    Dental student here. You’re not meant to use mouthwash after you brush - that’s like the equivalent of putting on sun cream and then taking a shower - you’re washing all the toothpaste and the good stuff (like fluoride which helps to strengthen your enamel) off your teeth and spitting it out. Mouthwash is effective when you’ve had a meal and you want to quickly rinse the food out and have fresh breath. You could even use it before you brush but please do NOT use mouthwash afterwards!
    Flossing + brushing = best combo!

    My guess for why there is more bacteria on your front teeth is that when you're swishing mouthwash around your mouth, your molars and back teeth are practically being jet washed by the pressure in your mouth removing more plaque and destroying more bacteria, whereas your front teeth are getting less.

      @@richarduzor5560 I've noticed that whenever I use mouthwash, the fluid stays in the back no matter how much I move it around in my mouth, I can never really get the sensation of a good 'swish' in the front of my mouth. My theory is that all the muscles in the mouth are formed to bring food and liquid to the back. So every movement you make with your mouth to move liquid around, will still move most of it backward. It's like a peristaltic movement of the muscles that you have very little control over. I dunno, just riffing here.

    Hi! Microbiologist here -- the reason that the mouthwash version doesn't look "effective" is because your signal is saturated! Am more than happy to go further into here if you'd like, but the short version is that I bet that if you did dilution plating, you'd see a pretty large difference in the total # of bacteria you see for the control vs. the mouthwash.
    Keep it up! Science literacy and sharing how people do science is SO important right now in this era, and I appreciate so much the outreach that you do with this channel!

    • @zacharyhallberg5082
      @zacharyhallberg5082 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@RheeasDomain Great question Katja! When we talk about measurement techniques, you're often limited at the "upper" range if you don't have the right vantage point. All of the analogies I'm thinking of right now involve things that are painful, so bear with me: it's really easy for us humans to tell the difference between 20 and 30 degrees C, right? And 30 and 40 degrees C. But if we touched one thing at 100 degrees C and one at 110 degrees C (please don't do this), we wouldn't be able to tell the difference (just from our "heat sensors" alone). Our sense for heat is "saturated" long before we get to 100 degrees C, so it's impossible to tell if something is 100 or 1000 degrees past that point (all our brain registers is MAXIMUM HOTNESS).
      Hopefully that makes sense? Let me know if not!

    Theory for 'why there is more bacteria on the front teeth when using mouth wash' , when you are swishing around the mouthwash your lips are pressed tight to avoid any dripping and are firm against the front teeth making less mouthwash hit that area. Similar when gargling your head is back so the mouthwash isn't flying out of your mouth.

      That's a good observation, the other part of this would be the bacteria that hides in between gums and the teeth themself, I have also decalicifed the tar tar, but in a week its back, I was thinking that the other factor would be calcium water, meaning the water I drink and wash mouth with is loaded with bad stuff. But the local water experts say nothing wrong.

  • @dancoulson6579
    @dancoulson6579 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    The reason for the mouthwash not killin 99% is because it wasn't in a lab environment. It's usually a little asterisk (*) on the side of the 99%.
    99% bacteria killed in lab testing means that they usually grow some bacteria on a plate as a control, and then try to grow the same bacteria with the mouthwash present on the dish.
    Since the mouthwash is present for the entire duration of the lab test, it's able to get 99% of the bacteria.
    When you swish it in your mouth, it certainly kills some bacteria. But without the extended exposure, it won't get anywhere near as many.

    Best thing for me is alternating mouth wash types such as alcohol based, non-alcohol based, and Plax throughout the week and periodically adding a post-brushing mouth wash such as Smart Mouth to my routine really made a major difference to my oral hygiene. This paired with a good upgrade to an ultrasonic toothbrush such as Burst and a quality water pick, made all the difference. Long term results showed visibly whiter teeth, loss of all visible tartar, no more swollen bleeding gums and a polished smooth feeling on all my teeth that I had not felt in my whole life. (Tartar and plaque on teeth feels gritty and rough, clean teeth with a healthy enamel layer feel smooth and polished like slippery ice, feel with you tongue, not fingers) Also, sometimes I’ll give an extra couple minutes to a particular area of my teeth that I felt a bit too much grit on, resulting in a smooth polished feel after. I learned a lot of these techniques from other orthodontists and dentists who wrote papers and created videos educating these practices. As a child who’s parent took them to the dentist about 3 times, ever, I knew as an adult I had some work to do to save my teeth from its past. Glad I did my homework. Hope this helps someone in their journey.

    Everyone should know without proper dental care that leads to gingivitis. That is about as far as most people are educated. The stage after gingivitis is called periodontitis. If you reach this stage it starts to Decay and eat away the bone in your job that the teeth roots grip to. This makes the teeth loosen and eventually fall out of your mouth. It is hard to manage.

If you have plaque its already time to address it, not just brush it. Mouthwash has to be done every 12 hours and with the good alcohol containing kind. That and anticavity floride rinse 1x a day will make a noticeable difference in plaque accumulation.
