@@100StarWars oh man you really need to do Bane...he is my favorite sith Lord...I have a theory...
At the end of the Bane Trilogy, Darth Bane grabs Darth Zannahs hand...Bane had a twitch in his hand...Zannahs left with that twitch...name transferred his essence into Zannah...and so goes the Bane dynasty...and that dynasty never ended...I remember something about Plagious master having a problem with that same hand at some point...and I remember himself having a similar issue...I don't have an answer for Palpatine yet...but Anakin lost that hand...Luke lost that hand........it's not one that a lot of people like to think about but #1 the host has to be willing or weaker minded...Bane was extremely strong willed and I think could probably overpower or "deal" with most of the sith Lords...deal as in work alongside or use their minds to his benefit...#2 if the host isn't willing there is always the risk of defeat...but the fact that every sith Lord all the way to Skywalker had that hand issue...well...it's worth a thought I think...

The mystery surrounding Peragus is brilliantly executed, climaxing with Sion walking down that dark hallway on the Harbinger. It's foreboding. The "run here, decode that, run back there" nature of it is a bit annoying, but the narrative of the level is really well done, IMO. Also, I laugh every time I do the space walk. "Let's take the animation and speed from the first game and just crank it up 10x. That'll look fine." 🤣

      @suprisebitch99 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

I agree with everything you said about the build up with Peragus but I think running around the harbinger part, actually adds more to the thrilling tension. The plot continues to move and you know what’s lurking in the ship but the game keeps adding more quests for you to do before you’re able to move forward and that’s the intense part. The combination of a growing fear being inside the ship and the anxiety of wanting to get out of it as fast as you can but can’t cause you’re running around going back and forth.

Obsidian used to specialize in 1 thing: making low-effort sequels that killed franchises. They killed two great Bioware franchises, KOTOR and Neverwinter Nights. I still can't forgive them for NWN2, as I was a persistent world developer in the original NWN and they broke multiplayer through bad choices and utter incompetence in NWN2. NWN1 actually outlived NWN2 by around 8 years.

Guess I'm part of the odd group then because I greatly prefer Peragus over Taris.
Taris to me is little more than a city buzzing with life. But Peragus is this mystery where you wake up, everyone is dead, all the droids are hostile, "Something" is hunting you, sabotage and disrepair everywhere. You need to somehow get off this rock. How? Why? Where?
I think you hit the nail on the head when you described the theme for Peragus: Despair.
The cutscene showing you are being hunted by the stealthed assassins, gives you this sense of dread. Never knowing when or where they could show up, but they are always watching, always following you.

Peragus seems like much less despair than Taris. You can FEEL the despair in the air at all levels of Taris. All these people know their planet's good days are behind them, with it no longer being a major trading stop. Even the "rich" people on the surface know this. They all know their world is dying.

Oh, I absolutely adore the visions cave on Korriban. Seeing Malak as a young, charismatic Jedi willing to go to whatever lengths to save lives, the soldiers on Dxun who know they are doomed if you order them to charge across the minefield. One bit that jumps out at me is the body of the Jedi Nebelish who (it is implied) turned on his companions because the visions convinced him that they were his enemies.

Secretly, the entire hope of the galaxy and the Republic was placed on the Telos Restoration Project. If it had failed, more star systems would have seceded like Onderon because of the damage they had sustained during the Mandalorian Wars and the Jedi Civil War. Peragus, while a crappy gas station in space, was supplying Telos and Citadel Station with fuel to support the project. Its destruction put all of that in jeopardy. I actually started my journey into the EU when I was over at my late Aunt's house years ago and I noticed a game sitting on the table called Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. I think it was the cover that caught my eye. It was so different than the Star Wars I was used to. I asked my cousin if I could play it. The atmosphere of Peragus was so alien to me that it almost scared me, but I fell in love. He gave me that game and I went home and turned my Xbox on and stayed up as late as I could and I would wake up so early out of sheer excitement to be able to play it again. Then a few years later, I was maybe 13, I was at Walmart with my mom getting stuff for camp, and I go into the book section and there was a certain book sitting on the shelf. It's title? Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi: Omen. I begged my mom to buy it for me and she caved and agreed to do it. Every time I had downtime, I would open that book and get as far as I could, just soaking it in like a sponge. Those are the two things that had a massive impact on my love of Star Wars. I'm a gamer and a writer and those two had such a huge impact in shaping me into who I am today and even how I see the world. I'm actually working on my own story within the universe. It's technically fan fiction, but I hope one day to be able to see it published, and I've had some very good feedback from friends and fellow lovers of Star Wars, but that's a dream for now.

