Hey Everyone,
In today's video, we're going to answer a question that we get all the time.. Do I REALLY need an upgraded intercooler in my turbo car? The answer? Absolutely.
By adding an intercooler to your car, you'll be able to see gains of 15-20 horsepower on a completely stock car and gains of 25+ on a modified car! How's it do it? Because of the increased surface area, the intercooler is able to decrease your temperatures by 40 degrees. As we all know, Colder Air = More Oxygen = More Power Potential :)

Yes, larger intercoolers cool the intake air better BUT they also create more drop in intercooler pressure unless new and MORE efficient tubing is used for faster "hot side" intake is used. And naturally better pipes on the "cold side" is better as well.
It's like .05 more lag big deal

Hey I can notice what feels like a significant power difference stock tuning and stock intercooler when the temperature drops in the winter. So in the summer no doubt it hugely pays off.

I would not say you gain power, it's more about not loose power under heavy loads.
You can say that about anything though, that’s like saying adding an intake an exhaust system doesn’t add horsepower, it just allows you to get the horsepower that’s already there from your motor because technically as long are you aren’t changing internals, you can say that for everything.
@@James_Edward59not really. The worse of an intercooler you have, the more drastically your available horsepower dissipates over the course of a drive cycle. A better intercooler gives your available horsepower more longevity (i.e., more similiar throttle response at each pull because they're more effective at keeping your IAT to a minimum).
An upgraded exhaust on the other hand, for instance, can relieve a significant enough amount of backpressure such that the added horsepower it offers is fairly constant throughout the drive. It's not like the diameter of the exhaust pipe changes...whereas heat soak variability (which is what intercoolers fight) is quite real.

What’s better VSF, Wagner, or Evolution Racewerks intercooler? Was leaning towards VSF. Are HP gains and reliability about the same across the 3?
I went with wagner tuning for my n54 intercooler.

How does csf intercooler keep up against wagner intercoolers? Also do they create a bigger hp increase in petrol rather than diesel cars?
Biger intercooler will not give u more HP. Will help u only to keep this HP wich U alredy have longer when u stres the engine. Exaple is a summer time on the hight way.
So if you already have an intercooler, an aem one will upgrade by 25 hp? And how much would the hp increase if you have a turbo but no intercooler at all?
I assume this works and benefits the 320i?
Just got my F30 335i and am trying to tell if it has an upgraded one or not. It appears to have a bigger one than stock and an extra cooler in front of the intercooler. Can’t tell if that’s stock or not.
I have an F82 M4 and I've been told that an intercooler wont make much difference on my car. Do you think even an M4 will see large hp gains with an upgraded intercooler?
m4's don't need an upgraded intercooler, go with intakes and you'll see a good 30 or so hp :)
M4s use water to air intake cooling not air to air like f30s

You definitely have to remove the bumper and the crash bar. But once you're underneath there then it's just swapping it out

What about the extra pressure drop that you get with a larger cooler? They fit smaller intercoolers because they have a lower pressure drop, which means more boost reaches engine...

Needing to get myself an intercooler now. Running a stage 2 tune on my A3 and can definitely feel the heat soak and loss of power. Kinda sucks

I used to think that FMIC was not entirely necessary, but after my stock turbo failed and I was forced to go PS2, I think it is very necessary for anything above Stage 1 OTS tunes.
Not running an FMIC, the intake temperature rises significantly pre-turbo, which will cause the turbo to heat up quicker, get out of efficiency, and wear bearings.

Yeah, I'm asking the SAME question about my 2019 MAZDA CX 5 2.5 L. turbo . The only really good "drop-in" intercooler and pipe kit is from CORK SPORT. Spendy but excellent quality - EXCEPT the Cork Sport intercooler is PPWDER COATED black. That's proven to actually reduce the intercooler's heat exchange efficiency. And Cork Sport won't sell me an intercooler without the black powder coat!
So do I buy it and then try to remove the coating?
Can to much water in a front mount intercooler flood the engine? Like a long cold air intake.

