They Might Ban Gouging Fire. But Why?

- Pokemon Competitive Singles has been turned on it's head with the release of the "Indigo Disk" DLC. Gouging Fire has been one of the most successful new Paradox Pokemon, and a popular choice in OU. With recent adaptations to it's greatest checks and its strain on teambuilding, some wish for it to be banned from the format.
A suspect vote is currently underway to determine the fate of Gouging Fire, the all new Paradox Entei Form. What do you think should be done?

Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on TH-cam. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

Going for suspect rex; undecided on what I’m going to vote. It feels pretty dumb when you lose a game because you sacked your setup gouging counter to a banded gouging, or when you predicted tera steel and got smacked with tera fairy.
But I feel like this is a symptom of a larger problem. With no tera reveal, you’re playing a guessing game the entire match no matter the Pokémon (val is another example of a stupid tera abuser that has no check until you know the set). Hoping they retest tera and @ least let it be revealed on team preview. Deducing the set and the mons you need to keep to play around it and it’s teammates would make the game a lot more competitive imo
Yeah, how many of the "broken sweepers" are broken because people predict the wrong Tera type???
I mildly disagree. What about pre-gen 5 competitive where you had absolutely 0 information about a Pokemon until they sent it out? You could be playing a perfect game but if that last mon isn't what you thought it was you could very easily just lose. Deducing sets using game knowledge/experience is just as skill expressive as being able to play around them imo.
Pokemon has always had some element of multiple choice and while VGC can compensate for the lack of it through the sheer volatility of having 4 Pokemon in play at once, in singles I think something like open team sheets would turn battles into matchup fishes
@@Thund3rDrag0n12 pre-gen 5 did not have Terastal nor the insane powerlevel of current gen. Terastal is a huge problem and it should have been banned a long, long time ago.
I was a tera defender but at this point where like 80% of the banned pokemon are banned because of tera, I'd say it's definitely not a healthy thing for OU

"Chien Pao, my favourite Weavile pokemon"
The worst offender clearly was Flutter Mane, terrorizing every format, official and non official.
Maybe because paradox Pokemon are supposed to be strong 💀?
Any Pokémon, Paradox or not, can be strong without being overwhelmingly oppressive to the rest of Pokémon ever created(even without the needless Dex and move restrictions).
Not every new strong boxer has to be prime Mike Tyson in a suit of spiked armor with a metal baseball bat. But when like 40+ "Literal Iron Mike's" are put in the regular circuit(which is now restricting some foreign and veteran boxers and the techniques that each accepted boxer specifically is allowed to pull off in the ring), each with their own new unique weapons(not even mentioning the ability to change their armor instantly with a secret hidden button that counters separate and entirely different boxing styles), *every* person in the boxing world is not having a good time.
I've always been a competitive pokemon fan and even topped the OU ladder a few times in Gen 6, but seeing how many bans and suspects in this gen makes me tired of seeing the Sisyphean task it is to make it a truly balanced competitive game

