Australian Rules Football is Australia's biggest sport. Rugby doesn't get anywhere near the popularity as AFL does.

But only in those states and only by a small amount.
Aussie rules has WA, NT, SA, Tas, Vic.
And a much MUCH higher average attendance and a much MUCH higher TV tune in rate.

The part about marking is a little misleading. A mark is any catch made from a kick (anywhere over 15 metres). It's not just when they ride on the oppositions back to take a mark (that's called a 'speccy' or 'screamer')

Bouncing the ball on the run is an advanced skill. Most kids take years to get to a point where they will actually use the bounce in a game. As a substitute to the bounce, a player can lean down and touch the ball on the ground while still holding onto it, this counts as bouncing the ball and gives you another 16 yards (15 meters) to work with before you need to dispose of the ball or bounce the ball again. If you run too far without bouncing the ball, the umpire will pay a free kick against that player.
I believe the rule was invented because of the quicker players from the past who would use to tuck it under the arm and sprint off into the distance, or would keep dodging and weaving tackles for a ridiculous amount of time. This is speculation, but it sounds right to me, the concept of the bounce forces the player to execute an act which will prevent them from reaching their absolute top pace. This gives the defender a chance to catch a player with the ball despite not being quite as quick.

    • @jafrost1328
      @jafrost1328 6 ปีที่แล้ว

As a solid rugby player that tried to transition, the bounce is what sent me straight back to rugby, just couldnt get it right at full pelt and speed was my best asset

      @matthewdare3358 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

That sounds about right bro but being I was a young Aboriginal kid I grew up with a footy in my hand and had mastered the bounce very early just practice

      HAWKS 5 Flags
      Lions 3 Flags

The Hawthorn Hawks won 3 championships in a row, and have been in the grand final (super bowl) 5 times in the last 10 years.
And the Sydney Swans have won 2 championships in 10 years but have been in the championship game 5 times in 10 years also.
Geelong Cats won 3 in five years, and are looking good again to win it this season also.

Example: 20.10. 130. The 20 in the final score represents 20 times the ball has gone through the large middle posts which equals 120. (20 x 6 points)The next number is the times the ball has hit the post or goes between the large and small goal posts (10x1 point). Obviously, the the last number is the points all up.

Most successful professional club ever is port Adelaide. 36 premierships in the SANFL, 1 in the AFL, champions of Australia 4 times.
Prior to 1990 the AFL was the VFL and was the Victorian state league on par with the SANFL of south Australia.
Best team of the modern era (post 1990) Is Hawthorn with 4 premierships.
Best Victorian side in the VFL era (pre 1990) would be Carlton on 15 premierships
Best Victorian side in both VFL and AFL eras Essendon on 16 premierships. Carlton are also on 16 combined but Essendon have been runners up more than Carlton.

Other good teams at the moment are western bulldogs, Sydney swans, Adelaide crows and west coast eagles

Personally I believe the Gold Coast Suns are the best team because that is who I support. The Suns are also the second newest team starting in 2011 followed by the greater western Sydney giants who started in 2012 also the giants are the favourites to win the grand final this year.
The teams that have one the most grand finals are Essendon bombers 16 and hawthorn hawks 16. The club that have one the most grand finals in a row are the Collingwood magpies who one four in a row (1927, 1928, 1929, 1930). The Collingwood magpies are also considered the most supported club in the league but they are also the most hated club in the league especially hated by there rivals the Carlton blues who are the second most supported club and second most hated club.

Collingwood pulls the biggest crowds and has been involved in the top 5 highest attendances of all time and regularly brings a million people through the turnstiles each year, their average attendance per game is a little over 80,000

*_*Absolutely stoked that AFL has now got a following in North America - both the US and Canada. Men and women both._**
You were asking who has won the most Premierships/Flags? It changes a lot from year to year, but here's a start:
    afltables.com/afl/teams/allteams/grandfinals.html
    www.ixquick.com/do/search?q=AFL+premierships+per+team
But what's important to note is that the teams that have won the most Grand Finals may or may not be doing well in any individual season - it just changes so much from year to year. For those that are interested, coming up is the AFL Grand Final:
    www.afl.com.au/ - Saturday 30th September 2017
    Adelaide Crows - www.afc.com.au/
    vs
    Richmond Tigers - www.richmondfc.com.au/
This is the big one, where players and supporters alike have been waiting all year. Each year Grand Final crowds are somewhere around 100k, and it's like nothing you've ever seen. The noise!!! I'm an Adelaide Crows supporter, where I'm jumping out of my skin in anticipation.
But what I really want to know is what do people in the US and Canada think of AFL....once they've seen a game and had the rules explained to them, to some degree? I'm sure it must be terribly confusing to people that haven't had the rules explained, but once they've got a bit of any idea....how do people take to in North America?

