I immediately told him about this channel and he asked me to show him the video on his phone. Needless to say, he loved the video and appreciated all of the hard work that went into it. Thank you project farm!

I am 59 when I was 17 I had a 76 trans am with a 400 engine in it . The lifters would start making a loud clattering sound. And I was told to put marvel mystery oil in my oil when I changed it, and it would literally take the sound away. So I know from experience 100% that marvel mystery oil works and it’s been around for a very long time. PS thanks for all the videos that you do. You are very informative and I greatly appreciate them.
Yeah man, I’m old school, been using MMO for 50+years. My 350 El Camino had some tapping so I had engine running controlling carb and poured MMO into carb raising idle speed, voila!, tapping stopped👍👍👍👍
I submerged my whole Toro lawnmower in a MMO treated tank. After draining all of the liquid out of the tank, I pulled out the lawnmower and it had transformed into a Honda lawnmower! Great product!!!
I had a 2000 gmc truck that had a sticky lifter.. and would make a ticking sound when started cold” I drained out half a quart of oil. Then put half a quart of mmo in it and ran it around for a day. . No more sticky lifter” then changed the oil . No more problem. I know add a couple cap fulls of it to my gas once a month and put 6 ounces in and run for a day before I change my oil” it’s a mystery that works for me

True story: I used to put MM Oil in a 1995 Toyota Camry that I had years ago. I would pour about 3/4 of it into the engine and the remaining 1/4 into the fuel tank. At one point in my life I was driving cross state lines about once every other month on weekends and during the Christmas holidays to visit my daughter back when she still a little girl in the early 2000s after I got divorced. At some point, I developed a crack in one the piston heads and the mechanic told me that even though he was amazed that I managed to break a Toyota engine, he was more surprised by how clean it was on the inside of the motor as he tore it down. He said usually he sees a lot of carbon build up but on the inside of my motor it was fairly clean with very little build up. So I give MM Oil a thumbs up!
Almost fifty years ago a mechanic told me to put 2 tbsps of MMO in the radiator, that it will extend the life of the water pump seals and gaskets. Since then, I've never had a water pump problem with any car I've owned.
I have used Marvel Mystery Oil and Sea Foam for many years (20+). My opinion is that I use both at the same time mainly in my gasoline. I take care of my equipment and it does the job for me. I look at the overall picture. If it keeps me out of the repair shop and my equipment runs great it's worth it to me. I have John Deer lawn tractors that are 30+ years old. Stihl farm boss that I purchased new in 1986 and has cut many tons of firewood. I have never had any internal engine overhauls. Am I silly for using both, maybe so. Thanks and keep all the videos coming. Ken
I learned from my father to use marvel to free up rings before putting fire (ignition) to an engine that has been sitting for a while. Used it to free up a seized ford 302 that had been sitting for over 13 years by putting in every spark plug hole and allowing to sit a few days. Next turn by hand to free up and spin with starter once it spins freely. Finally put plugs back in and smoke out the mosquitoes in the neighborhood. Compression was nice and even 150 psi.
im about to do this with a 302 volvo penta. I put engine restore and lub in the oil and it SIGNIFICANTLY changed compression. Now I will soak everything in MMO. This thing was running when I bought it
Diesel fuel through sparkplug holes is another great way of freeing up a frozen engine. Fill and walk away for a few days. It works every time. Turn it over with a socket and long bleaker bar on the front crank bolt at the harmonic ballancer. Leave the sparkplugs out and work the bleaker bar back and forth.

I've never heard of the term "hot soaking" engines before nor did I know you could put the mystery oil into the spark plug chamber. I learn a lot of new things by watching your videos and I appreciate them!
yes its common with cleaning additives. Word of caution --use only enough to get the piston covered and tilt the mower upwards (only on push mower) make sure to make a few pulls on the engine with the spark plug removed before putting the plug back in. This will prevent hydrashocking the engine.
If you remove carbon buildup from the combustion chamber that will lower the compression ratio and lower the compression reading that you get. The idea is to remove the carbon that could potentially cause pre ignition and that's what marvel did.
However, if the rings are stuck, then if MMO makes them start working again, then the compression would go up. So, unless this engine had stuck rings, I don't think MMO will increase compression.
Flat head engine designs are a bit more about Combustion chamber shapes ( which includes both the piston & the cylinder head. Vs just a bit higher or lower compression ratio. A leak down test would have been much more accurate to define ring seal, than a cranking compression test that might be effected by carbon buildup or removing of said build up. Best way to measure the engines sealing efficiency is always a Leak Down test. Professional racers leak engs much more often than doing a cranking compression test. Good video. Ive only used Marvel on older engines & flat heads. & used Seafood on later model stuff & overhead valve designs. Thats what works for us.
Compression ratio doesn't change with carbon deposits because it is a measure of MAX volume to MIN volume. As the max volume is reduced exactly as much as the min volume by carbon deposits, the ratio doesn't change. Compression testing is really measuring ring and valve seal more than it is compression ratio.
But he used two different lawn mowers...one motor had more compression than the other.....now if u find a small engine with a stuck ring..and see which one will remove more of the carbon
I never heard of Mystery Oil before until I heard it being used on a very old motor. I do use Seafoam in my vehicles but with this video, I think I am going to try Mystery Oil. It seems it did a better job cleaning the motor than Seafoam did. Very good video of comparing two major products.
My dad bought a brand new chevy pickup with 305 V8 in 1978 & used a small amount of Marvel's Mystery oil every so often, he drove it well over 20 years, & put a couple of hundred thousand miles on it, then i drove it a couple of years adding more miles, and drove it hard, when we sold it it was running quiet & smooth as a champ....
Been using mmo for years now in my 06 jetta 2.5 .i took off the valve cover to change the gasket @ 215k miles and was surprised to see how new the internals looked with no gunk buildup whatsoever
Very interesting. I cannot figure out if you used it in the motor oil. Because that would describe the cleanliness under the valve cover. That and frequent oil changes. Is that what you did? Into the oil and how much did you use?