Your intercooler is only as good as the max velocity of charged air it can handle , at which point the air flow equals rpm speed and creates no more torque. Hence a better intercooler can handle more flow rate while still providing torque gains i.e more power.
So are you speaking of how well it's designed?

There is a rubber o ring that seals the air inside the chargepipe :) the C Clamp, just holds the charge pipe on

ofc it does, more turbo pressure, more exhaust gasses and fuel, more heat so need more cooling, it aint rocket science seriously.

I think it comes down to how you look at it. I personally agree with what someone else here said, that it moreso helps to maintain your horsepwer more consistently throughout your drive cycles. The longer and harder you push your car on any given drive cycle, the hotter everything gets - an intercooler helps keep the air as cool as possible despite the heat. The better it is at cooling the air, then the more enriched your air-fuel combustion is going to be towards the end of a drive almost just as much as it was towards the start of a drive.
Upgrading isn't going to magically grant you more power from the start necessarily, it's just going to mitigate the fall off.

There are power differences on very hot vs very cold days though. Turbo engines get heat-soaked -- this is widely known.

So my radiator cracked and since it cracked, I thought I might as well upgrade my radiator to (CSF Aluminum Radiator) and upgrade the intercooler too. Radiator upgrade video would be phenomenal.

Hi Brian, do I need to tune the car at the dyno after the Inter cooler upgrade?
I’m not Brian but I have 4 years of experience modding my E90 335i and F22 M235i. You do not need to tune the car after upgrading your intercooler (assuming you’re only upgrading the intercooler). The DME will automatically adjust. All you have to do is install the intercooler. Make 100% sure every connection is sealed. Check the intercooler to charge pipe connections (both the hot and cold side). If your cold side charge pipe is 2 pieces, double check they’re still properly connected and there’s no leak, as well as where the charge pipe connects to the throttle body. Double check your hot side charge pipe (boost pipe) to turbo connection. Lastly, I would double check there are no leaks in the intake. You don’t HAVE to do all these leak checks, but I definitely would since you’re already in there and have it taken apart. It also gives peace of mind knowing they’re not leaking. If you REALLY want to check for boost leaks you could do a smoke test.
TLDR: You do not have to tune after the install.

black has been proven to be more efficient
Black intercoolers are less effective than bare ones. It’s thermodynamics. Any paint will impede the ability shed its heat. That’s why they’re always silver from factory across all brands.
@@Weaselspleen75i agree with this but fact is, there's quite a few brands that insist on black intercoolers for some reason. I get the appeal of the aesthetic but give people the option I say.
That said, there's likely a performance difference between black paint and black anodized.

I have a 2015 335i and I originally ran the BM3 stage 1 tune and had about 360 hp, but then upgraded the FMIC, Charge pipe, and got catted Downpipes all from evolution racewerks, and then got the stage 2 tune, but I'm still getting 360 hp and I feel no power increase and I don't know what's wrong.
Did you dyno or use the gauge in the car? The gauge isn't accurate if that's what was used

Question here, I’ve just got a 2014 335i, it has the M performance package that supposedly comes with +35hp over the normal 35is. I’m looking at upgrading parts but i don’t know if the performance package comes with stuff that’s better than the upgrades I’m looking at. It came with the M performance exhaust and a high flow cat( so those mods are sealed). Would an aftermarket intercooler really be better than one i have? I can’t find all the specs that performance pack comes with so i have no clue what to upgrade and what to leave and tune.
Damn dude this is literally my exact situation, no idea if my m performance intake and exhaust is better or worse than available aftermarket parts.
Like how much better than OEM is it, and are the aftermarket parts only marginally better or substantially better?
So hard to find the answers here.

The high temperature is from the compressor or boost, so you will always get a higher density, lower temperature intake with an intercooler.
