As a VN combat vet I brought home horrible demons it took me 40+ years to shed. I went thru periods of violence, crime, drug use, bar fighting, multiple wives, kids, etc. Trust me when I say there is nothing romantic or fun about real combat. Every vet I know has or had issues of trauma. My PTSD is now in a manageable place. I have good relationships, true love, a peaceful heart and demeanor. It IS possible to heal from traumas.
Watching the combat footage of what you guys went through is fascinating because so much of the training and stuff we learned in boot camp came from you guys.
Suggest you read about the boys who came home from WW1. You and they are no different. All messed up. Start with “Johnny Got His Gun” and go from there.

I was 18 when I served 1 tour in Korea and also did 1 tour in the Vietnam region. It took me about 1 year to fit back into the world. The war was very unpopular at that time back home. The soldiers coming back home didn't get much respect coming back home from Vietnam. Thanks to all the Veterans that served in Vietnam.
Thanks for your service. Some of my friends were in Vietnam, one did not come back. A nurse who was present during the Tet Offensive still suffers from PTSD and she is 96!. I'm glad you came back.

I served in the 9th infantry division in 1968 and fighting in heavy combat caused me to not want to deal with people because they would always cause problems that would lead to me having sleeping disorders with horrible ghosts that followed me home from Vietnam that only stood behind me which I couldn't see them but felt their presence that made my heart pound.
I remember these two white soldiers were arguing over a farm girl and she looked at them with her snake looking eyes and said ...I like my men dead! I knew she was Vietcong! It was a gut feeling! It's that feeling you get just before an ambush that leads to heavy combat.
My was uncle was a Marine and fought in Vietnam. He made it back and his stories will always be embedded in my head. Thank You uncle and all who served and stll serving, God Bless 🙏

At 19 years old drafted/enlisted, airborne school, special forces............It was the ultimate rush. Vietnam, that rush turned to realization of what my life was really like participating in the ultimate contact sport . I'm 74 now and there is not a day that goes by that I don't remember my 19 year old reality.

The tet offensive was only able to happen in the first place because the south government had already collapsed and there was practically no one left in vietnam left supporting it. Even if hypothetically Ho Chi Min and the rest of the northern leadership had been taken out (which is already fantasy), vietnam would have required us to act directly as their government. Which there was simply no appetite for. The war was over. Maybe at the beginning it could have been won if gradualism hadn't been adopted. But by the time we pulled out there was nothing even left to fight for.

I am a New Zealander, a "kiwi". We sent our boys to Vietnam and also to Korea. They were not treated as heroes on their return, much to our nations shame. It is only now they are recognised for what they contributed, many of them damaged mentally and also physically due to the chemicals used. Poor boys.

I'm an Air Force brat that was raised also around Army and Marines. I can't tell you, I don't have the words to say how proud I am of my military family. I'm not related to all of them, but I love all them. They understand bravery and courage. They tried, fought, lived and died, some to keep our country free and safe, others for their own reasons. But, they did it, they do it. I feel honored to have grown up in their presence, to be in a small way part of their lives. I was just a little girl, but I loved and love them all. Thank you for teaching me what brave looked like, for what honor looks like, and for knowing the real price of freedom, and value of life. All the older men in my family were military or military affiliated. They're all gone now. I'm an older woman now, I'm just one person and it probably doesn't mean much, but I still love you and feel that honor. Thank you.
I was a Navy brat raised around Navy and Marines. My brother was in ''nam. I understand what you are saying and also what you're feeling. They were the greatest family and friends I've ever had.
Still have my draft card from 1973. My selective service number was 14. Fortunately, a year of partying my brains out at Kansas U saved me from having to enlist. 1974 was the last year of the draft, so me and my buddies never had to show the draft board we were enrolled in college in the Fall of that year. Even they didn't care anymore. The writing was on the wall as we were already drawing down the last of our forces in Vietnam. Saigon fell in April of '75.

