The "Wm" in "Wm Thompson" is short for "William", not "W.M.". It was a very common abbreviation in newspapers & magazines in that era.
It goes back *much* further than that - I have personally transcribed parish records from the 1300 and 1400's that include it.
Strange to see a newspaper printing the victim's full name and address as well as the value of the item that was stolen.