A personal testimonial for Marvel Mystery Oil. I grew up working in a family owned and managed General Aviation FBO (Fixed Base Operation) in the Midwest. We had a certified maintenance shop, sold fuels, aircraft sales and training, aircraft rental, air charter, etc. One of our customers had a beautiful 1969 Piper Turbo Twin Comanche with 160 HP Lycoming air cooled, fuel injected 4 cylinder engines. He religiously added MMO to each fuel tank at top off and at 600 hours past TBO (Time Between Overhaul) the compression on all 8 cylinders was at the new, just broken in specification!
Lycomings were bad for valve sticking. Used to see bent pushrod tubes. MMO was a life saver. Literally. Don't want a sticking valve at 10,000 over a city
I have spent my life in aviation too, Bradford. Many years as a flight instructor them a career as an airline pilot. In the 1970s I gave a Biennial Flight Review to a man in his personal Cessna 175 Skylark. I'm sure you know what a poor maintenance reputation the Continental GO-300 in the 175 had. The owner told me that he did frequent oil analysis tests because of the poor reputation of the engine. At first the analysis tests reported concerning metal content, but an "old" A&P recommended 10% MMO in the engine oil. He claimed that all oil tests after beginning to use MMO reported no concerning levels of metal. I have been using 10% MMO in my car engines since. My 1999 Jeep Cherokee, with the 4.0L 6cyl (a bulletproof engine anyway), last September (2018) pulled a 3600 lb trailer 2000 miles at highway speeds from MN to into mountainous AZ with no issue, and averaging 15.1 mpg. The odometer turned over 252,000 miles as I backed the trailer into my garage. Since that Biennial Flight Review, all of my vehicles have easily exceeded 200K, and I credit it to two things: MMO and Castrol Synthetic oils.
@@WGVanDyck WOW! That's impressive, I think I'll give it a shot in my 2013 Kia Forte, runs great no issues 85K miles. Guess 10% MMO every oil change can't hurt:)
Marvel Mystery Oil works wonders! I have been using it on my 2003 Acura MDX Tech since I was 16. 5 years later at 260,000 miles, the engine purs and runs flawlessly. I have also been getting fairly clear oil at changes! Clearer than when I had bought the MDX at 110k miles!
I've been going back and watching a bunch of your earlier videos, and I think this is the one where your million dollar tag line was born. "Let's find out"! BRILLIANT!

In 1999, I found a 73 Chevy Travelmate R.V. Sat 15 years the owner said. He said he would sell it for $500 if I could get it running. I poured MMO down each spark plugs well and let it stand for 2 weeks. She fired up. Ran beautifully. Love that Marvel Mystery Oil.
Pretty much the same story, a car sat in a Field for 13 years, get it running at its yours. Pulled all the plugs, squirted mmo down each cylinder with plugs out put a new battery in and changed the oil and filter. Cranked the engine over without the plugs in which spat out all the mmo in the cylinders. Put plugs back in and with new gas in the tank I cranked it up and drove it away. I now use about 2 graduations on a bottle of mmo every 3 to 4 fill ups in my gas tank and the spark plugs come out the prettiest light tan you would ever want to see on a spark plug.
I was surprised. I use both products and I just figured the SeaFoam would out perform the "old" Marvel Mystery Oil but to my eyes it did as well if not better for WAY cheaper. Great Test!
You used a different type of spark plug with the Seafoam than you did with the Marvel Mystery Oil but I believe from what I can see that the Marvel mystery oil did a better job decarbonizing the top of the piston and the valves than the Seafoam did. Probably 16 years or more ago this girlfriend that I had she drove a Honda Prelude and it had a cracked cylinder head when I met her and I opened it up slightly with a cut off wheel on a Dremel and then I pushed JB Weld in with a syringe and then I smoothed it all out after it hardened and reinstalled the cylinder head she drove it for another 5 1/2 years after that and she did not retire the car because of any problems with the cylinder head or engine but just wanted to get another car and sold that car that did not smoke!

Mystery oil wins! Thanks for spending so much time to do these demonstrations! Some are a lot of great info, some are just cool to see what's going to happen!!
It's so hard to say, is X better than Y or Z. Each have their own characteristics. It did seem that the MMM resulted with a "dryer" surface, but it didn't remove the flaky scale left behind- whereas Seafoam seemed to "wash" the surfaces, but left them wet looking. Both products are better when used in oil AND fuel together, and given time to work. One test with any product isn't really going to do much, or give drastic results to show. I still stand by my original method of a 1-1.5 quart replacement of 50-50 ATF/Acetone in fuel and oil, run about an hour at high idle- for a real "engine wash" (for cars/trucks). Your videos are very enjoyable, and educational; you can let children watch, without fear of language or dangerous practices or procedures, and have a real discussion and learning experience. Thank you very much, and we look forward to more content from you.

