I like that you talked about the fact that our brains literally make this difficult for us. I feel like sometimes people make (individual)overconsumption nothing but a morality issue and completely ignore the things that are out of peoples control. It's nuanced
I can relate to this so much. I used to be someone who overconsumed, often for no real reason. At the time, I felt like I was winning-getting more stuff, especially when it was free, gave me a strange sense of accomplishment. But now, looking back, I feel terrible about it. These days, I feel like I’m truly winning by having less. It’s such a shift in mindset, but I believe when you know better, you do better.
Great timing for Black Friday 🙌 My friends got me gift cards for a baby shower. I took advantage of the sales to buy a car seat. One of the few things I'll always buy new, for safety reasons.
There s no reason why people can’t buy a used car seat, they have a manufacture date with a use by date & they can be safety checked & fitted by a government approved agency.
@@darien8080 but u never know if something is broken or not. We are not experts. Unfortunately often people wouldn't be able to tell til something bad happens and the car seat is put to use :(
That kind of excess makes me sick to my stomach🤢. I hope this video and its message resonates with people before buying all sorts of garbage for Christmas gifts. 🥰🥰🥰
I still have a hard time fighting the urge to buy whenever I’m feeling down or anxious. I do the same thing as you do Shelby : the thrift store 😅 but I always have a very specific item in mind, if I don’t find it the urge of shopping is gone anyway
Such a great video! A lot of things to think about, particularly about marketing, anyhow our minds have not caught up with current commercialism. Thank you!
The decreasing the friction is absolutely crazy right now with almost every shopping platform offering the "make payments" option with interest. I'm hearing people are going into massive debt doing this because now they can buy things they can't even afford even if they don't have a credit card!!
Testing a period product must take even longer because you can only test once a month. 😅 Thankful for your dedication, ladies! Checking out the site now since I just had my first period post partum. Super excited to try it!
I hate shopping and would rather do just about anything else. Consuming less is good for the planet and your wallet. Therefore, I think one should ask these questions when they’re looking to buy something. 1: Do I need it? If so, how soon do I need it? 2: Can the money that I’m going to spend on said item be put to better use elsewhere? 3: Where will I store it? 4: Am I buying it to replace something that broke? If so, can I repair what broke? 5: Do I already have that item or something similar that will work? 6: How frequently am I going to use the item? If it’s a one time use or infrequently, can I borrow it? 7: Can I get it secondhand? 8: If it must be purchased new, what is the most sustainable option that I can afford? In addition, go into the store with a list of what it is that you need or want so that you buy only those items and nothing else.
Wow my heart really sings knowing people like you are part of the younger generation (I’m 52). So inspirational. Also one of the things I like about our educational system in the Uk is that both state and private schools have uniforms.
when i took a look at myself it was really just a mental health issue. The putting things or the high of shopping to fill the void or self sooth whatever that is. When i got the help i needed alot of my addictive personality has gone away. Not saying its true for everyone just my viewpoint. I did replace with activities some free some not.
Great vid! Agree as a content creator who DOESNT want to sell crap it is hard making videos and building an audience on TikTok when I’m just trying to connect with folks, not sell them stuff.
Omg the clip of the Ugg haul triggered me. A couple weeks ago I saw a tiktok on how they drown the sheep en masse in big metal containers to make the Uggs and I haven’t recovered yet.
I don't care about corporations but its also important to be aware of misinformation. Did they actually have-well cited evidence or did they just play an unattributed video and tell you it had something to do with UGG?
I always struggle so much with not knowing what to buy because there’s no long term review of anything.. how am I supposed to know if something will hold up?
@Shelbizleee same!!! Every year for Christmas, I ask all of my family members for a little cash to go towards my youtube premium membership! This way I end up with enough money to buy my membership every year! Lol
