  • The Viltrox EF-M2 is still making waves through the filmmaking community with its performance and extreme shortage around the world. With cheaper alternatives comes many questions that are not well documented.
    This week’s Q&A is dedicated solely to the Viltrox EF-M2, GH5, and Sigma 18-35 combo, and how well it’s performed for me in the past 3 months on a corporate shoot and a feature film set.

    If you're still not able to get infinity focus no matter how much you turn clockwise, this is what you have to do: Unscrew the Viltrox lens all the way until it comes out of the body. On the inside of the body, on the lip on the sensor-side, you will see a buildup of a glue-like substance. Scrape all of this off and then put the lens back into the body and rotate clockwise until you can't rotate it anymore. This is what worked for me.

      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      I'm so glad you enjoyed the format of this channel! The Viltrox EF-M2 and M1 have served me well with my two zoom lens cine-setup (Sigma 18-35 and Sigma 50-150) Used them for videos as well as some non-action photography. Viltrox has also kept up with their firmware updates too! I just wished they listened to my suggestion of making a XL booster version at .64x like the metabones, if they did that at a $250 price mark....man, I would be a happy camper!

      Greetings Bemnet!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and asking a question!
      By "other one" do you mean the Commlite booster that I reviewed later? If so, the difference is that they are made by different companies with slightly different optical quality. Overall I prefer the Viltrox optics, but I have shot photos with the Commlite and have been happy with the results.
      In terms of what those Red and White dots are, those a simply the mounting position holes for EF Full Frame Lenses (Red Dot) and EF-S crop lenses (White dot). However Canon EF-S mount lenses won't really work on this adapter because of the optics. My guess is the white dot is there from their non-optic EF-M1 adapter.
      Hope this makes sense! Thanks again for stopping by, hope to see you in the next one!

      Greetings Dlavar!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video, the kind words, and commenting!
      In terms of the AF performance of the GH5 with the viltrox. If you are in Photo mode and using it for photography, it's actually not terrible depending on which lens you pair up with the Viltrox. Sigma's have generally been fine, Canon's you'll want to check their compatibility list. Tamrons I wouldnt try on these adapters because their EF protocol is wonky, and I think Tokina's have been fine.
      However if you are wanting to use AF for video, it will not work as smoothly as you'd like because the adapter is taking a different type of of lens language and translating it to the GH5.
      For me this adapter is really only serving two purposes: Aperture control and Focal Length information so that the GH5 knows how to adjust its IBIS feature. A lot of what I do require manual focus by the camera operator so I don't really count on the AF. If Continuous AF for video is of importance in your line of work, it seems the Pana-Leica 12-60mm has done well overall, but in general you will want to go with a native Panasonic MFT lens over the adapter route.
      Hope this helps! I truly love this combo with the Sigma 18-35 for my narrative film work. Very rarely do I switch over to my Sigma 50-150mm (only for specialized shots)
      Thanks again for stopping by and I hope to see you again in the next one every Wednesdays (minus holiday weeks)!

    picked on up on ebay new, $120. Works well with my g7 and tamron 17-50mm f2.8. Used it yesterday at a wedding! I think the images I get from this combo is as good or better than with native panasonic 12-35mm f2.8

      Hey Jorge!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting!
      Thats awesome! and an amazing price too! I have a two quick questions,
      - Is your Tamron 17-50mm the one with O.S.?
      - does your aperture adjustment still work with your Tamron 17-50? The reason I ask was when I first had that lens with the gen 1 Metabones and GH4. The Aperture worked on the first power up, and after I shut it down it burned out the aperture motor and it no longer worked. I loved that lens and hated to give it up, but if you're having no problems...I think I need to re-add that into my collection!
      Thank you so much for stopping by and for your time! Check back every Wednesday for something new!

    • @jorgem50
      @jorgem50 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Funny you talk about your issue with your gen 1 metabone. I had a similar experience two years ago with a cheapo chinese adapter that promised aperture control. Hooked it up to my Tamron with OS and next thing I know when I turned on the camera the aperture was going crazy. Turned off the camera and removed adapter. Long story short, my Tamron is stuck at f2.8 and unfortunately I cannot control aperture with the Viltrox. I just purchased a Sigma 17-50 with OS and I'm hoping to get control of the aperture.
      Enjoy your channel btw!

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's something that inherently weird with the Tamron lenses, they are all over the place in terms of compatibility with adapters, but Sigma's on the other hand, whether its tested or not, all seem to work just fine with adapters. It's weird.

    I just got one of these for my Panasonic G7 and primarily shoot 1080p. Im looking for a good all-around Canon lens to pair this with. FF not APS-C right? What lens would you recommend? A-roll + B-Roll. On our channel we do computer builds, vlogs, product reviews, tech content, etc. Thanks in advance.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Coalition Gaming!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and asking a question!
      If you are buying Canon branded lenses, yes, FF only. The Canon APS-C lenses have a extra extension behind the lens that makes it hard to work with these adapters.
      However any "Third Party" canon mount lenses (Sigma, Tokina, etc) will not have this problem, they will use a traditional FF Canon EF mount and all will work fine.
      I may sound like a broken record, but the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 is probably your best bet in terms of an all around lens with this adapter. The only thing that may not work well is V-logs, depending on how you film. If you're looking for something like Casey Neistat where you walk around holding the camera in front of you with Continuous AF, this would not be the right set up, you'll probably want a native MFT lens for those situation. For everything else, this lens gives you flexibility of focal ranges and nice out of focus background when you need it.
      Hope this helps!

    Thanks for the vid :) A 5th of the Metabones price with similar performance. Other than there still not being a 0.64 version from Viltrox...Metabones can go do one. They're just too greedy. The monopoly is at an end...which is great for consumers :)

      It would be pretty sweet if Viltrox came out with a 0.64x XL version like the Metabones, but that may soon no longer be a thing with the announcement of the Panasonic Full Frame Camera line-up thats coming sometime in 2019.
      I did a video about my ideas on what features they may have, and if the crop modes are in their Full Frame Cameras, good by speedboosted adapters and hello full native lens performance!

      Hey hey again!
      Thank you so much for checking out another one of my videos!
      What happened with your Metabones?! They stopped responding to me as well when I bought their first MFT Metabones and it fried two of my Tamron lenses, they just said they couldn't do anything about it and then eventually stopped responding to me asking for a refund. This was about 4 years ago, needless to say I never want to buy any of their products after that encounter and losing two lenses.
      I'll admit they are more on top of things than other adapter companies with super fast firmware updates, but if Viltrox continues the way they have been with developing firmwares, listening to customers, and at this price point. Metabones is in trouble...at least to the MFT crowd.

