    Once again thank you. First on getting me through the 67.5 service and now this. I ended up making a gasket for it, but either way we are dry now!! Keep the videos comming!

      Your welcome Ron. A seal/gasket would be much better then RTV but in the end as long as it seals and no leaks.....thats the name of the game. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe.

    Best video on dealing with this problem. I've a 2001 F150 - and went ahead and removed the rear window then resealed ...big mistake.
    All I had to do was apply a new weather foam strip (1/2') around the light and spread a bead of RTV - Additionally - one of the rear lamp sockets had shorted out because of the water leak. I just had to crimp and shrink seal a new socket.
    Ford knows this problem is endemic of all f150s but refuses to fix it. Thanks.

    Great video, probably a good idea to replace the bulbs why you have it off because you don't want to have to redo it 1 month after.

      There are places that sale the foam now....some have you install 2-3 layers of it. Its an option that I need to try out soon and make a follow up video. Thanks for watching and look on amazon for that foam or head to genosgarage.com and they have it as well....they made a mistake and said its for the tailgate in the catalog but its actually for the cab.

    I have a 2006 f150 and I caught the leak early. I bought an LED light so I don't have to worry about bulb replacement. I then used clear silicone on the gasket and all around the light and smoothed it out. The big 3 needs their butt kicked having a water leak like this across the truck line with Ford, GMAC, Chevy, & Chysler

    You could just remove the old gasket and replace with new thicker gasket from autozone to solve the problem rather than putting messy silicone on it. Easier and cleaner. No mess. If you just put silicone on it and the old gasket is still getting water to it, it’s porous so the water will go right through it. Best to just replace with new thicker gasket. Marine and auto gasket..

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There are other companies online that sell the exact same foam shaped cut outs and some are in different thicknesses or you use 2. That’s another option. I have never had one leak after resealing it. Not fun to clean off if you have to replace a bulb again later on for sure.

      I first noticed water from the A pillar as well. Checked the clearance lights for leaks - found none. Finally checked the 3rd brake light and found the problem. The water traveled from the brake light to the A pillar because of the angle of my driveway.

  • @bogieman101
    @bogieman101 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm sorry man but to just put rtv over the degraded gasket without even cleaning the old gasket off is just crappy work. Clean it off, replace gasket (with a better closed foam material) and then if you want to use rtv a very light skim coat on the contact side and the top (to shield the gasket from uv degrading) would be much better. Yea it takes longer, that is why I do my own work. A leak there can ruin a head liner and interior of a nice truck, it is worth spending a few extra minutes on. I have a 2005 and have replaced gasket twice before it leaked (with weatherstripping) and the truck still looks like new-no leaks.

  • @joe7528
    @joe7528 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wished they made the seal out of rubber instead of foam or have a rubber seal around the 3rd break hole on the truck and have a seal on the light assembly so it's double sealed

    Please share with me if you can where it would be if it was not the brake light. I have sealed around the entire brake light and the window seal but it still drips down near the passenger side rear pillar. I am completely defeated and have been dealing with this for 4 weeks now. Can it be leaking some place else? I can’t imagine how it would leak through all of the sealant I put around that third brake light

  • @kylewhitmire9891

    I am have trouble with the head liner getting wet it’s the upper back right corner and some of the roof or the back seat. Hey there.
    2014 ram 1500. dealer has warrantied 3 new.3rd break lights. all leak with heavy rain or car wash. I recommended using a.sealent or as seen in other videos a thicker weather stripping. my head liner is stained ( bit of a piss off) to replace it dealer would have to remove windshield so I passed. my concern is this.... I'm worried that the water that leaks into the rear is sitting in there and not fully draining. could this cause rust. is there a way to dry out the space behind the 3rd brake light when it's removed?
    thanks for the great information

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The strange thing is that Chrysler recommends resealing it....not replacing the assembly. The staining of the headliner usually can be cleaned out I have found. As far as the water.....if it gets the carpet padding soaked....it can cause mold build up. that I have found. In some cases....I recommend removing the seats/carpets and have then cleaned and dried once the original leak has been fixed. Now all this is if thats the actual cause of the leak. There may be another cause in that area such as the window seal. I recommend resealing the third brake light and then monitor the leaks. If still leaking then it needs to be checked further to see if there is another cause other then the lamp assembly. Make sure to subscribe and share the videos.

