      He called him Lt. Dan for two reasons, One he served under him and he respects him regardless of the way Dan treats him in return. Two when Dan lamented to him over the loss of his legs and mentioned his own name in rank in passing Forrest said this and only this in response "You're still Lr. Dan." As simple minded as that sounds he pretty much told Taylor he's still who he is legs or no legs and while it took him a while he managed to realize that.

I really like that scene because for some moments, both sides forget their alliances and came together to have a nice meal. The disensitization of wars leads to hilarious opinions so when Arya says she's gonna kill cersei, they laughed and it was pretty much a good scene. As the other guy said above me, Forrest Gump was the movie that made this famous trope in the first place. Before this, Fortune Son wasn't in any other Vietnam War movie at all. This is why Baby Boomers say CCR were underrated especially compared to the Beatles and the Doors when it came to Vietnam War settings before Forrest Gump made it a stereotype.

      probably it was meant to emphasize, or rather serve as a nod to, the fact that in the military, there was no color distinction, and the two (gump and bubba) bonded so much during training that any notion of a race barrier to them is non-existent, acting as if they were like brothers, hence the obviously rhetorical question "are you twins?" But it also evokes the race struggle back home, maybe contrasting how these two different worlds (military and civilian life) viewed race. I think the looking at each other was for comedic effect. That's my two-cents on that part of the scene. I love this entire movie.

    Some interesting facts about feet in the Vietnam war. The vietnamese noticed that Americans love to kick things, so they put traps inside coconuts. Also they made traps called punji pits which were just sharpened bamboo spikes inside of holes. They realized the GI's could see them easier so they made them just small enough for a foot to step in. They were also tipped with human feces to cause even worse infections. GI's then started putting some sort of armor on the soles of their shoes so the vietnamese countered that by making the trap wider and connecting 2 spiked boards with a strap. The soldier would step on the strap and into the hole causing the jaws to come up and poke into the easily punctured canvas sides of the boot, still causing damage and infection.
    Feet are super important.

      One of the things I take away from the film is how Bubba was a young man who had all these plans for the shrimp business, his future after the war. Lieut. Dan in contrast felt he was destined to die a soldier as his ancestors did. Fate would find that Bubba would be the one to die next to some river far from home, and Lieut. Dan would live to an apparent old age, take Bubba's place on the shrimp boat, get married, and maybe continue the family line, with an asian woman of all people. I think its to remind us that our lives are in the hand of God. You never know when your time is up, and no matter what YOUR plan in life is, its ultimately up to Him.

      It's also to prevent a horrible condition known as "Trench Foot", which soldiers were exposed to with prolonged exposure to moist, cold and damp conditions that their feet are in. Since it was shown that Forrest, Bubba and the platoon were walking through streams and wet ground, their feet are exposed to these aforementioned conditions. Lt. Dan Taylor even established the routine doings of changing socks anytime they stopped, which is because sweat can cause Trench Foot, but has a lower and more progressive risk of doing so.

    As wife of Vietnam era Navy pilot - Forrest Gump comes pretty close to defining that era - the war - the factions at home. Life is full of irony. Our middle son married a Vietnamese girl about 8 years ago. From their marriage we have two beautiful grandsons - smart as can be - good - kind and loving. At their wedding in the village where she was born my husband gave a toast - may we all be united in peace and may this marriage of my son and your daughter be symbolic of that unity and peace. Vietnam is a very different country now. It is actually thriving for all intents and purposes. Wonderful people - love them dearly.

    Vietnam War movie instructions:
    Have the main characters be Marines only.
    Have a black guy or 2 in the movie.
    Play Fortunate Son everytime the protagonist is in a huey.
    Play Sympathy for the Devil everytime the protagonist is in a PT boat.
    Have the protagonist carry a M16 even before it entered service.
    Have a scene where a Rambo like soldier goes in the open and screams while firing a war pig and not get shot.
    Have a scene where the protagonist goes to a Vietnamese whore house.
    Have one of the characters dad's a veteran of ww2.
    Have a battle hardened sergeant.
    Have a napalm scene.

    • @___axg96___63

      True for a bunch of other films, but:
      Forrest was in the Army
      No PT Boats in this movie
      Forrest doesn't know his dad
      The battle hardened guy was a LT, but there was a Drill Instructor so I'll give you that
      Forrest has an M-16, but they were well in service before he enlisted
      No Rambo style stuff here
      No "me love you long time" here, either
      Yes CCR and yes napalm, but they were both used a lot in Vietnam

      It's a particularly stupid meme, too, since Fortunate Son is an.... ANTI-WAR song. VERY explicitly so. It would be like playing NWA's F--K the Police in every single buddy cop film when they first show up. Yes, the song is period-appropriate. But it's never used *in the proper context* in that period. Sigh. I hate Hollywood music producers. They're idiots.

