As long as the pulling chain is cutting the bark from the inside the dirt is thrown out and away from the tree. With the pushing chain the dirt is being driven into the kerf and stays in contact with the cutters until it eventually is expelled. This is what causes premature wear on the cutters. Am I right in that, or did I miss something?
It isn't a tree that grew into two trees, it's two trees that grew together at the bottom!

You got it! I see a lot of fallers pushing the bark in when doing the back cut. I take great pains to pull the bark off of possible.
