Sailing Saoirse
South Africa
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 21 ธ.ค. 2019
Hi there!
We are a South African family finishing a refit of an Island Spirit yacht. For now we are based in Langebaan, South Africa and we have great plans to explore the open ocean for the next few years.
We are originally from Ballito, owned a home that we built ourselves in 1993 - grew our family, made many memories and decided to sell up after 25 years.
This wasn't a rash decision on our part - it took 7 years of planning and organizing to be able to make this all happen, another year and a half to find the right boat and now another good few months working on her. We are now the proud new owners of Saoirse (sur-sha) a 38ft Island Spirit. Our Yacht originally was built in 1999 and capsized. The previous owner started the refit in 2010 and we took over in 2019.
Follow our videos of trying to get our new home up and running and hopefully soon we will be able to share our adventures.

SAILING SAOIRSE - What, how and why our journey came to an end.
I apologise in advance for the amount of tears in this video, it has taken us a while in the hopes that we could make it through it a little bit stronger but it doesn't seem possible.
Robin was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2023.
Saoirse was a dream and a goal that we set in motion 13 years ago. We decided to sell up everything we owned in South Africa and find a yacht that we could sail the world on. It took us a good few years to get the plan in motion and everything sold up. Eventually in 2019 we found Saoirse, a bare fibreglass hull that needed a lot of work and TLC. We took on the challenge thinking “we could get this done in 6 months… fast forward to 2 and a half years later. After her complete refit we started our journey across the Atlantic from Cape Town to Brazil. When arriving in Brazil Robin started showing some odd signs of what could possibly be a hernia. Later on we started to notice a funny looking mole on his leg that would disappear every now and then and then reappear. Eventually it reappeared and it started growing. We made our way up to French Guiana and then Trinidad where Robin developed a DVT (deep vein thrombosis). The doctors mentioned to us that this could be the sign of cancer, often times a tiny piece of a tumour will break off and make its way into the blood stream. After receiving treatment for the DVT, Robin insisted he didn’t want to explore it any further and told us that we had worked so hard to get here, this wasn’t going to stop our cruising dream. We set off up the Caribbean island chain and got to see some incredible places, this was not without constant fighting about steps going forward with this cancer diagnosis.
Eventually when we turned Saoirse around for hurricane season and we started our journey back down south, Karen and Robin decided to head home to South Africa.
Watch the video where we go into much more depth into the situation.
Please remember to be kind, everyone has a right to their own choice in medical care , treatment and options.

This video was difficult to make in so many ways. Packing up Saoirse in the hopes of selling her was tough, we wanted to leave her in new owner ready condition which meant clearing her out, deep cleaning, fixing and making sure she was in tip top shape. It is always a difficult task in Trinidads heat. It was an extremely hard goodbye, any boat owner will know that a boat is more than an object....
Sailing Saoirse - Turning back SOUTH for hurricane season 🌪🌊
มุมมอง 1.7Kปีที่แล้ว
We turned back south from Antigua towards our end destination - Trinidad. We wanted to get south for hurricane season and to try to get Saoirse hauled out and safe as early as possible in the season. We planned for a good enough weather window to allow us to get to Grenada while stopping every evening to anchor for the night. We planned the distances and travel time perfectly, we didn’t get to ...
The beautiful waters of Antigua - Falmouth Harbour 💙
มุมมอง 978ปีที่แล้ว
Antigua has had some of the clearest water we’ve every experienced! We anchored in Falmouth harbour for about 5 weeks so Colben and Teagan could complete their sailing courses they needed for their new job in the BVI’s. We enjoyed amazing views off of the back of Saoirse, we had eagle rays, sting rays and turtles come past daily! The best thing was switching the under water lights on at night a...
Sailing from Guadeloupe to Antigua💙
มุมมอง 1.3Kปีที่แล้ว
We left Guadeloupe and headed further north to Antigua 💙 We waited for a “perfect” weather window to head across in but the weather Gods were against us ONCE AGAIN. We headed out expecting great conditions only to be hit with squall after squall and big seas that were beam on. It was completely manageable it was just completely opposite of what we were expecting. We’ve gotten used to the fact t...