I’ve noticed recently certain cleaning company brands that seem to really target people with stereotypical ocd, where they’re basically trying to send the message of “you’re right your house isn’t clean enough right now, even if it looks completely spotless. Buy our thing”. It’s sooo frustrating.
I believe myself to be really enageged in sustainability, I learn a lot about it, I've been following this channel for like 6 years, I preach sustainability, but.. when my ADHD hits I fall into shopping spree, it's not about the things I buy but the act of shopping, it's just "cheap dopamine". And when I get better I feel so bad about buying all those things... but sometimes I just can't stop. That's usually second hand clothing, but I'm also guilty of binge scrolling Temu 🤦🏽♀️
12:35 thinking about it cynically I can see why people would think that and I see it working for some time, you get cute things for free and get to show them online and use them and you often get more without asking, you get to make a living of of something easy and ‘fun’. In the long run tho there isn’t a long run, people move to other platforms, follow other younger more trendy influencers and you have (unlike other jobs) nothing to show to be proud of, you didn’t make anything to show to others, you didn’t help people in a substantial way and maybe if you’re lucky you are left with money to wonder what to make up of your life, thinking about a life like this is really eerie.
Every time I feel the urge to impulse buy I watch videos of india The amount of garbage pollution and the world's largest mountain of trash thats somehow almost aleays on fire really helps curb that craving
I’ll never forget when an influencer I followed posted a sponsored post with Jenny Craig and the next week was sponsored by digiorno pizza. Sis, make it make sense
I do wanna say as someone who’s got reoccurring depressive episodes, I think what people REALLY mean when they say that (if I could have 100 packages-) is: “if I had that kind of financial security, it’d significantly reduce the negative impact of the disregulated/unstable/unsafe environment that’s significantly feeding my distress.” Though, romanticizing having more than you could need literally-in a consumerism way-is ultimately unhealthy and unfulfilling. This applies to both us as humans and the planet, in which our goal is to uphold both. By the way, if you already know this, that’s great! I just wanted to share because I cant really tell sometimes what people mean by what they say online because of my neurodivergent brain. But, I’ve kind of learned to decipher. Thanks for this video, you guys! I just got the Who Gives a Crap toilet paper delivered on Halloween lol.
I recently learned that excessive internet use can harm the environment because of the energy it takes to power these devices. Do you have any ideas for this? I have heard of like certain browsers that are better for the environment, but what about when I’m not using that browser for example
I think one of the wildest things that contributes to over consumption is “aesthetics” because younger women will choose aesthetics like “cottagecore” then buy a million outfits, room decorations, Starbucks drinks etc as that aesthetic then switch to goth aesthetic and start over. It’s insane
@shelbizleee the video i absolutely needed and i know many others did too!... Especially with the holidays i always have such a hard time trying to balance my love for wanting to be festive and my hate for the consumerism associated with the holidays. Latley Ive felt like no one cares anymore and its so hard to combat that. Thank you both for filming this video! ❤😢❤
Your skin can "improve" after just splashing it with water. Sometimes it DOES work. I know people dont want to believe it and i dont for everything, but skincare products are science and if its done how its tested it often DOES WORK. understand what youre saying tho; the competitiveness is leading to drastic claims.
I don't understand TikTok shop at all, but would it be able to be used to raise money for a conservation cause? Like planting a tree and you get a certificate or a bracelet? Idk, I just feel like the work you both do is too important to be covered by more capitalism
I used to watch a crochet influence who would review yarns *in the store*. Not even buy and swatch them, just touch them in the store and tell you want you could make with it. That's not a review.
For the period panties, have you looked into ways to make them changeable without having to undress from the waist down? Like snaps, velcro or zippers?
I am absolutely living for the microphone clipped to the spoon 😅
it's because she's cooking 🥣
I like the day bed or couch thing that looks like a crib
took me 18 minutes to realize and I just came down to comment lmao
Had so much fun hanging and making this video with you in TX!
I loved listening to this convo, it was fun 😄

