I'm confused and shocked that the Metabones lost the nice swirley bokeh that the generic maintained in the last comparison. That alone would rule out the Metabones for vintage lenses.
I expected the generic to do better. It was easy to tell which was the generic in every test. However, it was hard to tell the Viltrox and Metabones apart. I would have liked to see tests of chromatic aberrations in high contrast areas like tree branches against a bright sky to see if the Tantalum glass in then Metabones provides better aberration control than the cheaper glass in the Viltrox.

I have a question my friend.. If I use the viltrox speedbooster on my gh5 with the sigma 17-50 f2.8 and the 18-35 f1.8 how will the lenses be affected? (their aperture and focal length)
The speedbooster is for full frame glass only. People modify EF-s Apsc lenses to fit them. I've used the Sia 18-35mm on the EOS M with a speedbooster and it fit, just had vignette, so I'm pretty sure it will work fine on the GH5. I used to have that camera and the Sigma 30mm F1.4 on a speedbooster worked.

Great video Zeek. I had the impression that the Viltrox, while supporting AF in video for certain lenses, didn't support AF for all lenses. Can you comment on that or do you think they have corrected for this via recent firmware or whatever. Thanks and great vid!!

Just got mine viltrox today thanks for the review it helped a lot. In general It worked pretty good with my 50mm 1.8 ii and gave me more wider look. Only confusing part for me that, I can't get to see my aperture goes lower then f1.8 on my camera screen even after the viltrox firmware update. The odd thing is, I have a regular ef to ef-m glassles adapter too (commulite) so I can compare. After comparison test between regular commulite adapter and viltrox, I realized my viltrox speedboster with same nifty fifty, same iso, and same shutter in 1.8 aperture performs slightly brighter then my regular commulite adaptor. I am confused that people on amazon reviews showing that they were able to see f1.2 on their camera screen with the same nifty fifty and eos m.
Does it stay at f1.8 with the speedbooster? Check the viltrox supported lens page, the mark ii version may not be supported. It will be slightly brighter as you get an extra stop of light in the sensor, thereore more depth of field and slightly better low light performance.
Yeah, it stays at 1.8 with the speedboster and not allowing me to go lower then that. Interestingly both 50mm 1.8 ii and 50mm 1.8 stm are compatible their website says. I set them an email tho, lets see what they say.
@@ZeekEOSZ I made a detailed testing last night in low light and realized that it actually works secretly in the background :D It just won't show as f1.2 on your camera, instead it shows f1.8 but performing as f1.2. .Works or me :)
Zeek, big salute for the attempts you have been making to promote Magic lantern...... You always found to use the speed booster on eos-m. It has an APS-C sensor which can produce sufficient shallow depth of field. Then is it worth using a speed booster. Please share your views. 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
Thanks! Absolutely love speedboosters, they make such a great difference to the sensor! They're not always necessary, but they can be such an awesome help for lowlight, depth of field etc...😎👍 Highly recommended ✅
Thanks for this comparison. What i'm really interested in is the power consumption of the metabones. Does it draw more or less then the 10 mW, the Viltrox constantly drains out of the battery (even if the EOS Mx is switched off)?
The metabones is very good, better than the Viltrox in terms of handling power drainage. Some have reported the issues with the viltrox about draining battery even while off.
@@ZeekEOSZ Thanks! Good to know that. The connectors at the lens mount supply -whatever is put on- even while the cam is "off". This is by intention because some lenses need to retract some elements before you can put the lenscap on. And therefore they still need power after switching off the camera. Normally the controller in the lens or speedbooster gets the shutdown signal, retracts everything in a safe position and then puts itself into deep sleep mode for lowest power consumption. In my opinion this is a firmware issue with the viltrox, which can be fixed by an update.
For value def think generic is way to go. I found it a bit softer wider open than others but i actually prefer a slightly softer look anyway. Actually thought it had most pleasing bokeh and dof separation. Thanks, i was thinking of getting metabones but i don't think it's worth it now