Because the playerbase probably felt that banning the generation's signature mechanic AGAIN for standard play was a bit of an overreach.
Yeah. Very least they can do is disclose Tera types in team preview.
I mean the power difference between Tera and Gigantamax were massive. Changing typing and getting STAB is very strong, don’t get me wrong, but doubling your health, getting stat boosts on moves, setting up weather on moves, and other crazy stuff was too much. It’s also boring, because you only have 19 moves to choose from when Gigantamaxed (1 per type) and that’s it. Every Fire type move is the same, every Water type move is the same, so on and so forth. It was stupid.
That was like a year and a half ago
@@boot-4704the problem isn’t power, it’s *predictability*.
While you can’t tell what Pokémon will D-max, you should have a really good idea of what moves they’ll have, how to resist them, and how to still deal massive damage back. Tit for tat you can D max in the face of D max to handle it. It still led to really boring gameplay, but it had an element of randomness not really out of line with the rest of the franchise.
Tera is a much bigger problem because of its DEFENSIVE properties. Getting a tera right and resisting an attack you were previously weak to is actually mathematically better than a turn of Dmax. But it could also max it’s offense. It could tera into any number of resists, that you have no way of knowing. Tera reliably has the ability to cause a game winning move in the early game just off of a bad prediction, to a point that usually gets pokemon banned.
I do think gf is too broken, but this tier would have been a lot better if some people didn't vote no action on tera for no reason
And now the qualified player will never have a majority action on tera because most of them are used to it, while many good players who don't like tera just stopped playing gen 9
I mean are you really upset that the people who play the generation like how the generation plays?
yes bc it's random bullshit that encourages gimmicks to win
Gouging fire will be gorging himself no longer if he's banned, how will life go on?
I really want a theory craft meta game from you Jimothy about how you would arrange the meta game if you had total design of it- could be a good long style vid
yes pls!
It really feels like Smogon is trying to build a balanced game out of something that is just... innately broken. The power creep of this gen is off the walls, and Tera is a comically overpowered game mechanic.
You can rightfully blame Game Freak, but I think that Smogon has some responsibility here. The rigid attitude towards balance was set up in previous gens, when these games have always been a bit BS. (Even the beautiful Gen 3, folks)
Gen 9 is the game that got me to finally try VGC, where so many broken mons are running around, you legit cannot fit them all on one team.
It can be annoying and downright degenerate at times, but it does create a chaotic playground that feels more honest to how unhinged and silly the franchise has gotten.
I don't hold the premise of Smogon tiering in contempt, it just feels like it missed the mark this time.
Smogon have sadly always been very hasty to ban, restrict or add clauses
I’m totally with you though - Ive found VGC a lot more enjoyable this gen; it’s just less effort to teambuild within the regulations and ends up more fun ebcause of it
I mean, Anything Goes exists.
Honestly, not surprised. Yet another pokemon that Tera pushes over the edge. I mean, sure, there's other factors at play here, but I feel like the real issue is the ability to either Tera fire to boost its damage to insane levels, or defensive teras letting it evade status/gain immunities to certain checks. Look at the ban/remain thread on smogon, CTCs best argument is that you can bring two pokemon like Gliscor and Alomomola to bait out its Tera and counter it. If your best argument is that someone has to dedicate a third of their team to countering one mon, you already know you're hitting the copium. Tera action would've let us avoid all of this, but nope, we'd rather ban 10+ mons that could otherwise remain in OU no problem.
"Guys look! This pokemon can two-shot a bulky resist with tera and then sweep!"
"That's like, the 12th pokemon you've considered banning for that reason."
"Yeah, cause that makes it damn near imposible to answer!"
"Have you considered the issue is the commonality between them and not entirely the pokemon themselves?"

As someone who doesnt play competitive, I think they should do something like a test ban, where they ban a pokemon (or two) for about a week to see if it was actually bad for the metagame or not. If its better, they unban. If its worse, it stays banned.
That way we actually get to see how much they actually shape the game for better/worse.
Of course it should still end in real competitive players voting on whether the ban should stay, but itd let people who disagree experience why it should stay unbanned or vice versa.
I think this might be Entei's best gen yet. With his ancient ancestor being good in both OU and VGC plus Entei himself has been getting good VGC usage. I'm glad to see the most unviable of the Legendary Beasts finally get good.
I gotta agree that a lot of issues with this Gen stem from Terrastalization. It surprised me as well that no action at all was done to such a centralizing mechanic. Ultimately, the public wants to keep the flagship mechanic of Gen 9, and while I do respect wanting the metagame to keep such a core mechanic, considering almost every Mon that has been suspected, banned or even put on the radar has had Tera be one of the reasons for them being overbearing, makes me question if a singles OU metagame with Tera allowed so freely will ever find balance.
I think it's healthy because it made me rethink my strats
I center around Unawares like Dondozo and Clodsire as more passive defensive walls
(Waterfall, Curse, Sleep Talk and Rest on Dozo principally)
And for the DD + Breaking Swipes set I got forced to drop Sleep Talk and start using Body Slam of Dondozo, and now I'm having tons of fun!

Not great I think.
It's a lot better in Doubles tho. Excellent Expanding Force user.
It’s actually seen some new usage recently with an AV Future Sight + Volt Switch set when paired with scary physical attackers. It’s still not amazing, but it’s very viable at least
The Gen 9 ban list is gonna be bigger than some entire gen's whole roster
I always thought Gouging Fire was the strongest of the 6 new paradox forms. I think its typing is excellent and giving both Snarl+Breaking Swipe to such an excellently bully pokemon cant be fair.