    • @clintcompose
      @clintcompose 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The first time I saw your review I was sold on this smaller company. I agree with everything you're saying, they will def give metabones a run for their money.
      I emailed them and explained that just the pins of my connector broke. It was still usable, but it did not connect to the camera electronically. So I emailed them to see what my options were to fix it. The main thing I love about this lens is the X71 crop but especially the fact I can stop down as well, I shoot more manual most of the time.
      But, they got back to me with where to send it and the amount I needed to PayPal them in order for me to receive it back after it was fixed. I did all that and I never heard from them again. I email them every week because it makes no sense. If it's not fixable just let me know.
      Oh well. I just paud $118 for this Veltrox and at that price i will definately be happy.

      Oh man thats is not good, sorry that you had to deal with it. I hope the Viltrox does everything you need it to! If you have trouble with Infinity Focus, there is a pinned comment from another user that offered a 2nd solution that seems to be working for everyone that can't turn the optics far enough to reach infinity for their lenses. Definitely stop back and let us know how well the Viltrox works for you!

    Hello everyone!
    I have a common issue with my viltrox EF-M2 on my GH5: it says "lens attachment failed" when I try to use a Samyang 85mm Cine lens with it. I tried to tape the golden pins on the viltrox and also tried on the lens directly, but in both cases I managed to make it work for a few seconds no more, most of the time I get a black screen. I'm guessing I'm not taping it right, or something like that. Anyway I'm trying to work around that issue as I'd like to purchase a 85mm samyang. If you had a similar problem with the viltrox and you could fix it, your help will be much appreciated!

      Hey Jourdan!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question.
      That is odd that even with the tape over the contracts that you are still getting that error. If you have a plain dummy adapter, do you get the lens error too?
      I'm wondering that and if the newest Panasonic firmware has messed up adapters again. I'm personally still on old old firmware (right when they introduced 400mpbs) because I don't want to fix whats not broken.
      Let the community here know your setup and firmwares and lets see if we have some more answers! Hope this helps!

    I have to comment.
    I too have the ef-m2 mark 2 from viltrox and a panasonic camera.
    Yes. That tiny screw at the back of the speedbooster is a screw to hold the lens element from nor moving.
    No you dont just turn the elements all the way clockwise from the front.
    You need to mark the back for reference and start adjusting that element counter/clockwise from the back until your lens hits perfect focus, on the widest apperture, 7-8 meters away with a big enough target say a christmass tree, picked a point using the crosshair focus area and using MANUAL mode on the lens/camera.
    Once you hit perfect infinity line focus then your viltrox is perfectly calibrated.
    Talk about doong calibration with a sigma art lens then tou would know how difficult thats going to be.

      The newer models may be slightly different, the first generation had a stopping point that got it to infinity. Definitely recalibrating the lens itself is a crazy process and generally not necessary, just messing with the booster element is enough.

    I used it with my gh3 and a canon EF 50mm.
    The viltox is always focus hunting and it is slow to focus.

      Hey hey nublackmusic!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      Do you mean autofocus for video or photo? If it's video, it is no fault of the Viltrox but rather with how the Panasonic's focusing type works. It is further worsened by using lenses that are adapted and not native. For me, I use this adapter only for lens electronic communication, so that the IBIS is automatically set, and to adjust the aperture blades.
      For photos, the Autofocus really depends on why lens you use with the adapter. Only certain lenses that they've written firmware for will perform adequately. For me, they've never calibrated a firmware for the Canon 50mm Mk1 (non-STM), and that lens will never find focus no matter what, whereas my Sigma 18-35mm is able to for photos. The Sigma isn't listed, but something about Sigma lenses seems to operate similarly to Canon L series lenses, so the Autofocus have works just fine for photos.
      Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by and I’ll see you in the next one!

      Hello Blue Road Media!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      I have both the Commlite and Viltrox, the optics are pretty similar but I would still go with the Viltrox over the Commlite because it seems just a hair sharper does a does better when you shoot against a large light source (Which I tend to do a bit with my DP style)
      I hope you get it quickly too, that's not a bad price at all for the EF-M2. Have fun with it and of course create something awesome with it!

      I have the Commlite coupled with Sigma and Tamron lenses to my GH5 and G85. The Commlite was working just fine for a few months then it started to lock up both cameras and I have to loosen the lens then re-attach the lens to get it to unlock itself, it does this on both cameras and always at the wrong time. I shoot a lot of event photography with this set up. For video on these cameras I use a non electronic focal reducer adapter for my Rokinon Cine DS lenses that never fails me not ever.

      Hey hey der Ryk1!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and adding you experiences in the comments! That is odd that it was working fine and then would act weird at the wrong times...I wonder, do you recall which batteries you were using in your cameras when the camera would lock up for a second? (Specifically if you use 3rd party batteries)
      Assuming the adapter is not loose and powers on just fine, I wonder if certain 3rd party batteries causes this to happen?
      Another one would be which lenses do you use for photography? Tamron's have always been weird when talking through an adapter to another cameras mount. Canon and Sigma have for the most part been fine with no quirky problems.
      Hope this helps narrow down some ideas where the freeze could be coming from! Thanks again for stopping by! Hope to see you again in the next one!

      @@TLDR_filmmaker I'm using both original Panasonic batteries and third party batteries on both cameras. At first I thought is was the SD card causing the locking up problem but then discovered that others were having same problems as I and it was their adapters even one person was using the Metabones and it acted up on them. Perhaps something in the Lumix firmware must be addressed because if the adapter has a little wiggle room it really should not lock up the camera like it does. It is an annoyance but I work around it and deal with it. Over all I am very much pleased with the quality and performance of the GH 5 and G85. I just wish that there is a better solution then putting a piece of tape between the adapter and camera to lessen the camera "freak out" effect. BTW I have not updated my camera firmware since last year I know it is time to do so.

      I feel the panasonic firmware side of things have done weird stuff to adapters. I'm actually still on very old firmware on my GH5, I'm still on firmware 2.2. A lot of the problems people have been having since 2.3, I don't experience. That being said, Viltrox has been pretty responsive with user's inquiries and I believe are actively working as fast as they can while panasonic continuously updates firmware.

      Hey hey Smitty Adventures!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      The IBIS through this adapter is spot on and behaves like a normal Panasonic lens as all the EXIF data is transferred through. The combination of GH5 and Sigma is a great combination not because of focal length, but the weight of the setup is perfect when going handheld. The weight is more or less right under your lens holding hand and floats very well when paired with IBIS.