    Kindly pause scrolling and make space for the following information in your memory banks:
    1. Tom Hanks was not paid for this film. Instead, he took percentage points which ultimately netted him in the region of $40 million.
    2. With every transition of Forrest's age, one thing remains the same. In the first scene of each transition, he wears a blue plaid shirt.
    3. Forrest's college football uniform is always spotless, due to the fact that no-one is fast enough to catch him.
    4. During the ping-pong matches, there was no ball; it was entirely CGI, animated to meet the actors' paddles.
    5. Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, and Martin Lawrence were considered for the role of Bubba.
    6. Jodie Foster, Nicole Kidman, and Demi Moore turned down the role of Jenny Curran.
    7. Haley Joel Osment was cast in the film after the casting director had noticed him in a Pizza Hut commercial.
    8. Forrest and Dan's Shrimp Emporium, "Bubba Gump," is now a themed restaurant in 33 locations around the world.
    9. After his experience playing lieutenant Dan, Gary Sinise established a charity to help disabled veterans. To date he's raised over $280 million.
    10. Selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry in December 2011 as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

    I have so many friends who were in all US military branches from 8 American Wars including Vietnam. My uncles father was in the army for 28 years and was even a colonel and was in Vietnam. It is unfortunate I never got to really talk to him almost at all before he passed away in September. He has been in Huey's and all. He did have nightmare's of his helicopter shot down and his own men dying right next to him and all but I heard some real cool stuff about him. They did go through a ton but those who did survive, many are actually some of the coolest and nicest people and can tell you many things about this war many don't know and it is amazing the stuff they can tell you. A friend of mine was also a USMC sniper over there for 2 or 3 tours and it is a shame how they were treated when they returned cause they were just doing what they had no choice to do or prison or die. Many are great people too. Another friend of mine is a Vietnam Navy veteran and he had a father in the 82nd Airborne and this friend is just all around a good guy to talk to. You can truly only imagine what some went through but you still want to keep in touch with those you know who served cause they love someone who understands and appreciates their service and sacrifice. For me, I am a huge supporter in appreciation for veterans of any war so I make sure to keep in touch with my veteran friends I can.

      sang yeon youn I thought that part was interesting also. My grandfather who was an adviser in Vietnam before the Gulf of Tonkin false flag saw Forrest Gump with me when it came out in the theaters. He told me he never would have saw it if he knew it had the hollywood Vietnam bs in it. Anyways I asked him if there were that many hueys regularly when he was there, he said way way more, they were carrying in endless streams of material and men at times.

    "And A Hard Rain Fell" by John Ketwig is an excellent books to read about a young man's experience in Vietnam. What a horrible war that was. We sent boys over there into a hellhole.

    The shot of a mother hugging her son.
    The shot of a silhouetted helicopter panning out to a machine gun.
    The shot of a battle hardened soldier looking disdainfully at two green eyed rookies with wide eyes.
    Everything about this scene is literally movie perfection.

    This scene shows that Lt. Dan:
    1 Does care about the lives of his men, at least initially;
    2 Understands that the most basic instinct of any grunt is to survive;
    3 Gives very pragmatic survival tips;
    4 Is willing to share some welfare with new guys who don't even have any footing in his unit.

    "IT'S JUST A MOVIE"????, Like any story well told, with sophistication, and complexity, this one connects with abstract truths that pass right by us under normal circumstances. Watching these scenes, so carefully crafted to a high degree of accuracy, and ambience is "extremely powerful" for me and millions of others. Despite some inexactness, or inevitable misrepresentations, there are many powerful themes, classical and contemporary contained in it. While the Author may not have meant it. Forest in one sense represents all young soldiers, certainly in Vietnam, but all wars. In one sense, no matter how brave, consciously valorous, intelligent, or trained a soldier is, all warriors are in a sense mentally debilitated, when the power of (Self Preservation), (Adrenaline), (Ear Piercing fear), and (confusion) grip you. When an inexperienced boy enlists, or is drafted, the obliviousness, is beyond belief for most recruits. We all have to die, but why do so many humans choose to end life for themselves, or others before they have a chance to fully love the family they die to protect? The humor is great and gives reality to scenes, because people use sardonic gallows humor in the face of fear, and uncertainty. The meaning viewers attach to these scenes are extremely potent. View them with respect.

    That deeply ironic, many generations-long-recited military mantra: "Don't do anything stupid" should be chiseled on the Washington Monument, for archeologists to dig up and marvel upon, from deep down in the rubble of the American Empire, the message to any survivors in the human species of the distant future.
