I 1000% agree with how making things can fill the void of trying not to shop!! For me, if there is something I want, but don't need (maybe a new pair of bold eyeglasses, or a new pair of fancy shoes), I get my paints out and draw it on a character! It helps me capture the item in a way that makes me feel like I own it, without having to own it.
Last year, I saw knitted pumpkins decorations at Walmart and thought they were so cute. I knit, so I figured I’d just make my own. This year, I’ve knitted a bunch and I’m gonna keep making them until I run out of the yarn I bought. I’m drowning in tiny knitted pumpkins I made and I couldn’t be happier 😂
In Australia we move leaves because we want to discourage spiders and snakes (often venomous) making a home in our space, this is a safety reason. I recommend people in that situation move leaves to one spot in your yard that you won't touch if you have a big enough space for that.
I do my food scrap broth in the crock pot…just leave it on low until it feels done. I pour it by 1/3 cups into muffin tins and freeze it. By measuring it first, I know how many disks to take out of the freezer when I need it. Works a charm! Woohoo fall soups🍁🍁🍁
I spent 42 hours over the course of the month of September hand-sewing a bathrobe from an old bedsheet. It's objectively not a great piece of clothing, but I love it so much, because I put so much time and care and thought into it. I highly recommend hand-sewing as an activity.
You mentioned a while ago on another video how you would take a picture of something while you were out if you wanted instead of just buying it. I took that idea and not only do I typically forget about the want I had for that item (lol) but I have the picture as inspo for when I want to craft something later! It's been such a handy tip🤎
For anyone who cannot donate pumpkins, you can use them in your compost bin but you can also feed them to the squirrels in the park. In my neighborhood we cut them in half and leave them in the local park and the squirrels go nuts. See what I did there? lol
Woah! I'm so glad the algorithm sent your video! I'm the Executive Director at Scraplanta, and I love to connect with more folks who run art supply craft stores. I also love how community oriented you are! I'm taking notes!
Last year I bought a glass pumpkin from a consignment store. It’s so beautiful when the sun shines on it. I think decorations can have the same excitement and nostalgia that you described about your fall wardrobe if you put them away and pull them out when the time of year comes around again
My niece and I are hosting "Boba Fest" so we can have boba teas without all the plastic waste that come with buying them. We've collected a lot of large glasses and thermos bottles to serve the tea in, have made up a bunch of recipes, and even made our own lychee jelly (a slightly hilarious and also slightly disgusting experience). We're using old-fashioned iced tea spoons in place of straws, and of course, everything is plant based. Not exactly fall-themed exactly, but a way to bring people together without a lot of waste to have a fun afternoon.
Seed swaps are so much fun! Get a bunch of friends to trade seeds and cuttings and plants and pottery you don’t want anymore or extra garden supplies. It’s a great way to get fun new stuff, keep things from getting thrown away and spend time with friends. Make a big batch of a fall beverage and get everyone together!
Love this! For my decorations, I decided to go on walks with my nephew, and we collected leaves that I later dipped in wax from an old candle, and tied the stems onto a string to make a beautiful garland. We also collected some big branches that were like mini trees and I made some paper ghosts and bats and hung them onto the branches that I later placed in my living room. It was a lot of fun and I definitely cherish those decorations and the memories behind them more than I've ever cherished the cheap store bought ones.
Loved this video, Shelbi! I am so tired of consumerism on some channels. Shopping, plastic decor etc. Ugh, makes me sick. Your channel is a breath of fresh, Fall wind 😃. Btw I used to live in Florida and to feel any Fall, I would lower my AC just as tiny bit and play rain or thunderstorm sounds on my phone. I sometimes went the extra mile and had a fireplace on the TV 😂. I missed Fall so much! Now is live in PNW and oh my gosh, this is it!!!
I live in az so we dont have a true fall. To get into the fall mood i like to have fall ambiance videos playing and turn down the lights. Its free and makes me feel good!
Btw to avoid making a mess with things like your stock: get a canning funnel! We have one (for things like making relish) and it makes pouring things in jars a lot less frustrating.