Interesting test. Actually I have used both products Marvel Mystery Oil for a much longer period of time (35+years). I mix and have been for nearly all that time MMO in my gas can when I fill it. I’ll also add a small amount to my fuel tank at various times of the season but I definitely use it directly in the fuel tank on every single piece of equipment in my shed. Chain saws, lawn mowers, string trimmers, generator, even my Super A Farmall. All of them. Never thought about the combustion deposits! I started using it to keep diaphragms and seals soft in my 2 cycle engines. Starting problems go away. I have a leaf blower and a chainsaw I purchased in 1993. Never opened the carburetor up. I still use them all year round. It’s just really good stuff!
@@danholman5282 Yes that is correct. In my opinion (for whatever it’s worth) the marvel mystery oil keeps the diaphragms and other rubber components soft and pliable. Occasionally Ill get a little heavy and get some smoke but it’s never caused a problem of any sort.
Agreed... After reading on the Marvel label that it was effective at stabilizing fuel for winter storage.. I tried it in both my lawnmower and motorcycle. Works fantastic at keeping carbs from gumming up during storage periods...
marvel mystery oil has a decent amount of naptha in it, naptha cleans paint brushes and is a solvent , and why marvel mystery oil is good in mower , weedeater etc gas to preserve carbs that sit with gas in them ,it slows varnish residue of gas from ruining carb parts . about 1/2 ounce to a tank full ,run it for a couple minutes and then turn it off .
I have run them together in the gas tank of my 93 Buick Roadmaster. I took a 350 mile road trip after filling the tank and adding half bottle of each and I only burned a half tank. On the way back I used straight gasoline and went almost to empty.
Marvel Mystery Oil was a must have in the 100LL fuel in my aircraft. It top end lubricates wonderfully. Just don't add too much because it does lower the fuel octane. Each wing tank was 70 gallons usable fuel and I would add one ounce per gallon. It at least doubled the life of my intake valves and lifters. Cold weather operations improved greatly. Gasoline is a solvent.
I did see the review were a governmental agency linked mmo to a crash. A one time event linkage does not seem like good science to me and mmo does have a history of aircraft usage back to WWII. You are spot on saying that it is forbidden by government and manufactures in aircraft, it is also deemed not necessary by automotive manufactures. None of that means to me that it does not work.
@@perrydickerson9055 Gasoline is a solvent. All gasoline internal combustion engines need top end lubrication. I also run Alcor TCP to eliminate exhaust carbon buildup.
I have been using MMO for decades in my mowers vehicles and even my 97 Ford F350 powerstroke 7.3 liter. All have been running great for years. I add it to my gas tanks every fill up and my mower gas cans. I even use it for my two stroke chainsaws and weed wackers. I swear by it. This was passed down to me by my uncles who were mechanics since the 1950's.
I have an 01 7.3, hard to start when cool I put new glow plugs relay etc, would this help oil side of the injectors? Buzz test confirms stiction, I am not rebuilding till it acts up after warming up then I will, I'm afraid it will hurt the 7.3 because of its hue fuel management system
skidoo ck3 run ARCHOIL 9100 for power strokes. It takes 16 ounces every oil change. 200 miles of driving and it will make a huge difference! I put ARCHOIL 9100 on every oil change I do on my ‘97 7.3. They have a lot of happy customers. You be amazed how fast they start in the winter l!
I just subscribed,, due to the effort put into comparing. I am literally sitting in a Target, deciding because they don't carry MMO, only Seafoam. Your test and the comments helped me to decide what I already know. Go with the MMO.
I think that MMO is made for repeated use in order to get the best results. I use it in all my power equipment fuel (mixed as directed for auto fuel, and mostly a bit heavy for lawnmower, trimmer, chainsaw, blower and generators) and I have had ZERO issues for almost 20 years. When my trimmer quit working (magneto issue) after 9 years, I took it apart and it was as clean as a new one inside. I have used MMO to clean up neighbor's lawnmower carburetors from a year of gumming up from them using 10% ethanol gasoline (which I would recommend to anyone never to use in power equipment) by mixing MMO heavy with fresh non-ethanol fuel and running it through the carbs for an hour. Both lawnmowers have been fine after cleanup process was done. I have used seafoam, as directed, on one truck engine (ford 5.4L) after buying it used, and it "seemed" to run better after using it. Although I have nothing against seafoam, it tends to be more of an expensive additive. Not that I am against Seafoam, I use MMO because I can get it for $3.88 at Walmart and because I have 19 years of consistent performance from using MMO. Marvel claims that MMO stabilizes gasoline, and I have gone two years with MMO in gasoline, in my chainsaw without starting it, and when I did finally get around to using it, it started on the second pull. Just my 2 cents opinion folks.
It's a great product. There are very few products around, of any kind at all really, that can say they've been successful for 100 years. The price for MMO is a mystery in itself. What a fantastic company just for keeping the cost down. We used to put a few drops on the handles of our foosball table because after awhile they wouldn't spin good but even just a couple drops of MMO makes them spin freely as if there is no resistance at all. Really amazing stuff!
@@puppygadget3189 No No, you wouldn't want to do that. MMO is mixed at 1 ounce to 2 1/2 gallons of gas. Way, way to little to lubicate a 2 cycle engine. I use a good quality 2 stroke oil mixed at what ever the manufacturer of the equipment I'm using it in recommends, 40-1,50-1 etc. Then I add the MMO. Remember a 1 gallon jug of gas would get a little less than a 1/2 ounce of MMO. I also add Sta-bil to prevent it from going bad if I don't use it for some time. One more thing. Try to find a service station that has non ethanol gas. Google it. I have 2 with in a few miles of my house. Well worth the extra cost and trouble for small air-cooled engines.
@@rogercarrico4975 Thank you-yes I use alcohol free gas from this casino gas station close to my house. Seems to run cooler and better with that gas also plus no carb problems.
Mechanics used mystery oil in their air tools, at least in all the diesel shops I worked in. Worked great. Some guys made up their own concoction of mystery oil and something else of their choice.
I've been a Mystery Oil man since the early 1970s. It's always helped my engines run smoothly with good compression and low carbon buildup. I've never tried Seafosm, but it looks like a good product, too. Thanks for the thorough comparison.
I see a lot of guys using the Marvel Mystery Oil to soak seized engines that have sat for years on end and it actually work extremely well. I've never really seen anyone use seafoam to soak engine blocks that are seized up. I think they both serve their purpose based on the job.
I really enjoy watching your videos, you do a phenomenal work editing, testing and explaining . You look very sincere and polite. Please keep up the great work.
According to your numbers MMO is 4 times cheaper. 1/2 the price for 2x the product, Furthermore, according to MMO's website, you use 4 oz of MMO in 10 gallons of gasoline. They don't recommend adding more than that. On the other hand, Seafoam suggests 1 oz per gallon, or 10 oz per 10 gallon. It also says you can use up to 2 oz per gallon. Sounds like they basically want you to just dump the whole bottle in effectively. That means you need to put in 2.5x as much seafoam. Which means MMO is 10 times cheaper!
john handcock, as far back as the 80s, Marvel used to have directions on the can (back when you could still get it in a can) for long-term fuel storage, and it was recommended to mix one ounce per gallon if your vehicle or tank was going to be sitting for a while. Kind of like Sta-Bil, but much cheaper. I've mixed as much as 2 ounces per gallon and have not had any issues doing so. But yeah, the recommended dose is 4 oz per 10 gallon tank.
The base of all of these products is some form of naptha and sometimes turpentine or its petroleoum equivalent. In general you cannot hurt the engine or the sensors by using more than the recommended amount. The point however is that there is nothing that makes one of the products better than the other. Walmart has Seafoam, Gumout and its own product right next to each other arranged by price. There is no difference between the three in terms of what they will do. The same for gas additives intended to clean fuel systems. Probably, two or three bottles of some dollar store additive with do the same thing as a much more expensive product though you may have to go off label. Mystery Oil will work as well as a gasoline additive in a stored avehicle as the much more expensive Stabil. If you have to store a vehicle the best thing to do is have the tank low when you park it, throw in a couple of gallons of fresh gas when you start it, and go fill up at a nearby gas station. You can put in a storage additive if you wish but it probably will make little difference. I once helped a friend start up an vehicle that has been stored for years and it ran. It was never driven again but it would have made it to the gas station across the street if that had been the intention.
Wish car talk was still around to interview you. I really think you and Tom would have done great work together on all his MG's. Keep up the good work.

