      @@lewisforsythe1403 Months sounds more like it. I guess she'd really need to like a piece before trying to learn it. It's just too many notes and I think it's like those people who climb Mt. Everest. There's no real benefit except to yourself as a big accomplishment. Unless you were a genius with photographic memory and then I suppose it wouldn't be such a task. I would never be able to learn that. Would take more technique than I have and much more memory power.

      I’ve learned a few (much-simpler) Bach pieces and for me it isn’t a matter of remembering all the notes, but learning the song and remembering the melody in my head… after I’ve gone through the many many hours of learning the finger positions, when I play them now I just hear the song in my head and my fingers know where to go. It’s kind of like a maze, or walking through your home in the dark… instead of memorizing the number of steps, you memorize the layout of your floorplan

I have a deep and abiding appreciation, being a guitarist myself, for the intense focus and extended practice times necessary to play Bach at this level on this particular instrument. Without exception, she has performed at a world-class level, and her execution and tonality are spot-on, AND consistent through the pieces. • @adamedmour9704
      @adamedmour9704 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@joszebNot really an improvement, just vastly more economical and practical. They used to say it costs ad much to keep a lute in Paris as a horse. Look at it this way, the parlour guitar was to the archlute what a ukulele is to unmanageable electric guitar rig with giant amp and pedal board. The real direct improvement over the lute was the pianoforte, as much as the harpischord, combining the full polyphony of the harpischord with the expressive dynamics of the lute. For additional context the concert classical guitar developed long after the lute had fallen into disuse- filling a more similar niche to the lute than the parlour guitar.

Many in who live in Leipzig or visited, and well as his children, learned under his direction and from his example as an organist the nuances of his performance practices. The medieval lute began with four double courses. Renaissance guitars also had four courses. The two instruments aren't really related; lutes fell out of fashion and, over many years, guitars gradually expanded and gained extra strings and essentially took up the space the lute used to fill.

      This suite was originally the 3rd partita for solo violin; Bach wrote 3 sonatas and partitas for violin, and they've been arranged for other instruments many times. It's believed Bach himself made the lute transcription.

He had 2 of them in his estate after his death, as well as a regular lute. He obviously loved that sound. He rewrote the 5th cello suite for lute; the manuscript is in a museum in Tokyo. She plays a 13 courses baroque lute. There are 11 pairs of strings (it's called "courses") and 2 simple strings, the first and second. In total, there are 24 strings, but we play it like 13. Evangelina Mascardi is undoubtedly a master of the lute. Her interpretation of this suite is incredible.

      I used to think the same until I began playing classical guitar. Now, after many years, I know myself that memorizing a piece is not that difficult. Just by practicing the piece, you automatically begin memorizing it without even trying. To the layman it appears to be some great mental achievement, but for a dedicated musician, it isn't all that difficult. In fact, it's easier to memorize a piece than to play by looking at the score.

I know this piece quite well but I'm constantly listening out for what comes next with La Maestra Mascardi. I must admit I used to think of the lute just as an instrument of historical interest. She has really opened my ears and is as fascinating to watch as she is to listen to. She definitely deserves to be a lot better known than she is. Just to be persnickety :-) - that's actually 24 string (two first courses are single), and the frets are likely to be gut, not nylon; I doubt nylon would be easy to tie on at neatly as that. Frets on a lute are easily replaceable, simply being tied on as a loop of string.