      Hey hey Riko!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      I actually have never used the adapters own Tripod Mount, I removed it the moment I got the adapter. Is your arca swiss plates 1/4" 20 screw not able to rotate into the mount? If you have another 1/4" 20 screw I would see if that one might have better luck (though I doubt this would be the case, but worth a try) if it doesn't fit still, then it's most likely a manufacture defect of the tripod mount on the adapter. If the lens you are using on your gimbal is not heavy, then I would just remove the adapters tripod mount with the included Allen Wrench. But if you really need the adapters tripod mount then I would contact Viltrox to see if they can send you out just that part instead of a whole new adapter.

    I finally got a good one today, this is my 3rd Wiltrox. EF M2. I am very happy and work well in photo and very sharp in video GH5 with Sigma Art 35mm F/1.4. My 1st one were defective, camera communication failed to attach lens. I sent back to Hong Kong and got a replacement but it is still bad. AF in still is also bad and many time fail to acquired focus and poor image quality. In video mode, image quality degraded to a point that I am not willing to use it for anything. I eventually throw it in the trash can. I keep thinking want to get the Metabone adapter but I am not willing to spent $600+ for it. The majority of TH-cam gave high regards in the Wiltrox adapter. So I decide to spent the money for a 3rd one. I figure it is still so damn cheap compared to Metabone adapter. Worth another try. Sure enough I got a good Wiltrox adapter works really in AFS in photo and very good image quality in video. I got a large selection of EF L Lenses and I am so freaking happy about this.

      Most likely its the optical adjustments and adding some sort of extra padding to the mounting sides of the adapter to snug everything up. Thats my guess as theres not much else that can be done to the adapter itself. However I may experiment with some felt material on the lens mount side of the adapter to see if it does anything for internal reflections. While this adapter doesn't seem to exhibit any, I'm still gonna test it out and see what it does!

      Since these adapters are only for MFT cameras to turn them into S35 sensors (more or less) its nice that you wont have to worry too much with adapters. What camera do you film with?
      A lot of the work I do delves with narrative filmmaking, no event videography or corporate videos. So the two lenses I use, with this adapter, for my work are the [Sigma 18-35 f/1.8] and [Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 OS ver.]
      My first feature film was shot entirely on Rokinon Prime lenses (EF Mount + passive optical booster], and they were amazing but I felt we spent too much time swapping out lenses to get the right background/subject compression for or shots. So this prompted me to move over to zoom lenses, not so that I can be lazy and just zoom in, but so that my camera operators could get to the correct focal length I needed without having to change out the lens. Definitely gonna do a video about this topic in the near future.

I had no problems with wide angle, wide open, all of it was in acceptable sharpness for film. However I don't really use the booster anymore on my Sigma 18-35, it is not on my Sigma 50-150. Hi, I have a question. I have a gh5 with a viltrox ef-m2 and a sigma 18-35. The problem I have is that I have lost control of the aperture, it does not react when I open or close it. I think I lost it when I changed my lens to a 75-300 of canon and when putting back the sigma no longer had control of opening. You would know how to fix it?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greetings Juanma!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      I would first check the pins on the lens and adapter just to make sure its clear of anything that could have gotten into the way, one time I thought my adapter died as it showed 0.0 for aperture, when I dismounted the lens I saw something that was blocking one of the pins (not sure how it got there, but there it was)
      Another thing to test is to see if the Adapter or the lens is damaged, if you have another EF camera or a friend that does, I would test the lenses aperture there to see whats going on.
      Lastly, as a general note, it is not recommended to hotswap with active adapters because of how they have to translate and communicate a different mount lens to a different mount body. Unless you hotswap it from MFT mount, but even then probably not a good idea.
      If it turns out the lenses are fine and the adapter for some reason no longer works. I would e-mail Viltrox to let them know and show them a cell phone video of how its not working. From what I heard they seem very responsive about everything, just be courteous and always calmly explain the situation.

      Hey hey Ki Rin!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Yes, you won't be able to electronically talk to your GH5 camera meaning that IBIS will have to be manual set instead of it being automatic, you won't be able to use the lenses true iris blades, If you do some hobby photography as well, you won't be able to use AF because of the lack of electronics.
      Generally speaking an EF mount more ideal as there are many lenses that's popular in that mount and, almost always, third party lens makers will always account for the EF mount market.

    Do you happen to have any other EF lenses besides the Sigma 18-35? I'm having a very strange problem with my Viltrox. It "disconnects" from my GH5 when I take a picture with autofocus on my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 II and my Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8. What I mean by "disconnect" is that it will lose connection momentarily (like if I am twisting the lens off slightly), take the picture, and then "reconnect". Sometimes will lose the electronic connection completely (no AF/IS) so I'd have to flip the AF/MF switch on the lens to actually enable the AF/IS (or else turn on/off the camera). Other times it reconnects fine.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey CSF!
      I just recently acquired the Sigma 50-150 2.8 OS version and it works perfectly with the Viltrox from AF, Aperture adjustments and IBIS. I have not had the experience where my viltrox disconnects.
      I would try making sure the adapter and the GH5 firmwares are updated, and if the mounts feel loose to go ahead and try the clear tape method I showed in the video to keep the contacts from moving. If this doesn't help I would ask the seller or Viltrox for a replacement.
      The only other thing I can think of is that Tamron traditionally has been weird with these smart adapters, even from metabones, there is some odd way its communicating EF data to the GH5 that either makes the lens not work correctly or the camera body to be confused.

      My apologies I couldn't get to your comment sooner but that is strange you are getting that error with the G80. I've been hearing more problems with lens attachments lately and I suspect it may have to do something with the most updated firmware for the Viltrox.
      I personally am still on the 2nd firmware they issued and have no had any problems with electronic and manual lenses that other filmmakers are now starting to have. I would visit Viltrox website and download and install their older firmware 2.1 (I believe it was) and see if that helps.
      Viltrox is also quite responsive from what I hear in their emails, so if that doesn't work I would let them know what your setup is so that they have the most information to work off of and hopefully address it in a future firmware update.
      Hope this helps! Let the community know if going back to older firmware helps your situation!

      No, this adapter is only for Canon EF (not EF-M) lenses, the Sigma Contemporary are already made for MFT mount, so the mounts are not the same. Also the lenses distance from the sensor are different. MFT is much closer than EF. So even if you were able to convert, the Sigma lens will never be able to focus because it is sitting so far away from the sensor, its not built to focus from that distance.

