    I have not had tooth decay, much less dental caries, ever in my life.
    My oral hygiene routine is:
    1) Apply a _smallll_ amount of toothpaste onto my electric toothbrush, press the toothpaste _into_ the brush so it's actually fully used, and spread the toothpaste over all my teeth, but NOT brush yet.
    2) Floss using a reusable stainless steel floss holder that looks like an F, with a satin floss that is wound around the prongs of the F. This is much easier and faster than using my fingers, and allows me to use much less floss, too. Spreading toothpaste first makes it much less disgusting to floss, and also supplies fluoride which keep our teeth strong! Rinse with water after flossing.
    3) Gently brush teeth with the electric toothbrush that still has some remaining toothpaste from earlier. I go over each gumline twice, once in each direction, angling the brush towards each direction.
    4) Manually and gently brush tongue, cheeks, and massage gum with the toothbrush switched off.
    5) Rinse with water, clean all the tools, put on my retainers, and I'm done!
    All of this takes about 10 minutes.

      Obviously this works for you, but I really recommend not rinsing your mouth with water after brushing. It takes away the benefits from using toothpaste! I also generally use mouthwash before brushing so that I don’t rinse away the toothpaste after I brush.

    • @Jemtus
      @Jemtus ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@5050TM no problem! These are habits/tips I've built over years, so I don't expect anyone to follow it exactly. Like, pressing the toothpaste into the toothbrush was an idea I had many years ago that when I see others spitting out lumps of toothpaste after brushing, I had forgotten that I too had that problem, and wondered why they were doing that, haha.

    • @Jemtus
      @Jemtus ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi @@melaniesosa9539, thanks for the tip! I've tried it myself, but I couldn't stand the thought and feeling of having toothpaste that still had (most likely still living) bacteria sitting in my mouth. The main benefit of leaving toothpaste in is remineralization of the teeth with fluoride, but I know my teeth are not demineralized, as they have been before due to braces. Once the braces were removed, my teeth remineralize with the same routine even though I didn't leave the toothpaste in. But I also eat nutritious foods which help with remineralization of the teeth, and I tend to avoid foods high in sucrose as sucrose in particular forms a harder-to-remove plaque. So that's why I decided not to leave toothpaste in and just wash everything off.

    • @docJamesE1318
      @docJamesE1318 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@arek.b1256 In my office I recommend both depending on your location of greatest concern and your dexterity in your hands.
      Sonic does the most work requiring the least amount of dexterity. I have both at home and use the Oral B IO more because it cleanse like my instruments at work. I’ve found my older patients prefer Sonicare by Phillips and people who have gagging issues prefer Brain Oral B spin brushes. Hope that helps! Good Brushing can be done with a nice soft toothbrush by hand!

    • @docJamesE1318
      @docJamesE1318 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@arek.b1256 I like both brushes if you have periodontal problems I generally recommend the sonic over the rotary. But for comfort and clean the ultra soft rotary, not the standard head, is excellent if you have a liking for the rotating head. I like to soak my bristle heads in hot tap water just before I brush (warm to body temp is perfect not scalding hot) this allows the nylon bristles more flexibility they still clean just as well!

That is a layer of food remnants and bacteria, and if you look after brushing your teeth, it doesn't really go away without scraping it down. Also you can feel the difference when scraping and when not doing so. Your mouth freshness increase quite a lot. 😊

      Search up laser whitening, it's the safest method and it's not invasive like bleaching. It lasts from 6 months up to a year+ if you take care of your teeth. It leaves the teeth dry sometimes as a side effect but that only lasts for 12 to 36 hours.

    Problem for me was dentists just saying I should brush my teeth better or telling me I should do "this" while another one says the opposite.
    Before I got my braces was when a dentist would actually listen to my questions and give advice, told me I need to brush longer on the same spot ,use mouthwash, should floss and get a extra tooth brush for my gums (which have always been a massive problem)
    My teeth actually got better with that !
    When I got my braces it was a massive step backwards ,but I just added more extra steps and that somewhat works for me ,can't floss though anymore (just does nothing for me )
    But even with all that ,I still learnt things from this video !