I think your observations here are quite profound. Kotor 2 really is about "you're where a horrific chain of events took place and most of everything is dead or in shambles and now you must sift through what remains to find meaning in all of it." Peragus was systematically wiped out by HK droids, The Harbinger was wiped out by Sion, Telos was one of the most horrific bombardments the Sith inflicted next to Taris, Korriban's already bloodied history is painted in a new coat of blood as the academy destroyed itself, the Dantooine enclave was horrifically decimated and has become a refugee hotspot, Dxun was a battleground of the Mandalorian Wars, Onderon's people have grown so divided that it has become a police state and teeters on civil war, Nar Shaddaa drowns in the sin and agonized torment of those displaced by the wars, and of course, Malachor V is a graveyard of hellish nightmares of the worst event in galactic history balled together like a dirty bandage that was left to fester.

a lot of us needed this video. and I emphasize your words: my initial feedback on KOTOR 2 was, and I quote, "depressing", and to me this is one of the reasons why this game is so brilliant: it shows a darker face of this universe that we all love. I even dare to say it can even compare itself to our own reality. and all of the philosophy within it... "Apathy is death" for example, it truly can be applied to our own world. it showed us the aftermath of a game that all of us love as well, and how bad things can go and age.
I don´t know if I am allowed to say this, but when we play videogames, some of us want to escape from reality. therefore, if we run up to something depressing, dark, hostile, etc... yeah, I can see why Peragus receives its hatred, but I only wish people could see what it represents and what you emphasized on your video - healing.
don´t get me wrong though, it is a beautiful and painful beggining to a brilliant game. and I'll never get tired of saying that a lot of us need a bit of healing every now and then - making this game a even more personal experience

In my opinion, the opening to KOTOR 2 on Peragus was better than KOTOR 1 on Taris and simply one of the greatest openings to an RPG. After becoming attached to the Ebon Hawk and T3 in the first game, it was crazy to see the state they were in at the beginning. The whole Peragus part of the story is so mysterious and almost creepy in a way. It gives you a real sense of emptiness and really sets the tone for the game while introducing the player to Meetra. Peragus was one of my favorite parts of KOTOR 2

I like the Peragus part of the game. It lays some foundations for the game like the fact The Exchange has a bounty on the Jedi, causing friction in the workforce, with some keen to collect on the bounty. Then there's the HK-50 Assassin Droid who murdered most of the human occupants of the Asteroid to get to Meetra Surik. From memory thanks to the Restored Content Mod he was actually working for G0-T0 but I'm not 100% sure about that.
The most important part Peragus played in the overall story was that they were the suppliers of fuel for Citadel Station above the war ravaged planet Telos IV and after the facility is destroyed your player character is reminded many times by Lieutenant Grenn in particular that without fuel the Citadel Station cannot remain in orbit and the restoration of the planet will fail, meaning other worlds ravaged by war would not get funding by the Republic for restoration projects.
There is a Hutt on Nar Shadda called Vogga who you can negotiate with to supply fuel to Citadel Station after the destruction of Peragus.

My issue with peragus, just like taris, is that it's played almost exactly the same every time (which is worse when half of it is just about getting around 1 force field)
Its absolutely great the first few times through, and I still prefer it over taris (which I always skip now)

Well, that's the inevitable fate of an intro sadly

  • @TheRealAlfkerensky
    @TheRealAlfkerensky 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    They're both very different, too.
In KOTOR, for the whole of Taris, you're playing a Star Wars game without any Force powers. You're thrust into a conflict you don't know, trying to save someone you haven't met, and only after all that, do you begin your "proper" journey. It feels much more like a prologue, like an intro into the game than the game itself.
In KOTOR 2 you're just thrown in, not knowing who you are, where you are, why you're there, who's your friend and who's your enemy.
There's no hand holding, you're gonna have to figure out pretty much everything, decide who to trust, what to do, where to go, etc.
The dialogue options you get also help to set up the game universe. You can decide how the previous game finished, and maybe you don't even notice it the 1st time you play, how you determine the relationships between the characters so early on.
Even the tutorial in the Ebon Hawk shows you the tone of the game, and let's you know that you're gonna have to fend for yourself a lot.

  • @andymac4883
    @andymac4883 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Peragus was my first ever introduction, prologue of KotOR 2 aside, to the Knights franchise as a whole. Yes, I played 2 before 1, because the shop I bought it from had a copy of 2 on hand for a year or so, and none of 1, so that's what I had. Yes, I was confused for most of the game as to the wider context of what was going on; fun fact on that regard, it wasn't until I ran into Mandalorians on Duxn that I stopped mishearing "Mandalorian War" as "Malastarian War" and assuming it was a war with the Gran.
That aside, Peragus hooked me in a way that Taris didn't when I finally played KotOR itself later, and for one big reason; intrigue. Taris was fun, sure, but Peragus was interesting. The mystery of what happened to the miners, the dark industrial environment, the chilling moment when the Harbinger appears and silently docks with the station... It has the aesthetic of a horror film, or a neo-noir.
That being said the intrigue can be part of why it starts to get less fun on later playthroughs. The mystery is already solved, and so much of the atmosphere is lost. All that's left is a sequence that can turn into a bit of a slog. It was already a little too long first time through, and second time... It drags, unfortunately.
Another fun fact RE:my first time playing, this time about the Harbinger's arrival; not knowing that the Hammerhead-class cruiser was a Republic design I saw the weird, almost tribal looking of that elongated bow piece with the bridge window that looked almost like a visor, and my brain immediately went "Oh, that's a _Sith_ looking ship right there".