As someone who mostly doesn't play Pokemon but checks in on the scene now and then every time i see one of these videos i ask why they haven't banned terra yet when to my outside perspective it seems to be the greatest common denominator in these suspect tests
It got a suspect and 58% voted action on It but It wasnt enough, if It got to 60 we would have open Tera like vgc but that doesn't solve all of the problems, currently only 56% of the general playerbase and less than half of the qualified playerbase want action, only 28 percent want ban
People were unwilling to pull the trigger on the Cool New Generation-Defining Mechanic back when they had the chance, and now people are used to it so they won't get rid of it.
Gouging Fire might be getting banned from Gen 9 OU folks, but why?
Genuinely surprising that i actually think that it's less broken than kingambit of all mons, my main issue is that it doesn't care about will o wisp and once it sets up it is absurdly hard to deal with, which isn't the case as much for other setup sweepers
The name Gouging Fire somehow reminds me of Ceaseless Discharge in terms of naming conventions. They don't really sound like names at all, more like it's describing what's going on around them.
Most of the past paradox forms are like that
I feel like you're underselling its power level, especially in a threat saturated metagame where it requires multiple different mons to check it and even has sets that cannot be walled. It's a cool mon, but there are way too many mons that need multiple answers right now.
Not gonna lie I’ve had too many games against a Gouging Fire that I had to hope the opponent Tera’d into something I could hit while surviving a +2 or +3 attack. Something and a half is always going down to Gouging fire
Archaludon Rain took over last month so less people used Deo-S cuz barraskewda outspeeds it

Breaking Swipe makes me think an ancient Scyther - Swiping Slice - or what have you as a dragon bug with technician would be sick
Or just a new mon with that typing and ability which would be better imho but GameFreak likes making new Scythers so why not have another?
Basically I just want a cool dragon bug fellow, its been 30 years and there are literally several dragonflies that are inexplicably not dragon bug types
Wait, how’s the ATK drop from Breaking Swipe affecting Body Press? 🤔
It doesn’t, Body Press uses defense stat to calculate damage
he misspoke when reading that gouging fire uses this move + tera ghost to check it, as tera ghost counters body press, not breaking swipe
With that rhythim we will see the start of Uber RU.
Archeludon could have kept it in check lmao. If only they banned something else like damp rock.
I feel like they could have just banned electro shot, and made arch not really synergize with rain
Its a signature move for it, so it wouldn't affect any other pokemon, and its the entire reason it was good with rain to begin with, outside of rain arch is a respectable and really cool option. The stealth rock + dragon tail sets were my favorite
The thing with the Tera test is it happened ridiculously early in the gen, and the test happened before the simulator was even satisfactorily accurate as far as I was concerned. I remember doing my best to climb that test, and running into a few bugs like Glimmora's Toxic Debris triggering on non-contact moves. In essence, we really should have been given more time to see and experience Tera before making a decision, or at the least, we should be retesting that community decision every so often as Gen 9s ridiculously volatile meta keeps shifting.
I wanted no action at the time precisely because Tera as a whole has so many permutations and options that I felt questioning it so early was a mistake. Problem is. For some reason. Smogon despises the idea of a grace period of say six months to a year before reasking certain questions. This may be why King Gambit isn't getting further tests. I didn't even know it had had a test. That one slipped past my radar. And with Tera, I'm currently of the mind that Tera Blast specifically should be banned, because there are more than a few pokemon who I was surprised to see action on, and the biggest difference often came down not specifically to tera as a whole, but to the way tera can shift into a type that nullifies a weakness while Tera Blast also immediately gets turned into a super effective move for some sort of counter. Regileki and Volcorona are great examples. The ability to change their type would be nice but not what I call game breaking, and it only really does so since it expands their limited movepool through Tera. Regileki going Tera Ice would mean nothing if Tera Ice didn't give it a way to destroy the ground types that completely shut it down before, while Volcorona was always kept in check not just by it's typing but by the fact there were like... 5 maybe 6 viable offensive moves for it.
If you told a day 1 Gen 9 player that Gouging Fire would get banned before Gholdengo, they say "what the heck is Gouging Fire?" Really makes you think
I'll be voting no ban because I'm on a mission to ruin the tier until Tera is banned.
Incredibly based tbh
I don't have any horses in this race - or any other involving SV OU as I haven't played it.....
But this suspect seems to have something in common with all others: the "it's fine if it doesn't Tera" argument.

