Out of all the videos of Mandolinists I keep coming back to this performance more than any other by alot. The combination of playing such a great piece of music, the tone of your amazing mandolin, your amazing playing technique no doubt from years of practice and hard work , and the place you chose to perform this piece has such wonderful natural acoustics... all those elements combined make this my favorite mandolin performance online. Bravo I'm a big fan
Wonderful. Remarkable. That's a serious challenge. Seems like an odd picking style too. I'm amazed, all the stops and intervals fretted so cleanly, even the dynamics are impressive. I love Bach on the mandolin. The mandolin... the fretted violin... that you PICK! ~s00pa'~d00pa'~ ~JSV
Marverous performance. I was very amased to know that one of the Bach's masterpiece for violin can be played by mandilin. Thank you for your excellent video.
It really bugs me that performers like Sebastiaan here are few and far between in the US. I really LIKE hearing Bach on the mandolin. I like to play Bach on my mandolin (of course I can't play like this!!). His performance really stands out. Thank you very much for posting this!!
First I wondered how it could be possible to play such a polyphonic fuga on a mandolin on which usually are performed monophonic melodies. Bur I remenbered this is not a trancription but an arrangement because mandolin is tuned as same as violin. However this is a brilliant and surprising performance. Thanks a lot and Bravo
Congratulations! I am aguitar player but I just recently took up the mandolin and it's inspiring to watch and listen to such a masterful technique. (p.s. My dog is called 'Fuga' after this piece!)
Hi ludo8808, Thanks you for your comment. The plectrum used here is the so-called 'Roman' plectrum. It is indeed long; about 6,5 cm. From tutors written in the long history of the (Italian) mandolin we learn that the wooden- and the birds feather quill - and later those of tortoise shell - always have been quite long and narrow. Only from ca. 1880 the tortoise shell plectrum appeared in a much smaller and a triangle shape. And this only in/around Neaples. Best, Orchestradimandolini.
It's written for violin, which is tuned the same as a mandolin, so you can use the original violin sheet music. imslp.org/wiki/Violin_Sonata_No.1_in_G_minor,_BWV_1001_(Bach,_Johann_Sebastian)
That guy has the longest, skinniest fingers I've ever seen, particularly his little finger. His left hand looks like a spider weaving a web. Creeps me out. It really does and I have a hard time watching him play, but DAMN he sure can play some mandolin!
Una magnifica esecuzione di un magnifico pezzo di Bach
wow!! I never would have believed that this fugue could be played on a mandolin.

I love your playing, thanks
Just beautiful!.... as if it was written for mandoline. And a fine mixture between technique and passion.
Absolutely beautiful..A real full bodied arrangement with full sounding chords accompanying the melody..
Sebastian plays Sebastian.Wonderful!
We think you did an awesome job, Sebastiaan. Beautiful interpretation of Bach's masterpiece.

Hello @ericoschmitt, the mandolin is tuned like the violin; G-d-a-e. Greetings from Holland.

¡Una fuga para violín en una mandolina! ¡Fabulosa!
great
Hi @cihad2003, Like with the bow of the violin; listen to the sound(s) of yourself and to the voices you (and the composer) want to sound. Good luck!
wow goed gedaan :D
bravissimo
What kind of wood did they make picks out of early on?
how do you play polyphone with a plektrum?
What pick are you using? I am soon to take delivery of my first bowl back mandolin.
Awesome! Is it possible to find the notes for this mandolin version somewhere?? I would really like to learn it.

how is it tuned? G D A E as the violin? or C G D A as viola?.. or none?
Prachtig spel! *****
Hoe krijg je het voor elkaar met zo'n plectrum, wat ik in de rechterhand met duim en drie vingers speel!
Rolf Straver (gitarist)
killer
Wonderful.
But is it just me or does the ending seem a bit rushed?
I feel the tempo isn't consistent at times. Otherwise, great performance!

the room has very bad acoustics but otherwise awesome.
