    Used to be a lot more brutal but since the 2000s lots of rules have been added to minimize injuries. In the old days, quite common to have a lot of guys bleeding during the game and they still play on. lol

    • @eiypo
      @eiypo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some of those guys have permanent neurological trauma, mate. LOL is probably not an appropriate choice of words. (Don't get me wrong, I used to love the big hits, but not if they were coming at the expense of players' long term brain function.)

    Last week the sister of a Collingwood AFL player died after a head clash with another teammate while playing the sport. As far as I know it is the only fatality directly attributed to an AFL concussion. Head clashes are not as common now days but when you have several players going for the same ball at break neck speed collisions sometimes occur!

    Just so you guys know, whenever a player is knocked to the ground after getting a significant hit to the head, they always get taken off to check for concussion. It's a rule now that a player HAS to come off the field for a check-over, and sometimes, if the doctors are really concerned, the player doesn't return for the rest of the game.

    It’s great watching the great teams and players go from the pre-season fitness levels, to the fitness levels of the Grand Final in September. These guys are big, but they get even bigger and fitter during the year, and basically run flat out during each quarter attacking the ball. A great GF is truely a wonderful thing to watch.

    2:43 - no, it's not a part of the game. There are rules (despite all appearances) to the contact. Tackles must be between the knees and shoulders - neck, head or ankles are fouls ("free kick" in Aussie football terms). Hits using the body (called a 'hip-n-shoulder') must make contact with the same parts - the elbow/shoulder to the head is dirty play, and typically provokes that reaction from teammates.

    The reason they fight after a big hit is because coaches drill into u a sense of team spirit at a young age and even in junior footy players always protect their team mates so if they get dropped like Sewell did then everyone goes after the bumper

    If an AFL player shows blood coming out, the 'blood rule' comes to effect which the field umpire blows whistle and halts time until the injured player is removed from play and to the interchange bench. It's been there since 1995 to prevent blood infection to other players such as HIV. Players with misconduct or deliberately injure another player, the umpire (field, boundary or goal) can report the player which leads to the AFL tribunal where players could be suspended from weeks from playing.

      ThEmAdJaCkHaTtEr You have to be all around fit for AFL though, it’s 2 hours of constant sprinting and jumping. The field is 170 meters and you are running up and down no matter what position. AFL players can also kick 50 meters some really good players can kick 70-80

    So this is how ruff the game can get as we lost one of the female players last week from a head injury my she RIP MARGARET Varcoe, sister of Collingwood star Travis Varcoe, has tragically died after sustaining a head injury while playing in a women’s grand final in an Adelaide Football League.
    Varcoe, playing for club Angle Vale, walked off the field after the devastating collision but later collapsed in the team’s dressing room. The 27-year-old was rushed to hospital immediately.
    She was in a coma at Royal Adelaide Hospital all week before news broke of her death on Thursday night.

  • @Josh_JKL
    @Josh_JKL 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Any of the hits that made contact with the head were illegal hits. When sports started cracking down on concussion the AFL decided a free kick (penalty pass) was no longer enough. Players now get either fined or suspended for any head contact (depending on level of contact and whether it is deemed intentional or incidental)

    • @damdimes9909

      in nfl you lead with the head because of the helmet, in afl (australian rules football) to lead with the head is automatically most likely be a concussion

    • @Dazzalinco1
      @Dazzalinco1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That makes no sense what so ever.

    • @wazamada94
      @wazamada94 7 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Because there are no helmets in the AFL players try their best to tackle safely and there are big penalties for making strong contact with the head. on many of these hits players were suspended for a few games. in NFL because of the helmet they actually use it in tackling and that is what causes most NFL concussions. also in NFL its legal to hit/tackle the head, not in AFL.

    • @dojoh98
      @dojoh98 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not to mention the fact that because these kind of hits might only happen a few times in a career, the likelihood of genuine fuckery in the head is lower because your head isn't in a collision every few minutes

    The game has been cleaned up a lot in the last 10yrs, especially head high hits and jumping in to ppl knees first. If u can, try finding a video about some of the biggest on field fights, then you’ll really see some outright violence. There’s a lot of cases arising now of serious mental damage & other brain injuries, from players who copped a lot of head high knocks. I believe there’s a lot of former grid iron players who have some of the same brain injury conditions as our footballers here?

    aussie football is more like rugby, and less like American or canadian football. it's a fluent game, no pausing in this. also the athletes require a totally different type of physical form, the only position from american football i think might compare to what aussie football needs would be runningback. there's not much to compare about these sports exept maybe that both have a weirdly shaped ball and physical contact is common.

    Something you need to take away from this. A lot of these hits are intentional, for example kneeing someone in the head, intentionally is illegal. And any serious knock will go to tribunal. If proven guilty theirs usually very tough repercussions.