      What lens are you trying to use the viltrox with? If it's a full manual lens, you will want to block the electrical contact on the camera mount side of the viltrox with a clear piece of tap. The reason is because Panasonic recent firmware has changed something that makes the camera not recognize the viltrox. Viltrox, last I knew, are working on a firmware fix to compensate with the panasonics firmware.

      Greeting Ralph!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      I do not get a jello effect in my videos at at the 18mm focal length, the only way I can do that is to force it to happen by wildly swinging my camera left to right as the GH5 does pretty well with the rolling shutter problem. Are you able to upload a youtube video for me to see if your Jello effect matching my experience with the GH5?
      The Jello effect is technically not able to be stopped when you are on a CMOS sensor because of how it scans an image, there will always be a very slight Jello effect. The GH4 vs the GH5 is very night and day in terms of which one has the most jello effect. The GH5 by comparison almost looks like a Global Shutter compared to the GH4 and Sony A7 gen 1 and gen 2.
      Let me know in a reply here when you upload a video for me to check!

      The internal lens coating is not that bad, I've shot directly at a window with the subjects in front with the Sigma 18-35. Because of the way it was shot and the style we were going for, the subjects were nice and contrast in the shot.
      This will also be dependent on how well your actual lens handles direct light.
      But as far as I can tell with my combination, it does well, only a certain angles you may lose contrast, but again it also depends on how well your actual lens handles direct light.

      I have not updated my firmware to any of the recent ones because everything for what I need is working, my GH5 is also on older firmware as well. I'm of the mindset "if its not broken, don't fix it". I don't really use the 50mm 1.8 (non STM version) for AF needs so I won't be updating my firmware anytime soon to check. However my suspicion is that it won't be fixed because the non-STM version was replaced by the STM version, i'm not sure if the STM version is ok with AF.

    I have the metabones Ultra for my GH5, but I'm thinking about buying the Viltrox M1 (non speedboosted with no glass) so I can double my focal range and have that as an option as well. For example my Canon 70-200 would become a 400mm at full. I am wondering your thoughts on optical quality of a FF lens (that was designed to be on a FF camera) cropped in like that on M43? Do you think the optical quality of the lens circle would still hold up well being double it's intended range? I know it's fine with the metabones ultra at around 284mm full zoom, so hopefully cropping in that extra "100" mm would hold up?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey hey again J T!
      Thank you so much for checking out another video and commenting!
      While a photographer may have a different opinion, I feel the lens should hold up just fine because we are forcing our sensor readouts into a 4k resolution instead of the full 20mpx image, and of course we're usually shooting something moving slightly so the motion blur will be taken into consideration.
      For me sharpness I'm a little more lenient on when it comes to pixel peeping, the lens would need to have a pretty noticeable from the back LCD screen problem for me to consider it unuseable. I have an old vintage lens from an unheard brand and it won't get sharp no matter what as gives everyone a edge blur glow. Might be handy for a dream sequence, but definitely not for regular filming.
      If you wanted, you could maybe get a cheap $10 dummy adapter off of Amazon and see how you like it and if the lens holds up for you, if it does then you can decide to get a M1 later and maybe scour ebay for a used deal, or of course purchase new.
      Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by and I'll see you in the next one!

      Greetings John!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and for the kind words! I'll definitely continue to do my best and put out fun meaningful content for filmmakers and aspiring filmmakers alike!
      There seem's to be something going on in terms of people's Viltrox adapters not working when attaching a manual lens to it. For me I have no problems at all with my manual lenses except for the ones where the adapters are metal and jump the contacts on the adapters to look for a signal.
      A couple things I've learned so far from other viewers commenting on my Viltrox videos. Viltrox is aware of the problem and have a very very temp fix, they are working on a more solid firmware to handle this. So make sure to check on their website often for a new firmware.
      Second thing I found out that its most likely on Panasonics side of the problem, not Viltrox, in that in the recent firmwares from Panasonic has changed something. My GH5 is not on the newest firmware, its on 2.2 and my viltrox is on the older 2.1 firmware. With this combination I have no problems using my Manual lenses.
      So long story short, Panasonic's firmware updates has done something different that originally was fine. Viltrox is aware of the problem and are working on it.
      Another option you can do with your current temp fix is instead of taping over the electrical contacts on the adapter, see where the electronic contacts would hit on the mount of the manual lens and put a piece of tape over there instead. That way your manual lenses will be blocking the contacts and your Sigma 18-35 will be free to engage with the contacts.
      Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by!

      Greetings bhaghesh!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      If you are specifically using Canon EF-S mount lenses, it will not work because this mount design has a protrusion in the back that will hit the Viltrox's optic lens. Some people have gotten those lenses to fit by cutting off this protrusion, but you will be risking your lens by doing so.
      The next confusion about this is lenses made by third parties like Sigma and Tokina and if their crop sensor lenses will work. Yes they will because they create these lenses with a EF mount instead of the EF-S mount, so when getting third party Canon lenses, they will mount to viltrox adapter just fine. However be aware of Tamron as their EF protocol is not quite the same and people have had problems with their lenses being adapter electronically.
      Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by in the comments! Hope to see you in the next one every Wednesdays! (minus holiday weeks)

      Hey fmrl productions!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and asking a question!
      In terms of the USB, there apparently are many different types of cables that all have the same plug. You need a USB cable that allows both "Data Transfer" and deliver Power to the device so that the computer can see it. I think usually cellphone USB cables will work, I myself tried a couple different ones too to finally get one that was the right type.
      As for the Canon 55-250mm, that lens is an EF-S mount, unfortunately Canon's own crop sensor lenses wont work on these adapter due to how Canon designed them. The reason third party crop sensor lenses work is because they all use the full EF mount instead of the weird EF-S mount :(

      If you were to buy it used it would definitely depend on what kind of deal you can find. No doubt that Metabones has a faster firmware development team if problems arise, however Viltrox has not slacked in this department. They've actually continue to develop their firmware for this now 2+ year old adapter, most recently making sure that the adapter is working with BMPCC 4k and Z-Cam. So... to answer your question... I think I'd still save some money and get the Viltrox unless you come across a Metabones that's within $50 of the Viltrox. Hope this helps! See you in the next one!

      Greetings Engaged Films!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting!
      It seems what has happened for some users is when they upgraded their GH5 or GH5s to the latest firmware, Panasonic changed something in the coding that now is confused when it searches for a manual lens through the Viltrox adapter. For me I am still on older firmware both on the GH5 and Viltrox so I do not have this problem.
      Viltrox is aware of this problem and are working on a firmware to work alongside the newer Panasonic firmware. Until the, the easy temp fix is to place a piece of clear tape over the flat electrical contacts on the Viltrox adapter (camera body side) and that will cover it from the GH5/GH5s. At this point the GH5/GH5s will assume you just have a dummy adapter on and work as normal with your full manual lenses.

