  • BugSpeaks Recommends "Gut", The Inside Story of Our Body's Most Underrated Organ, Authored by, Giulia Enders
In this book, the author translates complex information about Gut , Gut Health and Gut Micro-biome, in to "breezy entertaining prose", accompanied by quirky illustrations.
She begins by highlighting some lesser known facts about gut like, "Our stomach sits much higher in our abdomen than we think. It begins just below the left areola and ends below the bottom of the ribcage, on the right. The heart and the lungs sit on top of the stomach.
This explains why we find it more difficult to breathe deeply, after eating a lot or when people say they have stomach problems, the trouble is actually in the gut.
She also presents new perspective on food intolerance, highlighting that "globalization and air transport have exposed us to a previously unheard-of and overabundance of foods.
So, many times, what you call as food intolerance may in fact be nothing more than the reaction of your body trying to adapt to a new food, that was completely unknown during years of your evolution.
In her quirky TED talk, she highlights that overproduction of gas, even though not a pleasant experience and bloats the gut, passing a bit of that wind is not only necessary, but it is healthy too.
She then shifts her focus on microbes stating the fact that "More than 95 percent of the world’s bacteria are harmless to humans. Many are extremely beneficial.
In this context, she worries about the extreme hygiene standards in countries, stating some facts like, higher the hygiene standards of a country, the higher the nation’s incidence of allergies and auto-immune diseases. Trickling down, the more sterile a household is, the more its members will suffer from allergies and auto-immune diseases. So, she urges us to differentiate between clean and sterile.
She highlights these points to express the importance of microbes in our lives, and simply cleaning them all from your surroundings can do more harm than help.
Because, one would be amazed by "looking closer at human beings on the inside" where "it becomes clear that each of us is a world of our own. Specifically our gut, the most amazing giant forest ever, populated by the weirdest of creatures."
Every day we live and every meal we eat we influence the great microbial organ inside us, for better or for worse.
Almost nothing influences our gut bacteria as much as the food we eat and if we want to support our good bacteria, pre-biotics are the most powerful tool at our disposal.
She also spends a lot of time explaining the gut brain, "the gut’s network of nerves, which is as large and chemically complex as the gray matter in our brain."
Anyone who suffers from anxiety or depression should remember that an unhappy gut can be the cause of an unhappy mind. We should not always blame depression on the brain or on our life circumstances. There is much more to us than that.
She urges "those people" who post pictures of their dinner on Facebook, only to be disappointed by the "LACK of LIKES" from friends" to instead appeal to the right audience . The millions of users inside them.
