Every scam has one of these red flags: Ex-con man Frank Abagnale

  • In the past, con men were able to charm people one-on-one with a nice attire, great vocabulary and a likable personality. While they were captivating in person, modern day con artists are anything but that. They work remotely behind computers and in their pajamas, where it’s easy to take everything without any compassion.
Ex-con man Frank Abagnale, made famous in the movie "Catch Me If You Can," says technology may have changed the ways scammers operate, but it has not changed how scams work. To spot them, there are two red flags that are in almost every scam.
Flag one: Artists will say they need money urgently. Whether it’s money or card information. They often obtain this through a romance scam, where the artists will target those looking for a relationship.
Flag two: Artists will ask for personal information. They will often call or email as a bank fraud agent. By evoking fear into their victims, they can easily obtain the credit card security codes or social security numbers.

Another good piece of advice, if you ever answer a call from an unknown person, NEVER use the word "yes" at any time to anything they ask. That's how a lot of people ended up with various "credit card services" unknowingly added to their account. The "yes" would get spliced into a doctored recording the company could send to the card company to get the person signed up to whatever it was they were selling.

A big problem I have nowadays is legitimate phone calls from businesses I deal with for personal financial matters (eg, filing taxes) will phone me on my mobile (cell) and then ask me personal details to verify who I am. Every time, I tell them that they called me and I have no idea that they are who they claim to be, so why should I trust them? I then have to ask them to read a line from some previous confidential email I sent them, or some such, before I can proceed. They're mostly not prepared to be challenged on their legitimacy and it throws them for a loop. These poor business practices are just leaving the door open for the scammers.

@ I'm pretty sure debts are transferable. It's probably buried in the credit card holder statement or perhaps it's just a law. Let's think about it this way, before the 2008 crash, mortgages were bundled and sold to investment firms. By your logic, virtually nobody could be foreclosed on, but millions were for not paying their negative equity mortgages.
Another way of looking at it, do debt buyers depend on default judgments when they sue people or is there a legal basis for it? If there was no legal basis then everyone's advice would be just appear in court and it'll go away. That would cause anyone without concern for their credit score to simply not have to pay their debts. Obviously, neither of the obvious results appear to happen.
Lastly, by your claim even my student loans are all voidable since the government gave them to My Great Lakes once I graduated. Considering this is the norm, I would assume over $1.2 trillion in debt isn't voidable.
The rest of your point about pennies on the dollar and their absurd margins when they actually collect are true as I stated in another comment. However, unless you can link me to a credible source, I cannot believe your primary claim.

    embellished or just made up.
For instance the hospital he supposedly worked in, no who worked there at the time can remember he was there and the position that he worked on the night shift did not exist.
The place he worked for as a lawyer, no one can recall him having worked there.
Pan Am said that the amount that he stole with bad checks is no where near what he claims it is.

A genuine customer service rep should do everything they can to be professional and patient because they might lose their job if they aren't. A scammer won't, they'll just move on to the next victim.

The best scams asking for money don't even directly ask. They setup a situation where it seems like "they want to ask for money, but are too proud to do so and are just venting their frustrations a little." That is very effective at getting people who might feel sorry for them to open up their wallets, because that setup makes their charade seem more genuine and like the grifter actually has integrity.

I ALWAYS tell them "Thanks for the heads up, I'll go right down to my local branch and straighten this out. BYE" Or if I have time I'll keep them on the line and screw with them making up numbers, info and such...and change it as I go.

Good advice. A huge one, which works all too often, is a scammer uses your own greed against you - "Give me ten thousand, and I'll double it in a week." Or high interest payment scams.

I was on the phone with a friend of mine who was visiting his elder mother. In the span of a 30minute phone call, his mother received at least five calls. I heard her say that;s how it is starting very early in the morning on a daily basis. These con men do prey on our elderly and in fact, they depend on them.

My favorite scam was a man with a foreign accent said that he was from "United States Government". The man claimed the the government had too much cash (this was just after sequestration began) and that I was being given a $5000 grant for being a good person. He asked if I wanted $5000. Yes I said. He asked if I was a good person. No I said. for fifteen minutes he argued with me trying to get me to admit that I was a good person. Finally he got angry and yelled that I was wasting his time. Duh! I had fun at least.

Biggest point is the last one, if they elicited the call to you, you don’t know who is on the other end of the phone. So when they ask to authenticate who you are, they’re actually getting your private information rather than confirming the details they already have. An easy workaround is to always call back the main centre line.

It doesn't help that some companies/organisations phone you and start off by wanting to verify you're who they are supposed to be calling...I've even had this from the government and the bank. I laughed and told them they called me so I'll only confirm or deny information they already have. It's ridiculous though, they literally tell us to protect our accounts by not doing the very thing they then expect us to do. The calls were legit.

Family members hàve a sense of entitlement when they scam you..It's like they think whatever they are scamming from you they deserve more than you... Rationalizing the theft.

a classic one, the 2 miles long web page description of an "opportunity", followed by the testimonials of people who paid the "premium" subscription.
For me, if the pitch takes 2 paragraphs to describe, is a scam .

Red flag number one: They say they're from the government and they want to help you.
Red flag number two: They say it's not about the money. It's always about the money.
Red flag number three: They say it's what God wants.
Runners up: "The check's in the mail," and "I promise you won't get pregnant."
Know these and you got most of the basics covered.

I think it is totally stupid that when a pharmacy places a call to a person, they attempt to quiz me as though I CALLED THEM!! I am that one person who says to them, "YOU CALLED ME, so YOU tell me who I am; let ME VERIFY YOUR INFORMATION." If they refuse, I do not speak to them
