Loved this movie! Well done Antonio Campos and crew. Having read the book, I was quite skeptical going into the movie b/c rarely can a 2 hr movie live up to the storytelling in a good book. But this movie is actually even better than the book. The acting of all the actors in the movie is incredible right down to the little boy who plays young Arvin (who’s performance reminds me of the impressive job a young Tom Holland did in the Impossible). However, I think what I like the most about the movie is how well it brings out the nuanced parallels between the various characters and storylines in the book, particularly Arvin and his father which I sort of picked up on in the book but is highlighted in a really neat way in the movie. From big scenes like the two fight scenes of Willard and later Arvin to the scenes of Willard and later Arvin staring at the framed crucifix on the wall to small things like each of them riding in the back of a work truck, the parallels are really interesting to watch. I also like the similarity between the way Robert Pattinson’s character looks over his shoulder when Tom Holland is coming to kill him and the way that Tom Holland’s character looks over his shoulder when he hears Sebastian Stan’s character coming. These are just a small few of the ways in which the various parallels and themes of misplaced religion, war, inherited sins of the father and characters who seem to fight the devil all of the time and the affect that their decisions have on those around them are woven throughout the movie. So so good! Highly recommended!
I really didn't know what to expect from this movie when I pressed play besides this insane cast. It was a great surprise, I was hooked from beginning til end and can't wait to read the book now
Such an incredible film. I never read the book but I'll have to go back and give it a read. It was hard to find things in this movie that didn't feel intentional.
