 86 Mustang, about 10 Years Ago is when i built the Stroked 460. My Favorite Engines are the 351 Cleveland, and the 429-460 Ford. I also have alot of respect for the Buick 455 Stage 1, aka The Hemi Killer ! The Only GM engine i would own.

    After 40 years of enjoying both Chevy and Ford BB/SB offerings I can honestly say that back in the day it cost nearly twice as much to get those performance Ford parts but they ALWAYS produced a little more than the GM. Now that there are plenty of parts for the 8.2/9.5 drck SBF with 4 bolt mains I love screwing around with Fox body mustangs but dad was a BBF nut and SBC diehard, he and his pals were getting just under 600hp out of 429/460 engines back in the 80s. They were building jet boat engines with single carb/solid cam setups that just killed the BBC. Now the parts are much more available, roller rockers, better pistons, fuel delivery 600hp is the standard. Still love my GM stuff and the combos are proven. Very fun. I am currently doing a late model 460, heads and turbo on the way without ridiculous cam that cost me low end.

    I have a buddy running a "460" in a fox-body. It is more like 540 cubes or more. It makes tons of power pushing the car to 5.6's in the eighth starting on foot-brake. This is pretty good platform from everything I'm seeing. I heard they have heads that incorporate BBC header bolt pattern and spacing. Great video as always.