I'm confused about lens adapters and focal reducers... In order to use vintage lenses with wanting to use a focal reducer, is there a universal focal reducer for my lenses? Or do I need to buy separate adapters to fit each lens depending on the lense makes?! And then do I have to connect those adapters onto a focal reducer to achieve this? I'm so confused......
The generic speedbooster has the lowest contrast and makes bokeh a little less pleasing, but the Viltrox and Metabones are extremely similar. Metabones is insane with their pricing. Fantastic video as always.
Hey Zeek, I encountered a firmware upgrade failed try again message whenever I attached a M42 Helios lens with adapter chip(M42-EF) on my EOSM+Viltrox Speedbooster. Could it be the adapter w/ chip?
I believe I've encountered this before with the Chip adapters, I removed the chip. If you don't want to do that then, possibly buying another generic adapter would be best.
Big thanks for this video! I like to use MF vintage lenses so the generic option suits me fine. Glad to hear (and see for myself) that there aren't any optical limitations with the generic. I actually went straight for an M42 to EF-M focal reducer (meaning one less adaptor in play). Really helpful video, as ever. Thanks again.
@@ZeekEOSZ yes, I will have to save money. I just received my helios 44m attached to the zenit EM, and I forgot the M42 adapter... lol but for 40USD, it is very cheap and in excellent condition, the focus is very very smooth!! so great!
I notice you have the speedbooster for EF-EOSM but what if you have an EOSM lens and want to speed bost it? Is there EOSM-EOSM speedboosters out there for that purpose?
hello!! I have the eos m and the eos m50 right now... I got the viltrox one just some minutes ago, but it doesn't work as I was thinking with my canon 50mm 1.8 FD, now it works like a macro... however it works very fine with my helios 44 2 58mm. Is that ok? (I saw you video about how to get a macro with the adapter plus the speed booster, so I didnt expect it works like this with mt FD...)
Hey Zeek, I've been looking for a speedbooster for my vintage nikon lenses to the eos m but I can't find one anywhere. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to adapt so is it just sacrilegious? I've got a regular adapter on the way, but I had to ship it from china. What the heck? is there some sort of patent issue? I wouldn't care if I didn't already own nikons.
Hi me i have Adaptateur de Canon EF et EF-S à EOS M - Meike MK-C-AF4 buy on amazon i ll be like to compare this meike to vitrox and metabones is good but i really want knox if metabones or vitrox has more speed for MAP (time to have for have correct focus point)
Would you say that VILTROX EF-EOS M2 0.71x Speed Booster is a good choice? Because I am on a tight budget and I have one 35mm EF mount cine lens for EOS M camera. I am thinking of using a speedbooster to use the cine lens as both wide angle lens and standard wide lens. Therefore, I will have equalient to using two lenses for the same short film.
I have purchased the viltrox and used it on a m50 mark 11 with a 3rd party cropped sensor lens and noticed heavy vignette from 14mm to about 20mm in my photos. Does the megabones still have vignette in the photos when used with a 3rd party crop lens? Thanks
Hi Zeek. Ive been watching your channel for a bit now, Im very interested in eosm camera ability to shoot 2.5k RAW, and be my B cam to M50 I own. I have a question about viltrox speedbooster. I have Sigma apsc 17-50mm 2.8 which on speedbooster gives a vignetting on eosm sensor, since ML crops sensor even further this should get rid of vignette and I should get f2, closer to real focal lengh as speedbooster gives 0.71 reductiont? Would that be correct? Cheers.
@@ZeekEOSZ thanks for reply, Ive found this on web: www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4348779 very interesting as I own both sigma 17-50 and tokina 11-16, Im most interested in pairing tokina glass with viltrox and ML on eosm body. Can you tell me if my focal calculation would be correct on this tokina at 11mm: 1.6 apsc crop + 2.9 ML crop = 4.5 overall crop. then 11mm x 4.5 crop = 49.5mm then 49.5mm x viltrox 0.71 = 35.14mm full frame equivalent. Would that be correct? Thanks.
Well apparently recently we've found 2.5K 16:9 has a crop factor of 2.36x + 1.6x, so overall 3.96x Crop, so that should definitely work with the Tokina 11-16mm & Speedbooster. I use the Tokina 12-28mm and that works fine with the speedbooster and the high resolution modes.
It is phisically impossible because of the flange distance, what is the same on all EOS DSLR cameras (fullframe and APS-C). So there's no space for any adapter.
Thanks again, Zeek. I've ordered the generic 42mm speed booster, I have 2 lenses to use it with. I don't suppose there is a C-Mount booster ?? I haven't found one, yet ??