Even consuming mindless opinions online is destroying society. You either predominantly create or you hyperconsume. YOU CHOOSE.
hmmm food for thought

So true! It’s important to shut off this noise of influencer materialism and consumerism.
That kind of excess makes me sick to my stomach🤢. I hope this video and its message resonates with people before buying all sorts of garbage for Christmas gifts. 🥰🥰🥰
wow i needed the pronunciation of your channel name HAHAHA
I challenged myself to get as much as possible 2nd hand for my 1st baby as soon as much baby stuff is barely used
Was looking at your page yesterday cuz was missing it and you didn’t post in a while, so happy to see this vid pop up
I still have a hard time fighting the urge to buy whenever I’m feeling down or anxious. I do the same thing as you do Shelby : the thrift store 😅 but I always have a very specific item in mind, if I don’t find it the urge of shopping is gone anyway
I got a pair or period panties and will be buying more every check and also saving for a pair of your brand!
I WANT MORE OF THIS!
Such a great video! A lot of things to think about, particularly about marketing, anyhow our minds have not caught up with current commercialism. Thank you!

Girl, YOUR HAIR LOOKS GORGEOUS!! Stunning ✨
Breakingdown those PR boxes would be a full time job.
Testing a period product must take even longer because you can only test once a month. 😅 Thankful for your dedication, ladies! Checking out the site now since I just had my first period post partum. Super excited to try it!
Okay but the hair is a SLAY

I appreciate the note on food waste. It's something I've been tackling especially given the post-panini inflation.
Looking forward to hearing you talk about the” buy now : the shopping conspiracy “ documentary
Loved this style of content :))
Buying your product for my flatmates christmas gift
Shelbs hair looks stunning like this!
The food part hit...i have always been really good about food waste...but buy 2 of every food.
Love the wooden spoon 🥄 microphone 🎤
Omg the clip of the Ugg haul triggered me. A couple weeks ago I saw a tiktok on how they drown the sheep en masse in big metal containers to make the Uggs and I haven’t recovered yet.
Oh my gosh?? Why do they have to drown them 😭😭😭

Yes! We DO care about ethics and integrity!!
I always struggle so much with not knowing what to buy because there’s no long term review of anything.. how am I supposed to know if something will hold up?
The style of this video has me begging you for a podcast!!
That's way i have a TH-cam premium abonnement. I don't wanna see advertisement. ❤
I couldn’t live without YT premium anymore I swear!!
@Shelbizleee same!!! Every year for Christmas, I ask all of my family members for a little cash to go towards my youtube premium membership! This way I end up with enough money to buy my membership every year! Lol
THE ULTIMATE COLLABBBBB
I haven’t even started the video, but I just have to say that your hair is so gorgeous! You look so beautiful! ❤
LIVING FOR THIS COLLAB 🤩
I would love a video all about your houseplants!
This is such an important conversation.
Shelbi's "toilet paper" made me giggle 😂

That, in 3 daaaáaaaiyyys!?!? Was awesome
Watching this while having lunch 🍽️😊
I love Sam! This was a great vid

Great stuff! Have you thought about starting a podcast? 🤩💯
14:03 this.
Shelbi, will you be posting your "what i won't be buying in 2025" video soon?
usually after Christmas! But yes!!!
Please start a podcast !!!
I recently learned that excessive internet use can harm the environment because of the energy it takes to power these devices. Do you have any ideas for this? I have heard of like certain browsers that are better for the environment, but what about when I’m not using that browser for example

Wait, what?!? You’re NOT my friend?!? 🤣
I'm sorry, discussing over consumption then oh buy our underwear! I get that it's quality etc. But probably misplaced in this vid
You guys are de-influencers!
I really enjoyed this video and am not trying to talk shit but I do find it kind of funny that you put a pitch for your own product at the end of it
I don't understand TikTok shop at all, but would it be able to be used to raise money for a conservation cause? Like planting a tree and you get a certificate or a bracelet? Idk, I just feel like the work you both do is too important to be covered by more capitalism
The fact that this video had 2 ads roll every three minutes..... advertising be trying so hard to make sure the message of the video is lost lol jfc
Are you aquarius?
I legit cannot walk into a retail store without severe anxiety.
I used to watch a crochet influence who would review yarns *in the store*. Not even buy and swatch them, just touch them in the store and tell you want you could make with it. That's not a review.
It's a different kind of review based off parameters like touch, feel, weight, softness, colour etc. but it still is very much a review.
For the period panties, have you looked into ways to make them changeable without having to undress from the waist down? Like snaps, velcro or zippers?
y'all are so beautiful and inspiring
I have struggled with all these topics with consumerism. Great discussion and reminders! 🫶
My favorite influencer comment is “omg I’m going to wear this all the time/every day” 🫠 and two weeks later it’s replaced…
Looking forward to hearing you talk about the” buy now : the shopping conspiracy “ documentary