I showed this video to my 23-year-old daughter because she loves the song. I told that this is true war footage and she was amazed about what went on over there. She was never taught the Vietnam War with video footage in school, here in Canada. I was in High School (1975-1979) when this war was on and we were taught about it in Military History class, grade 10, with movie footage.
Today I was at Walmart and I saw an old man with a Vietnam special forces veteran hat and I walked up to him and said thank you but he was one of the nicest guys I have ever met he shook my hand he smiled he was just a really nice guy and I’m really sad to see these guys go just like the WW2 vets

I'm a 77-year old Latina who worked in Washington D.C. at the beginning of the Vietnam War. I met hundreds and hundreds of young men going to Vietnam. We drank lots and danced lots. We all knew it wasn't a good war (mostly because we were babyboomers 18-24 years old and naive), but were convinced it was for democracy. Rolling Stones was just new to the USA back then, but I dance to "Miss You" quite often. Watching this video made sense as to why I am like I am...reclusive. I know I lost my soulmate in that war.
I am not a US person. I was in England during the Vietnam war which was relayed to us daily on the 6 o'clock evening news. It was hard to understand the seeming lack of support from a large portion of the US public, calling returning servicemen 'babykiller' and other derogatory epithets. If the US military had the domestic support the British had in the Falklands they would without doubt have done much better, especially when after the Tet offensive in 1968, they recovered from a surprise attack and had the enemy on the run. But the political directorate at the time seemed to have got cold feet and let the military down. The military did not lose the war...the politicians and domestic opponents threw it away, settling for a face saving withdrawal of sorts. Salute and honour all who served. Rest in peace all who fell.

I was in vietnam for 3 years, when I arived In vietnam I was only 17 years old, they would not draft anyone under 18 years old, but you could enlist if you had your parents sign a waver for you giving there approval, and my mom did just that, I did not have a dad, my paents were divorced. I went thru the tet offensie, and that was nasty, when I finally got home from vietnam, I expected a warm reception from people, instead I gut cussed at F bomds, and I got hit with an egg in the face, the only reason I am telling you all of this is becaue, I want people to know that we did not start that war, the polititions did, so if must blame some one, blame the polititions in Washingto DC

I volunteered one week before TET happened. Left for basic 3/1/68 and spent 14 months in country. 1st Cav 2/7 C company 2nd platoon. I went in at 18, I came out and felt like I was 50. Not a day goes by you don’t think about it. 74 now and it’s always here. War is terrible. There’s absolutely nothing good about it. And you’re scared every frigen day. You get used to it, but the nerves and being scared never goes away. Anyone who’s been in combat and says they weren’t scared is either a liar or just an idiot. I was 17 when I arrived in Nam and my 2nd day in country I was in a Huey landing in a hot LZ in La Trang under heavy fire. To this day not sure how I made it out of there alive!

I lived through this war as 5 years child, seeing my family and friends died as civilians casualties of war. I was young but I remembered everything battle in front my door steps.
I served through 5 wars, and I was a child when Vietnam was going, my neighbor came home in a casket, and many others did too. I lived in a military neighborhood, lots of terrible times and some very good times when those who were lucky, and professional came home alive. Not until later did we realize that no one comes home from war, or is actually whole. PTSD is terrible, it allows you to relive your worst moments and memories. Thank you for your support. The "guy" getting executed was a murderer who had murdered several South Vietnamese women and children (the families of men who served as civilian authorities). BTW, perfectly legal in all societies to kill murderers, on the spot, who wear civilian clothing. The man shooting the NV spy was the Saigon Chief of Police who had just been told the spy had killed all of his assistant chief's family in cold blood. The Chief of Police was saved in the evacuation by Americans. He died (RIP) in D.C. some years back.

I know this is off topic to most but, I was sure thought it is the end of my colony when hundreds of cannibals start to raid the base, this song had been playing in the radio and thankfully didn't get my base destroyed, but sacrificed 2 from my 10 members of the colonists and imprisoned the cannibals to the prison area. My husband was. Ranger with the 101st Airborne and did 4 tours. He nearly came home in in a body bag save for his LT behind him who took the full force of a shell and was killed. My husband spent a year in Walter Reed. Yet when coming home on leave once balloons of urine where thrown at him by protestor SEA-TAC airport. It was a different time. Rangers lead the way.
I joined the Coast Guard in 75, just after Vietnam ended. I am thankful I was to young to go, but the malaise of the Carter years was a poor follow-up. I sometimes look back to my time in the service with shame. The poor men who went to Nam, deserved more then some 40 year old cutter trying to work in the 1970's. Our military has never recovered fully from this. And now with our current presidunce in office, we may see WW3...
As a young 8 yrs old, living in north west of England. I insisted the Nam war was over and all U.S military must leave. A week later most had done. Thank you for reading.