In AFL, with the teams, the draft and salary caps are designed so the teams don't usually stay dominant for too long, at the moment the clear favourite for the season is the West Coast Eagles based out of Western Australia, my home team. Most teams are based in the state of Victoria where the sport has its origins.

A mark is when someone from any team kicks the ball towards you (without a touch from another player or bouncing on the ground) and you catch the ball. When you jump on top of a player to get a boost it is actually called a "specky"

Depends on the era, we have an equalisation in AFL. So going through the the eras you'll have different powerhouse teams. It was only played in Melbourne Victoria FROM 1856-1981 and was known as the VFL, in the year 1982 South Melbourne Swans relocated to Sydney and is now known as the Sydney Swans and I think it was in 1990 or 1991 they changed the branding officially to the AFL (previously Victorian Football League to Australian Football League). The power house teams like Collingwood Magpies were in the 1920's where they won 4 flags in a row from 1927-30, Essendon Bombers were probably your powerhouse team in the 50's, 60's and 70's were a big mix but I'd say Richmond Tigers, Collingwood and Carlton Blues . The 1980's were all about the Hawks, they made 7 straight Grand Finals winning 4. The 1990's between Hawthorne Hawks, Carlton Blues, West Coast Eagles, Essendon, North Melbourne Kangaroos and Collingwood Magpies and Adelaide Crows. Early 2000's were my Team the Brisbane Lions who made it to 4 straight Grand Finals and winning three straight from 2001-03 and losing one in 2004, then it was Sydney and West Coast, the Geelong Cats and Saint Kilda Saints. Now the powerhouses are Hawthorne again, Geelong, Sydney, Western Bulldogs, Adelaide and West Coast. In terms of Members though the powerhouses have always been Collingwood Magpies (the most famous Football club in Australia) along with Hawthorne Hawks who get about 80k Members, Carlton and Essendon who usually get around 60k+ members each year, nowadays you'd have to say (not always been the case) Sydney Swans who average over 50k members along with Adelaide Crows and West Coast Eagles and Richmond Tigers. They would be your "Big Ticket Teams"! But I am Biased #GoLions #BrisbaneForever #OnePride :D. One thing is for sure it is our National Religion and all fans are tribal in there own unique ways.

Bouncing a football is is a risky move as you saw at 1:30. The player bouncing the ball was so lucky his boot kicked it back to him!! A total fluke!!! That is the risk of bouncing the ball and most of the time a player will just kick/handball to a team mate to avoid the risk of losing the ball and the opposition getting it. Especially if the ground is muddy or uneven.

There are powerful AFL teams historically eg Carlton, Hawthorn, Collingwood etc. However its a bit more equalised due to rules governing salary cap, draft picks etc. Basically if you finish lower, you get better draft picks. There is a limit to how much you can spend on players, so rich teams can't just buy the best players etc. This is designed so rich teams (ie those with more supporters or affluent supporters) cannot continuously dominate like some did in the past. The idea is that its more exciting if the teams are more evenly matched.

The AFL started in 1984. It was all State leagues before that.
All club premierships before this date are State league premierships.
Eg: Port Adelaide (EST in 1870) has won 37 premierships. 36 State premierships and 1 AFL premiership.
Richmond has also won 1 AFL premiership and the others are State premierships.

When looking at the scoreboard, it is Goals Behinds Points. The points is the total of the Goals plus the Behinds; remember, each goal is worth six points and each behind is worth one point; therefore, 20(×6) + 10(×1) = 130

The ball is differently shaped to what you'd use in American football. I don't think its possible with an NFL ball because its designed to have more control in throwing and therefore much more rounded. Not entirely sure though I've only played with an American football a handful of times. Bouncing an AFL ball does take practice and you can't do it if you've never been shown but most kids learn it pretty fast when they start playing, it just becomes clockwork after a while like any technique in sport. You can see the guys playing do it like it's nothing and looking for a teammate to link to.