It’d make more sense to suspect reshiram and zekrom in OU for April fools than banning goobing joint lighter.
Zekrom obliterated Ubers UU during its time there, that thing isn’t touching OU
Generalist mons are always either garbage or meta dominating, I feel
I think that there is a simple solution to problematic meta staples such as Great Hat, Gholdengo, and Kingambit: We unban arena trap, and let Dugtrio go crazy once more
This gen's OU is getting more and more of a joke as time passes. Idk what is going on with everyone, every new pokemon gets suspect tested for no reason but Kingambit is still there. And while a rain-exclusive pokemon is in ubers Deoxys-S doesn't get used at all

It can be difficult to deal with it sometimes, but I don't particularly see it as overpowered?! For me, no ban, and ban Goldhengo
im basically in the same position as jim, i've stopped following gen 9 ou and only play gen 3 or gen 9 random battles, but i also like him think tera is really getting old. every single time a new pokemon gets introduced ppl say it's broken, and when asked why they say it's too hard to guess the tera, or tera allows it to beat its counters, but still want to keep tera and ban the pokemon. i get that tera is cool in theory, and in tournaments with very high level mindgames it can be interesting, but the three fundamental ways it affects the game are either greatly enhancing the brute force of a wallbreaker to delete switch ins, making your defensive mons unbreakable, or creating a guessing game when a versatile threat can have 5 different teras, and all of those things create uninteractive gameplay where you often win or lose based on a coin flip. we've had to ban so many pokemon thanks to tera that we literally had to make a new tier under ubers and we still haven't done a thing about it, even if we revealed it at preview it would still just be annoying. i wouldn't care about chien pao being ou if i could ohko it with scizor's bullet punch and not have it randomly turn into a fire type to resist then ohko my hard counter, stall wouldn't be anywhere near as annoying in such an offensive meta if the stall player couldn't use tera to patch up their weaknesses in the matchup, and if it weren't for offensive tera then stuff like gouging fire and roaring moon would be doing like 50% less damage and i could switch into them
Leave my sun team alone
Tera is fun but at this point it's so obviously a problem
Nah, this thing is so ridiculously threatening when it just plops down on the field, and neutral to ice and fairy. Having to use a ground or a rock type is annoying since it’s so physically defensive and has breaking swipe. Dragon type moves are an odd choice for some teams, and usually not a part of coverage options. Even king gambit isn’t as annoying to deal with as this since gambit you have to set up a little bit. I don't understand why banning tera on a particular mon isn't a choice of action before banning the entire Pokemon
Gouging Fire has done NOTHING wrong he just has a Cool Hat
If it's baned I am never playing ou again
They Might Ban CTC. But Why?
Garg always comes when the Meta settles down especially when rain died down curse n protect sets are good rn and also obviously helps check vs breaking swipes sets if garg is tera fairy curse. Also breaking swipes doesn’t affect the damage you take from body press.
Ngl I don’t think this is a bannable mon. With g king chilly reception support and derge it doesn’t seem too hard to wall especially with E power on derge
Like almost every ban this gen, tera really helps it, without it, its probably still would be good but it would suffer against faster dragon types like dragapulz
Gouging Fire is an awesome name, it's a reference to how its fake fire mane is actually a set of blades.
Personally, I feel like Gouging Fire is pretty susceptible to phasing, but it seems like phasing moves are a lost art these days.
I don’t think I am going to try for reqs because I don’t feel too strongly one way or the other, but I’m probably leaning towards no ban
Reject gen 9, return to adv
I literally did that. Gen 9 ou sucks
How does breaking swipe help vs Dozo? Wouldnt unaware ignore the drop?
I think Unaware only takes into account enemy stat changes.
from an outside perspective all these bans really just look like "this pokemon is strong ... and tera brought it over the edge"
Maybe Tera is the real problem
O, U didn't know about it earlier? RU crazy?! This is insane, folks.