18:12 my yard is full of leaves and we have sticks in a pile and bunny's actually use it as protection 😭 we also have a fallen tree that deers have been using as shelter. While all the sticks and a fallen tree isn't "pretty" how wonderful is it to have wild animals use them 😭❤️
Absolutely loving the process of rewilding my gardens…it’s so fun to know I’ve grown something from seed and see it thrive. Also, anyone in a northern climate (I’m in Ontario, Canada) we do winter sowing…leaving your seeds outside after the winter solstice because native plants NEED that cold snap to germinate! No more seeding indoors! I have had friends that have had success with some vegetables as well, so I’m giving that a try this winter. Look up winter sowing for your zone🥰🥰🥰
LOVE this video!! Thank you for these amazing suggestions on natural decor and what to do with them when done!❤️ Love it! With regards to the leaves; we left them in the front yard last year and it was totally fine! But we left them in our back yard and OMG😬😬 I regretted that SO MUCH. Our back yard does not get a lot of sun so it stayed muddy and disgusting until like JUNE😂😂 so I would say if your yard gets sun, totally fine. If it doesn’t get a lot of sun, NOOOOO😂
Our neighbor moved a month ago, and she always had an epic haunted house for halloween. She knew my nephew loved her spooky house, so she gave my mom all her leftover decor in order to declutter it! I was so happy about that bc it helped my own mom out who never buys decor maybe once every 10 years lol.
I want decor and stuff based around seasons more than holidays so it gets more use. I make scrunchies and have one with leaves on it for fall and a snowflake one for winter. I live in Minnesota so winter lasts much longer than Christmas. I also want practical decor like reversable table runners, placemats, etc
I love everything you're doing. Thanks for all the great work. I never thought of creating filling the need of consumption before! Also, love the hair color -- it suits you!
I'm curious to know more things about community involvement! I'd love to plan some events that encourage being eco conscious but I don't know where to start
Loved all of these tips!! Do you mind sharing that candle shop you mentioned?? I also live in Austin and love the idea of reusing certain vessels for candles rather than buying a whole new one! I tried Googling it with little success lol, but I did see that ACR has classes but idk if that's what you were talking about. Thanks!!
Would love to see a video on your farm stand process you end up doing! Also, would love more info or a video on becoming a "zero waste block leader" and what that looks like. Thank you for ALL you do!
Friends of mine in SF host a voting party every year, where each person researches a candidate or ballot measure, and everyone comes together and reports on their research. It's probably best to do this with friends that you share a political perspective with, but it's such a great thing. Also, Shelby, could you maybe do a video on things like Duraflame and other stuff related to fires? I don't live near a lot of trees, and have none in my yard, and I think Duraflame is made from wood scraps so it's what I use. But I don't feel confident... 😐
Girl not to be consumerist but you need a wide mouth funnel for canning!!! I make broth as well and it’s so helpful. I actually use them so much since I got them for Christmas. Also- place a bowl with a colander in the sink and dump the broth into that. Much easier setup just more dishes.
Your videos have really gotten to be so, so good over the years. I really love how you live everything that you belief in as best as possible. Also..your house is really cute and nice and clean. I have always just reused all of my decor. It was how I was raised. I have had mine so long that I don’t even know where it came from. We still carve pumpkins. We roast the seeds and eat them. The chickens get the guts and eventually they get the rest of them too. We buy our pumpkins directly from a local farmer. Since you mentioned it…we rewilded about 1.5 of our 2.5 acres years ago now. It started when the riding mower broke down and we just went with it. It’s less work and now we have a black walnut grove and a large brush and branch pile for wildlife. We are surrounded by farmland so I hope that this 1.5 acres is helpful ecologically.
I love that you decorate with real pumpkins! You have inspired me to do the same, I only have a couple but they make me so happy! When it's time to take them down I will make them into a soup 🙂
Yes yes and YES! Highly recommend as a recovering shopaholic to put your seasonal clothing away and making it a whole event for yourself! Shopping from my closet and trying to alter things into the things I want has really gotten me out of my consumerism mindset and stretches my creativity. I am excited to bring out all my “fall friends” this year while I listen to the “Over the Garden Wall” soundtrack. Mindful Fall here I come! 🎃🎃🎃

