I was in the hiring process for the US Marshals Service and I can tell you that working in Wit Sec is deep undercover work. Normally people (like family) don't know you do that even though they know you work for the USMS. Obviously a minimum of secret security clearance is required, in part due to the amount of documentation they have access to and their contact with all sorts of people (witnesses, both victims and criminals).

It's a crosman 1377, I used to have one when I was younger (i think I still have it somewhere). Used to plink pop cans in my backyard all the time with the thing. And why would that be a concern?
ccubsfan94 my dad gave me me one in the summer I was 8years old told that it what my "job" to shoot at anything, other than birds, going after the bird feeders. He said by the end of summer school holiday, he would "grade" my marksmanship skill and that would determine if I would be allowed to keep the weapon. He was so impressed that I was able to hit just the tuft of hair in between their ears that I got an upgraded weapon of some kind. I also presented him with a dollar amount on how much money I had saved him in the past eight years. Then I asked for the cash.
Not SMART. He said I had gotten a bit fresh or precocious pushing it. But when I turned 16 he gave me a US Savings Bond that he bought shortly at the end of that school holiday. He told me to cash it or save it. At 51 years old, I still have it !

BUT! I don't like that it is taken for granted the viewer knows the video is *about* the situation in the USA and it also easy to think the video directly addresses US-Americans (USA isn't in the title).
There are other countries that have witness (and/or victim) protection programs, and others that don't have such programs.

I live in a Nordic country, and just googled that we do have it here also but it is not common. I also read that in America one man asked to get his gf into the witnessprotection instead of his wife😊but he wasn't allowed to that! I wonder if his wife ever found out about it? In another case a man lost contact with his daughter when they put his exwife,her new hubby and the daughter in protection for eight years. He later sued the government and won. After that it is possible for the other parent(in this case the ex husband) to get ful custody wich I think is right thing to do but what if the mom saw a murder of a, say mafia person and then has to get on the run alone with the kids in fear of losing custody if she tells the cops and they put her on witnesprotection? I know I would pack my kids and move abroad.

I'm not really surprised that some of these guys survived long enough to die of natural causes after leaving the witsec program. I mean, by the time they left, anyone left with any motive to hurt them was probably too old to get out of a chair without help from two people whose combined ages wouldn't equal their own.

its amusing how in reality, Witness Protection works really well, but in the movies and on television, its always portrayed a dismal failure, with the bad guys tracking down the witness, and the heroic protagonist just barely saving the witnesses.

i am writing a book and I have a character who went into protection program. He was the kids father but the grandmother have always raised them. is impossible that the grandmother can refuse to go in to protective costudy and keep the kids?
I actually looked this up, and what I found was basically that in cases where two people have joint custody of kids (e.g. ex-spouses), the one not going into the program has to agree to let the kids go into the program, or else they can't (thus severely limiting their possibility of visitation--they still have visitation rights, but it's VERY inconvenient, with a string of random flights and such). If the kids don't go into the program, I think they have to stay with the parent who is not going in, since the other parent can then not have contact.
I can only speculate what would happen in a case with a grandmother who had custody (or joint custody); I would assume she has the right to keep the kids out of the program. If she doesn't have custody, you can probably forget about it (again, just speculation).
i wonder what happens to debt or assets. if you owe substantial money are you forgiven? if you have substantial savings can you take it?
Also, today's digital world I wonder if people could insist on taking their computer, hard drives, games, etc. it could probably fit in a single box and I know people who'd risk death to keep their data. Especially now that assets are held in bitcoin wallets. Alternatively, what stops them from logging into social media accidentally giving away a position when trying to access important information.