      Hey Ole Stork!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      Hmm... looking at my adapter, if I had to guess, if you screwed the optics too far down into the camera side, the optic would push up against the electronic contacts (the flat ones) on the adapter. If this was the case it could knock off the alignment or break from the connection the Pin shaped contacts on the lens side of the adapter.
      When you mount the lenses and turn on the GH5, does the GH5 immediately ask you what your focal length is? And after you go past that menu the aperture just reads "zero"? If so, then that would definitely mean that the flat contacts are not making connection to the camera.
      Perhaps try and unscrew the optics a tiny bit back the other direction and see if the adapter works again. Hopefully the contacts didn't break from each other.
      Definitely let us know your findings, so sorry that you're having troubles with the first and second adapter :(

      Hey KenslyFresh!
      Thank you so much for checking out a video and asking a question!
      There are two things I can think of to try.
      1) Go to viltrox's website and download their latest firmware for the EM2
      2) Do a quick google search "Viltrox EF-M2 and BMPCC" I recalled reading that you had to do something like turn on the BMPCC with the adapter without a lens and then mount the lens and then the aperture will work. It was a odd sequence that someone said and it worked. Basically what they said was that the BMPCC wasn't contacting through the adapter correctly upon start up sequence, so you had to trick it.
      As for the AF jumping around, my Canon 50mm 1.8 does the same thing. With older lenses and different motor focusing technologies, I don't think this adapter has the profiles for the camera, so it'll basically miss focus every time. All my sigmas New gen and old gen (circa 2012) have no problems working through the Viltrox as well.

      While I do not have a BMPCC4k to personally test the adapter, I have heard that the adapter works on the BMPCC4k. Received mine yesterday and it’s going back on Monday. I have the Canon M50 with a Canon 10-18 EFS and Tamron 18-200 vcll., I was hoping to use...The 10-18 DOES NOT FIT the Vitrox. THE Tamron does but the vignetting is horrible. Then after watching and reading about the firmware update, it was a fail even after trying 2 different laptops and 4-5 different USB CABLES,
    Bottom line, it’s heading back to the vendor. I had so hoped it would work.
    Respectfully yours.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greetings BirdogEd!
      Thank you so much for checking out and commenting. Here are the reasons why you are experiencing some problems with the adapter.
      The Canon 10-18 won't fit because Canon branded EFS lenses adds an extra piece of plastic that sticks out and it hits the booster optics. Third party lenses generally won't have this problem because they use the EF mount instead.
      The reason the Tamron 18-200 is vignetting like crazy is because its a APS-C crop sensor lens which means it was made for the M50 sensor size already. By adding the booster you are making the image circle even smaller on your M50, this is why you see the vignette. You need to use a full frame lens so that you do not get a vignette.
      I'm not sure about the failed USB update, I know I used two different cables, a USB Cable that went into a smartphone worked for me because those cables are capable of transferring data and power. It's weird how those USB cables are not made the same :/
      Sorry I couldn't give any good news, but if you want to adapt those lenses to the M50, you will need the Viltrox Adapter that DOES NOT have the BOOSTER optics. Hope the vendor will make the transaction smooth for your return process.

      Yes Sir, I have an M50 for the body and the Viltrox adaptor connected to it fine. Then I screwed down the glass in the adapter with a latex glove as far as it would turn, as you recommended. Then, I attempted to mount my Canon 10-18 EFS lens with NO success. The next lens was my Tamron 18-200 and while it fit, you would see a dark online in the view finder and back screen as though looking through a round hole.
      The vendor I purchased the adapter from on Amazon is taking it back with no problem, the only thing is they did not list which lenses fit and which did not and what the outcome would be with those lenses. When I went over to the Viltrox page on Amazon ,they have a Camera lens fitment list but you can’t zoom in on it and it’s printed so small you can’t see it… At least not on my iPhone.
      Thank you for the kind reply!

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are most welcome. Glad the Vendor is taking it back!
      Just remember, because the lenses you have are already meant for the M50's sensor size that buying a booster adapter won't work, you need to by the non-boosted viltrox adapter for it to work on the mirrorless body. If you buy a full frame lens, then it will work with the adapter you bought and be able to zoom.

      Greetings Breadshots!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      Unfortunately due to how lenses are built it is not possible to take a native lens and further boosting, boosters only work for lenses with the following criterias:
      1) The lens you want to use projects an image circle that is larger than the MFT sensor. MFT lens will obviously only cover a MFT sensor. So if you were somehow able to booster it, it will make the circle smaller than the censor and you end up with a circle in your video.
      2) The lens also needs to come from a system where its flange (distance from sensor) is greater than the native MFT system. This is the only way a booster can be used on older DSLR lenses because the flange distance is much greater than a Mirrorless lens. So since a mirrorless lens is already at the correct flange distance, increasing it won't be any help.
      On an off note theory, I have a feeling in the next two generations of cameras, ISO performance is going to be so good due to advancements in technology that standard 2.8 zoom lenses will no longer be a problem for the GH systems. We're slowly getting to that point, and when we get there, the question for lens choices will be how shallow of a depth of field do you want in your work. Exciting time!
      Thank you so much for stopping by, and I'll see you in the next one!

    Mine is too tight to attach to my Sigma 18-35mm. I can get it on if I really force it but I thought I was never going to get it off the lens. Does anyone know how I can fix it or why this is? Seeing 50% of people say yes to 18-35 and 50% say no? Works ok on my Canon 50mm 1.4, and Tamron 17-50 2.8 (non VC).

      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey David!
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting!
      That is odd that its tight on the Sigma, but not tight on the Canon and Tamron.
      Would you say the Canon and Tamron feel oddly loose or just about right?
      If it feels right, then it leads me to believe that it could potentially be on the Sigma lenses side as generally all the Sigma's I've used on this booster have fit just like any other official Canon or Third Party EF lens.

