Of all M2TW mods yours feels like a complete, polished game on same engine! I had a blast playing as West-aligned Gûndabad for the last two weeks ! I have conquered half of Angmar and besieged Karn Düm, scuffled with Anduin for Goblin Town and other contested lands; manage to get it through some raids and diplomacy, and even got Anduin back as allies after the peace treaty; I have suffered near total defeat from Moria south of Imladris, but manage to break all four of my generals and family members, including Azolg and his priceless archers. My only qualm with this mod I'll have to quit current campaign to try other factions! Thank you for this experience, Mellon!

I started the campaign and made the mistake of taking the rebel towns in the Vale first. I spent the next 100 turns slowly grinding down a triple coalition of Valesmen, Wood Elves and Dwarves. Winning pyrrhic victories against full stacks every other turn... All over underdeveloped, unwalled villages that barely contributed 200-300 gold each. Don't make my mistake and listen to the council missions. Go for Burzakul, Dain's Halls, Onazar and then Erebor to make some good money. Screw the Vale's villages.

    Regarding the combat mechanic:
Ability of the siege engines to kill multihitpoints units is coded in stats of their projectiles, and it is fixed amount of hitpoints damage for a successful attack roll. If aroll of attack against defense result in a wound, then fixed amount of wounds will be subtracted from a model.
It can be implemented for ordinary arrows or bolts too. Years ago I have built my personal modification around it with every unit having at least 3 hitpoints to prolong mele combat without unreasonable high defence values, but with possibility of one arrow hit kill for ordinary model. My goal was to create a system resulting in historical like results, with defeated army rather routed than slaughtered if not fully surrounded.
There is also a trick to implement multiwound hit to charge and charge defense - if a weapon will have shortspear ability, then an attack roll will be implemented during charge or charge defense until successful defense roll. With this implemented there is a possibility for cavalry units to kill multiwounds targets with single charge, which is cool for strong knights units (they can be utilized as troll counters).

You could make Gundabad an orc faction with heavy warg focus. Like an evil Rohan, with a lot of warg cavalry. That is one of the things we know from the hobbit book about Gundabad that they had a lot of warg riders. I was hoping you would go this way, but I still like the current implementation of Gundabad.

On the other hand I think Angmar has become a really interesting faction with their redone unit roster and I love the Orcs of Mount Gram being mounted raiders.

    Suggestion:
Make Moria more unique by playing to the designs and characteristics shown in the books and films, specifically Dwarven materials, Balrog influences and growing links to Isengard and Sauron.
They live in the greatest Dwarven mansion with access to mithril and a lot of dead dwarves. You could make their upper tiers shamanic leaders and chiefs decked out in looted dwarven gear (Gundabad could wear Angmarim or other human armour, which would likely fit better, or something from the first age).
Make Goblin Town the home of 'trash goblins', make Gundabad the savage brute glass cannons, and make Moria a semi-organised and semi-armoured goblin faction.
To make goblins tougher, give them more plentiful/early game wargs and trolls, perhaps linked to a specific settlement. This gives them another niche that makes them enticing for the player.

    • @dusk6159
      @dusk6159 4 ปีที่แล้ว

If tbis must be done, I would say a mix/25% of that, with all the settlements still building weak goblins and orcs hordes but some having some niche, without taking away nothing from the trash and the patented trait of the Orcs of the Misty Mountains so.

I always hate it when people complain and put down people who add and expand Tolkiens universe. Like that's what he wanted, he didn't want what he said to be taken as scripture and that nothing else could possibly be acceptable. He wanted his stories and mythology to expand and grow with everyone who reads it. So next time someone gets mad at the team for adding stuff to the lore, just know you're fulfilling Tolkiens dream and they're the exact kind of person he didn't want.

