I'm an automotive locksmith. We have very expensive programmers and CNC milling machines to cut modern car keys. This has nothing to with this video but just some professional advice based on my real world experience. If you ever lose your keys or even want an additional key I would stay away from aftermarket keys. Locksmiths actually make more money with aftermarket than OEM so why do I say this? In our experience it's hit or miss if they program. If you do get them to program we have had callbacks maybe 3 months after. The fob stopped working. Nissan and Infiniti are really bad. We made a decision not to use aftermarket any more. Swapping the case as in this video is fine as you are still using the OEM board. if you want to save money an OEM refurb is better than aftermarket. I tell people that complain about the price I didn't make your car, I don't make the fobs and I didn't lose your keys. If they don't want to pay for OEM's they can call someone else. If I sell them an aftermarket FOB a little cheaper and I have to come out down the road because the FOB failed neither one of us will be happy. Just my two cents.

I have a 2016 Ram 1500. I got the key fob off Amazon, the old without the screw in the back. I used a pair of little clippers and cut the new one to match up with the original one. IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM! THANKS!!! Saved me so much money!!!! My Man!

You saved me so much money today! I only have one key fob for my van, and it quit working today! The locksmith would only replace my fob if I had a working one and I couldn't afford one from the dealer. Anyways, I opened my fob up, cleaned it out (looked like it had been dropped in motor oil...might need to have a talk with my mechanic!), and super glued the metal discs back into place.... my key fob is working good as new!! Next payday I'm getting a backup, cause I learned my lesson to only having one. Thanks so much for a great video!

  • @jeff92k7

Did similar with ours a few months ago. Only, the replacement remote we got had all the little discs taped to the circuit board with an adhesive overlay. So, we thought that was a good idea and we opened up the old remotes, found all the little discs, cleaned them and the circuit board, then carefully placed them onto the metal contacts of the circuit board and covered it all with a bit of packing tape. Then just trimmed the packing tape along the edges of the circuit board and put it all back together. The tape holds to hold the little discs in place so they won't come loose and start moving again. We used the rubber button insert and shell of the replacement remotes with our newly taped/repaired original circuit board just so they looked new again.

Yup, I had issues where I'd walk out to my truck in the morning and find it unlocked. I know I locked it. I got paranoid, double checked that it was locked every evening and the next morning unlocked. Drove me crazy. Finally realized the fob was going wonky. Popped it apart and just like you said, the little metal disc was loose and randomly locking/unlocking my truck. I cleaned it up and swapped it with my spare. Now I know how to fix it. THANKS!!!

Always love all your vids. I just finished a 3.6 Jeep. 2015. Replaced all the followers and lifters. NGK Iridium. Runs perfect. Only one follower was bad. Torquing those oil control valves worked my 73 year old biceps pretty good. I even reinstalled the passenger side intake manifold bracket. Left off the front drivers one though. Hate the plastic push pins and all the other “put there to make them take it to the dealer junk”

I repaired mine using nothing but a pencil with a rubber eraser and super glue. I took it apart as he demonstrates. Once I got to the pad and board, I saw the discs had come loose. I cleaned the circuit with the eraser and then super glued the discs back into place. It's been a year since I did the repair and have had no issues since.
The repair cost me little to no money. I am not sure what a tiny drop of glue costs. The method in the video might be advisable if I find those discs come unglued within the next year or two. Otherwise, if you have all the parts right there and they just need some glue, then just glue them back on and there you go.

Good tips here. When you mentioned your vehicle might not have remote start it reminded me of something maybe somebody else could take advantage of. For about $150 you can add remote start to certain year Ram trucks for sure, not so sure on other Dodge models. Start-X was the brand I used but I'm sure there are others. But the nice thing about it is that its plug and play and uses your existing remote. No splicing wires or anything like that. Did it on my 2010 Ram 1500 and its been working great for over a year.

Thanks for another great tip. I personally was able to swop out the new rubber and meticulously place it into the original key fob. I have the remote with the set screw in the ass end. Other option was to put the original guts into the new key fob and swap out the valet key. The only thing with that was, it was hard to pull out valet key in the new cheap Chinese made key fob. So, I went with the other route. Only time will tell if it holds up.

Thank you Mr. Pike, didn't know Amazon sold the remote outer shell with new metal disc. I also was successful in lightly
gluing the metal disc back in place with just a drop of super glue. At least the MOPAR remotes use a metal disc. My GM remote uses some type of carbon infused button that is not so easy to repair button connectivity when the carbon layer is gone. I used a bit of conductive paint (for window defrost window grid repair). A car remote gets a lot of use and it should
be a simple self repair for button connectivity, instead wasting dealer professional time to reprogram new remote keys.

Wait a minute. There are some mopar passive keyless entry systems which unlock when you just touch the door handle and the key fob is in your pocket. If you have that sytem there's not necessarily anything wrong with the fob. My wife's jeep has that particular security system.

I have an 09 challenger with just one key fob. I'd like a spare. It has Panic, door lock, door unlock, trunk unlock, & remote start. It also has push-to-start button on dash. What is the best(& cheapest) way to get another fob like the original one I have?

    Brilliant!
I opened up my Fobik and -- sure enough -- the disks were out of kilter, so I just ordered two shells to do your fix.
I'll see how it goes, but I have every reason to expect it to work perfectly.
    Thanks!

Yes perfect. Thats what I needed! Also, you keep saying “key difference” and that’s a top tier pun. So… pun intended or not haha

got a battery. I followed your directions on how to take it apart and replace the battery. But only the panic button works. Not the door buttons so I will go on Amazon. And order that feature, thank you so much.