There is a sweet spot on the ball, on the bottom side towards the front of the ball, if your running at full pace and bounce the ball on that sweet spot what actually happens is the ball almost bounces straight up and the player then basically runs into the ball and hits his chest where the player just grabs the ball. Believe it or not cal also do that with a NFL ball, it's a lot harder but standing still it's fairly easy

ok the scores explained as you looked confused the first column is goals so that number is multiplied by 6, the second column is points so that number is multiplied by 1 and the final column is the total score so for example - 10 12 72. On your question on the best team there is not one best team each team goes through finals contention and rises to the top eventually they get older and lose players and drop off most teams have a 3-4 year window before they start to drop off, Some teams take longer to rebuild and some dominate for longer. Each team other than gws and gold coast have what they would call their sweet years, This would be years they dominated the competition and won a series of flags or championships.

Today is Grand Final Day in Australia - Collingwood vs West Coast. Hawthorn and Geelong have been pretty dominate in the last 12 years. Collingwood and Essedon are two of the other massive clubs. Attendance sits usually around 30,000, big games around 90,000. You bounce it properly by the way you drop it - at junior level you'll get a feel for how many steps you can take before you have to bounce. Tackles are awesome. Link here = th-cam.com/video/buYUPnj2zco/w-d-xo.html
Marks are catching a kicked ball -you dont have to jump. Defenders defend best by punching the ball, preventing a mark. The score in order ia number of goals, number of behinds, then the total so 130 in this example was their final score- which wins the game. Hope that helps 😊 enjoy the game mate

You don't have to estimate 16 yards because in Australia we do it in meters so it's 15 meters which is about 15 steps. And to take a mark you don't have to jump you just have to catch the ball off a kick without it touching the ground.

At the moment the team Western Bulldogs are the best as they won last year in almost leicester style. But realistically the best teams are the ones that were in the top 4 last year.

The score at 5.45 is Collingwood 20 goals (20x6 points = 120 points) 10 behinds (=10 points) - total score 120+10 = 130 points. Carlton 18 goals (18x6 points= 108 points) 12 behinds (=12 points) - total score 108+12 = 120 points. So if Carlton had kicked more accurately so three of its behinds had been goals instead, they would have had 21 goals, 9 behinds = 135 points - and would have won the game.

Which team is the best?? Of course, any AFL fan will have his/her team that they support and will say is the ¨best¨. The sport has been going for over 150 years. The AFL was once known as the VFL (based in the state of Victoria) and then the league expanded nationally in the 1980s and added on teams from around the country, however at least half the teams are still based in the state of Victoria. Many of those teams have been playing in the league as far back as the 1800s. The team that has had the highest supporter base traditionally has been Collingwood (magpies) and they have a lot of premierships (ie winning the Grand Final), however all except one was won pre-1960s when the sport was still amateur (ie. the players still had jobs during the week, although they got match payments to supplement their income). Melbourne is another team with a lot of premiersips from the olden days, but haven´t had any success in the past 60++ years, so no one would call them the greatest either.
So to measure which team is the ¨best¨ you would have to look to the 1970s onward, when it started to become fully professional and players started to make a living solely as football players (which happened fully by the late 1980s, of course now they have multi-million dollar contracts). The first AFL (then VFL) player to make a living as a footballer full-time (ie. fully professional) was Leigh Matthews of Hawthorn (Hawks) in the 1970s and is commonly regarded as the greatest player of all time, voted by his peers. However Gary Ablett (Geelong, his son, of the same name is also a star player currently playing and regarded as an all time great) is often mentioned as the most freakishly talented player of all time (he played his first year at Hawthorn before moving to Geelong for his illustrious career). Wayne Carey is also often mentioned among the all-time greats.
However, as regards the ¨greatest team¨ if we measure success by Grand Final appearances and premierships won (which is what they call it when you win the GF ie, grand final) and we look at the modern professional era (ie. starting in the 70s instead of going back to the 1850s!!!) here are some facts that might give you the answer:
Between 1971-1991, Hawthorn (ie,the Hawks) played in 12 Grand Finals and won eight. So in a twenty year period when the sport started to get fully professional, they made (your equivalent of) the Superbowl every year except for 8 times, and in at least half of those 8 times they didn´t make it they still played in finals and came close. At one stage they played in 7 in a row, winning four of them. They missed out one year at the end of their first golden era, but then won again the next, so that is 8 GFs in 9 years, and they won 5 of those 8 GFs.
In recent history, Hawthorn just won three premierships in a row, having played in four GF in a row between 2012-2015. Only one other team has won three in a row in the professional era. They also won in 2008.
No other team has a record that even comes close to this. The other teams that have a large number of premierships (some have a few more) all have to go back through the record books and count the wins in the 1800s-1950s. However the Hawks have all theirs in the modern era (except for 1961, which was their first premiership).
So there is your answer :) Although, as I say, fans of every club will argue that theirs is the ¨best¨ but if you measure success by results they can´t really argue with the facts ;)