Sailing Saoirse ⛵️Guadeloupe - 36knot winds‼️ Incredible underwater life & Magical hot springs 🏝
มุมมอง 841ปีที่แล้ว
We left Les Saints for Guadeloupe, we had beautiful wind and calm seas. We arrived at Bouillante, a little town on the west side of Guadeloupe. We had heard of the amazing hot springs that flow into the bay and we had to go and try it out. The hot springs are supposedly full of nutrients and minerals and are believed to have healing properties. We dived off of a tiny little island off of the so...
Les Saintes - the Quaintest Island we've been to!
มุมมอง 917ปีที่แล้ว
Les Saintes is a group of 5 islands off of the south coast of Guadeloupe. It was one of our top 5 places we’ve stopped at in the Caribbean. It is quaint, occasionally quiet, and beautiful to explore. With the islands being so small it is easy to walk around or rent an electric bicycle. Only 2 of the 5 islands is inhabited and the population of all of the islands is around 3500 people. The town ...
Sailing Saoirse - Exploring magical Martinique ⛵️🍹
มุมมอง 3.1Kปีที่แล้ว
Our time in Martinique was great. We arrived at St Anne's from Dominica and set anchor in the beautiful spacious bay. 'Checking in' on the French islands is super easy. We went ashore and found the little coffee shop that had a small room off to the side, where we went onto a computer, put in all our boat details and crew list, printed out our official document, paid the €3 for the shop owner t...
Island hopping from Bequia to Martinique ⛵️
มุมมอง 895ปีที่แล้ว
We left Bequia and started our journey to Martinique. We didn’t want to do the crossings at night, so we broke our journey up and stopped in St Vincent and St Lucia along the way. We had been watching the weather and decided to take a gap that was showing very good conditions. Unfortunately, yet again, it wasn’t the conditions we were reading. The swell and wave intervals were shorter than pred...

I have been wondering what had happened. Thank you for your update. May your father rest in peace.
RIP SAILING HERO❤
Sending you all so much love! We treasure the time we spent with you xx
😢❤
So many people work flat out their whole life and never get a chance to live their dreams, Robin managed to buck that trend and lived his, I'm sure as he passed he was happy and content with what he achieved in life, hopefully celebrating this knowledge will make it easier for you all 🤞We all have to pass some time, at least Robin lived a good life and left the world a better place than he found it 👍
This family is an inspiration to all of us who have dreams. I am privileged to call Karen my friend and she is an incredible person as are her beautiful children ❤️ this family has been through so much but always with dignity and love. I cant wait to be with to be with you all again in the BVI ❤lots of love to you all xxxx
We love you too ❤️❤️❤️ we can’t wait to have you in the BVI with us ❤️
Thank you to all of you for taking us along on your journey. Throughout Robin was the quiet, steady presence, and mostly kept himself in the background. This video is a very fitting tribute to Robin and shows so clearly the beautiful, closely knit, family you have. So clear to see you all respect each other and are open to each of you being who you truly are. And with giving each other that space come the fiery moments that act as a signpost to the beautiful times that make the blessed memories. You shared those blessed times with us in your videos. It is very special that you are able to share with us those very tough times you had. I wish you all the very best for the future. I'll stay subscribed because I hope to see the odd update from your lovely family at some point.
Thank you for always following along on our journey with us 🤍 and thank you for your incredibly kind words, it means so much ⛵️❤️
So sorry for your loss! RIP My wife and I are in the same “boat” We started sailing Hobies in 2000, my wife got breast cancer in 2016, sold our house in 2021, bought a 38 foot Morgan and started sailing offshore California Channel Islands. Just getting the hang of it, falling in love with our boat, living on it, then boom cancers back, stage four. The big difference is my wife could no longer sail or even live on the boat. So cancer literally took the wind out of our sails. Treatments have made her somewhat comfortable by not really, so no chance of sailing, not even short day sailing. Now we have the boat for up sale, the dream is gone. Moving on, we’re still vertical, so just struggling to cope with our new reality. Best to you all, whatever you do.