I am now on my third attempt at beating an orcs of gundabad campaign. However, I think I have finally gotten a solid start and can potentially win. Man is this faction hard for me though. Yeah, they have good troops, but they r expensive and replenish slowly. Furthermore, u r fighting 2 wars simultaneously at game start: dwarves of eribor and vale of the anduin.
Over my course of trying to figure out how to win, u cannot be defensive. If play defensively, u will always lose. Gather your entire turn 1 army and take buzakul. Also on turn one, train as many units as possible. Build mines early for income, because u r GOING to need it. Then, use your entire army and take dain’s halls. U cannot fail in taking it early. I could try and go for goblin town, but it is so far away at game start that it really isn’t worth it. U really need dains halls first.
Once u take dains hall, replenish your armies, continue building mines and buildings that reduce cost and build time of all other buildings. Those will be vital to building an economy fast. Then, u need to play aggressively and fight both the dwarves and the vale early on. The vale r really annoying because they can train units so fast. Yeah, they aren’t too hard in single battles, but they churn out troops way faster than u. The dwarves r just really strong. But, don’t focus on either one of them and neglect the other because each of them have allies near them. If u focus the vale, then the woodland elves will instantly attack u. If u focus the dwarves, dale will attack u. This aspect is what makes this faction so hard to play. In my campaign, I am currently at war with 6 factions all attacking me simultaneously. It is very hard to win and I can easily see y they always die quickly when the ai are controlling them.
Once u take dains halls, u really want to take the dwarven castle nearby (starts with an “o,” but don’t remember the name). That will hurt the dwarves early on and they won’t pester u too much for a while if u do so. Also, don’t take an army directly down to goblin town as it is just too far away. Work your way down by taking vale settlements as u go down. But only take settlements on the west of the anduin river or u will have to deal with the elves. Same idea applies to the dwarves. Be mindful not to border the elves or dale or U will have to fight so many factions simultaneously.
Don’t really worry about taking rebel settlements to the west of goblin town either. Angmar, high elves, Dunedin, Bree, and such really don’t bother u. It is the other factions u have to worry about. A piece of advice, try to get rid of the vale as soon as possible. They really are the most annoying faction to deal with. The elves and the dwarves have very low replenish times and thus they are a bit easier to beat.
Think about building the buildings that provide garrisons when attacked. Your settlements will constantly be bombarded, so those buildings can really help in the defense.
Still, the faction is fun as they have really nice troops. But this is not an easy campaign at all. U will almost never be fighting only single opponents which make them very hard to play. Still, I think I may have finally gotten a winning game and im so proud of myself! Such a tricky campaign

I really disagree with the difficulty rating. As someone who isn’t super great at the game, it is pretty hard. In my game, I allied with angmar, and that was it. If played as such, fighting perhaps 2,3,4 or maybe even 5 or 6 factions simultaneously is hard. Sure, I might be able to use a diplomat to make things easier, I just refuse to ally and make diplomatic relations as much as possible. Guess I’m creating my own difficultly at that point, but still

In the previous version, new generals would have the "orc" trait rather than the "snow orc", even if they're children of the snow orc generals that exist at start.
This is extremely noticeable because the "orc" trait gives -10% movement points and "snow orc" gives +10% movement points. It also seems a little bit strange that only the three starting generals get this racial trait.

I just wanted to say that I very much agree with and respect your decision as the "head of the modding team for divIDE and conquer", to try and maintain as much "lore accuracy" as you can. I'm sure it can be fairly frustrating at times, and can get in the way of potentially cool and creative gameplay features. But also to that, I believe that sometimes taking liberties with the accuracy of a universe is necessary, and very beneficial, not only to allow more unique interpretations, such as all the sub mods and fan-made lore with the Nazgul backstories for example, but also very fun and interesting factions, characters, and history, with Angmar and Gundabad being more unique and varied, or the existence of the Ardunaim, and even the potential second Balrog in Buzra-dum. While I can see why some would snob over keeping all interpretations of Tolkien's work as accurate as possible, the world of LoTR and Arda is absolutely massive, and even for a man as talented and commited to world building as Tolkien was, there are always gaps that can and should be filled (lore, factions, events) by those who are also dedicated to the universe, such as yourself, the DaC team, and all those that add there own ideas to the universe.

Both early and late Gundabad armies offer so much.
Wall of snow-orc spears, who are decent enough to hold the line, with snow orc raiders, who deal so much damage, provided you keep them out of missile fire. Archers are super decent as well. That and marauders make for a very well balanced army, that can wreck early Anduin and Angmar, if you wish to go for them. Dwarves are a bit harder, but your units have high enough attack to be a fair fight. Elves can be a pain for their archers, since your units have very low armor stat. If you run your early units through the last tier of Avengers guild, they are viable even in late game (Spears have 20 defense and 6/5 attack, and are quite cheap).
Blackshield units do work very well with each other, especially when paired with marauders and Mount Gram units, if you get them. If you slap on them Scavanged dwarven armor, even their armor is amazing. Overall very decent, if not very impressive. They destroy Anduin units and can hold their own againts dwarves. Arrows from elves are not as troublesome at this tier.
Where Gundabad excells is the uber tier. Bolg's Champions murder heavily armored units like nothing, as well as Orc Avengers. Pale uruks have ridiculous attack, and will hold for a very long time, especially with dwarven armor. Just this would be good enough, but once you start putting out half-trolls and snow trolls, that will murder anything and disrupt enemy lines. Dont forget to put dwarven armor on half trolls, they are terribly squishy otherwise. Overall, there's nothing that will stand in your way. You can slam pale uruks in a shildwall into a First legion and lose maybe a third of them. Bolg's Champions will easily defeat heavily armored units with ease. Overall, one of the best late game armies I had the plasure to play.