AFL Originated in the State of Victoria where it was called VFL (Victorian Football League), this is why most of the Teams are based in Victoria, or Originally started there, again this is why the Grand Final is play at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground).
    The Victorian Football Teams are:
The Blues, from Carlton. The Magpies, from Collingwood. The Bombers, from Essendon. The Cats, from Geelong. The Hawks, from Hawthorn.
The Demons, from Melbourne. The Kangaroos, from North Melbourne. The Tigers, from Richmond. The Saints, from St Kilda. and The Bulldogs, from Footscray.
The Fromer Victorian Football Teams are:
The Lions from Fitzroy, (Now Known as the Brisbane Lions (QLD). and the Swans form South Melbourne. (Now Known as the Sydney Swans (NSW).
The Team formed in the other States are:
    The Crows, from Adelaide. (SA)
    The Dockers, from Fremantle. (WA)
The Suns, from Gold Coast. (QLD)
The Giants, from Greater Western Sydney. (NSW)
The Power, from Port Adelaide. (SA)

Not all teams have been in the AFL for the same amount of time. So trying to decide the greatest all-time team is hard. It also changes year to year. Sometimes, teams, you thought you could rely on to win, don't. This can be because they are trying to restructure, which typically means bringing in younger players and rebuilding their team. Or simply because they're having a bad year. Some teams can surprise you which is happening a lot lately. When it comes to finals, it's the best of the best, however, some teams suffer under the pressure. This typically happens to younger teams. Older, more experienced players can be a real asset in this situation. They are usually better able to read the play and handle the 'finals pressue'. Younger players are eager and have the stamina, but can buckle under the pressure. It's a super interesting sport to get into. Can definitely recommend supporting the West Coast Eagles!

Teams are generally pretty equal due to a salary cap (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFL_salary_cap) and drafts based on placement at end of season (bottom of ladder gets first pick to try help them improve etc.) this prevents one team having a major advantage over others by having millionaires simply fund it. This prevents a few teams being dominant by getting all the best players and underfunded teams (generally) having inferior players.
Always some shifting as teams who are theoretically good don't work out as the players fail to mesh, first year or so the Suns were introduced had a crazy star list to try get them started well, but still didn't perform too well.

Sydney Swans played the Grand Final last year, and at the end of Round 6 this year, they're at the very bottom of the ladder). This year it's been pretty even and unpredictable. Also, some teams have been in the competition for much longer than others. (E.g. Carlton have been around for 150++ years, whereas GWS have been around for less than 10)

Hard to say which team is the all time best as each season is different and thers no dedicated team as the big thing or really bad over long periods of time, each team has their day in a sense. But in the past 20 years Hawthorn, Geelong, West Coast and Sydney have been the most consistent. Meaning they make the finals and have won a good deal of grand finals of recent time. There are teams with more grand final wins but the game has been going for over 100 years so they tend to add up.

the 20-10-130 score is 20 goals or full 6 points, the 10 is 10 single points. when added up the final score after 2hrs play is 130 points. there are many good teams when afl history is taken into account, last years grand final winners the richmond tigers with shirt colours yellow stripe on black background havent won as many grand finals like collingwood, essendon or hawthorn and as the years have gone by the top teams generally have been fairly close. Its rare for teams to win three grand finals in a row, but history may show if a team does well they can win to in a row. Originally it was called VFL victorian football league, because the northern states here play more rugby league. when VFL truly went nation wide rugby states started joining in first was sydney the red and white shirts, As a game its based on irish football with some unique aussie thoughts thrown in. We play Irland each year in an internation rules game which combines their game with ours. its played with a round ball on a soccer or nfl shaped ground with both goals from our game and goals like soccer.

The ball isn't exactly like an American Gridiron ball. The edges or rounds are not reinforced which makes the entire ball more responsive like a basketball. The American Gridiron ball has reinforced rounds to increase flight time but reduced its bounce or responsiveness. This makes the ball a lot easier to bounce of course there is a trick to it, by flicking the ball directly towards the ground so that it bounces straight back to you, the ball does not rotate in this movement. If it does then the ball wont return to you and the bounce will not be successful.