I consider Paragus one of my favorite video game intro sequences of all time. It just hit me so perfectly , and I can't really put into words exactly why or how. But it instantly hooked me into Kotor2 harder than almost any intro has.
I think part of it was the situation in which I started playing the game though, because I remember the situation just as much as I do the game itself. I had gotten the game earlier in the day after school, having never played the first one and really having no idea what I was getting into. I just really wanted a new game and it sounded cool. But we had a shared PC at the time and my sister was using it all day for school work so I couldn't play it at all that day. So after everyone went to bed I snuck downstairs at 1AM, booted up the PC, and started my journey into Kotor2. In the dark, quiet house when I was supposed to be asleep. I played it all morning and I absolutely did not want to stop. Ended up getting about 2 hours of sleep before school because I couldn't pull myself away from this enthralling mystery in a ship all alone as I sat all alone in the dark.

I always liked both Taris and Peragus. I did find Taris interesting, but Peragus always kept me on my toes and had so many questions. I did love the KOTOR 2 story telling. I always loved stories of the character healing past wounds. Whether you are healing your soul, relationships, etc etc. Peragus was one of my favorite locations because I always liked starting locations that show something terrible happened. It makes me want to investigate. My first playthroughs, I didn't know it was a story of healing until the 2nd or 3rd time. By then, I enjoyed it even more. Also T3-M4 was one of my favorite companions, next to HK-47. T3 was great in KOTOR 2's intro, and through out the story. I also loved when you gained enough influence and stuff with T3, he would show you the recording Bastila left for him on what to do if he and Revan were ever separated.

I think Korriban's theme is one of acceptance, an important part in the healing process. Its point is to show that no matter what happens, keep going, even when everything and everyone around you dies.
By landing on Korriban, Meetra must accept her past and let the horrors of the Mandalorian Wars be put to rest (in this case, bury them in a graveyard)

    • @100StarWars
      @100StarWars  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Meetra, yes. But that would make her narrative theme one of healing, not Korribans ;)

    • @0neCloud

@@100StarWars I think what he is trying to say is, the setting sets up the next step of the theme. Much as your environment shapes you, Korriban is a graveyard, but that graveyard made a reaction in her. So to be more precise, it is the exile's theme of healing that was triggered by Korriban.

  • @beskamir5977

I love the way you are lost, picking through the ruins gradually working out what happened. The little snippets of information from the logs, finding the collapsed passages in the tunnels, the dead miners. So atmospheric. I love it. Even the prologue bit on the damaged Ebon Hawk is worth doing just for the extra background, although I wish you could do it without the constant 'tips'.
I always find though, the next level, after you escape, where you are immediatley arrested, to be where it all slows right down and drags a bit. Telos space station? If anything, I wish you could skip that and get straight into the Ebon Hawk and choose destinations right after leaving Peragus.

I actually really like Peragus. See, it perfectly sets the tone of KotOR 2. Taris in K1 was supposed to show you that galaxy is full of life and full of hope. Peragus... well, you wake up in a Kolto tank. Everyone around you is dead. You learn, that there's a bounty on your head, and that Jedi are mostly dead, save few. And... that's how the rest of the game feels. Depressing, sad and... heavy. Hell, even Korriban feels way more tough to play than in K1.

I was bored, had played through all my other original Xbox games, and tbh I had never played KOTOR 1 before either, so I only ever got KOTOR 2 just because it was a star wars game. After fiddling around with the game for about 15 minutes, I finally figured out that I needed to equip the plasma torch I had looted in order to bash the door open. It was literally and figuratively like opening a door to a whole new world when I finally bashed that first door open, I proceeded to put somewhere around 700 hours into KOTOR 2 as of right now haha, no regrets

But I perfectly understand why KOTOR 2 did it the way it did. Good storywriting, as with the most of the game. And what happens on Paragus is mentioned through the whole game pretty much so it's a very important event. It "echoes" through the story, you could say :P