Yeah thanks! It's so easy to get a natural look out of the EOS M Raw. The Sony takes a bit more of an effort. But I'm used to it and have made LUTs for it to get it where I want it. It's a very good companion to the Eos . Love Sigma Glass, the 30mm is my fav.
Hello Zeek, I have the EOS M with the Viltrox EF-EOS M2 . If I get a Helios-44M-4 with an adapter, can I use it along the Viltrox? or Should I get a Canon FD 1.4 50mm ? It would be an advantage to use the Viltrox with old lenses right? Thanks
Hey there, after your video about making the Canon eos M a budget Bolex 16D I got my self a vintage lens for super 16mm, thanks to the cropfactor the lens it a bit tight so I was thinking to get a speedbooster for it, its a PL mount wich can be adapted to the EF speedbooster but my concern its about quality, you think pairing them up will be a good idea, have you tried it?
It should work with the crop factor, as for the image quality I wouldn't have a clue as I don't know what the lens is. 2.5k or 2.8k raw video looks really amazing, absolutely love it. Wide lenses are good, I use 7Artisans 12mm and Canon 10-18mm hacked on a speedbooster. You're lens should be fine depending on the focal length.
One thing that will save a lot of Mac owners a big head ache is to not upgrade the firmware on the Viltrox on a Mac, borrow a friend’s PC instead! Be warned!
Yeah because the speedbooster has no electronic connection to correct the abberation. I like it though, guess it depends on the look you're trying to get across. For the clean stuff, stick with Viltrox/Metabones. Moreso the latter.
I'm sorry, but it's not a helpful test at all. Why didn't you do a stopped-down test with the field footage? At least the Gorilla (which appears the same as generic) speed booster (Nikon g f lens to Sony e) is just unusable at any f stop other than wide open to f4. From about f5.6 onwards, you get a coloured blob in the middle of the image. The Metabones will boast superior-quality optics. Which is why it's more expensive. I can't vouch for Metabones with Nikon mounts but I can with ef to e and there's absolutely no coloured ghosting and blobs at any f stop. Maybe it's a matter of 'you get what you pay for'?
I'm confused and shocked that the Metabones lost the nice swirley bokeh that the generic maintained in the last comparison. That alone would rule out the Metabones for vintage lenses.