I did a Christmas painting years ago with a friend, and now its one of my favorite things. So now I want to host a painting get together and make Halloween paintings with friends. Anyways, you're so right about making your own crafts fulfilling that part of your brain that wants to shop. I love my handmade decor so much!!
I made butternut squash soup last month and had a lot of leftovers so I froze it and the other night I cooked the amount we needed and it was still so good like the first time I made it
Thanks for the fun ideas! I almost have enough veggie scraps for more broth! I definitely need to host another clothing swap because the last one I had was so awesome.

would you consider making a video on how to properly recycle unusual items? for example makeup products that still have unusable residue inside, binding on notebooks, in functional electronics, etc.? i feel like a lot of people don’t realize that certain things can’t be recycled which causes more unnecessary waste. thanks in advance:)
WOW LOVING the red hair! xx I saw leaves that had been raked and left in plastic bags by a trash can Not joking i felt physically sick . WHY? its not hurting anyone and wasn't even relating to a private homes lawn but a pathway with some trees next to an underpass entrance
I think it has to be a mindset. You have to be a free thinker and okay with not following the influencers. You have to be okay and secure in what you are doing. I love all the seasonal things but at my heart i dont want the chaos or clutter. I dont buy anything to decorate since i dont like decor in general. My neighbors are those people so i enjoy their stuff without it in my space. as far as diet mine doesnt change anymore at the core. we eat the same year round. Clothing i wear the clothes i have IF i add to my closet it has to be because its a must have not a good sale going on.
I would love to see this style of video for all the seasons. In Australia summer is actually the season of overconsumption because that's when we have Christmas so there all lot of wasteful summer products
I 1000% agree with how making things can fill the void of trying not to shop!! There are so many different ways to make them and out of so many materials. I work at a fabric and craft store so I get so many ideas
Shelby's new hair is giving Nicole Kindman from Practical Magic vibes! Such pretty long locks!!

Pro tip from an ecologist who has studied milkweed, wait until the pods have already popped open naturally before harvesting them!

Hand-sewing all the way ✨
🎉🎉🎉
Do you have a TH-cam channel to recommend to watch for hand sewing 🧵🪡?

Yesss this was EXACTLY the video i needed right now! i LOVE fall but hate the hyper-consumerism that comes with a lot of "fall" things

I have loved your videos for over 3 years now. Thank you for continuing to produce thoughtful and beautiful content to make the world a better place🫶🏼
I have also cut up, roasted, pureed, and froze pumpkin to use for recipes later on!
I am a fan of seasonal decor that can be used up or composted: a candle and plants!
Saving this to rewatch in March when it’s Autumn here in Australia 🇦🇺. I hope you also do a spring version as a companion and comparison

Yes please, PLEASE VOTE!!!! I'm also in Texas and...yeah. Please vote, y'all. Great video as usual, Shelbi!
i made wood bead, pine cone and cork garland for fall and winter decor because my house is mostly earth tones.

I can’t get over how STUNNING the caramel hair on you is!!!
The funniest thing about people raking their leaves is like, dude it's EASIER to leave them! It is literally less time and effort for you

you are one of the oldest profiles/comments I always recognize. Thanks so much for being here for so long ❤️ also amazing on your rewilding project!!
Omg your hair is sooooo cute love the color and the bayangs.
I love that you decorate with real pumpkins! You have inspired me to do the same, I only have a couple but they make me so happy! When it's time to take them down I will make them into a soup 🙂
Your hair you are a bombshell, amongst so many other wonderful things ❤
I love this. It irks me that so many videos show hauls in preparation for fall

I wish people would get their heads out of their asses and start acting right before we all roast to death.
It has been hot in Wisconsin as well. We normally have to have the furnace on by now.
I just adore you and your content!
, I love the hair! 🔥
i know i should leave the leaves alone but i use a leaf blower to get them off my backyard because it’s really hard to keep up with dog poop in the thick leaves. but i do hold onto them and use them for mulch so hoping that makes up for it a little bit. it’s always hard to balance doing the “right things” in the yard and having dogs, especially since the whole reason we live here in this house is the yard it provides my dogs.

Love this. ❤
These ideas are so cute!!!!
Do hair cuts n hair dye hurt environment? I do mine js. I love your new hair it looks adorable. ❤ looks alot better and stylish
I make broth and when it’s done I’ll use a spider to scoop out a bunch of the large pieces out first then I strain it cause I’m scared it will splash
I admire you so much
I loved this! Thank you!

yooo if you're in Florida all those fallen branches/trimmed trees from the hurricanes can be saved for fires 20:34

Voted early this year ❤️❤️
And I opted not to take the wasteful stickers this year in hopes that they create less demand for next election.
What do you do with the broth now that it's in jars?
I think it has to be a mindset. You have to be a free thinker and okay with not following the influencers. You have to be okay and secure in what you are doing. I love all the seasonal things but at my heart i dont want the chaos or clutter. I dont buy anything to decorate since i dont like decor in general. My neighbors are those people so i enjoy their stuff without it in my space. as far as diet mine doesnt change anymore at the core. we eat the same year round. Clothing i wear the clothes i have IF i add to my closet it has to be because its a must have not a good sale going on.