      I fully agree.....that procedure I did was the recommended repair from Chrysler. I was talking to Dorman to see if they would look into making a reusable rubber seal. I too don't like to use the RTV. There had to be a better way and I hope an aftermarket company comes up with one.

    else you recommend using?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I don't like using it but have no choice. I believe it should have a rubber type seal instead of the foam that stays collapsed and doesn't expand with the housing during temp changes. For now....RTV is what I have to use

    I'm having the same problem with my 2012 1500. One question though will this make removal of this light in the future difficult? Say if i need to replace a bulb?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheJnagle It seems that they all eventually leak over time. I wish they would come out with a better seal so that it wouldn't happen and would be easy to remove in the future. You will need to use a plastic trim stick most likely in the future to remove the lamp assembly due to the sealant. Then it would be a matter of cleaning off the residue and applying more sealant when reinstalling. Its not the ideal repair in my books but is all that is offered at this time by Dodge. I know we had 4-5 in the shop last week just for that concern. I wish I had better news as far as a "correct repair" but my hands are tied at this time. I appreciate at you watching the video and for your queston

    Why didn't you just replace the foam with better/ thicker material less mess

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This method is what Chrysler pays for.....we have to follow their recommendations if we want to be paid for the work that we do at the dealership under warranty. Personally I would like to see a rubber seal that wont collapse like the foam does. I have tried to get some companies to make that but they arent interested.

      My 2019 ram limited has both rear corner water stains in the headliner. I though it might me my pano roof or back window or 3rd brake light. 3rd brake light seems like the most common.

  • @taylorj7x
    @taylorj7x 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can you remove the third brake light afterwards or is it stuck?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is still removable but takes a but more effort to remove. Another viewer....just below this comment mentioned using a non hardening sealant. That sounds like the best method in the end. Its not what Chrysler allows us to use under warranty but make since to use in the end. It would be my first choice knowing what I know now and the sealant in the video would be my second. In the end it can still be removed with both. One easier then the other of course. Thanks for the question and for watching. Make sure to subscribe!

  • @michiganborn8303

    Why use an RTV sealant instead of a replacement after market weather strip?
    Isn't that RTV going to make things a mess and have to clean and reapply it if you have to replace those light bulbs?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I havent seen a seal yet that works well with this set up. Some have mentioned electricians putty. Havent tried it myself. As far as using the RTV....its the preferred method per Chrysler. I rather use something a bit more pliable but havent found anything that doesnt try to run when heated up in the summer temps. The RTV seals the best but yes when you do need to eventually replace the bulb you will need to clean the old RTV off. One thing is for sure that if done right....you wount get any costly water leaks or mold so you have to weigh your options. Personally I rather make sure no leak and so far I havent found a company or seal that works well enough.

      MotorCity Mechanic
      Thanks for the reply.
      I had my 1500 taken in once and had the gasket replaced under warranty but it recently started leaking again and when I went to take the lens off, the brake light bulb was completely blown out grey/white from the water contamination but I noticed with the previous fix all the dealership did was apply another gasket on top of the original leaking gasket.
      I think that was hecka lazy they couldn't start with a clean surface to mount the new gasket.
      I put in a new universal foam gasket from AutoZone and I'm crossing my fingers that does the trick.
      I'll find out when it rains again.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah the factory seal getting replaced again just means it will happen again and double sealing it is just lazy as you mentioned. The RTV isnt the best method but certainly better then those two items. Hopefully it does well for you. Thanks again for the comment.

      I assume your speaking of the left axle recall. I don't think it's a lubrication issue unless the tech did something wrong. If the noise wasn't there before then I would pay them a visit again. Not a great fix, so a bulb goes out I've gotta take it off and scrape it off and re-RVT it when it happens. Better weatherseal is the way to go. The stock stuff is basically a sponge. Get some weatherseal and reseal it for $6. Problem solved.

      Sometimes I have to do what they say. I am hoping for a better fix soon. It's 2016 and you would think a water leak wouldn't be an issue.....especially when it's been happening for years.