I feel a little bit swirly bokeh with filtrox speedbooster...
Yes it does bring a swirly effect 👍
Yeah interesting. I've used the STM, and it goes down to F1.2.
@@ZeekEOSZ I made a detailed testing last night in low light and realized that it actually works secretly in the background :D It just won't show as f1.2 on your camera, instead it shows f1.8 but performing as f1.2. .Works or me :)
@@ozanyildirim wierd, but yeah, if it works 😎🤘🎥🔥🔥
Zeek, big salute for the attempts you have been making to promote Magic lantern...... You always found to use the speed booster on eos-m. It has an APS-C sensor which can produce sufficient shallow depth of field. Then is it worth using a speed booster. Please share your views. 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
Thanks! Absolutely love speedboosters, they make such a great difference to the sensor! They're not always necessary, but they can be such an awesome help for lowlight, depth of field etc...😎👍 Highly recommended ✅
Did you notice any colour cast between the three or variance in contrast? I thought I noticed some minor differences.
Oops, I saw your comments about colour tint in the description.
The Metabones and Generic have a warm tint, moreso the metabones. The Viltrox is the most neutral.
In my opinion this is a firmware issue with the viltrox, which can be fixed by an update.
thanks i love you hate how much you have to know to get this right.
Yep good analysis. Viltrox is probably the best option right now. Even used it on the BMPCC 4K, worked great!
Can’t wait to kit out my eos M!!
Should be good! I have a great vid comin up for it 😎👍
Hey Zeek, I encountered a firmware upgrade failed try again message whenever I attached a M42 Helios lens with adapter chip(M42-EF) on my EOSM+Viltrox Speedbooster. Could it be the adapter w/ chip?
I believe I've encountered this before with the Chip adapters, I removed the chip. If you don't want to do that then, possibly buying another generic adapter would be best.
@@ZeekEOSZ I'll buy another adapter no chip this time, thanks man
What about the Canon version?
Big thanks for this video! I like to use MF vintage lenses so the generic option suits me fine. Glad to hear (and see for myself) that there aren't any optical limitations with the generic. I actually went straight for an M42 to EF-M focal reducer (meaning one less adaptor in play). Really helpful video, as ever. Thanks again.
Good choice! Cheers 😉👌🍻
The price of Meta bones, at least where I found it, B&H, is now half the price. Did you mean to stay away from metabones because of that price?
Back then used to be close to $800, not sure of the price now.
What a great video! I have one question have you ever tested the commlite speed booster it's cheaper and have af/is? I cant find any comparison :(
Thanks! I have used commlite speedbooster on Sony Apsc. AF is no good, but the quality is good for the price.
@@ZeekEOSZ Thanks mate! That's very helpful info :)
Np! 👍
Thank you Zeek.
😎👍
Crazy that you answer all my questions 😂
So that’s great, no need to buy this expensive (overrated?) Metabones !!!
Metabones is very good. But for the price, the others are fine.
@@ZeekEOSZ yes, I will have to save money. I just received my helios 44m attached to the zenit EM, and I forgot the M42 adapter... lol
but for 40USD, it is very cheap and in excellent condition, the focus is very very smooth!! so great!
Awesome! Thats actually a pretty good price 🎥👌
I notice you have the speedbooster for EF-EOSM but what if you have an EOSM lens and want to speed bost it? Is there EOSM-EOSM speedboosters out there for that purpose?
No there isn't an option for that.
With FD Lens, you need FD Focal Reducer to EOS M. There are some on eBay, Pixco brand. They will work fine, not EF Speedbooster.
@@ZeekEOSZ I see, thank you!! So I will keep using my FD to EF-M adapter. Hope you are ok!!
@@yancarlos841 No problem 😎👍
Hey Zeek, I've been looking for a speedbooster for my vintage nikon lenses to the eos m but I can't find one anywhere. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to adapt so is it just sacrilegious? I've got a regular adapter on the way, but I had to ship it from china. What the heck? is there some sort of patent issue? I wouldn't care if I didn't already own nikons.
It's just an EF Mount Speedbooster to EOS M, then you place a Nikon F to EF Adapter ring in front, like stacking. 😎👍
Yes it is 😎👍
Your viltrox renders fine at f1.4, mine is crazily soft
After watching other reviews of the Viltrox most said they couldn’t get infinity focus with the Viltrox did you find this as well.
Never experienced this on any of my two Viltrox Speedboosters. Their glass must be slightly out, you can twist it back in place/position.
Cheers.
Not sure if the sigma 17-50mm will actually mount to a speedbooster being an EF-s lens. But it would become F2 and no vignette with 2.5K RAW
@@ZeekEOSZ thanks for reply, Ive found this on web: www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4348779
very interesting as I own both sigma 17-50 and tokina 11-16, Im most interested in pairing tokina glass with viltrox and ML on eosm body.
Can you tell me if my focal calculation would be correct on this tokina at 11mm:
1.6 apsc crop + 2.9 ML crop = 4.5 overall crop.
then 11mm x 4.5 crop = 49.5mm
then 49.5mm x viltrox 0.71 = 35.14mm full frame equivalent.
Would that be correct?
Thanks.
Well apparently recently we've found 2.5K 16:9 has a crop factor of 2.36x + 1.6x, so overall 3.96x Crop, so that should definitely work with the Tokina 11-16mm & Speedbooster. I use the Tokina 12-28mm and that works fine with the speedbooster and the high resolution modes.
happy with the Viltrox,
I reckon! 💰🎥👍
Thanks for helping
No problem 👍
hi Zeek, i am wondering can you get a speed booster for a canon 200d? So basically a EF to EF mount to run a speed booster? Cheers
Unfortunately not 😕
It is phisically impossible because of the flange distance, what is the same on all EOS DSLR cameras (fullframe and APS-C). So there's no space for any adapter.
Thanks again, Zeek. I've ordered the generic 42mm speed booster, I have 2 lenses to use it with. I don't suppose there is a C-Mount booster ?? I haven't found one, yet ??
Awesome 👍 Yeah there is no C Mount Speedbooster.
Thanks for this Great Video...
I want to ask a weird question 🤷🏼 Can you Adapt a speed booster on a speed booster example viltrox Ef - rf and rf - ef. Double speed boosting... I'm trying to Turn an S35 Camera into a Full Frame camera using boosters
Unfortunately not.
One speedbooster will be enough to get closer to the FF look, or even a wider lens.
@@ZeekEOSZ Yes I know this, But in a case where you have only ef mount lenses and an S35 Camera, given their are no ef - ef mount speed boosters, the closest are with ef-rf or ef-efm boosters. What will one do in these cases ☺
@@shelikaemmanuel9539
It will possibly mess up the flange distance and you might not be able to acquire focus.
@@ZeekEOSZ Oh true! I guess investing in S35 lenses or RF lenses is the only option.