Love hearing from my uncles that served in both Iraq wars, my great uncle that served in Vietnam, and my Great Grandpa who is 100 years old, and just to mean to die, whom served in Korea and WW2 (121st Infantry Regiment) on the western front in Westphalia region. He was involved in what is knows today as the battle of Hurtgen forest. The stories... WOW! Never heard of "Tree Shrapnel" until hearing his stories. Apparently the Germans were retreating, and making life RIDICULOUSLY tough on the allies. He says the smell in the air was metallic, basically the smell of blood. It really seems after talking to my Great Grandpa, that men and women were built completely different back then. Tough, hardy people that were very resourceful, and were survivors. I like to think that out here in very rural Michigan, we keep a part of that hardiness and resourcefulness alive on our farm through long long hours, hard hard work, and constantly learning how to fix things with minimal resources, minimal time, but with necessity in mind. RIP to all soldiers that fought in all wars, throughout all of history!
I admire all the WW II vets I knew as a kid. The guy next door , our Scout leaders, etc. Some drank, most smoked, bt they all just got back into life and raised families.
My late father had PTSD. He served in Vietnam from Dec. 1965-Dec. 1966 as a military advisor. When I was growing up, sometimes Dad would have these explosions of rage that came out of nowhere, many times over a very minor issue. He was not a bad person; he worked to provide for his family, and was a handyman with the house and fixing the cars. I loved my Dad, but I was scared of him too, because I never knew when he would have an explosion of anger. He had served in the Korean War as a combat vet, and those two wars left him with psychological scars. In addition to his PTSD, I think he also had Intermittent Explosive Disorder. But in those days, there was no professional help for combat vets like there is today. Vets back then were told to shut up, and get on with it.
I don't like these kids to call war "happiness, sigma based" war is absolutely hell. You see explosions, men dead, and traumatic torture. Kids know NOTHING of how to be a real man themselves. They always called it based and nice, it's like your watching horror while your smiling. Wars will get worse

At 19 years old drafted/enlisted, airborne school, special forces............It was the ultimate rush. Vietnam, that rush turned to realization of what my life was really like participating in the ultimate contact sport . I'm 74 now and there is not a day that goes by that I don't remember my 19 year old reality.

The tet offensive was only able to happen in the first place because the south government had already collapsed and there was practically no one left in vietnam left supporting it. Even if hypothetically Ho Chi Min and the rest of the northern leadership had been taken out (which is already fantasy), vietnam would have required us to act directly as their government. Which there was simply no appetite for.
The war was over. Maybe at the beginning it could have been won if gradualism hadn't been adopted. But by the time we pulled out there was nothing even left to fight for.

I am a New Zealander, a "kiwi". We sent our boys to Vietnam and also to Korea. They were not treated as heroes on their return, much to our nations shame. It is only now they are recognised for what they contributed, many of them damaged mentally and also physically due to the chemicals used. Poor boys.

A Vietnam Vet couldn't get a job or a date with a blind dog when we came "home" I am sad to say I still don't call it "home". As one man said it "I am not happy to be there and I'm not happy to be here. I would rather just be somewhere else."

I mean its partly true but things happen in every war. So basically no one really wanted to associate with accused `child killers` ,when most vets just did their duty.

I'm an Air Force brat that was raised also around Army and Marines. I can't tell you, I don't have the words to say how proud I am of my military family. I'm not related to all of them, but I love all them. They understand bravery and courage. They tried, fought, lived and died, some to keep our country free and safe, others for their own reasons. But, they did it, they do it. I feel honored to have grown up in their presence, to be in a small way part of their lives. I was just a little girl, but I loved and love them all. Thank you for teaching me what brave looked like, for what honor looks like, and for knowing the real price of freedom, and value of life. All the older men in my family were military or military affiliated. They're all gone now.
I'm an older woman now, I'm just one person and it probably doesn't mean much, but I still love you and feel that honor.

