Garry Dial & Dick Oatts - Ellington Unheard | WDR BIG BAND | Full Concert Part 2

- The WDR BIG BAND performs previously unreleased works by Duke Ellington under the direction of its principal conductor Richard DeRosa (arrangements). Musical guests are Garry Dial on piano, who also wrote a large part of the arrangements, and Dick Oatts on saxophone. Recorded June 3, 2016 at the Philharmonie in Cologne, Germany.
After the death of composer and bandleader Duke Ellington in 1974, Garry Dial was entrusted by Ellington's family with the honorable task of sifting through and arranging Duke's musical estate. Garry Dial studied stacks of scores, fragments and notes. No work for the sidelines. As a result, many unpublished works came to light, which are now being premiered with the WDR BIG BAND.

The WDR Big Band takes me back to a time when I was young and went to see your girlfriends on a Sunday evening. It also captures the setting during those times. I seem to move forward in time years later when you went to a lounge which played jazz music as you snd who you were with say snd talked. The relaxing part of what the WDR Big Band is playing are tunes whose melodies you can not identify with.

The sound of advanced harmonies being funneled through a swinging large or small ensemble replete with intelligent improvisation is an apex musical event only delivered by Jazz.
This bassist! On the waltz near the end he stays dotted quarter Lafarro feel not walking 👍keeping the modern sophistication of the jazz waltz feel. I want this bassist.