Great video Zeek 👍🏽 I was going to ask, I have 3 lenses I use my eos-M with, the canon 24mm 1.4 ii 50mm 1.4 and 135mm f2 but how do I adjust them at a lower aperture? When I use them they just stay at their original aperture. I believe you can bring in more light into the sensor correct ?
What Adapter are you using?
I have Canon L Glass and they are all fine. Twist and mount back on.

Right then that should work perfectly fine. Press the info button so you see the aperture and shutter box appear in live view and then tap on the aperture box to change. Of aperture doesn't appear, it could be that you've somehow damaged the gold contacts on the Adapter.
@@ZeekEOSZ no it works now!!!!! Man this speed booster is amazing!!!! !! Loving the auto focus and face tracking almost identical to my EOS R!!! Thank you zeek!!!!
@@buck2rite1 Great!!
Hey, I checked this Pixco page, can you clear 1 thing for me? There's said "Pixco for EF", does this mean that I'll need to put EF-EF-M adapter on it in order to use EF-M lenses?
EF-m lenses are for EOS M, no adapter required. EF to EF-m, Means you can now use EF Lenses on Canon EOS M Body.
How do you connect 3 SB's as in your video title photo?
You don't connect them, just place them on top of each other.
@@ZeekEOSZ Haha that's what I thought! Could you show some results of a photo using all three like that? My guess it would be a tiny circle but I wonder if it would produce some cool macro shots as I think 3 adapters on top of each other would act as tube extensions. Anyhow love the content and channel keep doing what you do, and stay amazing!

i can't see the different of three lenses, how many stop of viltrox ibis can handle? thanks to all zeek
They're very minor it's nuts! The generic speedbooster has its obvious swirl character which I like. The Viltrox should be about four stops.
I also have the EF-S 18-135mm ....I wonder if it can be modded to be used on the EOS-M with the Viltrox booster and if it will vignette, any idea?
It can be hacked, it will vignette for sure.
would there even be any advantage to using an EF-S lens with a speedbooster as opposed to just using it with a regular cheaper EF-EFM adapter?
Hello Zeek, I have the EOS M with the Viltrox EF-EOS M2 . If I get a Helios-44M-4 with an adapter, can I use it along the Viltrox? or Should I get a Canon FD 1.4 50mm ? It would be an advantage to use the Viltrox with old lenses right? Thanks
Yes you can, you will need M42 to EF Adapter 👍

Before I see the mystery speedbooster reveal. It has pretty bad chromatic aberration with longitudinal aberrations
Yeah because the speedbooster has no electronic connection to correct the abberation. I like it though, guess it depends on the look you're trying to get across. For the clean stuff, stick with Viltrox/Metabones. Moreso the latter.
THAT GENERIC ONE IS DEFINITELY THE WINNER.. AND VILTROX IS SECOND...Metabone is not sharp at all
Metabones is better with corners and wide lenses. Viltrox distorts the sides and the generic ones makes them swirl.
4:30 good one🤣🤣
Если покупать метабонс, то только 0.64 версию
Для Blackmagic, например, BMPCC / BMMCC или GH5, есть 0,64x.
Но у меня есть 0,71x для датчика камеры APSC.