What drove me mad as a kid but I find brillant now is the fact that you cannot have the full story of the game if you play just one side. The main theme of all locations (well and the game too) is abscence and death of the Force. The game itself very subtly hints at that as you visit planets touched by the Mandalorian Wars.
Prologue - as soon as Exile gets on Harbinger it becomes a dead place, sabotaged by a droid. Soon Ebon Hawk almost faces the same fate, the only one "alive" is T3 who repairs this dead ghost ship and sends it to Peragus.
Peragus - every living thing is dead shortly after Exile arrives. It is only after Exile learns to hear the Force again everything around stops dying and becomes a matter of Exile's choices, guided by Kreia.
Telos - a dead world that is being rebuilt. Carried on by an artificial structure - Citadel.
Telos Polar Academy - a place dead to the Force. None of the Echani are allowed to learn to use the Force and follow a Jedi path. And Atris uses that to shield herself.
Dxun - a ravaged world by Mandalorian Wars.
Dantooine - a ravaged world by Mandalorian Wars.
Korriban - a ravaged world by Jedi Civil War.
Nar Shaddaa - a world that carries pains of those who ran here from both wars, echoing within itself.
M4-78 - world that is dead to the Force, carried by droids.
Malachor V - the place of the cause of the massive echo pain and suffering. Basically a syphon for killing the Force itself.
Onderon, Telos and Dantooine also carry an additional thematic of rebuilding Republic, but that's a carry over from the events of K1.

It is the same with your companions, each of who was touched by the previous events:
      Exile - Mandalorian Wars veteran.
Kreia - Mandalorian Wars veteran, Exiled both by Jedi and Sith.
Bao-Dur - Mandalorian Wars veteran, "Exiled" by himself as he struggles to accept his actions.
Atton - Mandalorian Wars and Jedi Civil War veteran, "Exiled" by himself as he struggles to accept his actions.
Canderous - Mandalorian Wars and Jedi Civil War veteran, "Exiled" by Revan as he went onto the adventure of reuniting the clans, which is a difficult task amongst many merc Mandalorians.
Mira - Mandalorian Wars veteran who lost her only "family" there, and "Exiled" bounty hunter who doesn't kill its targets.
Hanharr - lost his family during Czerka slavery on Kashyyyk. Exile of his own, struggling to accept his own actions, unable to resist power his power.
Handmaiden - lost her family during Mandalorian Wars, "Exiled" Echani, last in rankings of the small servants.
Disciple - lost his "family" who went away on Mandalorian Wars and later on also abandoned his teachings to study what happened.
Visas - lost her "family" due to actions of Nihilus, an "Exile" of her own, last of her people.
G0-T0, T3-M4 and HK-47 are droids and as such - dead to the Force.
So the whole game itself is very Nietzsche-an, isolationistic, dead to any ex-machinas, teaching to rely only on yourself.

Peragus (and the Harbinger by extension) and Korriban are the areas in KotOR2 I am the most unsettled by simply because of how silent and barren they are. The only enemies are machines (on Peragus), very aggressive wildlife (Korriban), and people who are cloaked who only show themselves when you pass through specific sections where they’d have the clear advantage. All of them give the feeling of something from a horror movie, the latter of the three giving a feeling of similar horror characters to Jason from Friday the 13th, Michael Myers from Halloween, and Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street.
And I think why I get so unsettled by those areas in KotOR2 is because I really don’t do well with the horror genre so I’m always tensed up waiting for that surprise jump.

Technically Korriban fits the healing theme as well, in the sense that you encounter Sion there and are introduced to his twisted, Sith version of "healing" (hence why you cannot defeat him there)

Anf if KotOR 2 was that incredible in starting the story, who knows what could await us in KotOR 3, weren't it cancelled.
If KotOR 2 is about healing, KotOR 3 could tell us about precautions to prevent infection at all.

When I first played KOTOR 2 I didn´t really get it and wasn´t really fond of it. But after a few years I tried it again and it was good. And after 10 years after I played it through and through I found the TSLRCM and was mindblowed! Long story short: I love Peragus! Can´t understand how people don´t like it. And I like exactly the fact that it is kinda like a survival horror and dark - but it isn´t dark in a bad way but mysterious. And also the Harbinger was so intense. I also love Telos. Telos is maybe the "Taris" of KOTOR 2. Boring? No. It is very diverse imho. And also I liked to finally see Telos after Carth told us so much about it.
Funny what you spoke about the companians. 😁

My first reaction to Peragus was, "Huh, I feel like I'm playing a Metroid game, not a Star Wars game," and I agree that this game needed to kinda flip the script, as it were, from KotOR1.

Really interesting, well done! I think a point could be made that Korriban has a hint of healing, as there’s that whole “cave experience” that serves as a way for Meetra to confront her time in the Mandalorian wars.

I would say that's the player character narrative healing theme, not the planets! :)
