  • This is NOT a how-to video, rather it is a requested update on this houseplant of mine.
    Remember my china doll plant from ages ago??
    Well look at her now!!
    She's a leggy babe, and was in dire need of a drastic new 'do.

    I want to share a piece of advice my beloved plant and herb witch great-grandmother gave to me when I (literally) cried about pruning:
    When you plan to prune a plant take a good look at it and think about, which parts will / need / have to come off. When you have a clear picture talk to the plant, explain what you're going to do and ask her to retreat everything (energy, juices) what she wants and needs to keep for herself. You can touch the leaves and twigs you're going to cut where you're going to cut them, or with a big plant you can just close your eyes and clearly picture the places you are going to cut. Then leave her alone for a moment (if you can give her an hour or over night). When you come back be calm and friendly, but assertive (like a mother, who has to remove a tick or a splinter from your child's fingers; it will probably pinch or even hurt, but it has to be done), use sharp scissors or knives and cut away. See if you can use the cuttings for propagation (I could never propagate china doll in water, but in soil it worked twice. How did it gto for you?).

      This is wonderful advice! Thankyou very very much for sharing! I'm feeling a little bit braver with pruning since doing a few hack jobs in the garden over the summer, but when I feel a strong connection like with this one (and as you described) it's helpful to take a different approach.

      This reminds me of the traditional harvesting practices of speaking to and thanking the plant and the earth when harvesting. Reading this made my day. Thank you

    I've had my China doll for 15 years. Yours is "Etoliating" because it's not getting enough light. That's why it's stretching out.

    I was the same way. I HATED cutting back plants. BUT they totally love it! It helps them bush out if you like the look of a more full plant. :) Good job!!

    Aloha Jenny! I understand how you feel...pruning can be scary with certain plants. I have a China Doll and love her! She's done nothing but grow beautifully for me...really fast! I've never experienced dropping leaves...she must like where she lives on my west facing window sill. I've pruned her slightly once, repotted her twice (I got when she was really tiny) but she's now due for another trim. However, when I examine where and how to prune her, I get a bit confused as her growth habit, like most China Dolls, are confused and rambling. Thanks for showing tremendous courage. LOL I would love to see an update on her new look in the future.

    I definitely feel the same when pruning my China doll! I pruned some stems earlier so hopefully it goes well!

    Haha, very entertaining. I have a china doll that is in need of pruning and I am afraid to do it and how you reacted is exactly how I react when I'm thinking about pruning. Also, neat that I painted a pot of mine the exact colors/design as Bruce's, lol.

    On my china Doll I clip the tip leaf when the branch extends beyond 3-4 inches beyond the edge of the pot. I don't know anything and only started doing that because of space issues. It stays nice and bushy though

    I love My China doll tree too! I feel the same way about them being tough. Mine summers outside after getting a severe pruning every year, then she leafs out in her shady corner of the garden. As a result her trunk has started to develop nicely (I also clip any growth towards the bottom half). I hope Bruce Lee is feeling great! I’d love to see how she’s grown.

    Ok so i would have totally agreed with you as concerns heat, light, and movement. THEN my son took my gorgeous and huge China Doll (Gracie) as she was graceful and took her outside and left her on a table, full hot Reno summer and went away for months! I just returned and found it. First I lamented..dead! Then I took a second look. New shoots everywhere on barky limbs where previous thick limbs cut or fell away and new shoots at the bottom AND one stem remaining with full leaves all green!! Impossible. But perhaps it got lots of summer rainfall into an indoor large pot with no holes but gravel bottom. It resides now in the solarium/greenhouse and is beginning to recover!! Me thinks this is a hardier plant then anyone thinks!

    Okay, so we went into quarantine and I had to move and I have 2 china doll indoor plants, one I’ve had for 2 years the other for 3 years. The leaves dropped before the move but the stress was there. They both dropped All their leaves and branches! Their trunks are green now still, like 3 weeks later (after the move) but no new growth... eeeee!

    • @vran2192
      @vran2192 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That happened to me 3 yrs ago. It was bushy then. Now it's 8 ft. tall. No leaves on the lower inches of the trunk. I'm watching to see how to prune it.

      @@vran2192 Hi, I'm sorry that this won't show you how to prune. I'm still learning myself, and refer to other videos and websites for how-to methods. I hope it didn't waste your time. This was simply a requested update video.

    • @savannah263
      @savannah263 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Mine was pretty bare on the trunks and wouldn’t grow much either until I gave it more light, stopped watering as much, and I pinched the very tops off and it shot out more stems!! I saw somewhere that When you pinch the top off of some plants the chemical in the top to make it grow tall is removed and the plant is forced to focus its growth In other places. Hope this helps!
