    I just ran a inflation app on that $110 watch. In 1849 that was equal to $3123. Wow!

    The "Wm" in "Wm Thompson" is short for "William", not "W.M.". It was a very common abbreviation in newspapers & magazines in that era.

      It goes back *much* further than that - I have personally transcribed parish records from the 1300 and 1400's that include it.

    Strange to see a newspaper printing the victim's full name and address as well as the value of the item that was stolen.

    Good grief, Simon! The 'Wm" in Thompson's name are not initials. They are the abbreviation for "William"!

    Well now I’m wondering where the term "scam" came from...

    Glad to see that some people still remember that "Jms" and "Wm" are shorthand for longer names

    On one episode of Fawlty Towers, Polly refers to someone as a "confidence trickster." I'd never heard that term before or since.

    This is very fascinating! I was just thinking about this almost-forgotten case today, thank you Simon!
    Quick suggestion: I do hope that soon you, Simon and the rest of the TIFO team could team up with 'Mysteries At The Museum' team for a collaboration topic. If I'm right they covered a short episode about the confidence man, William Thompson. Among other great topics.

    "Wm. Thompson" just means william, dude. Not "W.M."

    For a long time I believed "Con man" to be short for "Conniving Man"

    Peoples were really trusting back then, that would not work even for a dollar store watch today.

      SlyPearTree If this was true, no one would fall for the Nigerian Prince scam or most scams. Truth is that lapses of judgement are far too common and even today there are folks who would hand over their smartphones if caught at the right time by the right confidence man.

    3:39 wouldn't Wm be an abbreviation of William?

      Yes. Simon also missed the pun that Sing Sing is a prison, not a university.

    Why do Brits wear so many clothes indoors?

    • @TodayIFoundOut
      @TodayIFoundOut  8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +Greg Bayes Ha, I didn't know that was something that people thought of us. Growing up it was always a matter of putting on a jumper (sweater), rather than turning up the heating. Gas is expensive!

    • @gxbayes
      @gxbayes 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why is gas so expensive that you are required to wear vest or jumper just to be comfortable? Does your gas have to be imported?

    • @Gungiiiiiiii
      @Gungiiiiiiii 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      If you spend less money on gas, you have more to spend on tea and crumpets.