    • @davidspiers6638
      @davidspiers6638 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Canon & Tamron feel like a regular camera mount but the Sigma is so tight. So it must be my 18-35 :( I have a friend with the Metabones, I might try and see if that mounts to my 18-35 and may end up having to get one if that's the case.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try this and lets see if we can narrow down the possible problems. Take a level profile view of your Sigma lens mount with either the Canon or Tamron on level next to it. Theres that little lip that kinda juts out that locks onto the cameras female mount. I'm wondering if the Sigma's lip is a little bit flared towards the front element, if it is compared to the Tamron and Canon, then that would explain why its so hard to mount onto the Viltrox Adapter because its scrapping really hard on the understand of the female lens mount on the Viltrox.
      If this happens to be the case and you can clearly see it in the photo, Sigma may possibly replace it for you?
      Hope this makes sense and hope we can narrow down some solutions.

    • @davidspiers6638
      @davidspiers6638 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never even considered that but the black flange around the electronics is actually 0.4mm larger on the 18-35. They all work on my 60D so the lens isn't faulty. You never want to force anything on a camera and that's what it feels like so I may not use it on that lens. Thanks for your help!

    Just wanted to ask if you noticed a strange motor sound in continuous AF, when using the GH5+Viltrox+Sigma 18-35mm combo. Its quite loud, and the shotgun mic picks it.
    Thanks, keep up with the great videos!!

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Criatura!
      Thank you so much for the kind words, checking out the video, and asking a question! Unfortunately I feel there is no way for our Sigma 18-35 lenses to have near silent continuous AF because of a couple things.
      1) The lens was not originally built for silent Continuous AF, so the way the EF protocol is talking to the adapter and then to the camera body comes in "stepping" form instead of a smooth transition focus.
      2) The motor technology isn't a fly-by-wire system like a Canon STM focusing lens. I'm not entirely sure if a STM lens would fair better in continuous AF mode, but it might be more silent than an HSM lens.
      The only thing I can think of is to use a Wired or Wireless Lav mic depending on how you use your camera and the subjects you film, or to perhaps invest in a native Panasonic lens for silent AF.
      The new GH5 firmware thats coming at the end of this month supposedly enhances the Continuous AF in video mode, I will hopefully do some tests to see how well its improved even though I don't use this feature.
      Hope this helps!

    Does it vignette with the sigma 18-35 when shooting photos?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey hey Jor!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! In terms of the GH5 sensor, and probably more so on the GH5S, there is an ever so slight vignette, nothing that can't be fixed with lightroom. But if you have a pretty bright scene, the vignette isn't really that noticeable. All and all since I only use this sensor in 16:9 ratio, I don't notice it at all in my work, If you photograph in 4:3 the vignette will probably be a little more noticeable on the wider angle. On a different note since about a couple months ago, I have stopped using this boosted adapter and switched over to the non-boosted adapter for my Sigma 18-35, not because the adapter doesn't work well, but because I've realized I really don't need the wider look and the extra stop of light.
      Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by and I'll see you in the next one!

      Greetings Phuoc Vu!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      EF-S lenses will not work with this adapter because of the way canon designed their EF-S lenses, it will hit the glass in the adapter. STM lenses i've heard works, but I don't personally have a STM lens to try it out. As for Autofocus, the GH system is not great at it in general for video, so I wouldn't count on it for video focus. If you're talking about Photography focus, it does a pretty good job with my Sigma lenses for slow moving or still subjects. However photography AF performance depends on what lens you use the adapter with, my old Canon 50mm 1.8 version 1 will not AF no matter what. Until Viltrox includes the lens profile into the firmware, the AF will not get focus.
      You'll want to check out Viltrox's lens compatibility sheet to see if your lens is on there. My Sigma lenses technically are not on the list, but because Sigma's internal chip works nearly like canon's chips, my Viltrox has been able to get focus for photography!
      Hope this helps! Remember that Viltrox has two different adapters for the GH4 and the Canon m50. I noticed a lot of people are getting the wrong adapters for the cameras because the model numbers look very similar.

    how much force did you have to put into it while turning to adjust infinity focus? With mine I can turn it but at some Point it gets quite hard to turn any further. However, infinity Focus can still not be reached under about 32mm. Does anybody know why this could be? I am using a GH4 with a Sigma 17-50mm

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey hey again Mats!
      I turned the optics to the point where I couldn't turn it further. While its not perfect, I can see reach infinity focus in the "beyond infinity focus" area of the lenses marking. While not ideal, I was able to reach it.
      That's very odd you're not able to reach infinity focus under 32mm, but can above it. When you're at, say 50mm on your lens, what part of the lens focus markings do you achieve infinity focus? Is it on that flat line part of the infinity L logo that I show in the video? Or is it before it, closer to the feet/meter markings?

    • @matskroehnert
      @matskroehnert 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey again!
      I reach infinity Focus before the mark. when I set the lens to infinity Focus at 17 mm I can zoom in to 32 mm to reach infinity. It goes beyond infinity afterwards. I don´t really understand it either :(

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm...if you reach infinity before the mark, the you might actually have to rotate the optics counter clockwise when looking at the optic from where the lens mounts onto the adapter. For me I had the opposite problem, my infinity wouldn't hit until further on the back end in "beyond infinity focus" territory, so when I screwed it clockwise, it got it closer to the infinity mark. Perhaps give that a try and see if you can nail it!

      Unfortunately rotating the element inside is the only thing that can be done at this time. I must have been lucky with the adapter I got as I have not had any problems with focusing to infinity. It may be different with everyone but perhaps try rotating the element in the other direction to see if it gets you closer. I suggest this because other users here report that their infinity focus hits in a different spot than mine. Hope this helps!

      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      The quick answer is to put a piece of clear tape on the Viltrox's flat contact side (the side facing the camera sensor)
      I have no problems with manual lenses on my Viltrox because I have not updated to any of the newer firmwares on my GH5 and Viltrox. Somewhere along the line, Panasonic changed their way of interpreting a manual or electronic lens. Since the Viltrox is electronic, this confuses the GH5 as its reading the contacts but then there is no signal coming from the Viltrox to Manual lens contacts.
      Last I heard, Viltrox is aware of this problem and have been working on a firmware solution on their end to accommodate the new Panasonic GH5 firmware.
      Hope this helps! Thank you again for stopping by in the comments! Hope to see you in the next one every Wednesdays!