We are so sorry to hear this! Our hearts are breaking for you both. Please take in every tiny moment you guys get together. We hope your wife is doing okay. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time 🤍🤍🤍
I’m so very sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing. What an amazing man with a truly inspiring story. Thanks for making this video - it must have been very tough for you. We hope you carry on making videos - your journey continues ❤!
Thank you 🙏🏼 maybe when Karen gets to the Caribbean we can continue with a few videos of around the BVI and where life leads us next ⛵️
@ 100%
A lovely video that’s really hard to make 😪. It was August last year when my dad passed away at 92 during an afternoon sleep in his bed at home which was a comfort to us. My mom went through a similar path to Robin a few years before and it’s soul destroying seeing how the cancer destroys a loved one’s body😢. It was great to get to meet you all in Trinidad and shew was it really seemingly such a long Hurricane season. What memories you all made together hey. Not many can say that ! It will be super if Karen ends up in the BVIs with you 2. We have just arrived in the Philippines and started to explore this part of the world. SE Asia has some lovely waters and it’s crazy to think we have been out here from the Caribbean for 2 years already.
Hi Mike, we are so sorry to hear about your dad 💔 but what a peaceful way to go. We will always remember our special times with you and Maja and how much my dad LOVED maja’s baking 💗 we hope to be able to catch up with you guys some time over here in the Caribbean. Enjoy your adventures in Asia ⛵️
So sorry for your loss. What a tough journey! But I'm so glad you had such wonderful moments together and I'm sure that your Dad would be delighted that you're living a wonderful life. All the best for the future.
Thank you, it means a lot 🤍
I am sorry for your loss. And remember life goes on. So live it to its fullest. And I believe your Dad did just that. So I know he would want ya'll to do the same. So keep making videos. We love to keep up with your family and to see what ya'll are getting up too. I watch all your videos and couldn't wait for the next one. I was hoping to see your sails ⛵️ on the Horizon someday from our lanai. And it could happen. Ok ya'll stay safe out there and live life. Until next time, Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii!
Thank you for your kind words 🙏🏼 thank you for always being such a loyal subscriber and following our journey for the last few years. We will try and carry on with videos when my mom gets here 🤍
I'm so sorry for your loss. I wondered what happened. Prayers for your healing and much love from the Usa.
Thank you 🙏🏼 🤍
Wonderful! Thank you so much ❤
🙏🏼
What an inspirational story of love and wanting to live life to the fullest and to do it alongside the family you love is so special. So glad you all made amazing memories together. I have enjoyed following your story especially as I had met your family an a few occasions while living in Ballito many years ago If any of you are ever on the east coast of the USA stop in and say hi We live just outside of Wilmington NC Keep living the life he wanted for you.
Thank you for your kind words🤍 and thank you for your offer of a visit! We might just take you up on that one day! 😁
I hope you carry on his dream.
We will 🤍🪽
Miss your family adventures….all the best, thanks, Andrew
Baie sterkte daar ons bid vir jul mooi bly
Guys, so sorry to hear of the passing of robin. While it is hard to accept, his wish that he lived his remaining time without the crippling effects of chemo was his choice. Unless it is better than 75% chance of success it is hard for anyone to undergo that treatment. Trust me I witnessed that myself with my dad 40 years ago and it still haunts me to this day to see his being destroyed and then his bowels and stomach destroyed with crippling pain. Rest in peace Robin, you are in gods hands now and safe from pain and suffering.
