WOW! Dear Val!! I am so happy to see and hear this!! Just WOW! I love Bach (as you know) and this is just beautiful!! You have my respect and 5 stars! Merci mon ami! Per-Olov
This song is on one of my favourite lists, so I've heard it many many times. It moves me so much; the combination of Bach (my favourite, also the cello suites, I study them on guitar now) and the soulful way you perfom it. So honest, it brought me to tears a couple of times, and obviously I mean that in a very good way. Thanks for posting, greetings from Holland
Dear Val, One of your best, or at least one of my favorites! I loved it, its played with great emotion and as such, this go's to my fav's so I can listen again and again. Bravo, Pascal
@Robinom Here the suite is transposed in C Major (so only the bass 5 (12th course) to retune. There is a nice book of 80 easy pieces for baroque lute, edition of the French Lute Society (vol. 34), with at the end the different tuning of basses according to the different keys, very useful !
@autentik0pip0 Hello, thanks for your message. About scores, the arrangement by Gusta Goldschmidt is published by Tree editions (easy to find on the net). Good luck !
Thank you very much for your words. It goes to my heart when I hear that the music I play goes to someone heart. Of course I know it is first Bach's beautiful composition, but I try to serve it... ;-) All the best Val
This is going to sound cheezy, but I was briefly struggling with a very difficult personal crisis when I happened upon this video. I had a question that had no answer, and it was emotionally crippling. The music you played in that short performance answered that question for me. Thank you.
Hello, I've heard some other transcriptions, for theorbo by Pascal Montheillet, and another one for baroque lute by Nigel North, and listen to some cellist, and I think Gusta's transcription is very faithfull to the original... and yes playable too. Thanks for the comment Regards Val
Hello Thomas, Thanks. Yes Bach's music is above all (even if Weiss is really nice on the lute too !) I enjoy very much playing it. All the best, Valéry
Thanks for the comment, Difference, the most visible one is number of strings : 13 course (two top single and the other double) String length is bigger : 69 cm on this one. What is most difficult is dealing with basses... and of course tuning is a pleasure party (thanks to the electronic tuner ;-) regards, Val
@hermx0 We don't know if lute works are really for lute (or for lute harpsichord) and in fact they are really difficult to play on the instrument (at least for me... some do...) I played the sarabande ob BWV 995...and will play some other but not all... Thanks a lot ;-) Val
your very good. I try learning Bach's lute suites on the classical guitar and find it difficult, it must be even more harder on the lute. Your brilliant!
Thanks to the Late Gusta Goldschmidt, for her beautiful work of transcription, keeping all the spirit of the Cello suites and making it so suitable for the lute. (more to come, but be patient, lot of work in progress... ;-) V.
Thanks, There are other "Bach on the lute" videos on YT (Eduardo Eguez, Hoppy Smith, Louis Pernot...) but with this transcription perhaps I'm the first to try... I'm now loading the Courante... Best regards, Valéry
What a spectacular performance! Thank you for contributing to the collective revival of interest in this spectacular instrument and its sublime repertoire! Of what sort is your lute and from where did you acquire it, if I may ask?
Thanks for the comment ;-) About the lute, I'm using here a 13 courses baroque lute, made by Didier Jarny (see my page for a link...) I'm also playing renaissance lute and historical guitars. Best regards, Valéry
Strings are stopped to the 8th course, then played open so "swann neck" lutes (double or triple pegboxes) have more basses out of the fretboard than lute like mine.
Hello Erik, thanks for coming here ;-) hope you're doing fine. baroque lute sounds nice but hard to play... I let it sleep a little bit now, playing theorbo... All the best ! Val
Thanks ;-) Lute is perhaps harder because of the number of strings, the basses and the longer string length, but the tuning is more adapted to this music, so ? Regards Val
Oh, I think 1006a is not at my hand, too difficult... (much more on the lute than on the guitar...) I'll try to go on with this one and some Weiss too (and other very nice anonymous German music, mostly unknown) Thanks for the comment Val
its amazing the way you play, have you thought although to share the scores??? I mean, I would really like to play that beautiful song and I think im not the only one...I've already looked for the score but it isnt for lute,,,,you could share or sell youre Lute song´s scores...specially Bach song's, they're all gorgeous...greetings maestro.
That's kind of you, but the only equipment I have is a zoom H2 for the sound. (and even with a good mixing, produce a CD is expensive, and as I said the first one was not sold enough to cover charges... so... Thanks anyway for the offer ;-) Best regards Val
Very nice, Luthval. I like this transctption a lot! Btw, how about the lute works of Bach? In fact, almost all of what Bach wrote is quite beautiful....
WOW! Dear Val!! I am so happy to see and hear this!! Just WOW! I love Bach (as you know) and this is just beautiful!! You have my respect and 5 stars!

I love seeing and hearing from folk who either vocalize or demonstrate their passionate explanation of the music God has given us. Thank you.
Beatiful Bach cello sonata interpretation in the lute. Now the dream is reality.Congratulations.More Bach please!! Thank you

I concur, Bach's cello suites are unbelievably beautiful and full for one instrument.

Thanks for the comment ;-) and for listening.Regards
Val
Je n'ai pas encore regardé vos vidéos récentes, car j'ai beaucoup de travail en ce moment, mais je trouve ce Bach parfait!
I met Gusta Goldschmidt once in '85, Very respectable lady.
Thanks for your comment and for witness her memory.
