Sailing from Cape Town to St Helena EP 1

  • We finally leave Cape Town after spending 18 months getting Avanti ready for our circumnavigation. With abnormal weather patterns we sail more to the West than the normal route to our first stop, St Helena Island. We quickly get into a routine of cooking, eating, sleeping, being on watch and washing out of a bucket. We eat like kings and savour some amazing sunrises, but what blocked our heads?

Hey guys - Nice video! Makes me jealous! Your depth gauge isn't broken, because you are not getting a strong return from the bottom in the deep water, it is hearing a false return. once it gets shallow it will work again.

We have figured out when there is strong currents that creatures layers of waters with different temperatures and densities the depth sounder picks up these interfaces between the layers and gives a false reading.

Haha good comment, but us sailing yachts very rarely go straight to our destination. Its normally tacking or gybing our way there. Like in this case. We were heading dead west for the first couple of days to have better wind angle a few days later

What's a comfortable budget to start sailing as a hobbie with the goal of eventually sailing to other countries?
I have seen boats for R300 000 and some over a million. And you might still need to repair, upgrade or replace a few modules. So R2 million?
Im looking for a realistic entery level amount but strong enough for inter continental voyages.

@@mbusocele1558 Hi. If you buy a boat in South Africa, you could get a cruising monohull (including upgrades) which is capable of crossing an ocean for around R1,300,000. But it highly depends on what equipment and comforts you would like to have onboard. Hope this helps.