I'm an Aussie I'm a girl, it is easy to bounce the ball if you grow up playing it which all kids do. You must not run with the ball more than 15 metres without bouncing it, kicking it, or handballing it. If players do not have a viable option to kick or handball to, they bounce it. If they run more than 15 metres without doing one of the above, it is a free kick to the other side.

You can kick it in the air or along the ground...The teams who have won the most premierships are a Essendon, Richmond, Collingwood and Carlton. A goal = 6 points and a behind one point. Therefore for eg. 5 goals = 30 points....best game in the world....

You bounce the ball no more than 16 yards, ball has to touch the ground before the 16 yards run point, you can just bend over & touch the ball to the ground bit difficult when running flat out so easier to bounce on the run. In Oz kids play Aussie rules at school so skills are learned early. best team is Collingwood Magpies black & white vertical stripes. There is also a womens league & they are tough.

    * Put this together ; Bounce the ball at stand still any way you like and it will bounce randomly away . Learn the sweet spot which is like Holding it a horizontal , curve it to the ground while your hand is on top but just behind the lace work . At 20 degrees let it go and bounce on its back about centre of the ball but not precisely . It will now propell back at you . Not straight enough it will go another direction . NOW you need to juggle this demon at full sprint , RUN across the grass ( not astro turf ) . You need to run faster at top speed as the opposing player is heading at you a million miles per hour . Bounce that Ball !! Look around , at full sprint you need to have bounced that Pill far enough in front for your speed and for it to pop up when you arrive . Keep Running Harder CMON . GO . You heading towards Goal , now kick the hell out of it as your heart and lungs are sucking air - GOALLLLL !!

Just to explain the scoring.... it's a little like early school maths equations. The video showed:
    Team A: 20.10.130
    versus
    Team B: 18.12.120
The first number is goals. A goal is worth 6 points and scored when kicked through the middle two up-rights.
So team A scored 20 goals and Team B scored 18 goals.
The second number is the points or "behinds" scored. A behind is when it passes through any of the up-rights for any reason, that don't meet the requirements of a goal. They count for only 1 point. Team A scored 10 points ("behinds"), Team B scored 12.
The third number is the total score of goals and points added. So...
    Team A: 20 goals (20 x 6) = 120 + 10 behinds (10 x 1) = 130
    Team B: 18 goals (18 x 6) = 108 + 12 behinds (12 x 1) = 120
    Hope that made sense.
Come to Australia I'll take you to a game...

So your question about who is the better team is like opening Pandora’s box. Every fan of the 18 teams will tell you their team is the best. If you want to look at past history, you have teams like Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Hawthorn etc, who have the most premierships. The most consistent team in recent times is the red and white Sydney Swans. They have missed the finals only three times in the past 25 years. The 20 .10.130 scoreline is 20 goals x six points each, equals 120 points, plus the 10 behinds, equals a total of 130 points. It is the total points that decides winning or losing a game.

Stuart Briant if you are counting VFL then you have to count other leagues which makes Port Adelaide have the most with 37

AFL has a 'Draft' and 'Salary Cap' amongst other rules that aim to equalise the sport and prevent any one team dominating for long periods of time.
Obviously there are teams that dominate, Hawthorn Hawks are the most recent team to do this with 3 premierships in a row...

due to the "draft" system, where up and coming star footballers put into a draft for team's to essentially buy these players on a market, football has "eras" where different teams can hold a grip on the competition. the draft system allows the worst performing team of that year to sign the very best up and coming draft player. the second worst team can sign the second best draft player so on. so it helps to keep the competition some what even. Although lately the geelong cats (blue and white sideways stripes) and the Hawthorne hawks (gold and brown vertical stripes) have dominated the competition for about a decade.

I'm from Australia, my profile picture is a picture of the best player in the AFL in 2016 who plays for the Geelong Cats. Recently Hawthorn was the better team winning 3 Grand finals in a row from 2013, 2014 and 2015. Most teams are successful (hawthorn, Geelong, Sydney, Western Bulldogs, Collingwood, Essendon and Brisbane) with each of these teams winning at least one Grand final in the past 17 years. If I was you I would pick Geelong Cats as a favourite team as they are still being successful for more than 10 years.
    I hope you enjoy AFL!

Sixteen yards is about 16 steps... To bounce the ball, you giude the ball toward the ground at a 45 degree angle and run onto the ball after it bounces up,,, and "The Bloods" is a nickname of the Sydney Swans

    Scores: a goal = 6 points. A behind = 1 p0int. So, a score that reads 22.16.148 means 22 X 6 = 132 + 16 =148.