    Here's my order:
    1. Floss: Since it's the most annoying but important step, why not do it first and just get it out of the way?
    2. Tongue scrape. I always wash and sanitize it after use because this thing picls up a lot of gross stuff.
    3. Mouthwash. I use Therabreath products because they aren't joking when they say their mouthwashes can wipe out even the most powerful onion. In the morning I use Invigorating Icy Mint to freshen breath and at night I use Clean Mint to prevent gum disease.
    4. After using mouthwash I give it five or so minutes to steep and take full effect before brushing In the morning I'll shave and at night I take a shower.
    5. Brush. I use an electric toothbrush that notifies me when to switch quadrants with any standard anticavity toothpaste. Once the two minutes of brushing the teeth are up, I'll brush the rest of my mouth: gums, the whole tongue as a whole going as far back as possible and the roof of my mouth.
    6. Once per month I'll use a scaler on any noticeable plaque buildup in an area I can safely do. This is mainly just for aesthetics; obviously I will leave it to my dentist to do the full deep clean.

    There are toothbrushes with textured backs that are meant to scrape the tongue, so you're using the plastic part instead of the bristles to scrape the tongue. I feel it serves the same purpose as the separate tongue scraper, just not as wide

    How often should you tongue scrap in a day like every time after the meal?

      Usually when brushing teeth, but the most important is before bed. A lot of stuff remains on the tongue after eating during a day.

      yes. will compile some products i personally like / recommend in future videos. as for tongue scraper - no particular brand. mouthrinse - ACT, Therabreath, elementa - are all non-acidic. whitening - start with over the counter (NON CHARCOAL) and if want to see better results, then seek dentist for professional in-office options, such as trays, gels, and lights. my whitening rec for in-office are opalescence & zoom

    it’s better not to rinse with water after brushing your teeth because the paste protects the teeth from biofilm and if you are rinsing with water this protective layer disappears

    HI Dr Yoo just wanted to get your take on mouth wash, I've read that mouth wash shouldn't be used after brushing because it washes away all the fluoride from the toothpaste, is their any truth to that?. When is the best time to use mouth wash? and how often is it once or twice a day?

    • @dr.johnyoo
      @dr.johnyoo  ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Great question. There are fluoride mouth rinses that can be used right after brushing, but for many rinses that do not contain fluoride, it is generally recommended to wait 20 min after brushing to rinse out. However, if you find that to be difficult to maintain this lag time in a routine, you can also use a non-acidic mouthrinse after eating and before your brushing session. For example, after I drink my morning coffee, I will rinse with mouthrinse, wait about 30 min, and then brush. There are no limits to how often you can mouthrinse - again, as long as not acidic. There are many nuances to a routine that I didn't want to delve into in too much detail. hope this helps clarify!

    I prefer irrigator instead of floss and I used to scrape my tongue with a metal teaspoon before I bought a plastic tongue-scraper. Also I clean my tongue before brushing teeth and gently massage tongue with toothbrush after with a bit of a toothpaste. Dunno if it´s right but I also use filtered water with a pinch of baking soda as a mouthwash coz market ones always left my mouth really sour.

    I'm proud of myself for doing everything right 😁. The only thing I can't figure out is the PH level of my mouthwash, lol. It doesn't say it anywhere on the bottle or online 🤷🏻‍♀️.

    • @simonmarcu01
      @simonmarcu01 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most mouthwashes that appear in advertisements have the pH under 5.5 :)) Colgate and Listerine for example. If the mouthwash stings when using it, it probably has a very acid pH. Although I don't really agree with the doctors in the video. The acidity, for me atleast, increases the saliva produciton which corects the pH level. And I've noticed that stronger, acidic mouthwashes tend to keep the freshness for longer. You can also dillute it a bit, if it really feels too strong.

    I’ve heard about tongue scraping, but I’ve never done it, before. I was wondering about it triggering the gag reflex, so thanks for talking about that! I’m going to go look for a tongue scraper. I also appreciate you talking about mouthwashes and avoiding ones with alcohol. I started looking for ones without alcohol many years ago, and it’s good to know that was the right decision.
    I’ve always used a manual toothbrush, but I’m thinking of getting an electric one. Is there any difference in using electric vs. manual, or do you still rotate the electric toothbrush in a circular motion?
    Your videos are always so fun and you explain things so well. And I also appreciate how you threw in to not feel bad if we haven’t been doing some of the steps. 😊

    It was a fun video to watch :) Im using 3% h2o2 without stabilizers as a mouth wash (Thin it out with water before) There are specific cautions one has to know about when using h2o2, but basically its a already in many tooth pastes and as far as I heard they are using h202 in whitening products as well. The reasoning is that Im living a very chemical aware life, used to have health problems and solved them by learning about chemicals.