My Uncle, Earl Gordon, served in Vietnam, he was a pilot. He's gone, but am so proud of him.
I was a Navy brat raised around Navy and Marines. My brother was in ''nam. I understand what you are saying and also what you're feeling. They were the greatest family and friends I've ever had.
Still have my draft card from 1973. My selective service number was 14. Fortunately, a year of partying my brains out at Kansas U saved me from having to enlist. 1974 was the last year of the draft, so me and my buddies never had to show the draft board we were enrolled in college in the Fall of that year. Even they didn't care anymore. The writing was on the wall as we were already drawing down the last of our forces in Vietnam. Saigon fell in April of '75.
Congratulations, you did not become a murderer of the civilian population of Vietnam, unlike your fellow citizens.
This war as any war will never be forgotten and cannot be dismissed by those who caused it. The politicians.

I showed this video to my 23-year-old daughter because she loves the song. I told that this is true war footage and she was amazed about what went on over there. She was never taught the Vietnam War with video footage in school, here in Canada. I was in High School (1975-1979) when this war was on and we were taught about it in Military History class, grade 10, with movie footage.

Today I was at Walmart and I saw an old man with a Vietnam special forces veteran hat and I walked up to him and said thank you but he was one of the nicest guys I have ever met he shook my hand he smiled he was just a really nice guy and I’m really sad to see these guys go just like the WW2 vets
same thing happend to me, honestly nam vets are some of the nicest people because I think after they've seen the horrors of war they get a special appreciation for life and that your still alive.

My grandfather served in Vietnam with the 1st Infantry Division and was a door gunner/crew chief.

My grandfather served in the Marine Corps during some point in Vietnam. I think he served in the 5th Marines, but I don’t know much else besides the fact that he hated the M16.

I'm a 77-year old Latina who worked in Washington D.C. at the beginning of the Vietnam War. I met hundreds and hundreds of young men going to Vietnam. We drank lots and danced lots. We all knew it wasn't a good war (mostly because we were babyboomers 18-24 years old and naive), but were convinced it was for democracy. Rolling Stones was just new to the USA back then, but I dance to "Miss You" quite often. Watching this video made sense as to why I am like I am...reclusive. I know I lost my soulmate in that war.

I am not a US person. I was in England during the Vietnam war which was relayed to us daily on the 6 o'clock evening news. It was hard to understand the seeming lack of support from a large portion of the US public, calling returning servicemen 'babykiller' and other derogatory epithets. If the US military had the domestic support the British had in the Falklands they would without doubt have done much better, especially when after the Tet offensive in 1968, they recovered from a surprise attack and had the enemy on the run. But the political directorate at the time seemed to have got cold feet and let the military down. The military did not lose the war...the politicians and domestic opponents threw it away, settling for a face saving withdrawal of sorts. Salute and honour all who served. Rest in peace all who fell.

I was in vietnam for 3 years, when I arived In vietnam I was only 17 years old, they would not draft anyone under 18 years old, but you could enlist if you had your parents sign a waver for you giving there approval, and my mom did just that, I did not have a dad, my paents were divorced. I went thru the tet offensie, and that was nasty, when I finally got home from vietnam, I expected a warm reception from people, instead I gut cussed at F bomds, and I got hit with an egg in the face, the only reason I am telling you all of this is becaue, I want people to know that we did not start that war, the polititions did, so if must blame some one, blame the polititions in Washingto DC

I volunteered one week before TET happened. Left for basic 3/1/68 and spent 14 months in country. 1st Cav 2/7 C company 2nd platoon. I went in at 18, I came out and felt like I was 50. Not a day goes by you don’t think about it. 74 now and it’s always here. War is terrible. There’s absolutely nothing good about it. And you’re scared every frigen day. You get used to it, but the nerves and being scared never goes away. Anyone who’s been in combat and says they weren’t scared is either a liar or just an idiot. I’d never want to see anyone go through that shit. Ever

I was 17 when I arrived in Nam and my 2nd day in country I was in a Huey landing in a hot LZ in La Trang under heavy fire. To this day not sure how I made it out of there alive!