    I have noticed Viltrox has way smaller lens compatibility list than Metabones. Please write them e-mails if your particular lens does not work with the adapter. Maybe they will fix the issues. I've already reported issues with many EF-S lenses, even though these aren't oficially compatible, I'd still love to see some progress there. For example, Metabones Speedbooster is working fine with Canon EF-S 10-18mm. This particular lens is interesting because it is the cheapest AF and IS ultra wide angle lens out there. Please just let them know you want your lens to be compatible with their adapter! @TLDR Filmmaker - you should also send them this video, maybe they will fix Sigma 18-35 auto focus issues.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Maciej!
      In my first video I talk about how Metabone's, while expensive, will most likely beat out Viltrox in terms of Firmware updates. I believe they have a much larger team of people doing the coding for their adapters. Viltrox will be behind, but I also have a suspicion that they could be re-engineering the code from Metabones for the Viltrox. For now we'll have to see how well viltrox responds after the adapter has been out for one year, because they are selling so well, they may actually dedicate more resources to the longevity of this adapter.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greetings Jeremy!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      While I don't have the Sigma 50-100 personally (I have the old 50-150), this adapter shouldn't have a problem. The recent problems that viewers asked me about was more for their manual lenses that have no electronic contacts. I have yet to update my GH5 to v2.3 and my Viltrox is still on v2.1, Panasonic did something in v2.3 that now confuses itself when it has a electronic adapter on with a manual lens. Viltrox is aware of that problem and are working to fix it. Until then a clear piece of tape over the Viltrox's Camera side flat contacts will do the trick and allow you to use your manual lenses with the Viltrox Optics.
      That being said, I don't think the Sigma 50-100 should have a problem. Sigma's protocols have all been very close to Canon so their lenses have worked with adapters quite well. If there is a problem, I would first see if the Viltrox needs to update its firmware, if the mount needs to be tightened with some tape on the camera side to ensure it doesn't wiggle, and very lastly to get a replacement if there is a problem with the adapter.
      Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Hope to see you in the next one every Wednesday!

      Hey Sean!
      While I don't have a GH5s to give a definitive answer, there shouldn't be any reason this adapter wont work since both the GH5 and GH5s are of the same generation and mount protocol. When it comes to changing the aperture on the lens, this adapter shouldn't have any problems. Where it may differ is if you're wanting to use this adapter for photography or continuous AF in video mode, thats where it will be more dependent on the lens you choose to pair it with. Hope this helps!

    Metabones is unreasonably expensive. Being greedy can be the only reason.
    That said I have now read pretty bad things about the Viltox M2 ii too from long time users.

      Hey hey AlphaCentauri24!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      It really is expensive, Kipon is kind of up there too, but not as bad, I just wished the Kipon Firmware team was faster like Viltrox. That being said, what have you heard about the EF-M2 II version? I have the Mark 1 version and still use it to this day without any problems, I don't think the Mark 2 was any different except for maybe updated optical coating from newer batches of the Metabones optics.
      Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

    Not sure if I've posted on one of your videos or not (sorry if I have!) but I seem to be having issues with my EF-M2 and Canon lenses, such as the 85 1.8 and 50 1.8 with autofocus. It will hunt for a second, then give up. Autofocus works fantastically on my Sigma 18-35 and Tokina 11-16, so I'm not really sure what's going on. I know my G85's firmware is up to date, but I'll check the Viltrox again tonight. Hopefully someone has had this issue and can give some advice on it!

      Hey hey again Casey!
      I remember you posting before, but it wasn't in regards to the 50mm and 85mm Autofocus performance with the Viltrox. Unfortunately you're not alone, I have an older 50mm 1.8 (non STM version) and mine does the same thing where it wont achieve focus. I think it has something to do with when those lenses were made and for what type AF system they were made for, so when the focus data is being converted through the adapter its not reading the way it needs for the GH5 to understand. Not sure if thats true, just my thoughts on why it may not work. I generally say these adapters are just for videographers that need to change aperture and use IBIS on the MFT cameras, I wouldn't count on these to replace native lenses for photographer where AF is needed :(
      That being said, its all up to Viltrox if they will develop the firmware update to accommodate for these older lenses.

      Just now saw this. Thanks for the reply! I just updated to 3.0 hoping it would help, but as I predicted, it did not. lol What you said makes sense, so I might try a few other lenses around a similar focal length to see if autofocus works with those. If not, I might sell the 85 1.8 and go for the Rokinon 85 1.4. If I can't use autofocus, I might as well gain a stop of light, right? haha

      It's likely hit and miss as to whether a lens will work with these adapters. With my Tamron 90mm macro mounted on the Viltrox the camera would say, "This lens is unsupported." On the Metabones XL 0.64x it works just fine.

    Just got my viltrox ef-m2 yesterday. The back lens (lens closer to the sensor) a bit wobble. If i shake the adaptor, lense wobbling a bit. Is it normal? I can't test it with lens because my lens not arrived yet. Thx for sharing

      Hey Kotak!
      Mine was a little loose too, simply do the "infinity focus fix" that I described in this video and it will tighten it up and should get you to infinity focus as well when your lens arrives. Hope this helps!

      TLDR Filmmaker not the canon brand. will be using yongnuo 85mm 1.8 (canon mount). Hope it will work. On yongnuo's website, they compatible list only for yongnuo 50mm 1.8.

      I hope so too. I would guess that Aperture and IBIS should work because that information, I believe, is standard to pass through the Viltrox. If you're using it for photography with AutoFocus, that could be a different story. Definitely let the community here know if the lens works for you. Hope it does!

    Hey!! I was wondering if the Viltrox EF-M2 work with the new GX9? Can you please do a test about it? Or of anyone who has already done it can let me know..

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Ali!
      Someone yesterday asked that very question yesterday! I wish I have an answer, but unfortunately I don't have a GX9 to test and no one has commented yet if they've tried. I would assume the adapter will work in terms of aperture control and IBIS with most lenses, however the AF performance would be up in the air. But in all honesty, if you want to do more with photography, I would invest in native lenses for the best performance. Sorry I couldn't give you a 100% answer, hopefully someone will be able to chime in!
      Thanks again for checking out the video!

      TLDR Filmmaker hey! Thank you so much for answering though, most content creators wont even consider :P anyhow, if I had to go for a lens with the GX9 for semi-pro/pro photography (this'll be my first M43, moving from a Nikon D7200) what native lens should I go for? I'm pretty much a bokeh hungry guy and as far as I've done my research, M43 offers a bit less bokeh than either FF or APS-C. Also what do you think about the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DN DC lens for M43?
      Sorry for throwing a truck load of questions on you. I get pretty hyped up by photography!

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not a problem Ali! What kind of photography do you do the most? The sigma 30 is a beautiful lens, my friend has it and I use it sometimes for shoots. It's sharp and gives you a nice bokeh when wide open. It's a nice between a normal and portrait focal length and not as expensive as the Panasonic 42.5mm 1.4.