Your videos are always very informative and done in an engaging and interesting way. I've used both Seafoam and Marvel Mystery oils but I didn't realize MMO could be used in such a way. I think it won the contest as far as removing carbon deposits although Seafoam did pretty good.

I add a quart of Marvel Mystery oil to engine oil when changing oil and 4oz. to fuel. The engine , a 81 Ford 300 inline 6cyl. with 108 K mis. was going into another truck a 69 f-100, but before installing l decided to open up engine on top and bottom to see the rockers and crank area. I was amazed at how clean it was. Stunned is more like it. I have pics. of it, cause it had a shining gold - yellow look that made it look like it was brand new .That was 8 years ago and the engine still is running fantastic, smooth. I pull a trailer loaded with two mowers , l'm convinced of Marvel Mystery oil claim of keeping an engine clean of sludge is true. I started to use MM OIL back in the 70s, but had never seen the end results. It really works. Thanks Project Farm, for all your hard work, very accurate and informative videos.
Ford 300 straight 6 is one of the best ever the truck would rust off the frame before the motor went bad you probably could have ran it for 8 more years without oil lol
You are making the oil way too thin and are damaging your engine. You shouldn’t add that much to oil . MMO lowers viscosity and makes less protective layer on metal. MMO is best in fuel. NOT OIL. Take it from a mechanic who’s had his share of horror stories from mmo in the crankcase.
@@Wildanimal864. I too am a mechanic, retired after 35 years. I'm still driving the 69 f-100 with the same motor, the 300 inline 6. It still runs great, doesn't burn oil, ( in over 10 years l've added only 1/2 quart,) the C6 trans. Leaks a drop every once in a while. I lost track of the mileage on the engine. So MMO hasn't hurt this motor. And l've done some heavy hauling too. I've been using MMO since the 70s and l've never had any problems. In fact the motor ran even smoother after l put it in the first time. You must have heard stories about other engines or seen them. The Ford 300 in line 6 is one tough animal. Some people call it the small diesel with sparkpugs. It's a very torqui motor. But thanks for your advice. God bless.
TreesOnTheBeach I agree mmo did better! Can’t understand the compression test. How does an engine get less compression after treatment? That implies mmo is hurting the engine. The pictures don’t confirm that
@@sweetwilliam49 I think it would depend on what the goal is and what "normal" for the engine is. Uneducated/semi-educated opinion: Assuming both products improved the performance of the engine, raising compression would seem to be from freeing up something like a ring or lifter that has trouble moving, or getting deposits off exhaust ports to complete a lifter seal. Lowering compression would seem to be from cleaning off deposits from the faces of surfaces and leaving more room in the combustion chamber. Since there is now more room the fuel mix is not compressed as much meaning of course less compression.
Ian S I can agree with that assumption, that would imply that the engine was working with no loss of compression before the treatment. I guess it could also be assumed the cylinder would have more space to draw in air to increase volume and therefore more compression
I'm impressed with the results of the Marvel Mystery oil. I wonder if the compression went down because it did such a good job of removing the carbon? Carbon buildup increases compression, so maybe compression went down because it cleaned it off so well? I think so. I've been using MMM for over 40 years. It's great stuff. For my money, it's MMM! 😁
I've used Marvel Mystery Oil(MMO) since 1967 when my grandfather introduced me to it. I have had much better results than you showed by giving it more time. I used to do the dump it down the carb but over the past 20 years I went to just putting it in the gas. I picked up a minivan 20 years ago that smoked a little and had low compression in a cylinder, it was a 4 cylinder engine. I put MMO in the gas at every fill up and used the van for going to work. That was about 50 mile round trip 5 or 6 days per week. After several months, it didn't smoke anymore and ran smoother. At about 6 months I did a big service on it the compression on all cylinders was good now. I did a 283 in 1970 where I did the MMO down the carb until the engine stalled. I let it sit for several days and then started it. It smoked like a Uniroyal stack for a while. I pulled and disassembled the engine. Most carbon was gone but the rings were stuck in the pistons. After running another engine with MMO for several months, the rings were free when I disassembled it. I put MMO in the gas of all my machines and believe that it really hepls. It also seems to prevent corrosion in the fuel systems. Very good video. I hope that you are picking up those mowers for free. Good Luck, Rick
@@k5ren There was a Uniroyal factory in our county. When I was a kid in the 50s and 60s, "smokes like a Uniroyal stack" was a catch phrase and an insult to other guys cars.