The soldiers who returned home did not receive the respect they deserved for suffering the hellish environment of war and for fighting for politicians who did not even know who they were…Thank you for your service and for sacrificing your mental health for us

I lived through this war as 5 years child, seeing my family and friends died as civilians casualties of war. I was young but I remembered everything battle in front my door steps.
I served through 5 wars, and I was a child when Vietnam was going, my neighbor came home in a casket, and many others did too. I lived in a military neighborhood, lots of terrible times and some very good times when those who were lucky, and professional came home alive. Not until later did we realize that no one comes home from war, or is actually whole. PTSD is terrible, it allows you to relive your worst moments and memories.

The "guy" getting executed was a murderer who had murdered several South Vietnamese women and children (the families of men who served as civilian authorities). BTW, perfectly legal in all societies to kill murderers, on the spot, who wear civilian clothing. The man shooting the NV spy was the Saigon Chief of Police who had just been told the spy had killed all of his assistant chief's family in cold blood. The Chief of Police was saved in the evacuation by Americans. He died (RIP) in D.C. some years back.

My grandfather was in Korea, and he saw things that haunted him to the day of his death (miss you grandpa). The absolute hell that our boys went through, and the rejection of the country they served, makes one solemn. No mater what they did, they did something honorable. They answered the call of the soldier. They sacrificed everything: their family’s, their lovers, and their homes, to fight in some god-forsaken Forrest. This does not make the Vietnam war justified in any way, nor does it make the innocent life’s lost null. But my respect for Veterans sacrifice is immense. Thank all of you Vietnam vets for your service.
I pray that the next time the drums of war call, it will be to protect, not invade.

My husband was. Ranger with the 101st Airborne and did 4 tours. He nearly came home in in a body bag save for his LT behind him who took the full force of a shell and was killed. My husband spent a year in Walter Reed. Yet when coming home on leave once balloons of urine where thrown at him by protestor SEA-TAC airport. It was a different time. Rangers lead the way.

I joined the Coast Guard in 75, just after Vietnam ended. I am thankful I was to young to go, but the malaise of the Carter years was a poor follow-up. I sometimes look back to my time in the service with shame. The poor men who went to Nam, deserved more then some 40 year old cutter trying to work in the 1970's. Our military has never recovered fully from this. And now with our current presidunce in office, we may see WW3...

He was involved in what is knows today as the battle of Hurtgen forest. The stories... WOW! Never heard of "Tree Shrapnel" until hearing his stories. Apparently the Germans were retreating, and making life RIDICULOUSLY tough on the allies. He says the smell in the air was metallic, basically the smell of blood. It really seems after talking to my Great Grandpa, that men and women were built completely different back then. Tough, hardy people that were very resourceful, and were survivors. I like to think that out here in very rural Michigan, we keep a part of that hardiness and resourcefulness alive on our farm through long long hours, hard hard work, and constantly learning how to fix things with minimal resources, minimal time, but with necessity in mind. RIP to all soldiers that fought in all wars, throughout all of history!
The fact is that even if you survived a war you might PTSD.
I admire all the WW II vets I knew as a kid. The guy next door , our Scout leaders, etc. Some drank, most smoked, bt they all just got back into life and raised families.
My late father had PTSD. He served in Vietnam from Dec. 1965-Dec. 1966 as a military advisor. When I was growing up, sometimes Dad would have these explosions of rage that came out of nowhere, many times over a very minor issue. He was not a bad person; he worked to provide for his family, and was a handyman with the house and fixing the cars. I loved my Dad, but I was scared of him too, because I never knew when he would have an explosion of anger. He had served in the Korean War as a combat vet, and those two wars left him with psychological scars. In addition to his PTSD, I think he also had Intermittent Explosive Disorder. But in those days, there was no professional help for combat vets like there is today. Vets back then were told to shut up, and get on with it.

I don't like these kids to call war "happiness, sigma based" war is absolutely hell. You see explosions, men dead, and traumatic torture. Kids know NOTHING of how to be a real man themselves. They always called it based and nice, it's like your watching horror while your smiling. Wars will get worse

I proudly served as a rescuer, US Coast Guard. There are ways to serve other than killing.