Thank you 🙏🏼 we respected his decision and wouldn’t trade the many amazing months we had with him before things started going downhill. We are so sorry to hear that you went through a similar thing with your dad. It is not easy watching your loved ones go through it 💔
Your family is so loving and is an inspiration for all of your viewers. I really enjoy watching your adventures and very sad to hear of the passing of your father. I am from Trinidad and Tobago , but grew up and in Canada, after watching your videos in Trinidad I subscribed to your channel and have been following since. Your father spent his final years with the people who ment the most to him separated from the rest of the world on a beautiful yacht. ❤
Thank you for your kind words 🙏🏼 Thank you for following along with us on this journey 🤍
thoughts are with you
🙏🏼
❤❤❤ we love you all so much! It would be amazing to have more TH-cam updates on your sailing travels and expeditions ❤
🤍🪽🤍
I am so sorry for your loss.
Thank you 🙏🏼
I never met Robin , but I followed the channel for a long time. I admired the quiet man of the channel. He was a true craftsman who chose to live his dream ! Hold on to those happy memories. Remember the good times!
Thank you for your kind words 🙏🏼
Enjoy the season ⛵️
My ocean fishing advice for you guys: Get a container you can seal, fill it up with fresh engine or mechanic oil and put all your hooks, swivles, hard plastic baits with metal parts submerged into it, when you are not fishing. All corrosion will be paused, as long it is in the oil. When you are hardcore ocean fishing like you guys, you need to take care of your gear like no one else.
Mother looks exactly like daughter 😮
Denver the last dinosaur 🦕
Unfortunately many Trinidadians do not appreciate the beauty of our country. In What condition did you find the beach at Scotland Bay.
Teagan you sound like that lady from 60 minute Australia 🇦🇺 ❤
Very nice job .. really good
I've always thought of buying a boat to cruise with my family... but recently by your video and videos like yours gives me confidence do it thank you ❤❤❤
absolutely paradise! I can't help but wonder what happens with the plastic wine glasses and glass bottles from rum and plastic containers... often to be present in the views and videos of those to privilege to be able to visit these paradises... would imagine that most of these islands have their own "dump areas" it just occurs to me to wonder what happens with all of the debris from our "civilisation"... cheers from Toronto!
Gloves???
Please tell me what is the height of the central bridge of the catamaran above the water?
Mesmerizing footage, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it 💙
And soulful music in this video
You are very beautiful people, good luck to you!
Very Very good job!!!
Thank you 🙏🏼
Hello there Saoirse! First, let me thank you for showcasing my beautiful home on your channel! I'm particularly impressed by the fact that you've not only shared your touristic experience, but also highlighted some of the issues that has adversely affected tourism in our country for many years. Much more can and should be done to protect and conserve our little slice of paradise. Far too long, foreigners have enjoyed too many 'freedoms' in our country and it has stunted the growth of our tourism and economy as a whole. I've lived on several continents and tourism in these larger territories is better marketed and well-priced. There's absolutely NOTHING free where tourism is concerned. Tourist come from countries with stronger currencies and much larger economies, and what they spend in SVG is considerably less than what I spend in their country as tourist, for the same or a lesser experience. I hope SVG remains on your bucket list and you encourage many others to visit!
Great video 👍👍👌
Thank you 😄
Why not add a water maker when doing the refit? Seems like a real pain point could be taken care of with it. Plus you're not burning diesel.

did the beach in Cabedelo had clear blue water so you could see the bottom of the ocean ?
Sorry to hear about your dad. My condolences.
From our family to yours prayers and condolences ❤ thank you for allowing us to watch your lives please be safe and keep us informed on your lives ❤❤❤❤❤
You've got a 50 year old who's never met any of you sitting here with tears running down his face . When Robin was saying goodbye to Denver , it really finished me . I'm so sorry for your loss .
Thank you 🤍🙏🏼
Don't go your separate ways! Keep going! I'm sure Robin would have wanted you guy to keep it going!
Unfortunately we have to get on with jobs and our lives but Colben and Teagan are carrying on with their sailing adventures in the BVI. They are currently working on charter catamarans there. I might go and join them in the future but for now we unfortunately can’t afford to keep Saoirse 💔