I’ve been in the automotive industry all my life and retired a year and half ago. Some products I have used have proven time and again to just plainly work. Like MMO, Rislone is one of them I have seen proven results. Rislone, MMO of ATF have all been used time and again successfully from the old timers. 1st time I was exposed to Rislone by my mentor at a Ferrari dealership in Hollywood, Ca., a Ferrari Daytona 365 V12 was towed in with a bad hard starting complaint and lack of power. After numerous test for ignition and fuel we found a lot of blow by from the crankcase breather. We also verified a low compression across all cylinders with a follow up leak down loss from piston rings 20/30 %. My mentor Mr. Samps requested to contact the customer for an authorization to decarbonize the engine using Rislone. The process was relatively simple considering a very expensive alternative of an engine tear down and re-ringing job. We added a quart of Rislone to the crankcase, finally got the engine started after numerous attempts using a battery booster, then up to normal operating temperature. The next step was removing all the spark plugs while the engine was hot. Samps got a squirt can and 5 to 6 pumps on each cylinder later while tapping the starter motor. We let the engine sat over the weekend. The following week we placed rags on top of the spark plug holes and crank the engine over to bow as much of the excess Rislone out of the cylinders. Next we installed the plugs and fired the engine off. Yeah, it did smoke for a while obviously. A few wraps from the throttle later the smoke finally cleared and we checked the crankcase fumes to verify results. Indeed it was reduced to almost non existent. We verified success a few consecutive days later that it was a solid and successful repair. Leakdown afterwards was a marginal 6/8%. Wow...Now I swear by Rislone and it has never let me down. I use it often, a 1/2 quart at oil change intervals have kept my engines running in tip top shape. Something to keep in mind: 1 . Engines will always accumulate a certain amount of carbon from both fuel and oil. 2. Carbon will always find itself into the ring lands causing rings to stick, reducing their primary function and efficiency. 3. That will bring in burnt gasses from the crankcase reducing the incoming air/fuel charge. 4. Hard starting, lack of power and high oil consumption will be the result of sticky rings.
@@dontlookback0564 we usto dump ATF straight down the carburetor with the engine running at full THROTTLE yes it would smoke and die then we would let it sit over night in the morning restart and the compression would return
@pieces of8t ive used it in cat engines for years until the red dye rule on off road fuel.Still works but not worth the risk in class 8 motors where the fuel is subject to test by the tax man. There used to be undyed atf but cant find it now
Had an '82 VW air cooled van that from time to time had sticky valves. All I had to do was add some Rislone and that was it no sticky valves and quiet as can be.
I've had good experiences with both products. Been an ASE Master mechanic for 30+years. It does appear that both products worked about equally well. Keep in mind that this was a "quick-treatment" not a sustained, 6 months or more usage. Marvel oil very effective when added in the proper ratio to the fuel. Though I believe seefoam also works similarly. It's been a while since I've needed either product.
Good test. Thanks. Marvel Mystery Oil seems to work even better used gently over the long term. A little "glug" in the crankcase oil every oil change. A little "glug" in the fuel tank every fill up. No need to get aggressive with the stuff like substituting 25% of the crankcase oil with MMO no matter what the directions on the bottle say. Just a few ounces used regularly does the job.
MMO, is for long term use, use it [in the gas] for ten years from big dog k9 chopper to lexus, and my 06 f150. all so protects fuel system from ethanol
I agree! Used marvel for years in my ‘84 Honda 200s 3wheeler. It still runs like new and I’ve used it in my 06’ expedition with over 400,000 on the odometer and only had to replace coil packs as needed. My 02’ Land Rover disco has almost 300,000 on it and never had to do anything but general maintenances. Marvel mystery oil is tops in my book!!!
I use 4-oz/qt in the oil and 2-3 oz in the gas/8-10 gal. I found that after about two tanks of gas, less (1/2) MMO is all you need. MMO works well and is fairly cheap to use, forget about engine flush and injector cleaner.
Hello! I appreciate your video, very coincidental; as I went to Walmart today and was going to purchase another bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil and they were totally out. I learned about this product years ago from an older gentleman who had made a career out of fixing and working on boats and he had it. You really paid close attention to detail. It was quite comical watching you. I really wanted to see the results. I couldn't believe the difference. If you didn't have them side by side, it wouldn't have been as obvious. Marvel Mystery Oil was much cleaner by comparison. I ended up buying the Sea Foam as a gas additive. I'm sold I may return the Seafoam and get 2 bottles of Marvel. Thanks! for all your hard work in making and videoing your amazing experiment.
This is a real tough one to judge. The mystery oil did a great job and seemed to edge out the sea foam. I may have to switch products after watching this one, not sure how i missed this video!!
Still drive my 99' F350 7.3 4x4 dually w/over 400k miles & have consistently been using MMO in every 3rd-4th refueling. Enjoyed the video comparison, have seen Seafoam just never cared to change old habit.
I have that same truck. Been using Lucas fuel treatment in it for about seven years. Engine runs great. I’m open to using MMO or SeaFoam, but, it seems that this test was inconclusive.
Thank you I have a 5.3 in a 2000 suburban Chevy It had 2 stuck lifters, after experimenting for about 2 years with different additives, I think I should try some of that MARVELOUS MYSTERY OIL, I got one lifter free. , so maybe that oil treatment might do some good. I don't drive the suburban, it is in storage,I do experiment with it! I was thinking about using compressed air down the rocker arm through the push rod to the lifter .you have to pull the heads to get to the lifters. I do not want to go there! YOU have inspired me to try the mystery oil. I am retired and 81 and a half and I love what you do! THANK YOU FOR A WONDERFUL SHOW YOU ARE AN INSPiRATION, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! scientice and genius all rolled into one man. THANKS AGAIN AND GOD BLESS! I LOVE YOUR SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Most of the engine cleaners back in the day were nothing but Kerosene. Try anywhere from a half quart to a quart before the next oil change. drain the oil level down a quart and add it before the next oil change. Run it until it's hot should be enough. Doesn't take long, but if that doesn't do it let it sit overnight and try running for 20 minutes the next morning, then let it sit a few hours and try again. If that doesn't do it, time to change a lifter. And on that motor, I think the lifters can come out with removing the intake manifold only, not the heads.
