An interesting topic Mark. Re batteries: after purchasing a non Canon battery some years ago that only lasted for 6 months and failed in the middle of a shoot, I only use genuine Canon batteries. I have a couple that are still giving good power after 9 years!

Thanks for the insight Mark. I still use the Camranger sometimes for a remote release, otherwise it's a genuine Nikon one.

Darren Booker no worries mate, good to hear. I take it you’ve found the camranger to be reliable?

@@MarkGrayPhoto I haven't had too many issues with it, other than flat battery on the iPad...lol. If I don't have to be in a precarious position I will still use the cord remote though.

cable release? old school name for intervalometer
you can buy a wireless remote (the size of a credit card) for your new Sony (hopefully the A7RIV) for about $10AUD or you just grab an old smartphone and install the Sony app (Imaging Edge Mobile) they both work well with my A7RIII
the good thing about the app is that you see what the camera sees, which is good when the camera is close to the wet ground and you can also change exposure settings too
Also you can enable GPS tagging using the app

Nick T umm no, actually a intervalometer is a cable release or ‘remote release cord’ (if you want to get more technically correct to the digital age), that also allows you to take shots in sequences at different intervals. I’ve never owned one of these. Yes I currently own the A7rIV but haven’t been much of a fan of using phone apps to shoot, they are a bit of a novelty in my opinion, and wireless/remotes are always hit and miss. Sometimes they work other times they don’t, a ‘remote release cord’ is far more reliable...

@@MarkGrayPhoto I used an intervalometer when taking my astro shots until Sony included it (gave it back) in a firmware update, and you could use it to take single shots if needed
My wireless remote has worked reliably for 3 years now and has a range of about 15m (clear sight) which is fantastic for group or selfie shots, for $10 you should try it