    • @alinoorchaudhry347
      @alinoorchaudhry347 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      TLDR Filmmaker I'm a portraiture kinda guy. Because I live right in the middle of the city, so I don't have much of a luck getting landscapes. Although I love landscapes. I do it when I'm off abroad or so. And also by your words I now feel pretty confident about the Sigma 30mm f1.4. I was also intimidated by the Panaleica 25mm f1.4 but quite a few people told me that it's less sharper, approximately $200 more expensive and the extra 10mm on the Sigma will give me better subject isolation. So maybe my new go-to will be the Sigma.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think you will be disappointed with the Sigma 30mm for your current needs. You can always upgrade later on and sell the Sigma to offset the cost. Thats what I love about lenses, their resale value is generally pretty good when you decide to upgrade! As far as other options go for the future, I would also look at the Olympus Pro line of Primes with f/1.2. They are really expensive for MFT lenses, however I feel Olympus has a better portrait glass in how they craft the image and colors, you may want to look into those for the future when you're ready to upgrade! Hope this helps!

    Had a Viltrox and sold it. The MB is costly, thats for sure, but it blows away the Viltrox it definitly more sharp and the autofocus "just works", no need to hack / set weird stuff on the GH5. Clip it and use it.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Huexley!
      I don't disagree with you, ever since Metabones was able to launch more generations after its Gen1 adapter, they've definitely began to tighten down their QC from the manufacturers and have a cracking code developer team for firmware updates! The sharpness from my copy is pretty sharp and I have not had any complaints from the director of the film samples I showed in this weeks episode.
      That being said I was really only searching for an adapter that allowed Aperture and IBIS control with my GH5, the Kipons did not work and the speedbooster versions from Kipon were not acceptable compared to the Viltrox and Metabones. When all's said and done, I'm very happy with the Viltrox for narrative filmmaking, photography would be a completely different story.
      Thank you so much for checking out the video and commenting!

      I believe the director will be releasing the full trailer this month, I've seen the first assembled cut and many of the shots were done with the viltrox. Hey Aaron Es!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      This adapter has been around for almost a year now and it has decreased in price over time, I've seen some trusted sellers on Ebay and Amazon Prime have gone as low as $150. Do you recall if you bought the non-speedboosted version? Those were usually about $130 USD.
      Hopefully its not a dud, if you got the speedboosted version for $130, that's definitely a steal!
      Sorry I can't provide a more finite, Hopefully everything turns out ok!

      Ohhhh $h!t... well... I can't take a pic and upload it, so I'll describe my packaging if that helps. Okay. It came in a white box with a red/reddish interior. The actual mount comes inside of this gray case, almost like that of an engagement ring. I have a gray screw driver as well. An a hex key. There's a paper band that fits around the box (the white one, not the gray one) and on the side it reads: Compatible lenses: Canon EF series. Compatible cameras: M43. Focus mode: Auto Focus. Focal length multiplier: 0.71x. Optical glass: 4 groups, 5 glasses. Firmware update: USB upgrade port. Tripod socket: Cu1/4"x1. Diameter and length: 67mm x 20mm. Weight: Approx. 118g (excluding cap). Front cap: Camera cover. Rear cap: Lens dust cap. On the back: "Viltrox EF-M2 Auto Focus Mount Adapter. Viltrox EF-M2 mount adapter is designed to allow Canon EF-mount series lenses to be used on M43 cameras. Plus 0.71 based on the original focal length (equivalent focal length = focal length x 0.71), which helps increase 1 stop aperture. Build-in 4 groups, 5 pcs optical glasses, By adapter mounting it can achieve functions of EXIF signal transmission, AF (autofocus) and aperture adjustment, etc. Firmware upgrade can be operated via the USB port." lol. I can't believe I wrote all of that, but, I trust and value your insight so whatever details I can give you for a more accurate answer, the better. Thank you for responding by the way. I look forward to watching you grow as a filmmaker, DP, and rise to the ranks of being a DGA director or ASC cinematographer. Keep on rockin'. Thank you good sir!

    I paid right at $100 (U.S. Dollars) online for a new copy of this focal reducer. I am quite happy with it. All of my Canon EF glass doesn't function equally well with the Viltrox but, for the lenses that it does work with, it does quite a nice job both in auto focus and image quality...
    As an example, it works just fine with my 70-200mm f/4L IS lens on my A6400 but doesn't work at all with some of my older EF lenses like the 100mm f/2.8 (non-L) macro lens...

      Oh man I am so jealous you got it at $100, I jumped on super early during the first production run at $218, MFT version though. I hear ya, most of my Sigma EF lenses from last gen and current ART gen is fine, my classic Canon 50mm 1.8 version 1 (non-stm) cannot AF, but IBIS and Aperture works just fine (Which is all I want)

      Hey hey Moeshickyenyay!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      I don't disagree, I've tried Kipon, Commlite, and yes even a Metabones. The Metabones I ultimately returned because it burned two of my lenses aperture motors as well as scraped/loosley bent the metal mounts on my EF lenses. The Kipon's optic clouded any lens you put in front of it, no matter how far down I stopped the optics couldn't product sharp edges, also focal length data was not transmitted so the GH5 IBIS did not work, I returned it and realized they never updated their firmware for over a year when I already got the Viltrox. The Commlite is not too bad and actually pretty acceptable, but if I were to be nitpicky, their optic wasn't as sharp as the Viltrox and they don't seem up to update their firmware as often as Viltrox does (and still is currently doing)
      Is the Viltrox perfect, its pretty close, the only thing I will gripe about it is that the mount is not as tight as I would like to feel when I twist it onto the camera body, but other than that I have no complaints. For the money I spent and the amount of things I've filmed with it and got exactly what I wanted, this has been a money saver against the Metabones.
      That all being said, it really comes down to the latter, no one ever asked what adapter I shot with, the directors never asked me what adapter I shot with for their own feature films. I got exactly what they wanted and this adapter allowed me to use my Sigma 18-35 with my GH5 as well as my Sigma 50-150mm 2.8. We can all sit here and say metabones is better and worth the extra $450 USD. But to me, it isn't, because at the end of the day no one asked if I was using a Metabones or a different brand, they cared if I got the shot or not.
      Sorry for the long rant, but this is my experience, and up until this point no one asked me what adapter I was filming all my youtube videos with either (Viltrox). As creators we don't make videos to show that we shot it on a Metabones or a RED, that's not our job, our job is to deliver a moving picture to either educate or entertain, not to put emphasis on the tools we used. (Because 95% of the audience that watches our movies (that arnt filmmakers) wouldnt even know what question to ask))
      Hope this makes sense! Thanks again for stopping by and I'll see you in the next one!