Great job! I recently did the same test using Seafoam and Marvel Mystery oil. And I can say the combination of the 2 did the trick. As for which one did better, they both excelled in different areas. $ wise I have to give it to MMO! Keep up the great work.
You could use (sorry this is kind of a weird suggestion) an enema bag with a stopcock to very accurately control the rate that fluid is added. I work in healthcare and we have more tools at our disposal, like IV tubing with roller clamps, dial-a-flows, and of course, IV pumps, but the closest thing I could think of that's available over the counter is an enema bag
Good basic demo. MMO in my opinion for last 45-50 yrs has been reliable. Ive cleaned many old engines up and still use it today on my lawn equipment. Thanks!
First time I used Marvel M.O. I WAS 16 MY K-5 blazer needed new plugs badly. My mom stopped at the local parts store and the guy sold her a big can on MARVEL M. O. She said just add it to your gas, so I did the whole can to maybe 10 gallons of gas.Got down the road about Quarter mile and BOOM!! Right out my dual exhaust Big black cloud of smoke.like I was rolling coal out of a 350v8! K-5 ran better Then when I bought it after that.Never did have to change them plugs.SORRY GUYS JUST REMEMBERING SOME GOOD MEMORIES!
im sorry but i just need to point this out, you said "rolling coal out a 350v8" a 350 is a Chevy GAS motor and therefore should never roll coal, only time an engine should ever smoke is if its a diesel with the emissions systems removed.
Connor Lynden he was using the term rolling coal just as a figure of speech describing that the MMO had just cleaned the shit out of his engine and made it run like a scolded dog .
Todd, thank you so much for your time, testing, quality, and integrity. You've helped me make better choices and overturn paid enforcement I've accepted and family lore I've used. My request for testing would be oil filters, if I could humbly request something.
I've been using Seafoam for 25 years or more and swear by it. I use it for a fuel stabilizer for all my small engines during the off season (lawn mowers, chain saw, snowblower, etc.) and it jjust plain works. My engines start and run like new and I never have to clean carburators. I also run it thru all my engines every so often to keep the injectors clean and running smooth. Can't beat it. I try to always buy several cans when it's on sale.
I swear by Marvel's mystery oil. My father used it In everything used in the fuel and in the oil. He also used it In his air tools, and I am ASE certified master auto technician and I swear by Marvel's mystery oil. It works wonders
this video isn't working for me, I just got a used dodge charger with 34000 miles, I want to clean it and put good oil in it, I'm thinking purple royal and marvel, if I'm putting 6 qts of PR , should I use less and add the marvel, can I leave in the marvel for 3000 miles and change the oil then or is that too long. Im educating myself on how to take care of my engine I want to keep the car as long as possible, any help would be great!
What I would do is put the MMO in with some conventional motor oil And the gas At first, just because it's cheaper After driving a couple thousand miles Drain the oil And change filter Just because MMO Will clean a lot of the varnish deposits along with carbon deposits . It's kind of starting over with a clean slate. Then I would put the Royal purple in I use mobil one Personally, but that is just my personal preference MMO has a lot of detergents in it and will work wonders. You will be amazed! And if you put synthetic motor oil in you can go further than the recommended 3000 miles with conventional oil just read the directions for best results on the synthetic motor oil, but you can also refer to your owners manual - but most of them. Recommendations are with conventional motor oils, not any kind of synthetics -
Oh ok so if I use synthetic the marvel could stay in there aslong as the interval I choose to change the oil itself? And do you mean put the MMO in the gas tank too? I read some people do that, I Read some do it with the transmission, I want to actually change my transmission oil and also put RP in it but think changing the transmission fluid this early would void my warranty but I wonder if they would have any way of knowing when I changed it? I got some whistling going on the engine on the passenger side and I'm already slightly regretting the used car purchase its only 3 days in..
I personally have never put it in a transmission I wouldn't recommend it transmission fluid itself is a detergent-based oil but I would not recommennd it, but yes, put it in the fuel and in the oil
I have been MMO in all my fuels for years, all my yard tools, tractors both gas/diesel, our vehicles, All fuels. I find everything runs smoother, cooler over time, and better mileage.
I've used marvel in the gas tank on ever fill up for a year now on my 09 6.2L V8 and my fuel economy is better then wen I bought the truck so I stand behind marvel mystery oil I've also used it in the gas and oil of my atv for years with nothing but good results... thank you for every video you've done and everything to come I got one really appreciate your time and effort! 🥃cheers🍻
Yes it is I use it in my 09 Sierra Denali on every fill up and with every oil change ! It works wonders and has never done me wrong hope this helps and good luck. 🥃Cheers🍻