The top level of the avengers guild is amazing, and you definitely should retrain your units there if you can. Your blackshiled units will have 11 armor instead of 7, Half trolls 10 instead of five, snow-orc spears 8 from meagre 3. I believe only your wargs do not get a lot out of it.
In my campaign i ran most of my units through Dain's Halls and later trough Moria and Erebor to get the scavanged dwarven plate and weapon upgrade. It makes even your early tier units somewhat competetive in the late game, while your blackshields and top units get the armour they tend to lack.
I feel like it's most useful for your half-trolls. Their main weakness is arrowfire, and having 10 armor instead of five makes a huge difference.

If I recall correctly, in the first age, there was Húrin, who held of an entire army alone for long enough that his side could retreat. He fought for so long that his axe literally melted in his hands.
And his brother(?) Huor, who killed twenty trolls.
And Finrod Felagund, who slew a werewolf with his bare hands.
And Glorfindel and Echthelion, who each achieved a mutual kill dueling a Balrog, just like Gandalf. Glorfindel was even sent back to Middle Earth similarly to Gandalf.
And Fingolfin, who dueled the Dark Lord Morgoth himself, one-on-one, and though Fingolfin lost, he injured Morgoth seven times, and permanently crippled the Dark Lord's leg.
The first age had some iron-hard Badasses with a capital B. :P

An in universe reason why Isengard Uruk armour is similar to Gundabad Uruk armour could be that many of the Orcs that came to Isengard would have been from the north, and Gundabad is the stronghold of the Orcs in the north. Maybe some Orc smiths used their experience making the Pale Uruk armour to make the Uruk-hai armour.

    • @names_are_useless

  • @bigtroll8915

In terms of the films there is a pretty large difference between the uruks of Isengard, and those of Gundabad. As far as I'm aware, even in the early concepts for the hobbit trilogy, no Isengard equipment or costumes were used for Azog/Bolg's orcs. Though both armies have a grey plate armor aesthetic, their styles are very distinct from one another, especially the motifs they have in their helmets and armor. If you were going for a more film oriented appearance for the Pale uruks, it really doesn't work all that well considering its very obvious that they have Isengard assets, such as the shield.

I will say this: the explanation of Gundabad being closely related to First Age Orcs (Orcs that had to fight against Elves and Dwarves at their highest points in history), beholden to Melkor, is actually quite brilliant. The nice touch of Burzakul being nearby (Utumno) is also a nice piece of Lore that adds more to why these Orcs are the way they are.

I do not consider Gundabad a 2 on the difficulty scale.
Starting with a miniature army and a single settlement, unable to compete with your opponents who make more money than you and can produce armies much faster than you can and keep showering you with full stacks.
My last playthrough I spent 30 turns defending sieges at Dain's halls and Framsburg / Eorlstone. Every time I'd beat a 13-20 division army, the enemy would just shove another one in my face 3 turns later. Meanwhile I was sitting there with all of my unit recruitments expended.
Definitely not a beginner friendly faction.

I think that the way the attack/defense roll works is the game rolls a dice and then adds the relevant stats to the result. So a unit with 10 attack rolls ,say, a 50 and adds 10 to that. The defender then rolls and adds his defense stats to the result. This is all just theory really. I once saw a mithlond noble get hit with a ballista bolt and not even flinch so there HAS to be RNG involved, I think.

I don't understand the way the defence skill is distributed. Some of their low tier units have 9 defence skill same as the pale uruk. Playing as Khazad Dum I also noticed that most of their units have more defence skill than the mid-range tier of my units (Deeping guard have 5). They are really hard to take on because of that and I feel like defence skill is more important in melee than the armour value.

But Melkor can't create. Illuvitar won't let him. It's why he threw his tantrum in the first place. So he warps and twists anything he can either out of spite or because it's the closest thing he can manage. If Melkor couldn't before he was put in his time out cell. As the Great Deceiver, Sauron wouldnt be able to either, which is why he enjoyed engineering the downfall of Numernor so much. Orcs are(unfortunately) living, breathing creatures conditioned to serve as henchmen by their very social condition and are biologically compatible with humans(and probably elves).

I understand why they have the Sauron aesthetic to their UI (limited by number of cultures), but I don't understand why they need to have any Sauron representations on their Faction Banner or Units.
