We sailed to Cape Town to book out BUT things went WRONG‼️

  • We sailed to Cape Town
    To check out for our final departure and we had a few things go wrong.
    I was quite confident after taking a look at the marina and our docking spot, the week before sailing down that I would be able to get us through the marina and docked safely. What I hadn’t taken into account was being pushed into the marina by gusts of wind directly behind us. I hadn’t experienced that before and things went horribly wrong but after a total meltdown Robin stepped in and got us safely into the mooring within minutes.
    During the sail we discovered that we needed vacuum breaks on our raw water system because we suspect, after the engine wouldn’t start en-route, that water had got from the exhaust system back into the engine.
    After our initial panic thinking this was going to be a huge problem that would affect our departure date, we calmed down, and with the help of Chris Booke, we managed to get the systems on both engines sorted and left, to return to Saldanha Bay at 7pm in the evening.
    The sails both, to and from Cape Town went very well, we were frozen to the bone and Teagan and I got pretty seasick but the trip was a great experience.
    After buying a boat in South Africa, Robin had always talked about how he would love to leave Cape Town and see Table Mountain in his rear view mirror - well leaving Cape Town at 7pm we were blessed with a beautiful sunset and the experience was pretty spectacular - bucket list item ✅ for Robin.

    The nice thing about shake down cruises is that you find the things that need fixing NOW. The not so nice thing about shake down cruises is that you can end up shaken up. You guys are doing really well and clearly have the skills to go and sail oceans. Owning, and using, a boat is much the same as owing a Ferrari; every time you go somewhere there is something to fix.

      So true - we came to the realization months ago, that even tho' our systems are all pretty much brand new, there are always issues that need to be attended to - what we need to do is stop getting so emotional and panicking when things happen. But we are getting there😉. Thanks for watching.

    I would say your shakedown passage was a complete success, you found the issues you didn't know you had, that's what a shakedown passage is for. Now you might have planned it as a shakedown passage, but it essentially was.

    • @SailingSaoirse22
      @SailingSaoirse22  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It certainly was and as horrible as it is to find issues - would way rather find them whilst still in SA waters rather than when crossing the ocean.

    Great video! And that's why we do a shake down. To find and fix any problems because once you head out and are in the Big Blue you want all the Major stuff to be working. The small stuff can be fixed under way or at your next stop. But don't worry, everyone has the same Anxiety over casting the lines and taking the Big first steps off the dock and safe harbor. But that is what Memories and Adventures are made of. The heart beats a bit faster and you feel Life. Not knowing what is ahead and can't wait to find out!
    So just remember Everyone Goes though the same thing. Before you know it ya'll will be old salts and look back on it and have a Good Laugh and stories to tell.
    Thank you again for a Great video. I am on the Edge of my Seat waiting for the next one!
    So until then Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii!

      Thanks so much for your inspiring comment - yes - the stress is getting real now🤣 - 3 days till departure but we have faith it will all just fall into place. Like you say - we trying not to stress about the small stuff and will figure that out later, it’s the big stuff that counts.
      Thanks so much for following along and keep the comments and insight coming😃
      The adventure starts soon😬👍🏻👍🏻

    Nice video guys. We are sitting in the V&A planning our departure. I have the same engines 3ym30Ae model. Your raw water strainer is at the right height. It’s good fitting anti syphon valves . As far as your raw water impellers go you need to religiously change them every year. I keep a pile of them spare as well as all the bearings and seals to rebuild a pump as when they start leaking it’s a pain

    • @SailingSaoirse22
      @SailingSaoirse22  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike - thanks for that - yes, we have spare impellers now and will be sure to keep an eye on them.
      Do you have a possible departure date yet, we are aiming at this Saturday, 12th Feb, unless the conditions change. Your route? Namibia or straight to St Helena? We have decided to go direct to St Helena Island, then heading across to Brazil.

    What can you tell us of Cape Town. Is it a good place to get boat work accomplished? Parts, tradesmen, boat yard, price??? Thanks!

    • @SailingSaoirse22
      @SailingSaoirse22  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bill, we have done all our work ourselves so its difficult to comment on the yard, prices and workmanship in Cape Town. I do know a number of people that take their boats there for work so assume its good. I can find out and get back to you. I was surprised when we were at Royal Cape Yacht Club, just how many boats were jammed into the work area so I would imagine you need to book if you are needing work to be done within a specific time.
      Will you be visiting SA? Passing through? let me know if there is anything we can find out for you in the next couple of days before we depart on the weekend.