I have been using both product for years. I believe that MMO gives more bang for the buck! Sea foam works great in the oil for freeing up a sticky lifter on my twin cylinder Koehler engine . I actually mix both products together in my gas can. Great video, thank you!
Just recently started running MMO with oil and gas. I can definitely tell a difference. My 03 F150 4.6L with 200k is super smooth now. I noticed an immediate difference as soon as I started using it.
Well that is a tough one, one 1980 dodge with a 318, one hard clicking lifter, one granddad with a can of marvel , poured directly into crank case, no more clicking. I was impressed. I have seen sea foam work miracles with some engines also. I use both products just depends what the problem is. Good test. Thanks

How is everyone saying MMO wins?? Because its cleaner?? Seafoam actually INCREASED THE COMPRESSION!! Am I the only one seeing the graphic at the end - 8:55. I do love this guy! I love when he says "For my next video, Im going to be testing - " and whips out the JB Weld! hahaha - he is the hero of every man with a garage!
I have been using Marvell Mystery oil for over 40 years. I use some in the fuel tank as a fuel injector cleaner and lube. When I used to drag race I used it in a supercharged engine that ran on alcohol to lube the injection system o-rings.Alcohol dries out rubber products like o-rings. The Marvell Mystery oil product is very good. I think it was used a lot in engines back in the day before they used hardened valve seats?
Great test! I have often wondered what each of these does? Guess we will never see a perfectly clean engine inside, but in any case, we do what we can to take care of our equipment!
I keep a store of both right next to each other on the shelf. Each has a use on certain engines. Using the Seafoam for cleaning a dirty engine and then the MMO for maintaining. Friends think I am just a spectacular mechanic because of the miracles I perform on engines. I just let them believe and use two very good products. It's really a great pair to draw to.
as a car guy, i just have to say that it is SO convenient to see almost every major additive, oil, tools, and etc instead of having to find multiple people's videos. also gotta compliment the tedious testing to make a fair comparison. thank you for your effort.

This thing was running when I bought it
I’ve put MMO in a seized jetski motor and let it sit for 24 hours and then was able to turn it by hand.
I watch another channel on yt called Jennings motor sports. That guy uses Marv mystery oil for that same purpose. The guy has a good channel.
ATF works pretty good too. I prefer wiping engines down with ATF if they are going to be on the engine stand for awhile. No rust or scale.
I’m a mechanic and believe me when I say this channel is a major resource for me to learn more and enjoy.
Thank you sir and happy Ramadan.

yes its common with cleaning additives.

Pretty much exactly what I posted just now before reading your comment. Glad to see there's somebody here that knows what they're talking about.
It's fun seeing these old videos and how confident he's got in front of the camera since then.
I never heard of Mystery Oil before until I heard it being used on a very old motor. I do use Seafoam in my vehicles but with this video, I think I am going to try Mystery Oil. It seems it did a better job cleaning the motor than Seafoam did. Very good video of comparing two major products.
Thanks! Thanks for sharing.

Marvel mystery oil worked for me i been using it since 1952 in my cars. You can add it to your motor oil for upper cylinder lubrication.
Been using mmo for years now in my 06 jetta 2.5 .i took off the valve cover to change the gasket @ 215k miles and was surprised to see how new the internals looked with no gunk buildup whatsoever
Impressive!
Very interesting. I cannot figure out if you used it in the motor oil. Because that would describe the cleanliness under the valve cover.
That and frequent oil changes.
Is that what you did? Into the oil and how much did you use?
How often you use it?

Thank you!
That's why the germans hated it in ww2

Marvel Mystery Oil works wonders!
I have been using it on my 2003 Acura MDX Tech since I was 16.

Clearer than when I had bought the MDX at 110k miles!

Wow! MMO is a great product!

kelly sargent is that a true story.

I thought MM oil looking at the engine.
Pretty sure that was the exhaust valve (exhaust is usually smaller than intake) but ya, clean as a whistle!

Is the MMO in addition to the recommended 2cycle treatment?
@@danholman5282
Yes that is correct.
From my point of view, looks like Marvel mystery erl is the best cleaner, and sea foam is the compression restorer. I'll run a mix of both! :D

_"Marvel Mystery Oil was a must have in the 100LL fuel in my aircraft."_
That's illegal in certified aircraft.

Thanks for watching and subscribing! Glad I could help!
Thank you
It's a great product.
Do you use a 2 stroke oil also in your chainsaw or just add MMO to the gas?

According to your numbers MMO is 4 times cheaper. 1/2 the price for 2x the product,
Furthermore, according to MMO's website, you use 4 oz of MMO in 10 gallons of gasoline.
MMO is a great product!
john handcock, as far back as the 80s, Marvel used to have directions on the can (back when you could still get it in a can) for long-term fuel storage, and it was recommended to mix one ounce per gallon if your vehicle or tank was going to be sitting for a while. Kind of like Sta-Bil, but much cheaper. I've mixed as much as 2 ounces per gallon and have not had any issues doing so. But yeah, the recommended dose is 4 oz per 10 gallon tank.
Good catch!
Anonymike you want a full tank of gas. Low fuel leaves room for condensation to build inside the tank.

I have pics. of it, cause it had a shining gold - yellow look that made it look like it was brand new .That was 8 years ago and the engine still is running fantastic, smooth. Ford 300 straight 6 is one of the best ever the truck would rust off the frame before the motor went bad you probably could have ran it for 8 more years without oil lol
Ford 300 inline 6 will run with or without oil. Easy half million miles
Thanks for commenting on this.
Totally agree

Same thought process I used as well after seeing how much cleaner MMO in the after photos.
Yes, I thought the same thing also. Removing the carbon, increased the cylinder's volume a tiny bit, hence slightly less compression.
Same thought when I saw the slight decrease. It seems to have done a bit better cleaning, especially on the cylinder head.
That’s must likely what happened. A more accurate measurement would have been to know the actual compression when the motor was new.
Good point!!
Thank you. Thanks for sharing!
Mmo probably cleaned the sludge off the oil and compression rings
"Smoked like a Uniroyal stack"
Very descriptive Richard! I get a perfect picture of it, and i can even smell it!
Impressive results! I enjoyed reading your comment. Thank you
Great
@@dontlookback0564 we usto dump ATF straight down the carburetor with the engine running at full THROTTLE yes it would smoke and die then we would let it sit over night in the morning restart and the compression would return
Thanks for the feedback.
Militec-1 ? Haven't heard of it before. I'll look into it.
Seafoam lost this one. I will be trying that mystery oil👍🏽👍🏽
MMO is a great product that delivers results. Thank you
Yeah but seafoam didn't loose compression so
@@warrenfogleman9962 so mystery oil does?
@@GDBAKED81 yes actually look at the charts
Im thinking the MMO cleaned the cylinder so much better that there was slightly more volume, hence the slight drop in compression. Jmho
Good test.
MMO is a great product. Thanks for commenting!
A glug here and a glug there, everywhere a glug glug.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much! Thanks for sharing.
Internet home made videos are putting tv programs to shame
Those 2000 suburbans are the best
Great job! I recently did the same test using Seafoam and Marvel Mystery oil. And I can say the combination of the 2 did the trick. As for which one did better, they both excelled in different areas. $ wise I have to give it to MMO!
Keep up the great work.
Thank you!
Thanks for the feedback.
Same here! Frikkin awesome.
i have at least half dozen enema bags at home. they also work great for enemas!
Good basic demo. MMO in my opinion for last 45-50 yrs has been reliable. Ive cleaned many old engines up and still use it today on my lawn equipment. Thanks!
MMO is a great product. Thank you!
IGOTAJOP America
I just added some Marvel mystery oil to my Vans engine which is japanese toyota .it gave my engine some more power .marvel mystery oil does the trick
BAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
im sorry but i just need to point this out, you said "rolling coal out a 350v8" a 350 is a Chevy GAS motor and therefore should never roll coal, only time an engine should ever smoke is if its a diesel with the emissions systems removed.
Thanks so much! Thanks for the video idea.
Thanks for sharing!
It's Amazing 👏 STUFF. 🌊 🦭 FOAM
I pour mmo in my 2003 ranger gas tank. Runs like a dream at 210k miles.
Impressive!
Started using Marvel Mystery Oil since 1978. It has cleanup a lot of old engines. Seaform is good but MMO is by far my choice.
MMO is a great product. Thanks for commenting!
Me I'm using only water. But not all you just spray little by little until the 1 glass of water is gone. And it has some pretty good results
Hook a water bottle into your vacuum intake on your manifold and take your car/truck for a long drive.
I personally think 2% milk has much better results than water. It cleans up crank shafts real nice.
That's inside the oil of course. 40% milk and 60% 75W-90 gear oil. It works wonders. Never tried it in gas though. Maybe I should!
I swear by Marvel's mystery oil. My father used it In everything used in the fuel and in the oil. He also used it In his air tools, and I am ASE certified master auto technician and I swear by Marvel's mystery oil. It works wonders
MMO is a great product! Thanks for commenting.
this video isn't working for me, I just got a used dodge charger with 34000 miles, I want to clean it and put good oil in it, I'm thinking purple royal and marvel, if I'm putting 6 qts of PR , should I use less and add the marvel, can I leave in the marvel for 3000 miles and change the oil then or is that too long.
You are the best at replying to your viewers out of all the TH-camrs. Just wanna thank you for being awesome.
Thanks so much!
I have been MMO in all my fuels for years, all my yard tools, tractors both gas/diesel, our vehicles, All fuels. I find everything runs smoother, cooler over time, and better mileage.
MMO is a terrific product!
not sure what video everybody else just watched but in my opinion mmo won that great job with the videos ill keep watching for sure. also thanks.
It's a great product! Thanks for watching the video and commenting!
Yea looks like MMO won to me.
🥃cheers🍻
Thank you
So is MMO just like Seafoam you can pour it in the fuel tank and in the motor oil as well??🤔 I gotta go look at this then for my 94 4runner.🤔👍🏾
Yes it is I use it in my 09 Sierra Denali on every fill up and with every oil change ! It works wonders and has never done me wrong hope this helps and good luck.
🥃Cheers🍻
My compliments on how well your channel has grown and how you have grown in knowledge and in the sophistication in your testing! Congratulations I always enjoy your content!

You should give the alternative media a go, their premise is not be beholden to advertisers, political interests, secret societies, banks etc..
@@android584 Some of them are good, but some of them are controlled opposition, or not well researched enough.
While not perfect, I recommend The Corbett Report and Corbett Report Extras. James (Corbett) does not align with either the "left" nor the "right"and is fairly objective, and very methodical and holistic in his research. His documentary on the Federal Reserve is probably the best there is on the subject.

I have been using both product for years. I believe that MMO gives more bang for the buck! Sea foam works great in the oil for freeing up a sticky lifter on my twin cylinder Koehler engine . I actually mix both products together in my gas can. Great video, thank you!
Im currently trying to find the best stuff to help a ticking lifter ... Was gonna run MMO in the next oil change . You like seafoam better ?
So do i.
How did you get a sticky lifter on an engine that doesn't have hydraulic lifters? Better go back to school before entering bogus opinions.
Just recently started running MMO with oil and gas. I can definitely tell a difference. My 03 F150 4.6L with 200k is super smooth now. I noticed an immediate difference as soon as I started using it.
Thanks for the feedback.
How much do you put in your oil and gas??
@@Officer_Naughty-Cuffs up to 25% of total oil. 4oz to every 10 gallons of gas
Well that is a tough one, one 1980 dodge with a 318, one hard clicking lifter, one granddad with a can of marvel , poured directly into crank case, no more clicking. I was impressed. I have seen sea foam work miracles with some engines also. I use both products just depends what the problem is. Good test. Thanks
Thanks for the feedback.
Good show. I use MMO for fogging long term storage engines and Seafoam as a fuel stabilizer. After many years, so far, so good.
That's a great approach! Thank you
Pure perfection this man was meant to do this!
I'm new. I didn't have anyone to teach me about cars growing up. Just bought a Ram 1500 and was trying to do work on it myself. You answered a bunch of questions I had. Thank you for making this video!!
You are welcome!
Thanks for the feedback.
